Founding guitarist Jason Cropper wrote the intro part to my name is Jonas. Unfortunately Brian Bell didn't play on the blue album. All guitars where tracked by Rivers after Jason left the band. Brian did however lay down backing vocals on the record.
I learned this album by ear from a teenager and over the years got it down more and more perfectly playing along with it, and it's gratifying to see I was correct on most it. But the jonas triad climb always stumped me. This record is so magical and I really owe a lot to it as it made me a lot smarter and sparked ways to keep inspiring myself and sort of programmed me to always think what more can I do with a set of chords..
Blue Album, Pinkerton, Everything Will Be Alright in the End, and the White Album, all you need. Plus the good hits from the other albums like Pork and Beans, Island in the Sun, Perfect Situation, etc...
Right on man, fantastic album. I could listen to Blue start to finish and never get tired of it. Love Pinkerton too but there’s that special Weezer magic on Blue, and part of it is Ric Ocaesak’s stellar production and Rivers’s songwriting. Just the fact that he went back and did all the guitars by himself after Jason left just blows me away. Perfectly made record, certainly their most iconic.
I love pinkerton so much, but every time i play it on my turntable I feel like i broke something because of the rough production (Which isn't a complaint at all)
icky thump 800000 it’s not a complaint for me either, I kinda like it. Daniel Johnston had plenty a great record and they all sound like dogshit production wise.
Notable songs with cool guitar licks and why, I’ll start. - Death and Destruction/ Maladroit- Weezer playing bluesy, - No Other One/ Pinkerton- heavy with awesome arpeggios - Susanne- Blue Album Deluxe Edition- heavy as balls.
On that unison bend in Say It Ain't So, he's actually playing the open E string on top of the 3rd string bend and the 5th fret of the B. Makes it sound much more full
Yeah, especially on their earlier stuff like _Gish_ and _Siamese Dream._ Like, when I first heard I Am One I was just blown away by the shredding on that song
The blue album is the best thing for intermediate younger guitar players. Absolute perfect level of challenging but not unreachable. I very much suggest buying the tab book
Andrew Pappas I feel like Billie Joe Armstrong’s tone goes under a lot of people’s radar, yeah his playing is pretty much only powerchords but his tone is fucking amazing.
honestly. this is one of the few channels where I learn something new every time I watch. I've been watching for over 2 years now and i wanna thank you. My band praises me for the techniques i bring in to our punk rock songs that not only make them not sound bland, but make them have something new to bring to the widely saturated punk rock scene. Thank you so much! keep it up. I have one request though. I would love a jack white episode. Please do so!
I think a bunch of songs that I love that I never knew who they were but they were just revealed! Thanks for pointing these things out! I too think very melodically and am, in fact, writing a book on triads for guitar!
This is exactly the technique I use, my old band played all the Weezer songs back in the day and ho early I’d nail all these guitar parts too...you’re playing them perfectly...
One of Weezer's most unique techniques is their harmonized staggered octaves. Good examples are during the bridge/buildup of My Name is Jonas and the buildup after the solo of Why Bother? Both guitars play harmonized octaves but one guitar moves on the downbeat and the other changes on the backbeat which creates a cool cascading feeling as the harmonies constantly pivot as they weave together upward.
Love me some blink, but I'd honestly be interested to see if he could do a video on them, as their songs are mostly just a mix of riffs, octave chords, and the I-VI-IV-V progression and its variations.
I'd love to see you break down some of the guitar techniques used on Weezer's White Album! That is one killer album. It's on par with their first two in my opinion. The guitar work is awesome as well.
Oh wow yes please first cd I bought as a teenager loved the fuzz and synth on Pinkerton so many great songs on blue and green and they just have a great catalog Still play say it ain’t so all the time Love in the garage no other one the good life I’m tired elscorcho I just threw out the love of my dreams Burndt jamb Dude you played most of my fav Songs the good life got me through my mid twenties
Was just gonna mention the ska upstrokes after the riff lol it really pairs up with that funk strumming well people don’t realize how funky this song is
Great Insight into Weezer Guitar , a lot of guitar players don’t realize how great and complex a lot of Weezer Songs are ... The Cool Chord Progression in “Smile” with Diminished / Augmented ? Chords and Cool Voice Leading Chords used in Jazz ... and Rivers Use of Octaves is Great ... In “ Holiday” he mostly uses just octaves in the chorus of the song ..: Rivers is just an Amazing Talent !!
LOL i learned Say it Aint So with my band when i was starting out. Didn't get any of the funk and also my bends in the chorus were trashhh i didn't know about unison bends. Great vid Mike, i love this series
Nice video! Love this series!! You're amazingly showing those techniques and giving inspiration! Could you do Marty Friedman next? He has a lot of inovational ideas
WOW I’ve only seen two vids but I’m ready to immerse myself in you’re channel I’m definitely checking out you’re website this content is well thought out and you’re very good at explaining the intricacies and habits/Styles of the artist I like how you threw in that rivers throws in that splash of sadness just wow I’m impressed with the in-depth detail can’t wait to check out a smashing pumpkins billy corgan vid I’ve been putting guitar on the side for a while to focus on my art but now I’m in a good place to multi task thanks bro.
I would refer to the intro/main melody for "No one else" as using "double stop power chords" or "triad power chords". I say this because chords like that are used extensively in emo rock to create hard driving melodies. It's basically double stops or triads for the low strings, with distortion added, using intervals to create the melody. Very common in emo.
Been using those octaves for years but I didn't know they were called spread octaves. I wouldn't call weezer technically demanding but I still really enjoyed this series. It's a great way to approach music theory and what techniques different bands use. Great idea an very entertaining.
Hell Yeah Weezer ❤️ I saw them Live last year wit the Pixies and Weezer was so awesome.... great band to see live ... bro I love this series... keep them coming ... thank you 🙌🏻
One thing I noticed that seemed incorrect was, in “Say It Ain’t So” in the chorus, the last chord is the low E version of the chord, not the barre at 7-9 It gives it much more of a thud and a driving impact. You can hear it on the studio version clearly.
dude i love your tone! i just can't get enough of it! hahahahah (yo could you do a video like this, but one for j mascis? would be really nice! hhehehhe)
Never paid much attention to Weezer but this was eye opening ..say it ain't so riff reminded me of red red chili pepper sound cool. Love that SG I'm a big Toni iommi fan
Brian doesn't play the Jonas intro live the way it's played on the record. He plays a simplified version of it.....the way you're playing it is truer to the record. So kudos!

