Random question. And sorry if you already did this talk. I recall our mechanic dudes offering a crank. Or a counter balanced crank. I remember not knowing anything about vehicles and I think I still knew to get a counter balanced. But what are your thoughts/discoveries from past tear downs and counter balanced cranks? Don’t laugh at my question I’m not a car guy.
yea that was a stock VW crankshaft. The counterweighted are much better. They used them in premium engines like Porsche. Porsche 912 was similar to VW except the crankshaft was counterweighted and was 74 stroke. That is why I like to do the 74 counterweighted. because they were better. More expensive car with better engineering. totally can tell a counterweighted engine when I get in one. they are much smoother feeling and sounding. Run better, last longer and all around better engineering.
@@Mikefngarage That’s my point. I get confused why they even made a non-counterbalanced crank. And I’m a roofer. Lol. Well I actually do massive solar projects now.
probably the heat still. make sure your cooling is squared away (fan, air ducts / tubes) and double check that new oil cooler. also, try not driving 80mph too often. i usually avoid bringing my '73 super beetle (1600 single port) above 60 for extended periods of time- reserve those high speeds for overtakes and emergencies.
That’s a VW Mexico exhaust system or a reproduction. I had one in my car and replaced for a Vintage Speed. Fixing up the hacked up motors is a never ending job, isn’t it? 🤣😂
Engine has gone through many heat cycles then line bored. It probably doesn't need it again unless belt broke and Engine overheated and or bearing clearance became too sloppy 💁♂️
Dang...that's nasty !! Glad it's a good engine though, can't wait for the build video !!
Its fun doin teardowns. Last one i did was a 200 ford six. Very easy
Awesome video guys .. my heart skipped a few beats when you brought up the engine scope !! I still remember how to hook one up 😮. Oh the 80’s
Thanks for doing these videos. Nice to watch..
Hey Mike ! the shade tree way to check the line bore is take the #1 full circle main and pop it in to the #2 and #3 and see if you can lift the case ?
I had a efi case, it didn't come with a fuel pump hole. The shroud also had a velocity ring in the back..
Good times 🎉 change your oil folks
Awesome video guy's thanks.
Actually, that isn't a fuel injection case. Those were only AJ. That sensor is just for the early dealer diagnostic system
Im available Sundays & Mondays.... its a Win Win situation here Mike... 😉

@@mischafellner8943All to make them economical transportation. Porsche was the high end version of the VW design.
@@mischafellner8943 totally a cost thing
Mike what crack the heads //my 1970 had crack heads //I replaced them 2 times and new oil cooler //I run my 1970 V W Beetle at 80 M.P.H.

Is your engine mount home made? Why mount from the other side of the engine?
I just put it on wrong. but we pulled it down when it was a short block then flipped it on the other side.
yea its made with thicker steel. the other ones would never have lasted through over 1000 engines.
Mike, I sent you a PM.
Can I buy the valve covers?
