A big part of the sound is also playing inverted power chords, the low 5th gives that huuuuge sound
I was gonna say, don’t know why he’s not playing it right
@@analogsignal original recording of MNIJ didn't have inverted chords. if you listen to the isolated guitar track it's actually just the root and fifth, no octave. Buddy holly has some inverted chords. So does the world has turned, in the garage, etc. No one else also doesn't have any and is also the only standard tuning song.
Here looking for this comment
That is the KEY to the sound.
Read somewhere that Rivers also had the tone knob turned down. The lack of treble allowed them to run the guitars higher in the mix without getting in the way of cymbals/vocals. Corgan said similar about layering big muffs on Siamese Dream - less top = can run the guitars louder in the mix. Less attack but more 'weight'.
I’ll use that tip! Got a 50 caliber on the way. Thanks for repeating the information!
Hey Fluff, You should recreate the guitar tone from Green Day’s Album dookie.
Agreed
He will get it wrong absolutely he’s gonna. Everyone gets dookie tone wrong
@@ZagTheWag but there's no harm in him trying
Simon M. Davis eating poop is my only priority
ZagTheWag I wonder what it is about Dookie’s tones that prevent people from getting the tones from every instrument right. I’ve never heard anyone get the bass or snare drum tone right either
HUM You’d prefer an astronaut
Their recording of that fucken album is nuts, they ran their amps through bass cabs and shit.
YES
4:13 The acoustic parts of the intro were all flatpicked, not fingerpicked. It's insane to watch them do it!
Hate to tell you 3 years later, but they were fingerpicked in studio. Brian said that live he uses a boss acoustic simulator pedal, and thinks it sounds better picked through that pedal.
Its close but i feel like it still has your modern metal mix feel to it that you have with your other stuff
yeah kinda sterile
Fantastic Video!! Really enjoyed this Fluff!!
The "Blue Album" is the most significant mid 90's record in my opinion.
the only thing missing is that upside down power chord rivers always uses.
the added lower 5th in the 6th string?
@@nclsrfn yea i dont really know music theory so i always just call it an upside down power chord lol
@@PintsofGuinness It's just an inversion
@@PintsofGuinness yeah don't worry man, that's like the most technical I can get with theory :)
anyway it's explained here (6:38):
ua-cam.com/video/a3WUHhsd3EA/v-deo.html
The guitar tone is a lot tighter than the Blue Album tone, because of the difference between the Boogie Mark I and Mark II. The MI has a bassman style tone stack after the gain stages. The MII switched to a blackface tone stack in between the gain stages to tighten up the distortion. That’s why Rivers switched to Marshalls after the Boogie broke, they had a similar topology and he liked the sound better.
Matt Sharp’s Orange Matamp blew a transformer and it took them forever to find one strong enough to replace it, so the bass on the Blue Album was played through an Ampeg B-15 that the studio had.
Not sure that's the reasoning but that is the biggest difference for me too
also the blue album was majority played through rivers red strat. I'm guessing the neck pickup, he did use the lp special but I'm guessing he only used it to rerecord croppers parts because alot of the sound is a dimarzio super 2 through the mesa head at about talking volume
@@luisr.c7099 Yeah, the base distorted tone is the neck pickup of his red Strat (it was a Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell actually) into his Mark I or his Marshall SL-X, doubled with the Les Paul Special into a Marshall-either the SL-X or one that Ric Ocasek brought in. The amps were recorded pretty quiet except for the feedback volume swells, those were dimed. I’ve never seen the red Strat not on the neck pickup. You can hear it basically on its own on the “I Swear It’s True” demo on the Blue Album Deluxe version. It had a coil split that created an almost no output jangly sound that you hear on the clean part of “Only In Dreams.”
I would’ve liked to hear more of the tone from “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here” or “Jamie” that really thick sound. Those tracks specifically hit HARD. The sound is so thick, so immersive, so in your face. It’s my favorite sound I’ve heard from guitars ever on a record. Great video nonetheless, really got the spirit of the tone!
In the Garage has super heavy tone, was hoping that was the song he chose
Love Jamie!
I've been told (and my half deaf ears confirm) it's partially the way the chords are played. Standard D barred chords are played with the A from the six string making it a D5/A with the bass still playing the D. So you get overdrive and modulations from the lowest note note not the root. It sounds fantastic on Jaimie for sure. There is another way to play the chords, so for D you could play the 5th (A) on the 5th fret on 6th string, the root (D) on the 5th fret on the 5th string
and the 3rd (F#) on the 4th fret on the 4th string. It sounds really dirty. I think that's known as an inversion but I'm not great on the theory .
Matthew Melton yes, I definitely do that and it pretty much makes all the difference! Turns it from power chords into Weezer chords.
Im late but i think he was using a big muff on the most distorted tracks
Mate, do the guitar tone from Green Day's Dookie.
Paul A ZZZZZzzzzzzZZZZZZZzzzz
*bridge p90 -> overdriven plexi -> 90's tube screamer
B Mark wake up, septembers ended
Dookie drive pedal by mxr!
idleave that didnt exist in 94, try it with real amps instead
Really pumped I came across this channel. I searched for “rivers cuomo underrated guitar player” and came across this gem. Subbed!!!
