Such a cool project, nice work! That tip on the locating pin is super handy. I think you need to share your shop music playlist, something tells me it would be pretty awesome.
Thanks! I’m excited to use that locator pin trick for other projects. 🤘🤘
3 string guitar
Such a cool project! Felt like a 5 minute video even though it's almost 20. And I really liked the "locator pin" trick at the drill press! Never seen that before, definitely keeping it in my pocket.
Awesome! I was worried about it feeling too rushed since there was so much information. I’m kinda happy about that trick too! Excited to use it for some other stuff
I've seen quite a lot of project where people built not just the neck but also the body all by themselves. I think out of all of them the sound of this thing really stands out. I was actually blown away by the first strum.
I was so amazed by how it sounded too. It's so fun to play.
First time I see a woman doing these kind of videos. Kudos! Keep it up, we need the representativity
💪💪💪
@@3x3CustomTamar loved the video! Subscribed!
Nádia Paiva awesome! Thanks!
This was amazing - I almost, almost, skipped it because I don't play an instrument. Seeing the shape and the lovely spalted front , thought why not watch - glad I did. Woodworker AND guitarist: multi talented. I hope your kids appreciate this !
Thanks so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed! I think my kids think all moms make their kids instruments. 😂😂
OK, I am impressed. and you play guitar to boot? Amazing! It sounds awesome. I love watching your videos! Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much! I know a few songs ☺️
Tamar, I love your honesty about what you would have done differently! Not only are you a great artisan but a wonderful teacher as well. I know, I used to teach college. Kudos!!!
Awesome to hear! Thanks!
Tamar's Guitars man, if that don't sing and zing, then I don't know what does! lol
Cool project, Tamar! I usually skip instrument builds but I had to watch this one because I was interested what a 3 stringer would sound like. Thanks for the video -- definitely a cool build!!
Hahah! I like the way that sounds too! Thanks so much!
I’ve been building guitars out of cigar boxes for years but I have never seen such an instructive video on how to make the neck from scratch. Thank you for putting this together. I’ve learned quite a bit. 👏👏👏
Glad you liked it!
Tamar , that's a good looking guitar and loved your strumming 😊very nicely done 👌
Thanks so much!!
That's a mighty fine first attempt. Praise all around for the instrument, oration and the videography. UA-cam suggests I watch your Explorer video next. I can't wait to see you take what you learned here to your next project. 👍
Hope you liked the explorer!
Great job - love the shape. Thanks Tamara!
Thanks so much!
Okay, I really have to say that doing the thing with the locator bit for drilling the string holes all the way through like that is a stroke of genius. Seriously. I have seen a lot of tips and tricks in my life, but that is truly a new one. You need to send that in to one of the woodworking magazines to see if you can win their bi-monthly prize. HUZZAH!
Hahaha! I definitely saw that trick somewhere and stored it in the back of my brain somewhere. I wish I couldn’t take credit for it!
"I've only had it for a day, so don't judge."
Proceeds to shred.
Hahaha 🤘🤘
Seriously “don’t judge” and she plays wish you were here lol 😂 I can’t even play it on a six string lol I really enjoy your videos thank you
You did a great job. I really don't understand the negative comments about how you built it. You made it from materials you had available and did a really good job. You designed the project, solved problems, made process decisions, and created a one-of-a-kind three string guitar that looks really good and sounds as good as it looks. I don't get the sniping about HOW you made it, like there are style points for build / process decisions. It's the end result that counts and you hit it out of the park. Congratulations to you!
Thanks! I understand that it’s not the “right” way to make it. But it was all just an experiment and a learning process. I wasn’t teaching how to make it... whatever. I still enjoy playing it. Ha!
5 stars for determination and experimentation. I'll end the comment there!
Ha. Thanks.
Gorgeous guitar, I was gobsmacked by how loud it was unplugged... and the tone was as surprising... the floating bridge was very classy, it sounded perfectly intonated... whilst perfect as is, a tortoiseshell pickguard would really finish this off... a mini jazzbox, I love it...
Thanks so much! I was also super surprised at how loud it was! It’s actually the perfect volume for my kids to play without it making my ears bleed. Ha
Oh yeah, you're hooked. Another one drawn toward the homemade instrument obsessio... I mean hobby. Welcome - we have cookies.
