This is the hardest thing for a ballerina to do. As a former ballerina myself, I can admit I never got to accomplish this awesome feat, of 32 fouettes in a row. Most of us don't. The most awesome performance I saw was Swan Lake done by American Ballet Theater. The Prima Ballerina Assoluta, Natalia Makarova is the one who did this. I have never seen anyone dance so perfectly, & she never even looked tired. It is impressive when any dancer can do 32 fouettes. :)
I've seen this coda a million times with a million different ballerinas and this is my favorite by far, which is odd bc I don't tend to care for American ballerinas (I'm a incurable Lopatkina and Zakharova stan). So many try to do this daintily, but Wehner's approach here is 100% power and attack. It is a very American interpretation and it is absolutely breathtaking.
It’s crazy how it isn’t nearly as easy as it looks. I remember as a kid in ballet for like a year, I didn’t even know where it was going, I just got bored and dropped it. I honestly don’t remember dancing on stage anymore. Just looking at the other girls when I forgot what to do LMAO
@@klp3 As someone from neither the US or Russia/Ukraine. The point is that eastern European ballet was the best in the world in 1820 and it's still the best in 2020. Nearly all the greatest of all time came through the Russian/Romanian/Ukrainian systems. No disrespect to Sharon Wehner(though considering how many teachers hail from the above nations I bet she has some Russian in her dancing).
@@GorgDjdjd-wo4dy generally, 100 percent agreed, Vaganova is second to none. As for fouettes, Kiev State Ballet School has girls fouette double or without arms in the graduate class, possible Vaganova does it in class, I have not studied there, but rarely seen it in exams. Check out these Kiev graduates from 2018. The girl at 1:47 .. ua-cam.com/video/Zv5n4x0KJ14/v-deo.html Just 32 single fouette is the bare minimum. I am not saying it is still an achievement. I am saying, with correct training, it will be that, basic achievement, no miracle.
Dance is an art form, not the olympics....I think the point is not to do fouettés just for technical merit but to enhance the narrative of the character.
I taught this to myself but instead it goes in instead of out like hers did, is it still fouettes? (I only did ballet when I was little for 1 year and for 4 months when I was 12, so I don't know much)
It actually depends. It used to be in act 2? I think. As a pas de duex for Odette and Siegfried but not with the 32 fouettés. Now usually though it is used as “The Black Swan Coda” in act 3 with the 32 fouettés.
a famous ballerina, i forget who, was reported by a journalist to have done 32 in a performance. the ballerina in her journal wrote that she did 24. now if you want to be impressed, look at marianela nunez doing 26 flawlessly on the royal opera channel.
The point is that the choreographer wanted to make the audiences jaws drop and even if it's now something fairly common for dancers to be able to do it still makes the crowd go wild. I mean this is like half the point of classical dance, it's not really a narrative medium - yes there is a story and sometimes it can be beautifully told, but it's also something special to sit in the audience and see people who have dedicated their lives to this art do things that seem inhumanly fast, graceful, strong etc.. that's a long answer to your question that you probably don't care about but maybe it will help someone else understand ballet. Also there is some point in the story, this is her being presented to the prince who is the dude who comes on stage at the end, so it's point in story in her impressing him is much the same as it's point to the audience.
With all due respect....She's so slow. They carry her with the slow tempo. You want to see real 32 magic watch Russian balerinas do it. This one is not even close. Sorry
this was good, but not the best. she travelled a lot but I think thats bc her arm movement could be improved. but I give her credit cos she was always on her leg.
She almost lost balance on one of her fouettes around 0:20, and after that she was a bit off-beat so she didn't keep going to get the last one because it would've extended past the music, I think
She’s just doing the same move over and over again. This is an impressive ATHLETIC feat, but dancing it is not! Dancing is PATTERNWORK. Still, it’s an impressive athletic feat! ❤

neenee56 the 11 year old Chloe Lukasiak did it
she wasn't on pointe though
Ive done it
Dame Darcy Bussell used to do it nightly also ! They make it look easy ! 👌🏻
Gabriella Penfold season 2 she was 10.
I danced from the ages of 3-14. I think I was able to do ONE fouetté. This is tremendous.
In my youth I ATTEMPTED a fouetté. I fell out. A lot. You are my hero.
I can only do about 15 😂
She makes it look so effortless.
Just saw one of my mom's dancers whip out 40 of these bad boys. The crowd was in awe
Whaat
lol yeah but was there any actual dancing?
She makes it look so effortless, which is a major difference between dance and sports.
I always get excited when I see this piece
Woo-hooo!!!! Mind-blowing! Always a thrill to see a ballerina pull this off! Greetings from Nebraska!