“It starts off kinda positive but then it gets all dramatic and sad.” This quote embodies Weezer’s jump from Blue to Pinkerton 😂 love the video mike!
Founding guitarist Jason Cropper wrote the intro part to my name is Jonas. Unfortunately Brian Bell didn't play on the blue album. All guitars where tracked by Rivers after Jason left the band. Brian did however lay down backing vocals on the record.
Yeah and I think Cropper made the picking intro for The World Has Turned and Left Me Here and Surf Wax America
@@ObiWanKenobi i think those were based off of Jonas, but not written by cropper.
Brian also did the keyboards and harmonica on the album
@@ObiWanKenobi i know i'm 4 years late but i'm pretty sure the riff to surf wax america was actually written by patrick
I learned this album by ear from a teenager and over the years got it down more and more perfectly playing along with it, and it's gratifying to see I was correct on most it. But the jonas triad climb always stumped me.

This couldn't come at a better time, since I'm getting into Weezer right now!
Oh nice! I started in 1994
Listen to Songs from the Black Hole (Weezer's amazing unreleased)
Blue Album, Pinkerton, Everything Will Be Alright in the End, and the White Album, all you need. Plus the good hits from the other albums like Pork and Beans, Island in the Sun, Perfect Situation, etc...

You poor soul
Smashing Pumpkins next!
FUK YEEE
Yeah, that would be great!
Riley Johnson I was just about to comment that!
that'll be fun also Billie Joe Armstrong, which I think has some cool rhythms and great solo ideas.
yeee
Love Pinkerton, but nothing tops The Blue Album. That whole album rocks so much. The dual guitar solos at the end of Only in Dreams is perfection.
Right on man, fantastic album. I could listen to Blue start to finish and never get tired of it. Love Pinkerton too but there’s that special Weezer magic on Blue, and part of it is Ric Ocaesak’s stellar production and Rivers’s songwriting. I love pinkerton so much, but every time i play it on my turntable I feel like i broke something because of the rough production (Which isn't a complaint at all)
Pinkerton sounds better if you're in love.
I’m def a Pinkerton guy through and through, I think the guitar work and solos are far more emotional and fantastic but it’s all opinion
icky thump 800000 it’s not a complaint for me either, I kinda like it. Daniel Johnston had plenty a great record and they all sound like dogshit production wise.
Notable songs with cool guitar licks and why, I’ll start.
- Death and Destruction/ Maladroit- Weezer playing bluesy,
- No Other One/ Pinkerton- heavy with awesome arpeggios
- Susanne- Blue Album Deluxe Edition- heavy as balls.
I would add the song “You Gave Your Love to Me Softly” to that list. Really heavy riff
John Squire (stone roses) would be a cool one. Fairly unique style imo.
Jude Lince this would be really good to see
Agreed x2
On that unison bend in Say It Ain't So, he's actually playing the open E string on top of the 3rd string bend and the 5th fret of the B. Makes it sound much more full
The smashing pumpkins would be a great episode. Billy Corgan and James Iha are very under appreciated when it comes to their guitar work
Yeah, especially on their earlier stuff like _Gish_ and _Siamese Dream._ Like, when I first heard I Am One I was just blown away by the shredding on that song
So impressed with this lesson. The detail and care you put into the breakdowns. I wish I had a guitar teacher like you. Thanks for this.
hey mike, do you have any footage of you playing with weezer?
ua-cam.com/video/mzjYGapDoYU/v-deo.html short clip included
The blue album is the best thing for intermediate younger guitar players. Absolute perfect level of challenging but not unreachable. I very much suggest buying the tab book
Great video, straight to the point; this is how most guitar videos should be. Learning all these songs is how I learned to play guitar.
I learned to play guitar in '96. And I learned it all from that blue album tab book. Still use all these conventions in my own songwriting today
Johnny Marr please
I ´m playing guitar since more than 25 years. Your videos are pretty interesting! Thanks for sharing
Next time qotsa or foo fighters please. Great video as always.
Good playing. Good Break-down. Good guitar tone. And good to see a chap who knows what's what, loving Nirvana and the Blue Album.
This is a must-watch video for new guitarists that wants to get into playing alternative rock/power pop! Great video!
It’d be interesting to see one of these on Billie Joe Armstrong or Billy Corgan
Andrew Pappas I feel like Billie Joe Armstrong’s tone goes under a lot of people’s radar, yeah his playing is pretty much only powerchords but his tone is fucking amazing.
I love the power chords from A that also include the E string
honestly. this is one of the few channels where I learn something new every time I watch. I've been watching for over 2 years now and i wanna thank you. Love the Weez!!!
Geek rock rules! Hey Mike how about a Cake guitar technique video
I know . 12 people would LOOOVE it!😆😆
Fascinating video! I think Weezer songs are a lot of fun to play (if/when I play them right).
I needed this video 10 years ago, but still learned a couple of new things, great video!
So much meat on the BBQ! you really highlited the best nuances in their playing and uncovered the knowledge for unexperienced guitarist like me
Awesome video

