Pps: an idea for the space where the strawberries currently are: would be an amazing space dedicated to your sons playtime. When he’s older he’ll love kicking around a soccer ball there or playing catch, you could even put a swing set there or a mini playground, or build a play house for him or even a tree house of sorts. Since it’s enclosed it will be nice and safe and so close to the house, you won’t regret it!

Sprouting garlic is just fine -- leave it alone for the autumn/winter and it will carry on growing in the spring. Not to worry -- don't touch it except to mulch.

Yes, I live in No. California where it’s been in the 40’s at night for awhile. My garlic usually sprouts up about 10 days after planting. It’s covered over with a layer of straw. And will continue to grow for a bit.

Becky - if you let the zucchini get huge at the end of the growing season, you do not have to refrigerate them. They keep very well in the basement with your potatoes and onions. The skin gets very hard and they save like a winter squash! That way you can cut them open and give them to the chickens well into the winter months

Becky, I understand you are putting your beds to bed, but another option would be to plant some green manure crops (mustard greens, winter salads, etc). They will enrich your beds (by both nourishing the soil as they grow and by forking them in come early spring) and you will get fresh food for your chickens too!
For your garlic beds, spread a thick layer of straw or much and they should be fine.

Before you set your girls up in the woods make sure you know what the predators are in your area-it gives them cover and we all know that EVERYTHING loves a chicken dinner. One way I made it more appealing for my girls to come out and forage once it had snowed (NE Ohio) was to keep bags of fall leaves and regularly add a new layer for them to walk on. Long term benefit was a fabulous no work compost pile that has benefitted us for several years. If our fall is warmer than usual my garlic will sprout but the frost knocks it back only to pop back up in the spring.

This is my second year with my garlic - it sprouts (this way I know it is going to live and it is getting itself established) and then the winter frost, freeze, snow and ice can come all they want because the garlic will go dormant and when spring comes they will wake up and continue growing....you will be fine.

Hi Becky! Last year, my garlic sprouted and grew about 2 inches, even having put an inch of straw on it when it was planted. The sprouts turned a little brown when it got really cold, but come spring, they greened back up and grew. It was an awesome harvest as well; great big heads. I was so glad.😊

Becky, You might consider one of your raised beds dedicated to strawberries. The greenstalk gets replanted and you have mentioned how good those berries are. I know they will expand and take over, so keeping them confined to one bed will preserve these wonderful fruit for years and keep them contained. You can even set up some netting to protect them from raiding wildlife. The previous owner had a kitchen herb garden near the patio. It could be very decorative as a little planting with a bird bath in the center too!

I forgot I wanted to thank you for showing your chickens enjoying their treats. Please continue showing this for us city folks who wish they can have chickens. My grandparents had a farm when I was young and when we went out there to visit my grandma always sent me to get the eggs and sometimes feed and shut them in for the night. I loved it, it made me feel like such a big girl, i missed things when they had to move out when they got too old. At various times friends and relatives that lived in the country and had chickensand they seemed very glad to allow me to go out to their coop and collect eggs. Also i remember when I was young and didn't realize my grandparents livelihood was the farm, I got excited when my parents came back after dropping us off in summer, my grand mother would have to go out and catch and kill a chicken or w to feed everybody. She let me 1st watch her deal with this function and as I grew older got me to kill, gut (properly) pluck and then clean the chicken so it was ready to cook. The 1st time I saw or did the procedure from beginning to end, cooled my appetite for eating it until it sat on the table smelling wonderful and everyone looking forward to the wonderful smells. I know a fellow youtube creator Jamerrill, has chickens which are pets she uses for eggs but been hatching and raising another large batch of chickens which she slaughters and fills her freezer every year to use to feed her large family.

When it comes to your chickens there are so many fruits, vegetables and flowers that are beneficial for the chickens and easy to grow. You can also freeze dry and rehydrate them if you want to. That flat area could be perfect for your sons play area. Swing set, sandbox, Tonka Trucks, ball games etc. He's not going to be little for very long and will probably want to play outside.

