      Hi Jim, I have asked this 3 times already and I don't want to be a pest, so last time. What do I do for my Persian parrotia tree that I received via mail order when it was only a few inches tall and now , years later, it's about 5 or 6 feet. I still have it in a large pot, but I never trained it and it doesn't have a single leader but rather 2 that are at a wide angle, neither one really in the center. Can it be fixed, and, if so, how ?

    I need to prune my trees!! You really just can’t trust people nowadays to do it right!! We have huge oaks in front yard that are beautiful and I think you let me know it was ok to plant under them and I have loved my beds! They have done well! I had someone prune them last year and they looked terrible but they are finally looking good this year!!
    My dad was always a great garden man and that is where my live started!! He used cement to fuse a cracked big oak in our front yard growing up and it still beautiful today from the 70s!! My sis lives there!! Parents passed!!
    We have oaks in our yard that are huge and I I’ve on Weiss lake in Alabama! Our house was built in 1890s! Way before our lake was even here!! Love all the history! I love that you appreciate North Carolina! I still live in my hometown and I am 50! I work in Georgia and have for over 20 years as nurse but still Alabama girl!! My husband is a several generation cotton farmer and still has one of the first cotton pickers made!! Amazing!!

    Okay, you're seriously freaking me out with the Serviceberry tree. I have always read to pick out a tree's "leader" and then leave it alone. If you cut back the leader branch, the tree will forever grow funky. That you are sending a message to the tree to grow wide, not tall. What are your thoughts on leader branches? I literally had my hand on my heart during that portion of the video. Haha!

    • @Brandon-yr3nj
      @Brandon-yr3nj 2 роки тому +1

      the parts of a plant that get the most sunlight will grow the strongest. a leader is just a branch that is guaranteed to get the most light and become the thickest and tallest. the plant will still grow up without a leader, but with a wider canopy, probably with multiple leading trunks.
      if you chopped the ‘leader’ off at the ground, then you’d just have a regular multi-trunk tree. cutting the leader higher just encourages that branching at a taller point on the tree.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  2 роки тому +6

      Two things. 1 Serviceberry can be grown as a multi trunk shrub so frequently they are just cut to the ground to grow them that way.
      2 This tree already has multiple leaders. It was pruned that way at the nursery. They top them at a certain height to begin their branching.
      Also it doesn't have to make the tree wider. You can keep very vertical growth in the future and cut out horizontal growth. You're in charge, not the tree.

    • @susanbaker2796
      @susanbaker2796 2 роки тому +2

    I have a tree peony -only 2nd year in the ground. I’m guessing it is a grafted plant because this year I can see different leaves and two buds that are a different color. I’m assuming I can trace that back to where the growth starts and prune it out? I searched a bit online but haven’t seen anything about root stack peonies. Just assuming since it happens with roses it can happen with a peony. Is this correct? Love your pruning videos. Gives me confidence to take control!

    I have read (several times) that you shouldn't prune more than 1/3 of a tree at a single time, but it looked like you took more than 1/3 of the serviceberry. Maybe that rule doesn't apply to healthy and vigorous shrubs like the azaleas or the viburnum, but does it only apply to more mature trees, unlike the serviceberry, or is it OK to disregard that rule for all trees? Also, should you wait until the plant has had one or two growing seasons to get established before undertaking that kind of pruning? Your videos are great educational tools, like going to gardening school!. Thanks.

    This was an excellent tutorial for pruning. Two questions. On the shrub that had those tall straight branches coming up from the bottom, does it hurt to leave them or were you just afraid it would change the shape? On the tree pruning, how does that impact the leader? I have a younger emperor one and the leader along with a few larger branches tend to weep. (Top of the leader is actually bent over with top touching the ground.) I do need to readdress the staking, but seemed like something else should be done as well. Seeing this video made me think it might be having the same issue as you described and just can't hold that much weight yet. Thanks in advance. Your videos are always so informative.

    In trimming viburnums, would annually pruning them a little bit encourage a thicker growth habit? I have some growing into a border between my neighbors and I and, only in hindsight could I have planted the copper top viburnums a bit closer to get that hedge going sooner. Would a bit of pruning encourage these to grow more or is it more of a size control once at that stage?

    Question: I have a Rising Sun Redbud that we got last spring. We had to stake it because like your service berry it was top heavy for the size if the trunk. We tried taking the staking off this spring but it still is not strong enough right below the graft. It wants to fall over. So I trimmed off about a foot or so from each branch and re-staked it. Is there anything I can do to help below the graft? I'm in zone 7a Murfreesboro, TN and we get alot of wind at my house. I'm trying to get it to stand alone without stakes. Okay I have to ask about the stake on your service berry. It looks nice and robust. I have a bunch of thin metal stakes that are not robust enough for one of the skinny trees in the back I am staking. Where did you get that big thick stake?

      I had the same question, but I solved it myself. I bought an 8-foot piece of 2x2 pine lumber at the big hardware store for $5. I used a saw to make a sharp point on one end. I pounded it into the ground right next to my skinny tree from atop a step ladder. It’s strong. Hint: it’s easier to plant a stake if you soften the ground the day before with a deep watering.

    Maybe I’ve taken the “prune after blooming” too seriously. I kind of thought I was too late to prune back old type azaleas right now since they bloomed in March. I’m in zone 7B/8A south of Charlotte. May I still prune and have flowers next year?

    I have a flamethrower redbud that definitely has a weeping habit rather than lateral branches. Is there anyway to correct that? Thanks.

      I would try pruning a little off the branch end to lighten them up. That may help

    Jim, nice video. I’m getting ready to prune a 15 foot camellia. Will need the chainsaw. You sound like me when bending over working 😁

    I have to ask...why plant something you have to prune so MUCH? Why not plant something less vigorous?

    You need a Chihuahua to rid your yard of rabbits. Mine is a hunter... when I moved in here, he chased out rabbits, cats and killed two rats. I cleaned out the brush where the rats may have had their nests. Chihuahuas were bred to kill rats.
