Serviceberry (genus Amelanchier) is a great tree! However, the idea that it got the common name "serviceberry" from springtime funeral "services" is a myth. The common name "serviceberry" or "sarvisberry" arose because the berries of Amelanchier trees resemble the fruits of (unrelated) trees in the genus Sorbus. Some trees in the genus Sorbus came to be called "service" or "sarvis" when the original Latin-based name migrated into English.