I really respect their decision to keep the child away from the camera and I can understand why. You could put the scraps in the raised beds for them to enjoy and it would work double time...a place for them to scratch/eat and a compositing area. It's already fenced and wouldn't take much to get it going as a chicken run. Just an idea! Thanks for sharing your wonderful gardens, chickens and plans with us! Hugs.

Also, my aunt grows spinach, lettuce, and kale in her basement with grow lights. That might be an option if you want to continue to supplement your "girls' " diet over winter.

We do let our chickens into our garden beds from late fall til early spring. We built a garden bed just for our chickens. It's just a in ground bed we amended with compost and planted beans, lettuce, mustard greens, kale and a few cherry tomatoes. The chickens can reach there heads in through the wire fence and eat what they want. We also grow Jerusalem Artichokes and the girls love jumping to eat the leaves as well as dig up some of the tubers to eat. Another plant we planted this year is Amaranth. We picked all the massive seed heads and have them drying indoors and some of the grain will go to the chickens.

In my experience, Silver Dollar Eucalyptus grows as a tree. You can still cut the fronds off to use in flower arrangements and still come back lush. They will start to hang down almost like a weeping willow tree. Very pretty. Smell great. They don't grow as tall as regular eucalyptus trees, but def a tree. I would plant at the edges of your property as the roots are quite invasive as far as septic systems, etc. And the roots will take over your garden bed if left in the beds as they are now.

Usually chicken, wild turkey, or venison with carrots (including the greens) pumpkin, greens, turmeric, ginger, tomato, apple, eggs and olive oil, avocado oil or mct oil. I blitz it all up in my food processor and mix it in a 40 quart stock pot then fill it into 8oz containers that get frozen for her. Freezing it makes her slow down while eating and she seems to enjoy the challenge.

  • @joniwasson2866

Hi Becky, two things, on the garlic, you need to do a cover of thick straw and a good mulch. It is not dormant and is starting to grow too early. That will help keep it growing slower, and you will also see a better harvest. The other thing is that we did grow food just for the chickens. If you allow your zuchinni to grow big, it actually hardens the peel, and it will store and last all winter long. You can do this with cucumbers, other squash, and pumpkins. We would store them in a cool, dry place and cut some up to give to the chickens. We would also save the tops of our root veggies and allow them to sun dry and then also add that to their feed. They always seem to enjoy it. And during really hot days, my Gramma would take frozen fruit like apples, pears, or plums and sometimes corn and freeze them and feed her chickens. I grow as much food, if not more for my chickens as I do for my husband and I. I have an herb garden that goes all the way around the chicken run so that I can put herbs in their coops and the nesting boxes. I do grow pumpkins exclusively for the chickens. I give them usually a pumpkin every other day. I also give my chickens apples and a lot of garden scraps

Yesterday was our first freeze in Fredericksburg Virginia and I'm clearing out my tiny garden preparing for much larger one next year. This was my first year gardening on my new land and we could only afford to grow one variety of tomato, pepper, cucumber, pumpkin and as a fall garden grow carrots and lettuce but I was just able to place 2 seed orders with recommendations from you and I'm beyond excited. Migardener and baker creek seeds. 2024 I will be growing 4+ tomato varieties, 5 varieties of peppers, (sugar rush peach pepper being one im beyond excited for to make hot sauce)3 variety of pumpkins but also cabbage, zucchini, green beans and a few other things but I'm beyond excited to see what all I have room/money for. Good soil/ natural fertilizer is my own money problem thank goodness instead of variety of seeds. We have been very lucky to have been blessed with pallets to tear apart and make beautiful rustic looking raised beds with but little by little were getting there. I love watching your videos and learning from you! You have helped me come across many other amazing people/company's and thank you for that! You make choosing seed varietys and among many other things alot less stressful.

