The mighty, mighty Led Zeppelin. The greatest band of all time. 99 out of 100 of their songs are legendary. Dude, this band is gonna change your life for the better.
So we gotta talk about those drums; Zep recorded those in the middle of a fancy mansion out in the countryside on a mobile studio in a truck they rented from the Rolling Stones. John Bonham set up his drum kit at the bottom of a spiral staircase, and they set up the mics at the top to capture that natural ambient reverb. To this day, it's one of the most sampled drum beats ever, most prominent being "Rhymin' and Stealin'" by the Beastie Boys.
I saw Page and Plant perform their "No Quarter " in the 90s. Believe me, Led Zeppelin broke up when i was 6 . This show Jimmy Page was as amazing, Robert Plant sang for 2 hours and 90% were Zeppelin. Sounded like Led Zeppelin to us. Amazing.
WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS was written by Memphis Minnie (June 3, 1897 -- August 6, 1973) was an American blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. She was the only female blues artist considered a match to male contemporaries as both a singer and an instrumentalist.
The best band ever. I been listening to them over half my life. The Blues with a rock accent, flavored with LSD. The perfect place and time. Just 4 guys on the stage!
The band recorded the basic instrumental tracks to this song at a slightly quicker tempo. The tape was then slowed down a bit. This simple analog recording technique is what gives the song its dense hypnotic trance like atmosphere. Terrific reaction JRV. Thanks for sharing, RNB
You're hearing the Led Zeppelin catalogue for the first time? LOL. I was the youngest of 7 back in the 1970s, I heard Led Zeppelin for the first time when my big brothers and sisters would get back from the record store, run up the stairs, unwrap the record and throw it on the record player. The subject matter was mature enough so that Mom didn't want my young ears exposed to it, so I caught it from the crack under my brothers and sisters bedroom doors. A lot of times there would be a funny smell coming from under that door too.
Their just too good, nobody else can make me feel the music the way Zeppelin does. Damn! Many good bands have 3, 5, or even 10 great songs; Zeppelin has nearly their entire catalogue!!!! Too great for words.
John Bonham's right foot was...'The Hammer of the God's.' Each song is a 'work of art yet undeniably Led Zeppelin. Looking forward to you hearing 'Achiles Last Stand' off the album Presence. Keep rockin'.... ✌😎
For serious, I love your zep reactions. I like that you look at the songs in the context of the whole album, I like that you know the names of audio filters and tech, and I like that you do research after the reaction for further info. Keep it coming, man. Thanks.
It cracks me up that you younger people finally discovered the magic of Led Zeppelin. This was not done in a studio, but a dude with his drum set, a guitar god, Jimmy Paige, John Paul Jones, base and keyboards, Bonzo the drummer and over course that voice of Robert Plant. This my young loves, is talent.. I was listening to this music when I was 16. Glad you've caught up to us!
Absolutely ingenious reaction. I like that you are musically educated, I don't know if you are self-taught or in school, but it is definitely a great reaction.
One of Bonham's best drum moments is 'Fool in the Rain' you wont believe it. Too many to list but that song from 'In Through The Out Door' album is perfection!
Bro- I just said that above- almost word for word- I hadn’t seen your comment. While every Zeppelin album is iconic ( except In through the Out Door) - Physical Grafitti is the most jaw dropping in my opinion.
Nobody can mangle the blues to such glorious effect like Led Zeppelin. I'm not a huge Robert Plant guy as a rule, but his harmonica in this song is one if the best things to ever happen. He is definitely a musical guy and not just a tall hippie with a sock stuffed in his spray on pants lol.
The drums were sampled by a UK synthesizer company for their Emulator drum machine, available as a 'Rock Chip' Eprom upgrade. So you can hear Bonham's snare and bass drum on bands like Tears For Fears, Howard Jones, Cocteau Twins (whose entire 'Treasure' album was recorded with them).
I love that you're a young dude but appreciate the whole Album concept. Albums as their own unit concept. Not just compilations of Hits of every band, but the artistic endeavor of the Album. Its great to see a young person get the concept. Beautiful.
Zeppelin was blues influenced and it showed in "When The Levee Breaks." "Gallows Pole" was another song Zeppelin did that was originally "The Gallows Song" by Leadbelly and "Whole Lotta Love" was a Muddy Waters song called "You Need Love". Robert played the harp.
This, Black Dog, Tangerine, and Thank You are probably my favorite LZ songs, but it's so hard to choose because their body of work is so incredible. There are a lot of great tracks on the albums you haven't gotten to yet too. You're in for a treat or two and thanks for taking us with you on the journey.
Read the background on this song...Mississippi delta flooding in the south in the 30s I think? I don't think the organ was used...Jimmy's guitar. The people left the delta area for Chicago to find work.
1927 hurricane hit new orleans up the river. The us army core of engineers says that same hurricane again (due to the levys) would have 20 feet of water on Canal St. If you know the city you know thats the high ground.
Little pro-tip for you you Jay from someone who listens to a lot of Zep. The "dark remaster" that you listened to is a fan remaster of the audio mix on youtube. IMO it's the best mix, and that engineer has done that to a few Zeppelin songs I believe on youtube I believe. And the thing is because the mix is different it helps it not be copyright detected on youtube so it stays up. You should search that channel and use their remasters for your reactions in the future if you can because of this.
Hey, I appreciate your honesty with your reviews. Thats a rarity with reviewers as I think they believe they will get more likes and views if they are overly positive about everything they hear. People should be able to see right through that. Everything cant be incredible, even from incredible iconic artists.Thank you for your honest thoughts and opinions.
I didn't see anyone mention that the harmonica Plant was playing was played in reverse. That's why it has such an unusual sound. Killer song. Thanks for reacting!
This song is one hell of an exercise for time keeping, self-control and pocket for the drummers out there. No spicy fills or chops, just straight groove like a freight train. Other great songs that I like to play for the same purpose are I Won't Back Down (Tom Petty), Billie Jean and Vultures (by John Mayer) to name a few.
You should have been there......40,000 hard core Zepelin fans....grooving.....they'd nail the songs dig deep.....You should have been at their shows !!!
Great reaction. This song was a fitting culmination to one of the best rock albums of all time. Jimmy Page was not only an amazing guitarist and songwriter, he also produced all of Zeppelin's albums. So the sound, and the mixing was done per his direction.
Memphis Minnie---1927 a Black blues Lady that could ROCK the blues and play a mean guitar!!! I love Black Folks reacting to this and feeling that connection to Mississippi River Delta blues. I love watching ANYONE that enjoys the Blues reacting to this !! Mean ol' levee.....
You have quickly become (out of the new myriad of first reactioneers) my favorite to watch. So many times (especially when it comes to Rush) I can see the light shining the moment you realize what is going on in the minds of the lyricists. You just get it. More than the rest, so then the best yeh
I have a story about Led Zeppelin. They were notorious for debauchery including relations with minors and transvestites. They were on tour, in the US in the 1970s. And they played Seattle. Years earlier, The Beatles were going to play Seattle but every hotel refused to have them. There was a struggling hotel that decided to welcome the Beatles and that saved the hotel from bankruptcy. It was the Edgewater Inn. It was facing a bay and guests could literally fish from their balconies. It became the favorite spot for touring bands. Fast forward to the 70s. Led Zeppelin stayed there and invited some groupies to party. Somebody caught a juvenile shark from the balcony. Now the debauchery starts. With groupies available some member of the group introduced a groupie to the shark in a horrible way. Robert Plant has denied taking part but it did happen. That's the famous Led Zeppelin shark story. I hope I wasn't too vague. It was as bad as you can imagine.
Great review of a killer track. What drums and harp! By the way, Jay Rah, I believe you will come around on "Misty Mountain Hop" at some point in the future. There are MANY rock classics I didn't warm up to immediately, but now see as the stellar, scintillating timeless gems that they are. It's all part of the ride, sir. Enjoy! Next check out the "Houses of the Holy" album, my personal fave- as phenomenal as Zep IV is.
Awesome reaction bro! I'm not used to people knowing what's going on with the production. The flange and the phaser and the structure. Legendary drum track. Subscribing for sure man
I’ve watched a few of the older reactions you’ve done FIR, but when you started naming off all the zeppelin you’ve reacted to I hit that sub button quick. I love to watch you feeling it!! ❤️
Hey Jay, great reaction. Led Zeppelin signed a deal that gave them a lot of artistic freedom. The old blues songs that they redid - they transformed them in a way that no one else did or could. If you research the old recordings you'll see. That artistic freedom allowed them to do Black Dog and the Battle of Evermore on the same album. Both very different but great in their own right. (You mentioned about songs being their own entity) Over the years I've heard people shit on LZ for different reasons and it breaks my heart because they were special. I think that most people who don't like LZ only know their radio hits. If you look below the surface there is so much more.
Robert Plant is blowin' that badass harp.
Harmonica