Excellent build! If you hit a couple of local cigar shops and ask them about empty cigar boxes, most of them have a stack or two for sale for a couple of dollars. I think the most I've ever paid for a box has been like $4. Can't wait to see what you come up with next! Keep on pluckin'!
Thanks so much mark! I totally get why this is an obsession! Can’t wait to try those cookies 😉
Screening the hole is a phenomenal idea. No more shaking picks out!
Yeah! I feel like that was he best thing I did on this. Ha. It’s crazy what I’ve found in my regular acoustics....
Omg that's the coolest. Many cigar shops keep empty boxes on hand and sell them for a few bucks a piece or if you're lucky might even just give you a couple. A lot of them have some really great art. Old license plates also make great box tops for a different look/sound. Keep up the great work, I really enjoy your videos.
You found it! Ha. Thanks!
@@3x3CustomTamar yes I did! It was such a cool build, I love the shape of the box. Thank you.
Is the shape based on the St. Vincent guitar? Very cool indeed!
You got it! 🤘🤘🤘
I feel so dumb now! I couldn't figure out why it looked familiar! XD
With the top corner cut off.. but yeah St Vincent for sure..
Just found this video. I have been making CBGs for 10 years. What a nice job you did and a super cooool lookin guitar!!! I like the pin locater idea. Thanks for this video!!
"A Lego stopper" - brilliant!
Game changer. Ha
I bet Gibson filed the patent the day after this video was posted.
You did a Wonderfull job Sweetheart. “YOU” built it and it is beautiful. It sounds great as well. I very much enjoy the tone and the resonance. It really sustains superbly. You should be very proud of your instrument. I think it is one of the best DIY project videos I’ve seen. God Bless. Sincerely, Pops Fitch
Post Script: looks like you have a full and blessed life going on there, enjoy and give thanks.
came for the guitars, stayed cause your channel is awesome! subbed!
and a gorgeous lil' guitar it is too ;)
a+
This was def a fun one to make. Thanks!
Super cool guitar! Somehow I could tell as soon as you started this build you had been watching del’s cbg videos!! Welcome to the cbg world! Nothing like a good ol handmade instrument!
He is super cool. Ha! I totally get how this is addicting.
It’s very addicting!! Plus there’s endless possibilities of what can be created!!
Great job. all you need is $10;000+ worth of power tools
Thanks! If these tools cost me $10k my husband would have killed me.
@@3x3CustomTamar Maybe not $10k, but decent quality power tools cost a fair bit and you must have at least $1,000 worth there. That belt sander alone is a costly looking item.
I also envy you Americans your access to space. Here in the UK land is pricey and I end up basically having to stack tools on top of each other - it makes maintaining accuracy a bit difficult. Wood is also much more expensive over here so I have to recycle/upcycle scrap wood. Overall, an interesting effort but I'd probably have gone the fabrication route, rather than the router route for the body build.
Grey Wolf yeah. I guess I take that stuff for granted. I totally agree with you on the construction of the body. Next time I’m going to cut out thin strips of plywood to the shape I want. Then glue those up together to make the walls taller
Well, the thing is a lot of these channels cater more towards professional woodworkers, not weekend woodworkers. The same thing can be done with hand tools, and we're for decades before any of the modern tools available today.
It was a nice build...I would change a few things tho. Definitely nee to figure out a way to access electronics/jack. With the top glued on, your kinda screwed if you need to rep.ace the pickup, etc
My wife and I absolutely love your videos. We have a small shop and always learn something from your videos.
If you want cigar boxes to make another guitar message me, we keep them in stock and can for sure hook you up.
Awesome! Thanks!
"lego stopper" :D Great!
Haha! Only ppl with kids would get that!
The body shape is so cool! And I like the black back with the natural elements
Thanks! It was so fun to make
Wow, a pretty lady who builds guitars. I'm in love!
Yeah, so what? Por male...

Nice work!!! A fret level and polish takes FOREVER!!! Turned out great!!!
Thanks! Not fun work at all.... ha
Don’t judge! You’re joking right? Freak’n amazing! You’re awesome!
Haha! I’m not too confident in my guitar playing. ☺️ thanks so much
I don't know why but I find your voice very soothing. Nice videos and love your enthusiasm.
So awesome to hear! Thanks!
Anyone who tests a guitar by playing CCR is a friend of mine
🤘🤘🤘
I just realized I said CCR and meant Skynyrd. Oh well 🤷♂️
Vincent Ferrari I actually thought you were referring to deep purple! Ha! It happens!
