I started composing songs about 8 year's ago and I may have over four hundred song and still growing. I hope you can at least point in the right direction. Thank you for your time and I will watch your videos. I do have some of my songs copywriter here in Bogota.
@Enterfly oh yeah that's super facts ya ll have an alternative tho? I have so much music everytime I go to pick a distributor i get discouraged it's like picking a pimp lol
@Enterfly there is a difference between a promoter and a distributor. sad thing is music distribution still costs and is fairly hard to do your self. slapping your song on youtube doesnt make you a distributor. you cant just put your song on spotify, the best playlists on there are basically invite only and the others cost.
Wow...this was EXTREMELY useful to watch!!! Thank you so much, for sharing this information with us! I'm just now taking steps, into becoming aware of the nitty gritty details of steps to take, with music production and releases/distribution, etc...because I plan to start having music ready to release, in the near future. Thank you for this excellent video! I was specially interested on where you talk about the 5% paid to session musicians and how that's collected and paid by SoundExchange for non interactive streaming platforms. I've been looking for that all over and can't seem to find it. Thanks!

About the copyright part: What if I am not a US citizen? Do I still write it under the US copyright office? Or is there like a different office for every country and I should write it there? Does it matter? Thanks :)
@Camilo Ortega There are countries that doesn't have any. Like you are living in the usa on legal status and you are an artist, you can't register your song to copyright office in the usa?

Actually it is called common-law copyright and does stand-up in us courts. But if you want a copy of the registration you will have to go through the US copyright office.

Hi I have a demo of a song. Its not a complete song but I uplaoded it to Soundcloud and most of them are 2 mins long so its a bit close to completion just not professionally complete in structure. I'm crying. Thank You. This information is so valuable and priceless. It's hard to get all this information in one place. Thank you again. So glad I found this video. And ive watched a million videos. 👑
In the USA music is copyrighted through the creation of the work not by third part organizations such as BMI. Such organisations collect royalties rather then copyrighting works.
O.M.G!!! Why does the music industry have to be SOOOOOO ridiculously DIFFICULT lol! Sad that we can't just make music and get paid. Thank you for this video though.
Anytime Money is Involved You Better Believe the Greedy sobs will Be Finding ways to get their Greedy Hands in It! Not like the Good Ole Days at Sun Label or Others that were just about Music! You Have Big Music Executives that Don't even Like Music Getting Rich!
So right but norm only do we love performing But now we have to become our own record company and it’s hard to promote yourself is it not? Thanks for the tip!
6:10 So does this apply to remixes as well? Note: I'm not talking about using the original recording. I have a remix of "Rose theme" from Titanic that over the stretch of six minutes uses maybe a bar and a half of the right hand melody... but it's all my own synths and sequencing. I'm wondering if I can release it as a remix of that song without getting in trouble if it gets a lot of streams.. One of the bars that I take from it is heard prominently in parts of it (it repeats quite a bit) but it amounts to a C major arpeggio without the 3rd, which is yes the way the arpeggio is played is distinct but it's a basic C major arpeggio and I heard some people say that you can't copyright basic chords or arpeggios. I think I could get away with releasing as an original track but my morals tell me that I need to say it's a remix of James Horner's work. but I don't want to get in trouble or not be able to make money off of it, especially since it's one of my favorite tracks and I'd like to make an HD remaster (it was made on a Commodore Amiga with really low-fi sampler so it's not the best audio quality)
6:12 let me get this straight. I have a song that I wrote you can hear it and go performanc it somewhere and get 45% of the royalties? U don't have to consult my permission at all? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
That's because when you register with a performance rights organization that gives them the authority to license your music through agencies like Harry Fox you don't need a performance rights be your own publishing company get your own barcode and your own isrc
@@baselsettlements3214 What are all the requirements to be a music publisher and can you obtain 100% royalties of your own music world wide doing so without performance rights organizations? Also...do you need to apply for digital distribution services...or as a music publisher will be granted access to such independently separate from them?
Thanks a million Ryan, this relieved a lot of anxiety I was having on these subjects. Watched several videos on the subject and yours just speaks my language.
You might have trouble with the application process if you don't have US documentation/bank account/ etc. I suggest affiliating with the PRO of the country you reside first before establishing an overseas PRO.
Serious Question: So once i upload my music, i have to pay an annual fee to keep it online? Is there anyway to just do a single fee to have it permanently up?
🦉 That's Distrokid that you pay $20 annually but you can release as many tracks as you like. If you decide to stop paying yearly, DistroKid gives artists the option to pay $29.99 USD per single or $49.99 USD per album to keep your songs on the streaming platforms indefinitely. If you release a lot of songs DistroKid may be a good choice. CDBaby's fees are higher but there's no annual fee. It may be the better deal for fewer releases. If you just want to have your music publicly available without selling it, consider mp3 hosting sites like SoundCloud or UA-cam, hosting them on your own website, or peer-to-peer file sharing (BitTorrent, Napster, Limewire).
