This angle really shows how small your front yard is, which makes it all the more impressive how much you've been able to pack in this space and still have each thing make an impact. I'm excited to see what else you do.

You frequently mention your small city lot, but today is the first time it actually looked small! It’s enjoyable watching you transform it. Perfect tree choice, they’re so beautiful year round. I like that you get the beauty of the dark berries, but no mess thanks to the birds.

After our neighbor cleared his land we've been losing trees to various fungi. I love my native dogwoods, but we've lost quite a few. Thanks for narrowing down my choice for a service berry tree.

@@JimPutnam This is why I wonder about the advice to have a soil sample checked for pH. If you have typical urban (or suburban) soil, where the quality of the soil can be very different in different areas of your property, it seems that you would have to send out a separate sample from every part of the yard. Hopefully some company will come up witha soil pH meter for home use that is inexpensive, easy to use, and accurate.

Jim, I'm in the Mid West and I LOVE the color story the Autumn Briliance Serviceberry gives! It's so pretty! I see that it looks as though you have her planted pretty close to the house there. How is her root system? Is she safe to plant next to say, a house foundation or near a fence?

Hi from the other side of the pond. I also have a small front garden which has the amelanchier robin hill variety. Recently purchased a Magnolia Felix Jury which also provides a big impact but it's a 1 season tree vs the amelanchier which as you quite rightly have stated is a very good 4 season tree. The roots are quite shallow ...so can be transplanted. The comment about small trees establishing better in the long term is one I totally agree with. BR, Harvey

Hi Jim! My goal is to chip away at the large amount of lawn I have and to plant more wildlife supporting trees/shrubs and a serviceberry tree or shadbush is what I’m looking for! I was thinking about putting it in a spot on my property but very close to my neighbors side - these don’t really drop their fruit or make too much of a mess, right? I’m trying to be considerate on what I put there....although ultimately I think the birds’ needs will win out. I found one locally but it was around $400 (very large size) and my area hasn’t been prepped yet, so I had to pass.

Hi Jim, loved the video, and the bird! I've planted 10 trees this spring/summer season. All instructions and videos I have read or watched have said to fill in hole 1/2 way with dirt, water to let the dirt settle and fill the rest of the dirt and tamp. I noticed you filled it all in at once. Is there a difference? Right way, wrong way?
Also, the Newport Purple Leaf Plum tree I planted seems to have sunken down into the ground from the soakings I had to give it all summer long she to lack of rain. They say not to plant it any lower than the level of the ground. Which I followed to the tee. But I saw that you planted yours approximately an inch higher. Probably what I should have done. Finally the question: Do I need to now pull the tree back up and replant it higher? I'm worried about the base of the tree rotting. Especially because this is an area that I will be working with regularly because of the flowers I have planted around it.

    • @SweetStuffOnMonarchLane
      @SweetStuffOnMonarchLane 2 роки тому

One of the biggest reasons trees end up dying is because they're planted too deep. It causes the roots to rot. It's better for them to be a bit too high than too low. It also gives some room for mulch too, but don't put it close to the trunk so it doesn't suffocate the tree. I would replant it higher if I were you... It's the best thing for the tree.

I cut down a large maple 5 years ago and ground the stump and its just now decomposing to the point I can plant, and there is still hard wood under the surface that has yet to break down. I've kept it covered with compost, don't know if it makes a huge difference but it can't hurt. I live in a very cold climate though so if you're in a warmer part of the country your stump could decompose faster.

    Revelation 21: 8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
    Romans 5: 8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
    John 3: 16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
    John 14: 6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
    Romans 10: 9-10.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
    John 5: 24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
    1John 5: 10-13
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
    Ephesians 2: 8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
    Romans 8: 1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    1 Corinthians 15: 3-4
    For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
    2 Corinthians 5: 21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

But 'Autumn Serviceberry' is a man-made hybrid so you really/honestly/ethically CANNOT call it a "native" in the same breath and similar smugness as a true, straight-species native plant. And, putting soil amendments IN the planting hole is "old wisdom" from like 30+ years ago! How can you be so ignorant when you have hte likes of NCSU Extension, the JC Raulston Arb, Sarah P Duke Gardens and NCBG right there in the Triangle!!!

Amelanchier are so confused in taxonomy, because they cross so regularly in nature. So by this logic, none of them would be native. If we don't allow for improvements in native plants, very few people will buy them. I sold plants for 30 years. People aren't interested in itea that you dig up in the woods. Preaching won't change that.
      .
I have many videos talking about the fact that you don't have to amend the soil when planting. Thanks for watching.

You look very young and so can somewhat forgive your smug replies. As you age, you will find that sometimes, well, you’re just wrong.