And a little touch of Pink Floyd in there as well.
And a bullfrog. Oh, sorry. I thought you were referring to Three Dog Night. ;-)
The shape of the body is super nice and you did a great job building this awesome guitar. Thank you for sharing this project and greetings from Germany
Glad you liked it!
No!!!! The tuning pegs are perfect. people would expect them to be alternating. This way it has style!
Don't judge? Tamar, you did a beautiful job. I only used guitar kits so far. Now , you have inspired me to make the real deal. Excellent video and process. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome. This was such a fun build. I want to make more!
Using spalted wood for the top wasn't a good decision. It won't last nearly as long.
Of course that true of the way the body was done as well so i guess it didn't matter at that point
I used a stabilizing epoxy on the top. So we’re good there. This was just an experiment. I Had fun with it. And my kids enjoy it. That’s all that matters to me.
"It won't last nearly as long..." As what? Steel, aluminum, PVC plastic? She stabilized the wood with a penetrating epoxy resin. It's probably good for at least 100 years at this point - you think it needs to last longer?
I can't read all the comments to see if anyone made this suggestion. I was thinking it might have been a lot easier to make the body by resawing the back off the blank then shaping the outside of the body. Next you would band saw out the interior of the body. Shape the back the same way you shaped the front and glue it to the body.
This being similar to the way you make bandsaw boxes. Plus you ghave a sizable chunk of wood leftover from the cutout interior.
Great video. Well done.
Yeah. That’s the way I’ll prob do it next time. I just had to see this idea through to fruition
3 string telecaster))
Great job. I've building guitars for over 30 years, but I learned a few things from this video. Thanks for posting.
Awesome to hear! 🤘
You know you could just find cigar boxes on eBay, or at just about any antique store out their for like 5 bucks, not that your design isn't cooler, but if you want the vintage look...
One of the best guitar build videos I've watched cigar box or not. Awesome build!!! You can do a fret job any time you think it needs it but I think it sounds great. You started your demo with my favorite .
Thanks so much! This was my favorite build for sure. I want to make more!
Cringed the whole video, but i cannot argue with results like that.
Yeah. Def not the correct way. But not bad for my first attempt. It was so fun to do
Definitely not consistent with traditional guitar builds, but after watching this I watched a few other cigar box builds and I have to say this is hands above those. Acoustic guitars want to have a lot of resonance, which generally means thinner back, sides and top. I was shaking my head through the whole build, but then have to admit it sounded surprisingly awesome in the end.
That spalted top was beautiful!
Also, I've never used those disc piezos before. When I saw all that hot glue I thought, "that's never going to work". It defies nearly every principle of piezos I am familiar with, but it sounded great.
So all that constructive criticism I was saving up??? Nevermind. You built a beautiful instrument and it sounded great.
Thanks for sharing.
Why would you cringe for the whole video? She did a great job with the guitar and it came out fine. Do you get some kind of style points for HOW the project is made? You might not use the same wood working techniques - but, YOUR techniques are necessarily either better or correct - they're simply different. I probably would not have built it the same way, but I learned a couple of alternative methods watching the video and may try incorporating them into my work. I truly don't get the comment.
QuinnMendel it’s different from a traditional guitar bc it’s not a traditional guitar! It’s a whole nother animal! But it gave me the confidence to think that I can actually build a real acoustic guitar. When I get a drum sander of course.... 😂😂
@@3x3CustomTamar Yep - I get that. Honestly, I've never built a cigarbox guitar or looked into their typical construction. So I watched your video first and formed some opinions, but then (thankfully) had the presence of mind to watch a few other cigarbox builds which reset my expectations and gave me a renewed appreciation for what you accomplished.
Frankly, my biggest concern with your approach is with all that end grain. I really, really hope it holds up, but my history with such matters is that it will want to warp and split. Hopefully the wood hardener will save you...
BTW, your neck-through design was brilliant!
Yes! That Locator Pin trick is brilliant, and would work even if your drill press doesn't have lasers.
The laser on my drill press is useless. Ha. I saw that truck somewhere else. Not sure where
I'm a custom guitar builder so I know there is a lot that goes into building even a simple guitar, you did an excellent job it actually sounds and looks great. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much! I totally want to build more guitars. I’m waiting till I get a drum sander to attempt a real acoustic. But I’m already planning it all
I love it! It's very unique! It's so punk! Just 3 strings! Minimalist design as well!