I’ve been waiting for this
I really appreciate these videos and how your using the studio gear. It's been a huge help for me to get ideas on how to use my own gear.
I love your re creating guitar tone series. Really into the 2000’s pop punk / Emo bands
Rivers Cuomo is the unsung hero of modern guitar rock. He was initially in a glam metal band and then by the 90’s brought that huge rhythm sound to the Blue album with that old MK1 Boogie and his Black Ice preamp in his Warmoth Strat. His lead playing is super melodic too.
Great work Fluff - Sharp era Weezer rules.
Fluff, i love that your Blue album story is the same as mine. I practically wore that tape out listening to it while delivering papers in 1994. Still one of my all time favorites and favorite guitar tones.
Marshall cab is officially a 2032 cab. I think only produced for 5 or 6 years. Likely if Rivers got it original, that Greenbacks were pre Rola era!
Nice.
Now we'll need to hear a Green Day and FOB guitar tone. To get the Hella Mega trifecta!
Take this to your Grave!!! TONEEEEE
Brandon Cross pleaaaase
Brandon Cross i love that tone but i think cork tree’s tone is much more crunchier and polished. But still love both haha
Thanks for these recreation videos. These tones ain’t gonna kill themselves!
Idk why but it makes me really happy when guys from my favorite UA-cam guitar channels get together, nice to see uncle Ben in this.
Thanks for the cool vid Fluff!
Badass .... love this channel
Nailed it! Well done fellas
Any guitar tone from "the Egg" by shiner... Allen, Josh and Paul sounded so huge on that record.
It would be amazing to have a video recreating blink 182's Jerry Finn Enema of the state and take off your pants and jacket tone please 😁😊
Yes
That shirt is pretty great
Great attempt Fluff! Although for me the P90 is the most essential part of the tone. I’ll always remember how my Weezer guitar tone quest clicked, the moment I played a P90 guitar for the first time. Have been using single coil guitars for heavy music ever since.
I just listened to it back and forth with the original song, and I think you did a great job! I would suggest posting a link to the original song, or even include it in the video(yes monetization probably) would make this series complete!
I would love to see one of these for Faith No More's Angel Dust. Great shit Fluff
you nailed this one!
This is gonna be awesome
Omg... i love that shirt
Pretty damn good fluffy
Dude your shirt is kickass 🤘🏼
Hey Fluff, great video! Always love seeing you dig in and dissect sounds you love, and you're a great player, too. As lusciously and respectfully as I can possibly be, I don't know that this came all that close to the Blue album sound for me.
You're totally correct that P90s have a lot to do with those low-mid sounds, but to my ear the power chords with a low 5th are also important, effectively gluing together Matt's bass and Rivers' rhythm guitars. And you got a good bass tone, but Matt's bass at the time had a pair of Jerry Jones pickups wired in series which is, again, part of the mystery behind the sound.
I have a video a few months back on my channel as well as a Helix patch for you to check out if you're interested! Let's chat!
This album was fantastic! Love this "Recreating" episode!
I love this series. Have you ever put any thought into doing a classic metalcore albums like Killswitch’s End of Heartache or Trivium’s Ascendency
Yep! End Of Haertache is comjng
For the eeend of Myyuuuh
Brooooken Heeeeaaaarrrtuhttttr
Just stopping by to say, kick ass shirt bro. 🤘🏻
I like that you're using the Alternatives track feature in Logic. I never got around to learning how to actually use it. I probably should. It seems very useful.
I would love to see a stream/video where you show us how you got there, like when you sit down to mix one of these how you do it and narrate through your process.
Very cool!
"My name is jonas, here we go"
Proceeds to call of duty ad
Please do another one of these
I’ve been so obsessed with this tone lately
Another key element of the tone is how the guitars and bass are basically playing a huge power chord together. Rivers for instance always plays the 6th snare as the lowest (not always the fundamental) note in his chord.
Great job. You nailed it. Put the blue album on immediately after.
It's so weird that you released this today. Earlier today, I was thinking about how it was my ideal guitar tone and how I should look it up and see how it was done.
You pretty much nailed the tone straight away, props for that. I never knew it was a Mesa head that was used. Nice shirt too lol
Dude, I totally dig the shirt
You have it - made me search for my old CD and turn it on very loud!
Cool episode. Sweet shirt😂
Id love to see your best attempt at dime's tone!! I've never really heard anybody get very close.
I thought that a while back, he said he was working on a recreation for Far Beyond Driven...here's to hoping.
Ola did it many times.
Very true
@ola
awesome!!
A great amp to look for is the Mitchell Pro 100. Rivers Mesa was a weird offshoot that wasn’t really a Boogie, but the Mitchell is very close. I have one and love it!
Nice video, great shirt.
first video i've seen of yours and i loved it! can you please do a pavement video soon? malkmus rocks
We NEED a dookie recreation
This video should be called, "Approximating Weezer's Blue Album Guitar Tone".
