Steel is great. Used a steel shovel for years in the bush to cook steak for lunch.
Did you bury your poos with it too?
We used to use the hubcaps of our ford wash them up and Chuck em back on the car the heat made them all funky coulers and they looked cool
We love our Aussie made Spun ‘Steel’ pans. No chemicals, lighter and works a treat.
Just love how you used the 'steel' spatula on the Teflon pan
Great video, however as an unapologetic member of the anti teflon pan club I will every time die on the hill that there isn't a single thing you can do in a teflon pan that can't be done and done better and safer in a steel pan. Now so far as steel goes, I'd encourage folks to get Carbon Steel (close enough to spun steel to call them the same) at any turn. They provide all the same benefits as cast iron with the benefit of amazing weight savings. I am one of those chefs who would argue all day that if I could only have one pan, I would take a carbon steel pan over stainless every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Not that I hate stainless because I don't, I think they are amazing. I just find carbon steel to be a superior option in every way.
Would you still cook an acidic meal like spaghetti bol in the carbon steel pan or would you choose stainless for this?
Teflon will start to flake, when you eat it it will accumulate in your body giving you cancer.
@@jonwilson6077 For something that's a higher acid and longer cook, like a Bol, yes SS. If it's a quick lower heat coo, I've used carbon and cast iron for quick cook acidic without issue. The key is not letting anything high acid sit either on or off heat for a long time in carbon or cast.
I love my spun steel Bedourie oven and lid.
We love our stainless steel pan from Solidteknics. It goes great on the van induction stove. Previously had a high quality non-stick pan, and while it was very good, all food stuck to it!
1/ Eggs cook better in BUTTER > has a higher moisture content which helps form a barrier between pan and egg.
2/ SOLIDTEKNICS > AUS-ION™ 26cm Frypan $190 and Made in AUSTRALIA . A one piece skillet from clean Australian WROUGHT IRON that comes pre-seasoned. these things will last for generations , and made in Sydney. ... i bought the smaller 19cm because i don't have any friends 😂.
3/ Try MASTERFOODS " EVERYTHING EGGS " spice. i love it and use it fried eggs , egg and bacon pie. 👌
+1 for Everything Eggs - makes an awesome steak season as well, ive used it more on steaks than anything else.
@@b3nz0r12 cheers i'll try it out on some porterhouse !
Got the solidteknics too. Great pan.
I'm going to get myslelf an AUS-ION 26cm frypan. They look great, but I'm not convinced they are wrought IRON. I reckon they are just plain old steel. Otherwise I'd love to know where they are sourcing sheets of pure iron.
Spun" steel"is gold when camping and we happily use it at home .
I love my spun “steel” camp oven which a lid the doubles as a frypan
Another good video Harry👌
Try a Solidteknics quenched pan - I have one and find it's a great in between pan - has benefits of both a spun 'steel' pan and also a cast iron! Same same as your stainless one, but seasoned 'steel'.
I second that
I have 4 of them. Great pans
I found this informative , love the spun steel one .
Have been watching your vids for ages now Harry, but I feel this one def "steels" the top notch position. Really informative. Thank you. (I just worry about you stepping on hot coals sometimes...)
Stainless steel is fantastic. I have them at home. Yes they are expensive but it is a one time investment. I also have a couple of cast iron fry pans too. They take a bit more work to take care of but do eggs great. Outdoors I have a Hillbilly kit which I love.
I learned so much sitting by that fire watching you make this vid
Haven’t tried a spun ‘steel’ but I love my cast iron pan for cooking steaks. But the cool down time and seasoning can be a pain but worth it 👍🏽great episode Harry.
Really appreciate the platform you have created in the space of cooking on the fire….. gave me the confidence to try it out for my first time recently. Now I’m about to buy my first spun “steel” pan and will start to take my bbq a lot less with me less now on trips!
Fantastic comparison video, stainless steel every day of the week, can use my ones from home n bugger all to clean them up after camping
“Steel” a good cook 🍻 - good info thanks! 🙏
Nice intro & info. Hope Fred enjoyed some of the prechickens. My favourite all rounder for everything including lacy potstickers 🥟 is my solidtekics lightning range skillet. The handle is designed to stay cool & also a handy utensil rest. The more you cook with them the better they get. And love their SS too.
