Braden Jones Braden Jones Stephan actually let me use some of the footage you're seeing in this video! :) love their Let's Play of the game, very coherent/with entertaining commentary and I'm happy his wife is so into the game like myself. Thanks for the comment, I'm glad there are enough people interested in this obscurity and can appreciate the charm. Have you played the game yourself? If you like the humor this developer recently came out with a mobile game (iOS/Android) called Dandy Dungeon: Legend of Brave Yamada. I plan to cover this game soon but I highly recommend giving it a go before then, it's free!

I was introduced to Chulip when WayneradioTV played it a couple years back. It's so surreal and weird and I love it

Hello everyone- I'm typing this extra portion because I wanted to mention one aspect not discussed in this video: the fact that a reason the majority of these people are hiding out in holes in the first place is because they're students committing truancy & afraid to go to school from societal pressure, living as "hikikomori" (Japanese term for recluse, which is still a serious problem in the country). This fact is directly related to my mention of the "unfulfilled teacher's" story focus, and is certainly a mature theme to be integrated in the game.
Yoshiro Kimura (Chulip creator) wanted to shed light on this situation to convey peace. "You can stay wherever you want to stay, but relax, and don't worry." These unfortunate student predicaments are hinted at in-game by way of graffiti, but are also directly stated to be the case in an interview with the developer (check it out here www.hardcoregaming101.net/chulip/itw.htm if you’re curious)!
I also wanted to thank Yoshiro Kimura himself for his kind hearted responses: I’ve successfully reached out to him via Twitter on numerous occasions, and he never fails to reciprocate. I love his work in bringing this game to life, and it’s been so interesting researching this title to report for you all. Thank you all for watching, and be sure to follow my social media pages in the description if you’d like more of my content! I update just about every day and would love to hear any comments/feedback you may have. :)

Interessting. I almost dismissed this game after seeing the GameGrumps' frustration with it and hearing reviews talk about the negative aspects of it, but I can now see that is not at all the focus of the game. Definitely going to check out more of this title.

I'm so happy I could provide an alternate perspective. I won't argue with the negative critique but as you mentioned, I'm willing to dismiss them to experience the aspects unique to this game only. The developer said "This game is my soul" in response to my praise of the game via Twitter: reading that reaffirmed my newfound open mindedness and made me really appreciate every type of media for the positivity it can bring. Each game is a journey these creators want to take you on, and investing the time can really change your world. Let me know if you decide to play this/read more about it and what stuck with you- I'd be curious to find out!

Ah; the developer stating that really does say a whole lot! And cool, will do~

@@ThaneGaming The game is very frustrating to play indeed and requires a lot of patience, but when getting past that, man does it click like no other game, this type of "RPG" involving solving weird people's problem, with this type of quirk and dark writing is so fascinating, I'm hopeful that Moon, by the same creators finally being released this month, provides something similar, maybe if it is successful we can have a remaster of Chulip?

Brian Silva I put in a suggestion for Onion Games to remake Chulip, via the form on their website! I think there’s a realistic possibility-there’s a decently sized fan following and we’re pretty vocal about our love for the game! Yoshiro Kimura even said Chulip is his “soul”, so the developers still love it too ☺️ I’m stoked for Moon, and grateful it’s relieving an official English translation for the first time. I’ll be reviewing it on here for sure!

So....the father of the players one true love being imprisoned at the cementary while having been a long time Alkoholic.....do you think that this might elude to him actually having died of Alkohol poisoning due to heavy drinking and his wife actually being sad and angry at herself for not having stopped him but she deals with it by not confronting the issue but rather pret3nding as if he was still there alive and drinking keeping shouting and argueing with him and maby in extention with her daughter in order to let that frustration at herself out....finally comming to terms with it and visiting his grave at the end?

I just got done seeing a speedrun of this game and some characters freaked me out, but since it was a speedrun we obviously didn't see much interaction. Very interesting video

So this game is kind of like Marjora's Mask? In the sense where it's focused on side quests to help the residents.

I've often thought of that comparison too. I'd love to play more games like these but there don't seem to be that many.

They aren't really side quests (really you could almost call the game a collectathon ala mario 64, with kisses instead of stars), but there are certainly distinct similarities with majora's mask, what with the darker yet weirder tone that discusses some serious existential topics and the schedule system the world revolves around.

I got this game on the PS2 when I was 8. I thought it was way too confusing and couldn't progress after the girlfriend character left the town area. I gave up on it after that and traded it for a GameCube copy of Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.