D Jefferson It doesnt sound like it at all to be honest. Tone aside, the guitars and drums are both just not even playing the right parts
Dude you should do some blink tones. Any era what ever you feel would be most fun.
3:20 was when I noticed his shirt. It’s True ya know.
So happy I found this video !! Been wondering since 1994 how they got this tone !
DO Hum guitar tone.
thank you
Now would be a good time considering their recent album. They used a Boss DF2 and I have one but it sounds nothing like HUM so I'd love to see it
@@tyr4489 I had that pedal. It sounds almost exactly with a slightly different midrange and has the useless "feedback" feature.
I tell people just buy a DS1 and save your money. i guess if you buy into it buy an older DS1 that sounds better than the new ones.
@@travis43 Try the Ibanez PL5, even cheaper. I'd read they (or at least one of the guitarists) used these pedals. I was sceptical at first, but it really delivers that sound when used with high wattage tube amps
@@justinkase8642 That is one of those sound tank pedals from the 90's.
That is what Tim used when I saw them in 96.
@@travis43 Forgot if it was Tim or Matt, Matt used/s the DF-2, which I also have. You could just get a DS-1, but I really like the feedback option as well.
I love your shirt man!! Where did you get it!
I am excited.
Love your shirt m8
i need that shirt you’re wearing lmaoo
That's the greatest shirt to ever exist.
But where can I get the Epstein shirt. Lol
I feel like you have to go full on and get the original Mark I with a Gibson double-cut with P-90s. I stumbled upon and original Mark I and thankfully the music store had a newer Gibson DC junior. It definitely had the crunch, but it was tough dialing it in because there are push/pull gain knobs and it was hard to find the perfect combination. The guitar tone to me is one of the finest ever put to recording. I think playing it on a humbucker was a mistake if you're going for the album tone. My guess is Rivers got more crunch by using the neck pickup and then doubling every riff with the bridge pickup. I still can't figure out which pickup he used for the solos, except for the In The Garage, that one is DEF. the neck pickup. Then you have Rick's studio magic to account for - I think that's half the mystery too.
I'd love to see you tackle Pinkerton!
Love the shirt
Nice. I tried doing this back in April when my axefx arrived! Apparently, I was a lot closer equipment-wise than I thought!
That shirt didn't kill itself. Love it
These are a lot of fun.
A few years ago the guys at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar in Seattle did an insane deep dive on replicating Weezer's Warmoth guitars--Rivers's blue Strat and Matt Sharp's P-bass. They also formed a cover band called My Name Is Jonas Brothers and played a few gigs around the city. Check out "Weezerquest" on their blog. It's got a lot of in-depth info.
This is awesome! I'd love to see a video on recreating Blink-182's Enema Of The State guitar tone
You should show a bit of how you dial in the amp on these, would help a lot of ppl out with how to approach amps 👍
I’d love to see you try an Alkaline Trio record 🤘🏻
I would love to see your take on something like Royal Blood!
That shirt kicks ass man 😂
That’s a trashteeshirts.com shirt
That shirt is EPIC!!!
I did this last week using GarageBand, amp sims, went with a split signal dry left and EQ-compressed tube driven right into a Mesa mark 4 clone and blended that with the same EQ trick left right thing into a Marshall JCM 800 clone with the Marshall 4x12 IR. Got pretty damn close to that crunchy chewy blue album roar of In The Garage and No One Else....I should have captured a video somehow but yours is sure to be way better. Favorite guitar channel hands down is you fluff...
All things considered, I think you really nailed this as best as you could. Special thanks to Uncle Ben for lending a hand.
Great t-shirt!!!!
The latest Castlevania: Symphony of the Night cover by Lame Genie has a really sick tone. Do that one!
Bought the CD new the week of release. Still listen to the album today. Just this week as a matter of fact.
I guess I need a five foot tall 4x12 cabinet. Thanks Fluff, I never knew that was a thing, even though I have a thirty by thirty inch 2x12.
Why didn't Ben play the intro on an acoustic guitar like it's supposed to be played? The Weezer crunch tone didn't have any treble.
OMG - I just now noticed the shirt! I love it!! I wore an Operation Enduring Clusterf*ck Covid 19 shirt in one of my vids that slipped past many. What was this video about again? Old age is a helluva drug! 🤓🎸🤘🏻
Love that shirt
Crowbar-Sonic excess in its purest form. My favorite band and probably my favorite guitar tone ever.
Glad to see our fav guitar uncle
Guitar is missing some overdubs, believe the original rhythm tone was 4 tracks, neck pup left, neck pup right, bridge left, bridge right. And there's the element of the 'stacked' 5th chords that would make it that bit closer too.
Liked in the first 3 seconds just because of that shirt bro
"Ain't no fun if the homies can't have none."
..this statements original use..
I'd love to hear you do any Soundgarden song.
And/or also something from early Fall Out Boy
Well I geuss I'm gonna play a little guitar today, thanks for the inspiration fuff!
With you, in the end or Somewhere in belong of linkin park. They have some of the best sounding distortion sound and the clean harmonics too !!