Great vid Harry, i just purchased a clad5 stainless “STEEL”12 inch scanpan with lid and so good man
Great information. For the moment ill be sticking with my stainless pot & pan set from Drifta, plus my old spun steel Bedourie. I use your water droplet test on my stainless to make sure its hot enough. Works great and cleans up easy at camp. Cheers, hope you are really enjoying for new caravan setup for the family.
Very good video Harry, you should do one on bush pots 👍
I love that u made this video, cleared up a concerns I had wen income to camp cooking, so thankyou.
' Steel '
Must have been reading my mind, am
Looking for a new campfire fry pan, saved me a lot of research. Steel . 👍🏻🇦🇺
Great video with lots of info.
We would love to “Steel” 1 of your books to take with us around Aus and learn how to cook on the fire. 🔥
Just found your channel it's a great source of information
Definitely top of the shopping list is a stainless “steel” pan! Cheers Harry !
The man of “steel” around the campfire, some great information mate thank you 👍
Liked this video before even finishing as I really want light weight pans apart from cast iron.
Thanks for sharing Harry. Such a "steel" to watch, I enjoyed it all the way to the end. I love my hill billy spun steel camp oven and pan
Cheers for the tips Harry, I might have to pull the old stainless steel pan out of retirement in the shed and give it another crack 👍🏻
Great video.......always tempted to get me at stainless STEEL pan but think I'll stick with my pyrolux cast iron.
I look forward to the egg recipe, especially cook in a spun steel pan. Another very informative video to help decide what to add to the camping kit.
Wow, these informative videos are so helpful on your channel, you just made my caravan 75% lighter because of the " STEEL ' alternatives
Feel the “Steel” baby- had my oxo for two years easy to maintain love the detachable handle
Hi Harry thank you for this video because we have been trying to weigh up between adding a stainless steel pan and a spun steel pan to our cast iron collection. This was really helpful.
Hubby and I LOVE your book here at home but now we would LOVE a signed copy to take on road with us!! ‘STEEL’
Spun STEEL is my pick. Light, easy and versatile, like me 😜
Good video, yes you can stick your Teflon up your cork, cast iron the best,or a flat steel plate as big as a dinner plate,Weld re,o bar around the outside, plus handle homemade fry pan😊.
STEEL 😊. Great video and info.
I changed my gear over to Spun “steel” after one of your videos years ago with ronny best thing I done
I like you Steel resolve on the spun steel pan
I hot a spun steel camp oven on your recommendation Harry. Took a bit to get it fully seasoned but working well now and much lighter than the cast iron option, and weight is everything when it comes to caravanning.
What a great video. Thanks for it.
I went to spun “steel” with my camp ovens and love them. Plus have a hill billy pan.
As always great content! “Steel”
Love my spun steel frying pan - very careful when using on a camping gas hob because of creating a hot spot but on the fire or BBQ, lovely to cook on. At home I have a prospector pan which has become my go to roasting pan from veg to joints - just wipe down when you are done. Don't put them hot into cold water though, they will warp
What a great Video Harry... We carry Cast iron stuff because we love a hearty camp oven meal over a big camp fire. We would def go down the road of spun "Steel" if we needed to worry about weight, but the unimog is still 2 tonne away from it's GVM. Honestly, I also thought that spun steel would be easy to damage but will give it a crack some day too.
STEEL Fantastic explanation on the variety of pans on offer. Will be looking into getting a spun steel pan.
I'm in the market for a pan. Spun STEEL is the go l think. Great vid 👌
Some great info there. And not just for camping, but also for home. I've always wondered which is best for what application. Looks like I'll be looking more closely on the spun "steel" pans for my next one.
"Steel"
Thanks for the videos. I love my spun steel camp oven, my Japanese cast camp oven, and my hillbilly steel pans with folding handles.
I’d love to try a Spun STEEL pan for our big trip, cheers from The Top End! ❤
I haven’t tried a spun ‘steel’ pan before but now I might.
Thanks for this video. Enjoyed your comments. We all seem to have our favorites for home or camping. Love the steel pans.
Bought my spun steel frying pan and wok from Hillybillys last week, can’t wait to give them a spin 😉
I wish I knew where this camping spot was.. looks perfect
Steel ❤
Thanks for the video. I rarely use cast iron as have never really known how to use them so Thanks for teaching me something new :)
Great video .. I am stuck between Spun STEEL and cast iron. But you have got me thinking!!
