I enjoyed your vid. Stainless steel for me every time. And if any kiddies are watching this at home....wear boots around the campfire. It saves having your camping trips cut short for a visit to the doctor with burnt or blistered feet.
Really appreciate the platform you have created in the space of cooking on the fire….. gave me the confidence to try it out for my first time recently. Now I’m about to buy my first spun “steel” pan and will start to take my bbq a lot less with me less now on trips!
We love our stainless steel pan from Solidteknics. It goes great on the van induction stove. Previously had a high quality non-stick pan, and while it was very good, all food stuck to it!
1/ Eggs cook better in BUTTER > has a higher moisture content which helps form a barrier between pan and egg. 2/ SOLIDTEKNICS > AUS-ION™ 26cm Frypan $190 and Made in AUSTRALIA . A one piece skillet from clean Australian WROUGHT IRON that comes pre-seasoned. these things will last for generations , and made in Sydney. ... i bought the smaller 19cm because i don't have any friends 😂. 3/ Try MASTERFOODS " EVERYTHING EGGS " spice. i love it and use it fried eggs , egg and bacon pie. 👌
I'm going to get myslelf an AUS-ION 26cm frypan. They look great, but I'm not convinced they are wrought IRON. I reckon they are just plain old steel. Otherwise I'd love to know where they are sourcing sheets of pure iron.
Great information. For the moment ill be sticking with my stainless pot & pan set from Drifta, plus my old spun steel Bedourie. I use your water droplet test on my stainless to make sure its hot enough. Works great and cleans up easy at camp. Cheers, hope you are really enjoying for new caravan setup for the family.
Haven’t tried a spun ‘steel’ but I love my cast iron pan for cooking steaks. But the cool down time and seasoning can be a pain but worth it 👍🏽great episode Harry.
Great video, however as an unapologetic member of the anti teflon pan club I will every time die on the hill that there isn't a single thing you can do in a teflon pan that can't be done and done better and safer in a steel pan. Now so far as steel goes, I'd encourage folks to get Carbon Steel (close enough to spun steel to call them the same) at any turn. They provide all the same benefits as cast iron with the benefit of amazing weight savings. I am one of those chefs who would argue all day that if I could only have one pan, I would take a carbon steel pan over stainless every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Not that I hate stainless because I don't, I think they are amazing. I just find carbon steel to be a superior option in every way.
@@jonwilson6077 For something that's a higher acid and longer cook, like a Bol, yes SS. If it's a quick lower heat coo, I've used carbon and cast iron for quick cook acidic without issue. The key is not letting anything high acid sit either on or off heat for a long time in carbon or cast.
Try a Solidteknics quenched pan - I have one and find it's a great in between pan - has benefits of both a spun 'steel' pan and also a cast iron! Same same as your stainless one, but seasoned 'steel'.
I hot a spun steel camp oven on your recommendation Harry. Took a bit to get it fully seasoned but working well now and much lighter than the cast iron option, and weight is everything when it comes to caravanning.
The 4 in the comparison was interesting but you missed my current go to, Titanium. My experience rates it well against other 3 options, price and durability they compare to Stainless but have the advantage when cooking at low heat.
Love my hill billy pan, best thing One thing you didnt cover which i think is important especially when it comes to camp. The spun steel as you mentioned has poor heat properties, which also translates to hot spots on a pan and warping, so if you try to use a spun steel on a gas flame its performance will be greatly dependent on how large the burner is. Those poor heat properties come back as well when it comes to heat retention, if you want to retain a high heat and chuck a big steak or something in to sear, you need to be on a ripping fire!
Stainless steel is fantastic. I have them at home. Yes they are expensive but it is a one time investment. I also have a couple of cast iron fry pans too. They take a bit more work to take care of but do eggs great. Outdoors I have a Hillbilly kit which I love.
What a great Video Harry... We carry Cast iron stuff because we love a hearty camp oven meal over a big camp fire. We would def go down the road of spun "Steel" if we needed to worry about weight, but the unimog is still 2 tonne away from it's GVM. Honestly, I also thought that spun steel would be easy to damage but will give it a crack some day too.
Nice intro & info. Hope Fred enjoyed some of the prechickens. My favourite all rounder for everything including lacy potstickers 🥟 is my solidtekics lightning range skillet. The handle is designed to stay cool & also a handy utensil rest. The more you cook with them the better they get. And love their SS too.
Good video, yes you can stick your Teflon up your cork, cast iron the best,or a flat steel plate as big as a dinner plate,Weld re,o bar around the outside, plus handle homemade fry pan😊.
I’m liking the look of the Oxo outdoor spun steel pan I have a tefal ingenio pan with removable handles but it’s non stick and I keep hearing bad things about non stick!
Have been watching your vids for ages now Harry, but I feel this one def "steels" the top notch position. Really informative. Thank you. (I just worry about you stepping on hot coals sometimes...)
Love my spun steel frying pan - very careful when using on a camping gas hob because of creating a hot spot but on the fire or BBQ, lovely to cook on. At home I have a prospector pan which has become my go to roasting pan from veg to joints - just wipe down when you are done. Don't put them hot into cold water though, they will warp
Loving these videos, particularly cooking on a fire in bare feet, it must be a WA thing, it's too cold (and the fire too hot) here in Victoria. You must be a man of 'steel'. Keep up the good work.

I always would use cast iron in the bush but now have a southern metal spinners spun “steel” camp oven after following you and haven’t looked back. Thank you
I think the solidteknics could possibly rust as it has no nickel which is good for low toxicity. But usually nikel is used in stainless pans to prevent rust. I could be wrong. that being said, I love my solidteknics pans
Some great info there. And not just for camping, but also for home. I've always wondered which is best for what application. Looks like I'll be looking more closely on the spun "steel" pans for my next one.
Have been talking about spun steel for a while - you've now tipped me over the edge in getting one after seeing this. (The Southern Metal Spinners camp oven is what I'm thinking...)
Love your work, though I did get a chuckle when @0.19sec you said "not sponsored by any pan manufacturer", then first credit at the end is by a pan manufacturer. What a "steel"!
Sorry I should have said this video is not sponsored- as in I was under no obligation from anyone to make it. I didn’t pay for any of the pans in the video, they were all provided. This wasn’t about manufacturers, it was about the materials

I’m a spun steel camp oven guy in the sticks, but a cast skillet pan dude! Love how you used a steel spatular on a teflon pan! Won’t last long doing that! 🤣🤣🤣

Steel is great. Used a steel shovel for years in the bush to cook steak for lunch.

Would you still cook an acidic meal like spaghetti bol in the carbon steel pan or would you choose stainless for this?
Teflon will start to flake, when you eat it it will accumulate in your body giving you cancer.