Thanks so much! It was so fun to create. Totally want to make more!
Not sure if I’m more impressed with your guitar making skills or your guitar playing skills...both pretty awesome!
☺️☺️☺️ thanks! I wish I had more time to practice guitar.
That's awesome, and you really do play very well. In 20 years, I have never thought about or seen the tip about pinning the underside of the drill press. I could have used that tip a million times by now. Game changer for me, thanks.
Awesome! I’m glad something from the video was helpful!
So many chips...but it was worth it!
Your Cigar Box Guitar is a model "De Luxe",beautiful and sound really good! I am blown away by your work!
Thanks so much! I managed to save a lot of the chips and I use them as fire starters. So not such a waste
Just wow. There are so many things technically wrong with this build, but I absolutely love it! You took what you had and what you knew and you created a piece of art that is both unique and functional. The look on your face holding it is priceless keep building stuff and filming it. I’m watching
Haha! Thanks! It was so fun. I want to make another one!
It is basically a Cigar Box Guitar, and with those builds, there is a rule of thumb, and that rule is "there are no rules"
Wow, you made AND played that. So very talented.
Thanks! This was a fun one.
I love the natural distortion tones it has unplugged. Awesome job!
Thanks so much! It’s so fun to play
Вот уж удивила так удивила! Все красиво! И то откуда руки растут и сами руки и что эти руки сделали! Супер! Женщина-мечта😀
Oh my God!!!, you are soooooo talented... I love your confidence and tenacity, you are my inspiration. 😊
Thanks!! ☺️☺️☺️
To help with the fretboard glue up, I like to drill a hole right in the middle of 2 of the fret slots (top and bottom of fretboard) and then use a toothpick as locator pins, that way everything stays inplace while clamping and the toothpick is then hidden under the fret.
That’s a great tip. Thanks
Power to you mate! Super cool build. I am so impressed. Well done!
I am contemplating building one of these myself. I have a bit of experience in assembling guitars from prefabricated parts. However I have never attempted building one from scratch. I have been collecting random pieces of timber and I think I have enough to make a project like this work.
You have really inspired me.
It's always cool to see a nice lady woodworking, even cooler to see a lady playing guitar.
🤘
Sheesh, I said it about your bowl without a lathe video, but it is the same here. You are a master of making it work regardless of tools. Really inspiring to watch you figure everything out!
Thanks so much Shaun! I really appreciate that! It’s fun to figure all this stuff out
gutsy lady totally enjoyed this experience well done!
Everyone agrees very good guitar build. Bottom line sounds great. Thank you.
I've been building these for about 5 yrs now and I gotta say you did a fantastic job!!, my kinda girl!! Likes to get saw dust in her hair!! Lol! keep up the awesome videos!!
Haha thanks so much! They are so fun to make. I want to make more!
Awesome build! Indeed there's some scary bits with the thin walls, but you nailed it. When you first sturmmed it, I was like, "Oh Yeah!". Then you started into some Floyd and I was happier. Great job.
Thanks so much! So fun to make!!
A musician and a craftswoman. Very interesting.

Great inspiration, thank you!
Imagine how I felt in that moment. Ha! Thanks!!!
That's a fantastic piece of work, Tamar. Well done! Sounds great unamplified too. Just brilliant!
Thanks so much! I have been playing it only acoustic and I’m loving it.
Wow, 5 years ago. Quite an enjoyable journey. Another wood hardner is a 50/50 mix of paint thinner and varnish. If you have continued making instruments, I hope you now have fret files and other luthier tools? Thanks for sharing!
I have gotten some more tools since this video!
I loved the LEGO stopper part membrane! Very good idea not only for LEGO but also for guitar picks, little screws and whatever can get in there. I've ones lost a lighter in my guitar...
Ha! One time my son put all the change/coins in the house in one of my guitars.... picked it up... why is this so heavy?! 😂😂

@@3x3CustomTamar so here is an idea for you - a piggybank guitar! You will have a guitar/tambourine and your son will have where to put all the change he can find.
Let's Build It not a bad idea!
You are indeed a multi talented person !!!! Once again a Great Project !!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much! And thanks for watching! ☺️☺️
Hi Tamar! You always bring us the best!!!
Wow amazing wood working skills ...sounds good too. If you didn't like the. Closeness of the tuning peg you could remove one tuner and glue in a dowel and even add a veneer over the head stock
to hide the patch ...then redrill your new peg location.
