In 1936 my granddad bought 2 parcels in the middle of orange groves in Pasadena, Calif. He built 1 Sears kit home for he & my grandma. In 1951 he & my uncles built a second home next door for my parents while my dad was fighting in the Korean war. By the time he got home his new home was ready to move into with his new wife. More importantly they look amazing.

All I can say is...... WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!!!! It is stunning! They could do that then and now the outrageous costs for a bunch of square boxes?!?!?! We've been ripped off for decades. Thank you for showing this!!
About 40 years ago, I lived in a Sears and Roebuck house in Rochester NY. It had bay windows in the living and dining room, the ice delivery box was still there near the side door, And if I'm remembering correctly, it still had a claw foot bathtub. And there was another house just like it a few doors down the street! Full of character.
Sears home kits were amazing and built to last as this one proves to us. The issue is with any home structure up keep is mandatory to keep the house in the best shape. Good video and thanks for sharing with us. This was a beautiful home at one time and still is!
This home was bought from a Sears and Roebuck catalog. It's lasted almost 100 yrs. Why can't builders today build home like this? These so called contractors build temporary homes that last 15 yrs at the most then need major repairs. This is exactly why I won't buy homes today. They're built like crap using substandard homes we're supposed to pay huge amounts of money for. Then have to pay taxes on said property the rest of your life for it. No thanks, that's not a good way to spend your money. You can't even leave these homes to your kids because they won't last. They aren't generational homes. It's just sad.
I inherited my Great Aunt/Uncle's home, it was a Sears home, blt 1940, at the total cost of $4,000. I adored that house, sadly a tornado in 2019 took, almost, the entire neighborhood. Completely leveled my home as well as my surrounding neighbors, we all lost everything. Most tragically, a 14 yr old boy from the adjoining neighborhood, as well. That was terrible day.
Years ago I devoured a book called Letters from Honeyhill, which was the experiences of a homestead couple in Wyoming shortly after The Great War. They were beekeepers who started out living in a shack but prospered enough after many years to buy one of these Sears and Roebuck houses. There were pictures of it and it was so sturdy and handsome, very much like this one shown. Sadly, like so many others, the couple suffered acute financial hardship when the Great Depression rolled around.
I very recently read a novel about a Sears kit home, it was the first time I had ever heard of them. This video makes me think I have probably seen a few growing up and had no idea.
What a lovely place. And to think it was personally designed from a catalog. How cool is that? We live in Alabama. I miss Sears department stores. We had a washer & dryer sears kenmore that lasted for many years. Living in Alabama there are a lot of old stores miss. Top dollar, freds, zayre, Kmart, millers and mcclellan's. Thanks for posting. I so enjoyed it.
Back then, almost everything Sears made was top quality that lasted a very long time. Most of our tools, lawn equipment is Sears. Major appliances were built for durability. My parent's Kenmore Dryer lasted 50 years (some minor parts replacement) and their Coldspot Refrig/Freezer also lasted 50 years. I sure miss them.😞
Incredibly beautiful and sad to see its neglected condition. I’m also sad to see Sears go under. Hopefully someone with a vision and business sense can salvage it.