Everyone in audience : it's so easy for her she is a swan 🦢
Her while doing the fouettés : My toes are breaking and I just lost two toe nails 🙃
Oof
And also: how many more do I have left ahhhh
I just did my first 16 in a row yesterday 😁
Half way there. Keep it up!🥰

Wow Incredible. The most I can do is maybe 10 on a good day. 32 is insane and her technique was stunning.
She looks so joyful and beautiful. It's so wonderful to watch.
AMAZING!
Uauuuu! Incrível! 🙏❤️💐👏👏👏🇧🇷🖖

Odile really is a swan princess!
Brilliant
How does she do this I can only do 6. She is amazing.
Um dia chego lá
It reminds me with Son Yeon Jae Ribbon 2013 😯
In Russia/Ukraine, basically all of the ballet school´s graduates will be able to do this (or double)
How nice. What's your point?

People who say ballet is not a sport need to try this i have been dancing since i was four and now im sixteen and i can only do like five
i counted 31?
My stepmom sent me this bc. I am an mma fighter and she said this is how it looks whenever I kick
Great!

Who else counted 🤔😂
*hi idk* of course you count
JANICE LAWRENCE what does that mean lol
i’m actually trying to learn how to do a fouetté for fun since during in the pandemic and winter break i’ve been interesting in doing ballet at home
Fabelhaft!!!😊
how do you do that and not puke? or break a toe?
For sure ill learn how to do one after this by just watching lol
How'd that work out for ya
omg i dance here!!!!
i can do 4, so that is amazing
Qual nome dessa música ???
She should dance at Bolshoy!
Criação
Pierina Legnani
👏👏👏
Okay, what witch craft is this? How did she stay on the spot?
Nice.
I can only do maybe 2 or 3 of them lol

no thats an en sedan turn, your leg needs to move outwards to get the correct momentum and alignment
In which act is that?
third -- back in the palace, presenting Odille to the prince
It actually depends. It used to be in act 2? I think. As a pas de duex for Odette and Siegfried but not with the 32 fouettés. Now usually though it is used as “The Black Swan Coda” in act 3 with the 32 fouettés.
Ley Nina third
ending without a double seems....off somehow. she almost got pulled off by the applause, too lol
she looks like she is having fun, though!
are you supposed to be in sync with the music in the background or a little faster?
Did anyone notice that she secretly moved forward intentionally a bit in each turn? it makes it harder, wow. 😮
ATTACK IT ATTACK IT
I only can do about 7
Me: does 2 in a row
Me: YES
Her: does 32 in a row
Me: WOAH
Sophia lucia: HAH *casually does 50 in a row and wins world record*
Me:……..I-
I came here after the Ted ed explanation video
What's the relevance or logic of doing 32 or more to the performance or story?

Тяжеленная, как гиря.
Слишком медленно делает. Фуэте вообще то надо делать почти на одном месте, а не так как она. Она все время двигается вперед и вправо.

@@debrakateri2979 yes, I've danced for 14 years, specifically ballet

I knew that wasn't really Natalie Portman.

BRO SAME LMAO
Her arms did get a tiny bit lazy at the end though...
Edit: er, perhaps “clunky” is the right word.
Fastest on record - Rowena Jackson NZ'er
well I can do 3. 😂

Her face is screaming White Swan. Where is the evil of Odile?
I can just about do 3 fouettes on a good day...
I never said they were good fouettes
She did an amazing job but....hnngg that right arm
you would do it better?
Ей далеко до уровня русских балерин.
The boorish audience applauded during the performance.
She’s just doing the same move over and over again.