I actually had an “industry” guy do this for me back around 2005. He didn’t do 3/4 of what was covered here. It showed. Music industry is a completely counterintuitive, counterproductive, counter... common sense? shitshow. Just ridiculous the hoops one has to hurl himself through.
@@labteqmusic1264 : You mean, like record companies have been doing for decades? The times are changing. With the relatively low cost of the tools to create music in your bedroom, basement, etc., record companies are no longer as needed for the creation and producing part. Having a copyright and being prepared to defend your copyright are two different things. When it comes to legal battles, preparation is key.
This was the most helpful out of everything I’ve been researching so far. And so significant ! Thank you!
THANK YOU RYAN!! for making this easier! and sharing your experience!!
Hello. Thanks for sharing. Why sign up with BMI if Songtrust collect the same royalties including international royalties? Does one collect non- interactive and the other doesn't?
I love the tone and clarity. Thank you.
Great info. I've been out of the game for 14 years and was recently researching this same info. Thanks for posting.
You're a gifted teacher. Thanks!!
"Distrokid is dead to me" 😂 I loved the smirk after that, probably because I saw your video about how it all went down. Thanks again! Be well and continued success to you. :-) Oh, and you just got a SUB from me. I don't hand those out to often. Peace!
Hi Ryan I'll just get to the point. I am a song writer living in Bogota Columbia but born in the US. All I want to do is get my song copywriting and for it to be heard. I'm 71 so I don't expect to on stage anytime soon. There is so much things out there to know and I don't what to make any mistake. I started composing songs about 8 year's ago and I may have over four hundred song and still growing. I hope you can at least point in the right direction. Thank you for your time and I will watch your videos. I do have some of my songs copywriter here in Bogota.
Oh, my god...so in addition to a distributor, i need to sign up for like 5 more services?? Geez
@Enterfly elaborate bro!
@Enterfly oh yeah that's super facts ya ll have an alternative tho? I have so much music everytime I go to pick a distributor i get discouraged it's like picking a pimp lol
@Enterfly thanks yeah that would be dope but I think spotify and tidal, I know tidal doesnt let you directly upload without one of those distributors
@Enterfly how can you be your own distributor?
@Enterfly there is a difference between a promoter and a distributor. sad thing is music distribution still costs and is fairly hard to do your self. slapping your song on youtube doesnt make you a distributor. you cant just put your song on spotify, the best playlists on there are basically invite only and the others cost.
A video on the order and steps needed to release music would be a gem. From what steps are needed before distribution
Damn...thanks, man. I wish we had someone doing this for Australia.
There is also Sentric Music in the UK, who collect for film/TV/video games mainly, but also for other types of royalty.
This was great, very impressed and educated. The PDF was just a cherry on top, much love!!
I had no idea about 90% of what you cover here, so this is loads of crucial information, that will help me be truly prepared, for when the time comes, that I release some of my own music, and even any recordings or performances, of cover songs.
This was so enlightening, as I am new to this and wanted to know more about what I didn't know THANKS : )
I've been in publishing since 1990 and just learned something I didn't know!! Nice job dude.
This was awesome thank you so much! I already started with Distrokid and now Im nervous lol. A bunch of friends recommended though!
How long have you been in distrokid
This is a fantastic video, even 3 years later. Thank you so much!
Dude thank you man may God bless you even more for this!!! ive been chekin for distribution for 2 years now and was still not sure how to proceed but the way you broke it down made it crystal clear ill be checking either octiive or awal....thanx again!! subbed!!!
It is rare to find such a concise, direct and helpful explanation,
and finally enlightening, of how commissions and copyrights work. thank you very much
Super valuable information, thanks Ryan for sharing those amazing tips, time to put it to work now! Please, keep us updated if anything changes or improves about this key subject for us musicians. Great work my friend!
For UK you need PRS/PPL instead of ASCAP/BMI, plus PRS will collect nearly, if not all royalties from multiple sources.
Thank you for this excellent video! I was specially interested on where you talk about the 5% paid to session musicians and how that's collected and paid by SoundExchange for non interactive streaming platforms.
I'm curious to know how do Interactive platforms like Spotify and Apple Music actually pay that to musicians if it's not through SoundExchange. I've been looking for that all over and can't seem to find it. Thanks!
Awesome video. I just finished a music business program in Canada, but it's great to hear these things from an American perspective.
That's awesome! Glad you were able to get both!
This is the reason they call it the music business. Grateful to have this in one spot. Onward!