Elderberries spread, so keep that in mind. I have used them around my chicken yard because the chickens like them too. I have actually seen mama chickens jump up and grab green elderberries and feed them to chicks. It can offer shade to chickens too. I know you don’t have your permanent chicken area yet but it is something to keep in mind.

I just finished my notes on my 2023 garden this morning. What worked, what didn't, what I need to do different next year, etc. The garden has frozen and been cleared off. I need to add compost and leaves before the snow flies. I'm always grateful for this time of year. The garden is done. Food preservation is almost finished. And we are almost ready for the winter. I have learned so much from you the last couple of years, my gardening skills have definitely improved.I hope that you get some well deserved rest!!

Here in the South I don’t plant my Garlic 🧄 until the end of November. I keep the bulbs in the fridge for a minimum of 8 weeks prior to planting them to manually force Vernalization because down here in the South it does not get cold enough for long enough.
My comment is really just advice for any new gardeners here in the south struggling with growing garlic 🍻

It's been so much fun watching how your garden has done this year. You have done an amazing job!
Don't worry about the garlic sprouting early. I have grown it for 15 years in Utah zone 6/7, and it sprouts every year and has experienced temperatures below 0° with no issues. A little mulch will help insulate them, but other than that, you don't need to worry about them! I am excited to see your garden next year.

Hi Becky! My chickens love freeze dried strawberries and greens. I give them the strawberries as an occasional treat but I do rehydrate them a little to make it easier for them to digest. The greens are an excellent way to get them greens over winter! No need to dehydrate them, I just mix them in with their fewd and they love it!

For your overwintering peppers - put them in your grow room, by a window without a grow light. Good natural daylight should be enough. Water them regularly. Did you give them fresh soil? Because they may need some nutrients to get them through dormancy.

Great video Becky! I love your ideas with grapes and fruit trees. That will look amazing. I would definitely protect them because deer will destroy them in an evening if they aren’t protected. They got into my garden for the first time this year and we’ve been gardening here for 10 years. They ate my strawberries down to nothing, ate almost an entire grape vine, cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli in one evening. Let me tell you I wanted some venison in the freezer. I was devastated because I worked so hard getting it ready for this years garden season. Needless to say I got a garden harvest just no brassicas. 2024 will be better.

For beginner gardeners I found Insecticidal soap and water works wonders to get of aphids, lacebugs, mealybugs, mites, leaf hoppers, scale insects, spider mites, thrips and whiteflies. It will kill soft-bodied lacebug nymphs (an immature life stage) but it won't damage their hard eggs. I spray both top and bottom of the leaves 3 days in a row and have no problems later. It may be didn't in your area so just keep an eye if they come back.

I was a little concerned when you said you were going to let your chicken fence go down the hill. When we had a dog lot going down the hill, the dog would be able to get out easier and other animals could get in the lot easier.
I want to get chickens but we have so many animals that would love them. I would have to put something on the top of the area.

I offer to take leftover pumpkins from neighbors (post on next door or fb) and I ended up with over 50 last year. Kept in my garage and my girls got a pumpkin or two per week all the way through April. I used to try growing my own winter squash to save for them, but it's so much easier to just take pumpkins others buy as decorations.

I shredd my zucchini and put it in the freezer. Then if we get cold 🥶 I add to warm oats or scrambled eggs. They ❤❤❤it. I will just unthaw and toss to them if it not cold. Gives them a healthy snack to scratch for. It’s a win win. 🎉

I missed a few carrots in my 2022 garden, and when I was getting my beds ready for 2023, I found them, cleaned them, and tried a bit, and while they were a little soft, they were still completely edible. I live in Michigan in zone 6a, so your carrots will probably overwinter just fine.

Good morning Becky, I did some research on over wintering pepper plants, keep them in a sunny window and allow the soil's top layer to dry out between watering. Also, I watched your previous episode when you pulled the pepper plants and potted them, watch out for any bugs that may have stayed in the root ball. You are such an inspiration to many.