We use non stick pans on the induction, but spin steel for the fire.
Great video as always. The spun STEEl pan is the way to go I thing but also own all of them. Keep them coming
I love to steel your ideas, in order to learn and make my camping easier !! 🙂
Love the video Harry “Steel” 🔥 thank you 🙏
You had me at onlypans 😂
Takes a bit to get the cast iron seasoned properly but once it's seasoned properly it's truly non stick.
I’m liking the look of the Oxo outdoor spun steel pan
I have a tefal ingenio pan with removable handles but it’s non stick and I keep hearing bad things about non stick!
Well done Harry I think most of us like the spun still for the bush cooking 🍳
Did not know about spun steel, thanks
Gotta love a good spun “steel” pan.
The 4 in the comparison was interesting but you missed my current go to, Titanium. My experience rates it well against other 3 options, price and durability they compare to Stainless but have the advantage when cooking at low heat.
Hi Harry, did you just "STEEL" my favourite frypan? Greetings from Perth, West Australia. Enjoying all your vids. Cheers, Frank.
Great segment, I am a cast iron boy but I am now looking at spun steel. Thanks for the info
Look at solidteknics. It's basically the two (wrought iron).
Love the video mate. Do the same for induction or gas pls
researching the pans i need for the caravan and tourer so the spun steel is coming first ,but the cast iron
I use a spun steel pan all the time when camping and love it.
I always would use cast iron in the bush but now have a southern metal spinners spun “steel” camp oven after following you and haven’t looked back. Thank you
My son bought a spun steel camp oven after watching you.
Best choice.
8:39 Aussie slang lesson: "cooked" in this context means ruined. Synonyms include; stuffed, rooted, F#$&ed, Munted.
Great info Thankyou. Steel
Have been talking about spun steel for a while - you've now tipped me over the edge in getting one after seeing this. (The Southern Metal Spinners camp oven is what I'm thinking...)
I love the Hillbilly camp oven made of spun steel. And yes the lid is a great frying pan, just needs a handle! Thanks for doing this, I really need a quality pan for home so will look at some stainless pans. BUT, is it really necessary to use that much oil?
You "steel" my heart with that eat cooking
Steel like your feet lol, love spun for weight but love using cast at home easy to look after. Keep up being yourself and putting out the great content
after seeing your videos im looking into buying a few Spun "Steel" pans and camp oven
I’m a spun steel camp oven guy in the sticks, but a cast skillet pan dude! Love how you used a steel spatular on a teflon pan! Won’t last long doing that! 🤣🤣🤣
Steel. Love the video
Absolutely love my SOLIDTEKNICS STEEL FRY PANS.
I have cast as well and no competition
The man of steel
Steel. New to you and your adventures and loving them!!
Love my hill billy pan, best thing
One thing you didnt cover which i think is important especially when it comes to camp.
The spun steel as you mentioned has poor heat properties, which also translates to hot spots on a pan and warping, so if you try to use a spun steel on a gas flame its performance will be greatly dependent on how large the burner is. Those poor heat properties come back as well when it comes to heat retention, if you want to retain a high heat and chuck a big steak or something in to sear, you need to be on a ripping fire!
I have a couple of 'spun iron' pans from the Netherton foundry and love um!
Hot Wok, Cold Oil, No Stick. I enjoy your videos. Skillet
Good, informative piece Harry, thanks.
Very usefull info, cast iron still my favourite.
I bought it so cheap it was a STEEL. 😁
Love my carbon steel pans, use ot out bush and at home,
Definitely considering spun steel now.
I have a Hillbilly spun STEEL skillet that lives in my tuckerbox in my ute. Very much happy with it. 👍🐕🤠
Love the spun steel pans. BTW I already purchased your book!
Steel! Will be good to see an egg episode!
Spun STEEL is the winner 🥇
Thanks so much for this extremely helpful review!
We have the Stainless “STEEL” pan as well as SolidTeknics 👍🍻
Thanks for giving us the good oil on STEEL pans
Love your work, though I did get a chuckle when @0.19sec you said "not sponsored by any pan manufacturer", then first credit at the end is by a pan manufacturer. What a "steel"!
Sorry I should have said this video is not sponsored- as in I was under no obligation from anyone to make it. I didn’t pay for any of the pans in the video, they were all provided. This wasn’t about manufacturers, it was about the materials