What a great video! We're a collective of musicians, visual and performing artists based in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and have been searching for this information all over the internet. Thanks so much for helping us realize our dreams, you are an inspiration! ⚡️
Thank you Ryan very clearly articulated and right to the point. Although I am familiar with everything you described the way you put it together gives me a reason to forward this video to a few young artists that I don't have time to sit down with. I subscribed and will check out your past and future videos. Stay well. Steven Barry
Definitely dope how you explained it, I tell ppl all the time about all these things when I teach music publishing, I will start sending them to your videos
This is PERFECT! I love how he's sour about distrokid but he's still honest. Gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. Good qualities brotha 👍 liked/subscribed !!
God of translating biz issues to musician, I thank you:) So many youtube vids about this stuff out there that don't actually address the issue of the indy musician, such as, we have no idea of what any of the rights segments are in the first place. I was looking for somebody sharing all the pertinent info meticulously in a way that actally makes sense to the indy musician publisher and you delivered. Thanks again for the clarity and care!
What's the lowest amount of $$$ needed for ALL that?
I don’t understand how you are the only person on planet earth that knows how to explain all of this to make it make sense. I feel like I owe you some money right now.. I’ll pay you as soon as covid decides gives me my job back
All the best! Great to hear it's helpful!
About the copyright part:
What if I am not a US citizen? Do I still write it under the US copyright office? Or is there like a different office for every country and I should write it there? Does it matter?
Thanks :)
@Camilo Ortega There are countries that doesn't have any. Like you are living in the usa on legal status and you are an artist, you can't register your song to copyright office in the usa?
Bro, wow!... Thank you so much for enlightening all of us with such gems of knowledge here! I hugely appreciate what you're doing for all of us in the independent artist/music community, sharing your wisdom, knowledge, and personal experiences out of the kindness of your heart for free on UA-cam here just to help the next man to maybe succeed on his own... It's empowering stuff my guy, so just know that it's really appreciated and you're really appreciated. Thank you so much for stuff like this, and keep it coming!!
The information that you provide is Awesome! You really cover many aspects of protecting your music, Thank you ...I have watched this video at least 10 times as refresher course to build and protect and also to earn monies from my works, so thank you again. You simply Rock!
Actually it is called common-law copyright and does stand-up in us courts. But if you want a copy of the registration you will have to go through the US copyright office.
I am a long time musician and I own a recording studio and all the information that you just gave me is awesome. I did release one album with LANDR DISTRIBUTION And it didn't do well. But now I am going back to tune core. All the steps you mentioned in your video helped me out a lot thank you so much.
Hi I have a demo of a song. Its not a complete song but I uplaoded it to Soundcloud and most of them are 2 mins long so its a bit close to completion just not professionally complete in structure.
If I copyright that song. If I add lyrics or add bridges.
Do I need to file for another copyright?
Thank you
Registering level: *"Just when I thought I was out they pull me back in"*
lol
I'm crying. Thank You. This information is so valuable and priceless. It's hard to get all this information in one place. Thank you again. So glad I found this video. And ive watched a million videos. 👑
I'm super grateful to you for sharing on what would else be confusing to unobtainable answers I look forward to your future content #subscrided
So right but norm only do we love performing
But now we have to become our own record company and it’s hard to promote yourself is it not?
Ok, he has it for Distrokid!😂
Thanks Leadership 🥰.
Watching from Swaziland 🇸🇿✌️💕.
I needed this before I released my first project. Be blessed sir.
URGENT question: Is it smart to apply for BMI when you're outside the US?
up
@@heyguntur dying to know hehe
You might have trouble with the application process if you don't have US documentation/bank account/ etc.
I suggest affiliating with the PRO of the country you reside first before establishing an overseas PRO.
@@IndieMusicAcademy have u any videos talking about the steps to properly when the artist release songs? I'm still confused
This was so helpful. I have searching for months to find all of the answers and you have got it there in one small video.
Serious Question:
So once i upload my music, i have to pay an annual fee to keep it online?
Bandcamp is also a really good place to upload your music free of charge, and you can have it on the platform for as long as you want.
I paid distro kid 20 about 2 years ago and never paid again and all my music is still up and they won't take it down seems fishy to me
@@eidanlopez3554 do u own ur masters?
@@sirrichter5336 yea
Very good content: Highly actionable, usable, and pertinent. Plus, the ten minutes flew by. The video was over so fast! Thanks!
I actually had an “industry” guy do this for me back around 2005. He didn’t do 3/4 of what was covered here. It showed. Music industry is a completely counterintuitive, counterproductive, counter... common sense? shitshow. Just ridiculous the hoops one has to hurl himself through.
It's almost like people who don't make music are trying to make money off of music.
@@labteqmusic1264 : You mean, like record companies have been doing for decades? The times are changing. With the relatively low cost of the tools to create music in your bedroom, basement, etc., record companies are no longer as needed for the creation and producing part. But they used to handle everything else also, things now up to the artist to do. Most change comes with some pain.
This is literally the best explanation of everything. Damn 😮. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
