We are in autumn now, today I got freshly harvested seeds and I'll LEAVE THEM IN A COOL PLACE WITHOUT DIRECT SUNLIGHT, hoping that they will have developed vines when spring comes. its ease don't berry the fruit only berry the end let the stem come out later it will grow down roots then you need to cut it back and feed and water and feed i mix in leaves like cumfrey and grass clippings in a big container with water cover and let it rot for at least 2 -3-4 weeks the stinkier the better first time a had white one growing this year some grow like 6-800 gr huge !!!!! good luck

I was just looking at my monsters today having only learned one recipe from a Guatamalan lady some 40 years ago now, it is prepared by first parboiling then peeling& slicing & dipping in egg batter that can also be rolled in panko bread crumbs & sautéd & is really delish, I didn't know much else about it but thanks to you now I am well edumacated now ! Now in Australia & inspite of being up in the GreatDividing Range & a few nights down to 6 degrees the leaves are still full & green & the fruit getting larger by the day. I didn't know to leave them as long as is possible for best results. Thank you again lovely lady for sharing your knowledge & green thumb !
My supermarket choko sprouted today. I hope it will grow out. We have 4-5 mos of warm weather, so I’m hoping it will produce enough to dehydrate and share with others. Great video, new sub!

It shoots out on your kitchen bench if you leave it there or forget to cook it on time lol, It's really cute. I believe it's one of the healthiest vegies. If it can grow a tall plant out of the fruit all on its own. It must have all the minerals etc. that the soil has. One climbed up my kitchen window all the way to the ceiling.
Watched your video an I will be trying to grow Choyotes as u love them. Have only had them sliced a steamed in stir fry veggies or chunked in soup an just steamed in chunks. Watched your video from the Cayman islands

Have been hooked ever since and found a recipe for it a few years ago and have been making it since. My partner now loves this pickle also and has it on request. Hevised to wonder why i would eat 'a weed' lol.We can't not have a vine of it in my backyard now... it's a keeper for sure ❤

I love choko, I grew up with a big vine growing in the backyard, we always had more than we could eat. I have just sprouted one and hope it will survive in cooler weather (right now it is inside by the fire and growing rapidly! I am looking forward to getting some fruit one day. Thank you for a nice introduction to growing Chokos. I have often seen them at Asian supermarkets here in Denmark and want to try to grow them. I just wonder - how cold is it getting at your place in winter? We can have cold winters here, but the biggest problem might be that they last long and we can have cold periods up to late spring. However, considering using the whole plant, I don't have to grow them for the fruits.

Chayote or choko grows well here in Germany. UK has similar climate with Germany. Try to sprout them during autumn until February. Transfer them to a big pot in March. Plant then in your veggie garden mid May. My harvest this year was around 80 pcs from 3 choko/plants. Good luck.🍀

I am wondering now if we have moth vine growing on our property. we didn't plant them a neighbor did and now they are all over the property with some of them growing up in the tree canopies. I grew up eating Chokos though and always hated them, so have not been tempted to pick them mistaking them for chokos. my mum used to prepare steamed chokos with every meal :(
Nice video, tried to grow a few last year, they all grew fine for 2- 3 months and got 1.5m and nice big leaves, then the new leaves stopped folding out and stayed small thick and rubbery and got brown and dry - plant died a few months later (happened indoor, in my green house and outdoor) could they have been infected with a disease or sprayed with a chemical inhibiter (was bought from a grocery store)
It's actually quite easy to get the seed out of the flesh. I am more interested in how to make fruit as my first year Vine grew very well but gave no fruit! Should I nip the tip for more branches or reduce the number of vines shot up from the ground?

Now I wonder if we did an over kill, I planted 2 store bought against a tree, attached to a broken branch to trellis, planned on using tree as a trellis, if grown like yours, well we will see. It is only in for about a month and climbing tree already, I live in zone 8 USA, it is June now and we are getting into the 90s now, heat doesn't seem to bother them at all.

The fast growing plant mentioned in the book is said to have been the chayote. I planted a few such plants around the perimeter of my orchard for fence use. These very quickly instead of a fence became a jungle and filled with fruits in the fall. The wrist is ribbed but not heavily wrinkled like yours. A strong differentiation is the spines present throughout the fruit. Do you know if there is a prickly variety? Thank you.

I kept having trouble getting them to sprout also and I just got one finally after putting it in a paper bag and in a lower cabinet in my kitchen ! I planted it in the garden and am hopeful!
Great video! Here in the SE United States we grow them and call them Mirlitons. Their are several "varieties" that have been propagated by families or in certain areas, which have created vines better suited to our particular environment. While the imported ones from the grocery store will grow, they do not do nearly as well as the local ones.
I used to eat mirlitons in LA as a kid-where do you find local fruits to sprout? I have tried twice from a grocery store fruit I sprouted, and it died each time after I planted it out.

Hi thank you for your info of how to grow chayote fr. fruit . I have just potted my fruit into a container a bit larger than yours. I am encountering a problem that the leaves on the new shoot ais drying up and cannot grow into a bigger size before it’s brittle into pieces when I rubbed it Is it normal or sick? I am now having it grow under two fluorescent shop light in the kitchen area. Do you think it will die. It is only January 23 in Vancouver BC . I still have to grow it indoor for at lease few more months. The young shoot is about 24 inches high now and was looking really health with a lot of small leaves and loops . I have it planted three weeks ago and all of a sudden it seem slow down and stop . But I notice a second small young shoot is appearing from the fruit Please give me some ideas of what happen You help is greatly appreciated
Chayote have great texture, but little or no flavor IMO. They add nice bulk and texture to a dish, but seriously ... NOBODY has cravings for them like they do for fruits n veg that actually have flavor. Seriously, unless you have a fairly broad and skillful repertoire of sauces (which I do) they're hard to justify a spot in one's garden. Im going to grow one this year, just as a supplement to my chinese bitter melons ... but just 1.

We call these mirlitons in Louisiana. We have our own landrace varieties because it can grow wild there (it's not native, however.)

another channel said they take 5 months to harvest and they held up over winter in zone 8a.
We love our choko vine.. pretty much perennial once it’sestablished
We call them chayote. We cut them in small pcs and saute them in garlic onion tomatoes and shrimps.
