i live in zone 9b, and I had covered my passion plant with the fall leaves as you did to the Chyote plant. My passion plant grow back during the summer however, it needs the plant to be matured in order for it to flowers or fruit.
The problem with zoning is that it only refers to temperature, which is not enough. For example, we are in zone 8 in UK, which is warmer than you, but because of so much rainfall, roots of this type of plant will usually rot over winter. So it also depends on wet/dry climate.
Thank you for your input. I agree with you that too much water can rot the roots. You can try planting using sandy-loam soil, and also try planting on a well-drained, slope area for a better water control
I will share with you the link here. I have a video set to premiere about planting chayote. I will share with you the link soon as I get the video link.
You can plant chayote in a greenhouse, but has to be big enough to fit the whole plant vines and all. Even in a grreenhouse the vines wll die in winter as it's not warm enough to keep it green or thrive. You'd need a heated greenhouse if you want the vines to stay green and intact. Depending on the zone, it may be worth to just let the vine die after bearing fruits but keep the base of the plant mulched with leaves thick as high as 3 to 4 fert and as wide as 4 to 5 feet.
Hello! Yes, my children help me clear the wire trellis from dead vines. I'm glad you find this video useful. I habve chayotes growing in bags. Will transfer them in the garden when it's safe. Stay conmected!
my chayote plant is just now getting buds, can I cover it so the fruit has a chance to grow before frost. it is now Oct 13 and we live in northeast TN with hoop over top and plastic like a green house?
@@wellnessandcountrylife It didn't get to make fruit, had just started making pea size chayote. I even created a plastic greenhouse over the fence and mulched the ground around it, but the cold got it anyway. I got maybe 20 when cold weather held off til later a couple years ago, but I will not try again unless this one sprouts in spring. Had 4 failed times
Hi! Mud is not as good insulator as mulch. It's the microorganism activity in the decaying mulch that keep the mulch warm. Hay, twigs, leaves, a mixture of leaves, twigs and branches, or shredded cardboard pieces make good mulch.
Yellowing on tbe squash can be caused by overwatering or les watering. Soil needs to be moist, but not soggy. Water it at least once a week. Fertlzer with nitrogen, phosporus, and potassium once or twice during growing season. Or add lots of organic matter to your soil.
@@wellnessandcountrylife I just fertilized it. My problem is I have a big fungus gnat problem which is much better now though there are still some flying, I was keeping to top dry. Thank you. I hope to be successful. How do you know when to top the plants to make it bushier? Do you have to wait till the plant has so many sets of leaves? THANK YOU for responding so quick. Your video got me really excited about growing Cayote Squash.
@@danielleaf9146 since you are in zone 4 it will be more difficult to get your plants to bear fruits, unless you have a greenhouse to start and to extend the growing season. The I've heard the spiky kinds chayote produces quicker and requires only shorter growing period. The smoother-skinned kind takes about 5-6 months growing and bearing time. Tapping or snipping-off the ends can be done at least 5 weeks after planting. 2 months would be better when there is enough vines and tips to cut-off, it will produce more vines and makes it bushier and fuller instead of creeping wider and longer.
@@wellnessandcountrylife This is an experiment for me. I appreciate all your advices which I will follow. I don't have a greenhouse but by a very sunny window and looking healthy too. If I fail to get fruits, I will spend my energy growing something else next year. Sometimes it doesn't hurt to 'dream' and give it a try. I will surely update you. Thank you!
If this is your 5th year of it bearing then you need to save some of this years production to resprout for spring. They generally only produce 4-5 yrs then you need to plant new ones. At least that is what the elders down here tell me. Mine is only 1yr. old so I guess I will find out in 4 more years!😁
Yeah, I was able to plant some from my last harvest..they are growing indoor right now. Will replant later when the temperature is safe for them to be in ground
Hi, what zone are you in? I live in zone 7A and sometimes we get -20s with wind gust. It's not common though. If you live in zone 5 even 6 you will need a greenhouse to keep your chayote plants grow longer for it to produce chayotes. In zone 7A I barely get chayote harvest, but if I have a greenhouse I could extend the growing season
@@wellnessandcountrylife HI,Thanks for replying me.I have a green house but I never put any plants in there because we have long winter months. So everything we brought inside. Hello! What zone are you in? The ones you planted you can cover the base with thick mulch. If you protect the base the chayote will grow back in springtime. You can plant more seeds every year jist in case the ones from previous year won't come up
@@wellnessandcountrylife yeah was curious about the yield compare to old vs new plant Do you get same approx yield compare to when it was 1st and 2nd year plant ? And how about now when you said it is now 6 or 7 year old plant? Some growers keep some fruit to plant new again next year. So was wondering which method is better and would get higher yield of fruit.
I haven't trird digging the roots out. They're always in the ground over winter. When roots are protected from freezing cold the'll come back in Spring.
I only tried in zone 7. So far I'm able to harvest some. 😄 early frost in October sometimes make it hard for the fruits to survive unless i cover the top part with plastic just to keep it going for another week or so
