This afternoon, we’re continuing our journey on Alaska Airlines' famous milk run. In the last episode we left off on the ramp in Yakutat, Alaska (YAK). Today, we pick back up there, as we continue to what may be the most beautiful city I’ve ever visited… Juneau, Alaska (JNU). Juneau, is the capital of Alaska and is located in the Gastineau Channel. Surrounded by Glacier Bay National Park, and the Glacier Bay Basin, there is nowhere else like it! Juneau is also the second-largest city in the United States by land area. It is beaten only by one city, that we will fly to in the next segment of the milk run…. And, no. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not Phoenix, Arizona. This short one hour flight, may hold the crown for the most beautiful flight I’ve ever taken. I say that, but the next segment of the milk run was just as good if not better. I told you these flights only get better as we go! Enjoy!
I lived in Alaska as a young girl in the 70's. I miss the scenery, trees, and the mountains. My dad eventually got stationed to the lower 48 states, and I will always remember flying out of Fairbanks for the last time. Thank you for sharing.🙌💙
Absolutely beautiful footage, loved the snow capped mountains at takeoff, and the landing footage was off the charts, loved that low turn near the end. Alaska is beautiful. Great vid.😧😧😊😊
You weren't kidding when you said it gets better down the line! Up until this point,sitting on the left side was a personal choice--seeing that steep turn and descent into JNU certainly was a jackpot for you,doing a 'flyby' of JNU as well,what luck! If indeed the pilot ferried fuel from ANC, he LOVES to burn fuel,sitting as we did at YAK,after moving a few feet from the 'shackport'--neat shot of an Alaskan cargo flight on final, surprised the captain never made an announcement as to why you were waiting for so long before taxiing to the runway--wondering if Alaskan does nighttime 'milk runs'? Would be challenging to land at CDV or YAK in the dark--glad you decided to part ways with your aircraft here,time to get some food,get some exercise and crash at your hotel--any energy for sightseeing? JNU isn't far from Canada,a country still off-limits to US citizens. The scenery here,while spectacular,reminds me of NW Montana,Colorado and Salt Lake City
I do think I got the best possible shots on this flight. Ultimately, I’m not sure why we sat so long on the ramp expect that there was another Alaska flight inbound that you noted. With no control tower and no radar, perhaps they chose to be ultra cautious considering both aircraft needed to be on the runway for a considerable amount of time due to the back taxiing required. I didn’t get out much in Juno. I got a bite to eat and crashed. Although, it was somewhat hard to sleep, considering the grounds keepers at the hotel we’re working until after 10:00pm. I guess with that much light, you can keep working well into the night…
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. The next leg of the flight is quite spectacular as well. Although, I switched from flight 66 to flight 62 as flight 66 went straight from Juneau to Seattle, and I wanted to stop in several other cities like Sitka in Ketchikan.
Again a relatively smooth approach. For Alaska. I believe that the aviation gods can even play a different game. If there is rough wind somewhere than it's there.
Such a beautiful approach, any flights to or from Paine Field soon? If not maybe do a fight from there quite short flights that would definitely be good for a full flight video.
Wait til you get to Ketchikan popcorn as well as you can deplane and the last leg of the Milk Run feels weird to Seattle because you are at high cruising altitude for the first time in a while and a longer flight too
No. Not during Covid. It was 7 uploads per week the whole time. Now, when i started the channel I only uploaded three times per week. I then moved to five times per week, and since then it has been seven or more.
I must say, I've loved these "Milk Run" videos so much! You definitely weren't lying when you said how beaufitul the footage would be! Question though, do you actually get off the plane or do you just stay one for the next leg? Is it pretty similar to the United Airlines "Island Hopper" flights?
Thanks my friend. I’m glad you’re enjoying them. I certainly enjoyed taking them. As for your question. Most of the stops you are encouraged to stay on the aircraft. From what I gathered, you could step off the plane if you wanted to. But the small cities like Yakutat, Cordova, Sitka, etc. There are no amenities inside the terminal, and you have to re-clear security to get back on. So again, it was suggested that you remain on the aircraft. At the slightly larger cities like Juneau and Ketchikan, you could get off and grab something to eat or use the restroom, similar to a through flight on Southwest.
It’s also worth mentioning, that we were running quite ahead of schedule on most of these flights. So, we were on the ground sometimes for over an hour. I don’t know if that was because the weather was so good, or if Alaska intentionally pads the schedules on these flights. Either way, if I hadn’t stopped to overnight in Juneau to catch another milk run the next day, I would’ve gotten off in Juneau. And on the flight the next day, I got off in Ketchikan for about an hour.

Well, at Yakutat, the taxiway doesn't connect directly to the end of the runway. So, in order to use the whole runway, the pilots must back taxi, then swing a 180 to takeoff. Did we need the whole runway? Probably not. Could we have taken off at the intersection and been fine? Probably. But it's common practice in aviation to utilize the entire available runway, regardless of how much you need, to give yourself the most buffer in the event of an emergency.
I don't know how those Alaska pilots do it, landing 26 in Juneau, really tricky, had to go around twice when I tried it in the sim before I got it down.
If I was him, I would skip Frontier Airlines for my own sake and sanity. Every time I’ve flown them it’s been a living hell. In fact two of my flights have been canceled unexpectedly with them (Not for weather reasons).
It’s always possible; but like spiddy mentioned, I try to avoid Sprint, Allegiant and Frontier. They just really aren’t the type of airlines I enjoy flying on. But never say never.