Thanks!
Nice job. The means and methods you use are fine, it is a learning experience to go through to find a better way. We are all human and because of that we make mistakes. Experience shows us how to minimise the mistakes on future projects.
Totally agree! Thanks!!
Very cool and sounds great too, only thing I'd add would be to put a support under the neck to support it while you're hammering the frets in.
Thanks so much! This was such a fun build. That would prob be a good idea next time
...some different approaches to building. Thank you for sharing.
I really enjoy your videos and the precision of your work. This project was a home run! Enjoyed your playing as well!
Thanks so much! So fun to build
Awesome project, smoke on the water sounded great.
🤘🤘
lovely piece of wood to work and show some creative expression
Thanks! This was such a fun project
I like the fact that you made it with a weird shape. Very creative. My dulcimer has 3 strings. Well, 4, but the drone is double.
BEAUTIFULLY done! I especially like the way you have clean access to the uppermost fret!
Thanks! I put a lot of thought into that part!
That is so cool , the string thru body is a nice touch . keep on making cool videos.
Thanks! Easier than I thought to would be
Now we know why this guitars are expensive, just so much work and skill, well done
15:02 ... yes, making a hollow box from a solid chunk of wood was crazy (and not just a bit) ... and cigar boxes are easy to find in any tobacco shop... still, the end result is mighty impressive, looks pretty cool! And it sounds terrific, acoustic and electric!!! And, yes indeed, Del Puckett rules!!
Haha! He does! I just had to see that idea through to the finish line. Ha
@@3x3CustomTamar your perseverance paid off! It's a great build!
Wonderful design and build. Really nice sound. I don't think you need to be so critical of your work. I am not a guitar player but you killed it.
Thanks so much! I think being critically helps me do better next time. Most ppl won’t notice the little mistakes. But I really want to try and perfect my craft as much as I possible can. 🤘🤘🤘
wow tamar!! you are amezing
great carpenter
great guitar player
great vloger
and i bet you are a great mother too
thanks for sharing
I believe the Fender Thinlines have routed bodies. Also, acoustic guitars have fairly thin sides, but they increase the glue surface with linings, so your side thickness is probably fine. I like the idea of making a bridge with fret wire. I hadn't thought of that before.
Good to know!
Woah I didn’t think it was possible but I love your channel even more after watching this!!!
🤘🤘
Between this and the long board vid, you've made me a Subscriber.
Awesome! So happy to hear!
es una guitarra muy hermosa, me animaste a hacer una para mi hija pero morada eres muy buena en la fabricacion . . . gracias
I don't know anything about woodworking but it certainly looks good and has a cool gritty sound.
Ha thanks! It was really fun to build. And fun to play!
I'm thrilled. We have the same Japanese Rasp! Really creative ideas and techniques! Thank you. cheers...rr
Thanks so much! I love that thing....
I've been wanting to do this and make an electric 4-string. You make it look easy!
It was so fun. I totally want to make another one!
Locater pin was super smart! Check out something called a bandsaw box. You may be able to use that technique for the body.
Yeh. I’ve seen bandsaw boxes. That would be a good idea. But my bandsaw isn’t that reliable, I didn’t want to count on it for anything. Ha. Thanks!
Absolutely fabulous. Great body shape and the intonation sounds spot on! You truly are a 'can do' and 'will do' creator. 'Rock On' Tamar.
Thanks so much! I never thought dealing with intonation was something I could do!
Another and easier design for someone to have a go would be a lap steel guitar. The neck would be the centre piece of the laminated body and therefore no need to make it a hollow body. The only cut outs would be for the electronics. Also, you have a better 'ear' than you are currently aware of and that is why you did so well on the intonation. I remember a previous video you made when you hit your thumb and sang a perfect A pitch to release the pain. Ouch!
Strollingjames Beano Hahahaha! That’s funny that I did that. Thanks for the info!
At least you were able to get some of Nirvana and there. That's a good thing. The "Lego stopper" is a brilliant idea! Nice job.
Haha thanks! 🤘
I think it turned out rather well!
Thinking about making my own three string instrument.
Awesome. Have fun!
Such a cool project! I watched when it came out, and it popped into my head as a great quarantine project. Throughly enjoyed watching it again, thanks.
Awesome! So glad to hear
that locator pin idea was amazing!