These guitar technique lessons are insanely informative
So cool! Very interesting, would love to see a blink 182 version, I think they influenced how so many bands started playing the guitar.
Love me some blink, but I'd honestly be interested to see if he could do a video on them, as their songs are mostly just a mix of riffs, octave chords, and the I-VI-IV-V progression and its variations.
Connor Smith As simple as blink sounds, toms guitar parts were really interesting and layered, even if they were mostly simple
Tom's guitar work was so good during the early days (Buddha, Cheshire Cat and even Dude Ranch).
I never realized there’s so much going on with Weezer’s guitar parts!
I'd love to see you break down some of the guitar techniques used on Weezer's White Album! That is one killer album. It's on par with their first two in my opinion. The guitar work is awesome as well.
loving the way youre breaking this stuff down
amazing and clear job thank you
Weezer introduced me to the idea of those spread octaves, really comes in handy in jazz I found out years later
2/3 way through the video I was like 'bruh Pinkerton has more insane guitar stuff' and you went right into that album. Great vid.
Oh wow yes please first cd I bought as a teenager loved the fuzz and synth on Pinkerton so many great songs on blue and green and they just have a great catalog

Yeah, Marty Friedman would be great
Very cool. Keep it up!
Love it.
I'd never heard of pedal tone before, but I guess it's the same as bourdon (or bordun). Love that, use it all the time.
Been hooked since your Nirvana techniques.

Great video!
This was super helpful thank you
Great video!! I've been playing alot of weezer wrong....
Always enjoy your stuff :)

Wow this is a really good video
I'm big on hybrid picking for a lot of these instead of alternate picking
Hell Yeah Weezer ❤️ I saw them Live last year wit the Pixies and Weezer was so awesome.... great band to see live ... bro I love this series... keep them coming ... thank you 🙌🏻

Good stuff. Its amazing how applicable this is. Reminiscent of Rick Springfield Jesses Girl.
dude i love your tone! i just can't get enough of it! hahahahah (yo could you do a video like this, but one for j mascis? would be really nice! hhehehhe)
Amazing
Funny to see this uploaded as I've been binging Weezer for the last week or so
T shape and L shape are actually the same, and it's used in so much pop songs
Never paid much attention to Weezer but this was eye opening ..say it ain't so riff reminded me of red red chili pepper sound cool. Love that SG I'm a big Toni iommi fan
perfect timing, going to a weezer concert tm
GREAT VIDEO MAAAAAAAATE!
Could you make a tutorial on weezer's the good life? That would be cool
Jonny Greenwood next please!!
15:29 Did you ever have to knock on wood?
I like the thumbnail mike👌🏽
Never really listened to Weezer so this was very interesting. I'm a Metal-head and I am relly diggin Rivers style.
For the spread octaves, I don't really use my pinky finger, since I get good reach with my ring finger, and it makes muting easier. For me at least.
the part with the unison bends, for say it aint so it's only hit once but you bend up, down and back up again.
PS. I think the unison bend in Say It Ain't So isn't re-picked, it's one attack with two bends.
please do ween next, i know deaner has many tricks up his sleeve...
Aye, my favorite band!
I'd love to see your take on Thin Lizzy's greatest techniques
Aweasome video! How about Daniel Johns (from Silverchair) he has more more cool tehniques.
Brian doesn't play the Jonas intro live the way it's played on the record. He plays a simplified version of it.....the way you're playing it is truer to the record. So kudos!
The mad man actually did it
Good video
The ska upstrokes thing he played sounded like room with a view by the interrupters
