This song was about the Mississppi flood in 1922(?). Thousands of African Americans were left homeless and many of them headed north to Chicago to escape the South's racism, and poverty.
killer song from the mighty Zeppelin. Robert Plant on the harmonica. The late great John Bonham killing the drums. Glad to see you reacting to one of the greatest bands who influenced many musicians past and present. Another great Zeppelin track to react to is Dazed and Confused..

Deep dense sound. Modern bands spend an awful lot of money trying to recreate it. Amazing what muscicians and producers could do with the limited tech available. Pure ingenuity.
That's one of the most frustrating things about music during isolation. A lot of bands are holding out on releasing albums so they don't lose money, but they could make music with minimal budgets and put out amazing material that their fans will 100% get behind and they're not trying. Not even with EPs. They've become reliant on spending money to make their vision happen when they can do it in a practical and inexpensive way.
Technology is helping kill rock and roll! They had all the building blocks needed for incredible sound and the production was done by actual musicians! The rest comes from one's soul, not a keyboard.
Drums by John Bonham is immaculate and was sampled many times in rap music, but most famously by The Beastie Boys on their debut album on a song called Rhyming and Stealin'
The lyrics are from a Memphis Minnie song from ages ago about the flood of 1927. But musically, it's all original Led Zeppelin. Page made this thing as plodding, dark and muddy as the river itself. Brilliant.

I remember Argo the Ben Affleck´s film ,when the gates of the embassy are about to break because of the crowd and while the Led Zeppelin IV playing this song is falling to the plate... great scene.
Yeah I don't know exactly when that changed. I originally subscribed to this channel because they would go line by line through the lyrics and give their interpretation. Now it's just the theme of the song kicks off stories about their lives with no real discussion of the music or lyrics.
The New Orleans levees failed during Katrina cos W. Bush cut funding for the structure (it was supposed to withstand a Cat. 5 hurricane, but it was halted at Cat. 3) and then bungled the emergency response in the aftermath cos of the idiots employed in his administration that mismanaged the bureaucracy... THEN, he screwed up the hurricane Sandy relief operations... The Deepwater Horizon disaster was another W. Bush debacle in the Gulf Coast, cos BP cut corners to save a half-million dollars to install an emergency oil cap on the rig, and the administration OK'd that structure which was promised to be "unsinkable". Well, it sank in the 1st year and Pres. Obama was left w/ a massive BP oil spill that cost BP and New Orleans BILLION$ that could've been avoided by spending a half million dollar$...

I was 10 hours in a flooding cellar with the pressure waves hitting my ear drums the whole time. Oh dear oh dear. The last wind measuring device on the island broke at 200kmph. Welcome, Michael! 😄 Since you're new, I'm going to give you a quick rundown. Vin was raised in Jamaica, had a hip-hop background in his teen and young adult years and refused to listen to anything rock aside from specific grunge and nu-metal bands and Metallica out of youthful arrogance, was submitted to mental care, and found God, not really being a radio listener or taking note of songs he heard in films. Sori comes from one of those really devout Christian families that didn't let her listen to sinful music, narrowing her music taste to pop, country, and later a little r&b and other genres like that. Most of the massive rock songs a lot of normal people have heard aren't in their range of experience. I've been here since the beginning of the channel and can confirm these are fresh listens, aside from a few songs where Vin recognizes things as having been part of certain memories but couldn't put a name to the sound. They thought John Lennon was alive, and Vin wanted to interview him. Megadeth was one of the worst received first listens on the channel. Vin only knew of Guns N' Roses because of the Montreal Riot when James Hetfield got burned. He called Synyster Gates M. Shadows. It goes deep. This is honestly ridiculous stuff, but it confirms they're sincere, and it's really fun to follow along with. I think you'll have a blast watching their reactions if long commentary with random personal discussion is for you!!! 😂

@@craigmatthews4289 Vin and Sori don't usually watch songs they haven't reacted to themselves. It's more of an "Okay, here's what we got from it, now let's see what Alex Hefner thought" thing.
This particular song was a cover of Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie from1929. The lyrics are about the experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. The most destructive river flood in the history of the United States, with 27,000 square miles inundated in depths of up to 30 feet. The **uninflated** cost of the damage has been estimated to be between 246 million and 1 billion dollars. In 1927!! That's about 20 Billion dollars adjusted for inflation. To use your electrical cord as an example, it would be the equivalent of you wrapping that cord an extra 4 or 5 times and then having a bolt of lightning directly strike the outlet it was plugged into. Not only would the tape be melted, the the entire cord would be disintegrated. SO, while I totally appreciate that prior proper planning prevents poor performance, this was quite an exception.
Many have no clue that Zeppelin's roots are in the Blues. It's much more prevalent in their early stuff. They have that in common with ZZ Top and a few other bands from that time.
