Started playing just over two years ago. Been a big fan of your UA-cam videos. I used your 30 free lessons to get started. Very informative and inspiring. Keep up the amazing work. Thank you so much.
Ah Erich! It’s so good to see you again! We’ve moved house (a huge long distance move which almost happened 18mths ago, but scuppered by Brexit then Covid)which means I’ve not checked in for nearly two weeks and I never miss my daily fix😂. I feel all adrift at sea at the moment, not least because we are in process of major adaptions for my very ill son, but watching you today feels comforting and as if I’m gaining a little normality again. Thank you for always being here with your amazing videos. I did pick up my guitar last night just to see if I could remember to finger pick and play Kids by MGMT which you taught me and yeah!!! Erich it’s still there 😊😊😊😊
i never thought i could be a good guitar player.. but i loved to play and just practiced practiced practiced. With the help of your video's i've now become a better player than i ever thought i could be.....TY TY TY
This all may sound like abstract philosophy, but I know from being in UGS that it works. Learning to Slow it Down/Break it Down was a huge boost to my progress.
Great video man. About everything that was said I'm 100 percent with. But the bit by bit is my downfall, it's easy to get overwhelmed when learning songs. It's always great to hear take your time cause I think all musicians have that same obligation feeling when learning things, like it should come naturally in five minutes. But that's not how it works. In reality it just takes time, and that's OK. Giving up is the waste of time rather than actually practicing it consistently to get it down.
Most important it seems to me is do enjoy the practicing and playing. Accept your abilities and limitations, this you will find out during the course of your guitarplaying. Mind the little things that may have the most effect on your playing. Posture and such but always start tuning the guitar. When out of tune every guitarplayer sounds awful. Andre
As a UGS Pro member, I am doing well on chords, chord changes, some strumming, pent. scales etc. , but, I am struggling on the F chord and caged chord shapes. I have the pdfs from the Effin F Chord in hand. This lecture was for me... just keep at it - i get it. The F chord is a tough one. But - I am working at it - daily. I believe it will come... Not giving up....
It is difficult to appreciate some of the things that come along in the wrong time or the wrong package. Here are a couple of things that have helped with F chord and just a little CAGED. The F Chord is simply an E Major Chord with the barr finger above it. Focus on getting that E shape everytime from everywhere. Next remember that the F Chord slides up and down the Low E string and every note it stops on makes that tonic Chord. The utility of that alone is phenominal. Next is the A Major shape with the finger laid across three stings forming an A with the bar finger above it. Same as with the F Major Barr shape, it moves up and down the 5 th sting (A) and gives you a lot of chords. Next, put the two together and you easily get a 1, 4, 5 with just two shapes up and down the neck. It's magic! If the 1 is on the sixth string then the 4 and 5 come from the 5th string A Shape chord. If the 1 is on the 5th string, then the 4 is one whole step down on the 6th (E string) and the 5 is one slide F Shape up (or to your right). It's amazing how much mileage you get for just two shapes being used as 1, 4, 5 chords. Good luck on your quest!
@@howiejm6049 Your welcome. There is so much to try and absorb that it is difficult. Here is another gem- using the box 1 scale position from the 6th string (3-6, 3-5, 3-5, etc) works for any note on any string. Start with a note on the 5th or the 4th and follow the same sequence. You run out of realestate going from low to high notes, but the sequence is the same till you run out of strings.
It’s all mindset and philosophy. Vai will tell you that. Other ingredient: work ethic, as J Loomis points out. The main mindsets: I CAN, secondly: talent is me putting in more reps than the others who stop at “good”
Instead of calling it "The Why", how about "The Goal"? Seems like that's the idea you're trying to get across -- a clear goal for what you want to do with the guitar will help to focus one's efforts to achieve it. Or is there more to it than that? Thanks for the helpful videos!
Identify your purpose for learning guitar. Is it playing for yourself.Playing for others,Playing for crowds. To accomplishing a goal.John Denver sang a song that explained his reason. it filled many lonely nights for him and friends. Not all of us are meant to be rock stars, have fun first,it will take you where you want to go.
As to why people get offended when told they have unlimited potential-- well brother, that's a comprehensible phenomenon and it comes down to one word: responsibility. It's the same reason people cling to their victimhood. I suspect you already know this, though... Anyway, please just let me say that at this point in time it comes like a cool breeze in Death Valley to hear anyone state the unequivocal truth that reality doesn't give a damn what people think it should be. And kudos for calling it exactly like it is by identifying people who can't deal with that truth as weak. Sir, I appreciate your unpopular views and your confidence to speak them. Peace.
All true but the first commercials started in under 2 minutes (smh) which takes away from the message. I couldn’t even skip the last ones because I was commenting. Still it got my like ;)
As a man thinks in his heart, so he is. What you believe in your mind is brought to reality because you ACT on what you believe. The problem is when you leap to the extreme and force what concept as the "normative" the cold hard truth is that FEW people have the DRIVE, the DESIRE, and ESPECIALLY the WORK ETHIC that it takes to get to the peak as a player. Every single exceptional player that I know personally and have played with ALL have 1 thing in common, they play every single day and are playing in excess of 5-7 hours DAILY. I also know many people who play but do not practice every single day.those that do usually play 1- 1.5 hours and it is rarely daily. Let's assume that Joe does the latter. Let's assume that he does that for 52 weeks a year. That's 182 hours. Steve averages 6 hours a day 7 days a week 50 weeks a year. Steve has 2100 hours in over Joe that's more than 10 years. In 10 years Steve has 100 YEARS of practice at Joe's pace. Even if Joe is more talented that Steve, Steve will be a VASTLY superior player. By the time Steve has 15 years in as a player at that pace, Steve will have nearly 32,000 hours. In 15 years Joe will be considered by his family and friends as a "good" guitar player Joe will have almost 2,800 hours of practice on his guitar. Short of being a prodigy you have to put in the work on the instrument to get exceptional. So if you BELIEVE, and HAVE THE DESIRE/DRIVE then you do the WORK that produces the results
Thanks my friend. Since this is not a playing video like my other few thousand videos, correct, there’s no need to play. However I have thousands of other videos where I play a lot.👍
Thank you Erich for putting this you tube lesson
out there again. It is a good refresher which I needed.

Good lesson on self drive to learn and going beyond our fears of not being good enough to play guitar.
The world is full of great guitar players...it’s the gift of liking what you play, and getting people to connect with you.

I agree 100%. You’re the best!!! 🙏

I had this hang up because I went from easier blues rock to fusion & jamband stuff. "Why is this so hard?!?" 😅 Good observation.
Very very thanks sr ur helping us and explaining in this video very celearly
Thanks, I'm so inspired with your explanations

great motivational speech. So true and transposable to other areas of life!
I know I need to practice more to achieve goals, as you suggest in the video.
Thanks for the inspiration!
I haven't time to listen to this, gotta practice.
Agree 100 % 🙏🏻
Love the reality! We should have this reality in all parts of our lives.
Thirty. Bravo Erich, great work, as usual.
Start with why, great book!

I need an acoustic guitar, they're kinda expensive over here.
So exactly how long do I have to practice?😂🤣
How good do you want to be? Practice that much.
