Wow, I'm super impressed! Your way of gardening is practical, organic and effective! And by reusing plastic bags, you impart saving our mother earth from plastic waste!
Thank you Marie. I absolutely love that squash stuffed with shrimp and other goodies. Since I’m in North Louisiana they are very expensive so now I know where to start on growing this delicious vegetable. They’re also good in a casserole. When I go to the grocery store next week, I will be buying some. Thanks again!
This was so cool! I just shared your video with the Keto Twins since they recently made chayote 'apple' mug cakes. I'm in TN too, in Thompsons Station, just south of Nashville. :) I'm totally trying this! Nice experiment.
I start my chayote early I put it in the basement once I transfer it outside month of April it dies so I learned not to plant early thank you so much now I know what I've done .
Growing up my parents always plant chayotes. My mom cooks it at least twice a month lol. Chayotes was a part of my diet for so many years. Great vlog dear. Gonna see if my husband is willing to make a trattice for me first then I will plant some as well.
I tried to to start one (My store only had one left) by putting it moist into a zipper bag, but it started to rot as fast as the root started. I put it into my worm bin, hopefully they can help save it as it did not have a sprout yet, just one single white root. My store seems to have gotten more chayote, so I am tempted to try again. It Mid October in my 8a zone, but we just had two freezes early. I will have to grow this inside as well, or see if it can survive in my plastic walled green house. I hope using a seed starting mat will provide enough temp.
Nice video. I just found your channel yesterday. I tried to grow a chayote outside but was getting nowhere once it got cold. I live in zone 4a so I took it inside by a set of windows. First I looked almost dead, now it is growing again. I have my fingers crosses, since I had them in my yard in Puerto Rico and I like them. Nothing lost by trying.
@@wellnessandcountrylife I can't afford a green house. I'm 74 and on Social Security. My house is close to one. Where I have it is by a wall of windows facing south. I also have an acerola and fig tree there in the winter. Once it gets warm outside, I take them out. I'm guessing the chayote will have to stay inside since is a vine and I'm sure will wrap around.
@@carmenortiz5294 your chayote can stayn during winter, and take them outside and during wqrmer months. You can plant it in ground, just cover the base of the plant with thick mulch to protect the roots during winter
Awesome! I have the squash from store, but no sign of a sprout. Should I remove the seed or just let the squash set out until it sends up a stem? Also, I'm in zone 8 (NW FL); so is it a good idea to plant in first of Oct? Won't freeze kill it? Thanks!!
Hi! Chayote should grow successfuly in Florida. I suggest you let it sprout first. It will take a few weeks to sprout. You can plany in containers and keep it indoor to avoid winter cold (it will die at 35 degrees F and below. If younhave a greenhouse it should survive. If ypu plant in containers transplant as early as March after the last frost.
Hi 👋. Very impressed with your gardening talent, thank you for the videos, it’s very helpful for me. I do have a question - how do you store your chayotes after harvesting through the winter?
I have not tried storing my chayotes. They usually get eaten up. They don't keep well for too long because they start to sprout. Try keeping them in the dark and less humid place. it will extend the life of the chayotes
This is temporary. I will transfer them to my garden when it's warm. I am just experimenteng how well they do in the house. These sprounted chayotes afrom my chayote plants last year. I harvest them in November 2020
Hi Marie, I am from Québec, I watched your video and has confidence to start my sprout chayotte inside and hope be able to plant it in the soil end April. I am wondering if I use a greenhouse will probably help to extend the season to Nov to get more fruits. What do you think?
Hello! What zone are you in? You can try setting up greenhouse to extend the life of the plants and to continue bearing fruits. My come-back chayote sprouts around April. But we still get frost in May so we cover the plant on days when the temps flactuate. Chayote requires at least 6 months of heat before it produces chayote fruits. Keep trying.
Hi Marie, I am in Canada Montreal , I think pretty same as you. Iost the plan last year because planted too late. So this year I have started the sprout inside
Hi! It's better to plant at least 2. You can trim the shoot tips once they grow more vines, to control the size and also it helps to grow more branching vines.
Hello! If the seed has been cut or partially rotting is best to plant the germinating chayote right away in a container with soil, so the roots can establish properly. If the germinating seed is still intact no flesh exposed, it will keep germinating until vine and leaves are formed. The chayote seed will shrink and harden eventually. It's best to plant soon as you see a few leaves and when the vine is still short. A mature chayote seed germinates even in a dim room. It geeminates faster when there is more sublight, near a window.
Hi, how do you preserve the chayote over winter so I can plant it next spring? Do you put it in a cardboard box? No light? Or does it have to be wrapped in wet paper towel?
Hi what zone are you in? For eating, you can put the chayotes in a container in a fridge. For planting chayotes I usuallt plant them in containers over winter and transplant them in the ground in Spring
When the chayote is big enough 2 to 3 months old, you can trim the tips/shoots so they don't spread too much, instead they will branch out. More branches means more shoots to grow flowers and chayote squash later.
@@wellnessandcountrylife thanks.. I am experimenting here in Norway, mid west coast. I planted it outside last June. Hoping for a stable summer and next year am going to have one in my greenhouse (just bought 1)
Yes, it takes at least 6 months full sun before it starts producing chayote, because the plant needs to grow bigger and the vines need to develop to prpduce flowers. The shorter the summer hot season, the less likely you'll have success with chayote plants.
You can buy at a grocery store, just a regular chayote vegetable. Choose the ones with tough skin, let it sit in kitchen near the window for several weeks, and you'll see a sprout.
May karugtong sis, somewhere in the Chayote playlist 😃 ay baka hindi maka bunga sa Michigan, mas shorter ang summer..maka harvest ka ng chayote young leaves.
As a starter, a small size container would work. But if plant it indoor throughout winter make sure the container is big enough for the roots to establish, then transfer in the ground ik late spring when it is safe to do so.