It would be awesome to see you react to Rhymin and Stealin if you never heard it before.
All true, but the drums also have an echo. Rick Beato did a whole video recreating the sound.
The only reason to talk about Zeppelin is the drums. They broke up when he died. No Bonham. No Zeppelin.
Amazing.
@@bartstarr100 That's true. But the 2007 O2 Arena reunion concert with John's son Jason on drums is pretty damn good. A good facsimile for me.
I just love how this young man is digging on this song so hard!!👍✌♥️♥️

Led Zeppelin is often described as "the blues on steroids"......this song is the blues on gamma rays!!!!
Blues on lsd?

Robert Plant has been playing harmonica since he was a little kid. He’s quite good!
I’ll say😅
Their just too good, nobody else can make me feel the music the way Zeppelin does. Damn! Many good bands have 3, 5, or even 10 great songs; Zeppelin has nearly their entire catalogue!!!! Too great for words.

Robert Plant lead singer plays the harmonica and Bonzo on drums
The Ocean, Trampled Under Foot, House of the Holy, Babe I'm gonna Leave You, Misty Mountain Top and No Quarter. All amazing!

Greatest cover song ever recorded. Written by Kansas Joe McCoy about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and the mass exodus to Chicago as a result.

Great reaction, man! I'm so glad you looked and found the history of the tune - that's good work.
If I could name my all-time favorite song, it might just be this one.
This tune is used for the credits at the end of the movie The Big Short. It was perfect in that.
it's an old blues song by Memphis Minnie- I had it as a ring tone for a while- but Zep put the stank on it and the rest is legend
Getting back to the G.O.A.T!! ✌️so much more to react to!! That Physical Graffiti album will change your mind of favorite LZ album!
your right the the instrumentation is flawless, but man those drums!
To quote Joe Perry ( lead guitarist of Aerosmith ) when he spoke of Led Zeppelin: "In every album, they shift through all 6 gears".......end quote.
This drum track has been used as much as Clyde Stubblefield. Was recorded in the entryway of Jayne Seymore's family castle
Certain types of chocolates, your pulsating background, and of course, this song, have all combined to give me an amazing experience right now.
