That was incredible! Thank you for the ATC too. I lived in Venice back in the early 1990's and saw a couple of go-arounds, and it always looked weird to see a plane that low having to bank and accelerate quickly like that. The pilot here seemed very calm and collected and the ATC seemed to handle this very professionally as well. Great video!
+Fred Herrman Thank you so much! Wow very lucky, nice to be so close to the sea and the airport :) Did you see the recent go around video at Lukla, Nepal? That looked scary!
No I didn't. I will definitely look for it now. What amazed me too about your video is how quickly the pilot had to react. I would imagine that after a five hour plus flight from New York, everyone, the crew, the passengers, and certainly the pilots, are ready to set the jet down and de-board. And though I know the pilots have to always be very alert, there must be a feeling of, "Okay, let's complete this final approach and hit the head" kind of feeling inside them. So to have to quickly pull up and turn north with such little space left must feel like taking on a whole new cycle of flight that one would rather not have to execute.
+Fred Herrman Yep absolutely - at one point you can hear the stress in the pilot's voice as he is dealing with ATC on the go around. Very professional too in that he ensures that TOGA is set and calls that before responding to ATC.
+babolo He sure did, and under a little stress on the radio too. On the full video I'll be pushing out next week we get stuck in a ground queue after landing, and he comes on the PA sounding very stressed and annoyed at the whole situation!
At this time, runway 24R was closed for construction. You can see it on the go around. There are two sets of parallel runways. 24R and 24L on the north side, 25R and 25L on the south side. Normally the outboards, 24R and 25L are used for landings, and the inboards, 24L and 25R are used for takeoffs. Since they were down one runway on the north complex, they were trying to fit aircraft in with minimum separation to move the traffic normally, and they just got too close. An A-321 close to maximum landing weight using flaps 3 can have an approach speed of around 150 knots. The tower asked him to slow, but they very well may have been at their final, or slowest speed already. Most other Boeings and Airbus narrow body aircraft can slow down towards 130 knots using full flaps.
+joetocayo Thank you so much for your detailed explanation! I kind of thought it was due to the runway being closed, interesting to hear about why we couldn't slow down enough though. We ended up having a long wait on the ground as everyone was taxying in the same way, we had a 20 minute queue to the stand :(
I experienced a even late go around. The main wheels were already down when the pilots performed a go around due to tremendous rainfall during moonson season
Great views of the urban sprawl that is L.A. on a relatively smog free morning. I liked the way the pilot said, almost as an aside, minimum fuel.......i.e. don't make us go around again!! Thanks for sharing and happy landings (without go arounds!)
When we fly, we are among professionals. Well done to all involved. Human fallibility is a given, but correcting and immediate response that comes along with practice and drill is so important. Great work by these ATC and pilots. Thank you for safeguarding us in the air. (now if you could just give that silly little 20 year old cuttie pie who is texting on the 101 a vector out of my collision path I would be even more impressed. LOL)
+cattleman36 You put that far more eloquently than I could ever do, well done! :) And yes, after listening to the ATC afterward I was massively impressed at the professionalism and textbook handling by the pilots and ATC (regardless of how grumpy the pilot sounded :))
Awesome video! :) LA looks really nice from above. And your video really captures the feeling of being on an aircraft.. looking out the window. Thanks!
I'll add my thanks as well. I never get tired of the view, especially on days like that!!! The ATC audio makes it even more enjoyable!! 😊 ✈😊 ps ... you made this LA (SMO) native extremely happy when I watched this, as I have not been able to fly home for some time now.
+bbarrowsvegas Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video! It was a beautiful morning for a nice sightseeing tour around LA, by your username are you in LAS now?
Upon listening, I didn’t get the feeling that the pilot sounded annoyed. I personally think he handled it very professionally. I think he had to stay focused on the task at hand and wanted to give quick responses so he can remain attentive.
You can't really get annoyed. As a controller in the Los Angeles Arrivals area of SoCal TRACON, I probably saw, on average, 2 or 3 go-arounds during my work week. It just happens at a busy airport. The alternative is to waste a mile on every single arrival, which would result in far more delays.
fantastic video mate! I love the approach at LAX and the take off over the Pacific coast it brought back great memories for me! I'm always fascinated how the pilot knows how far out to take the turn for the second approach.
Awesome Video. Very Nice Capturing the whole Los Angeles which is huge. I live next to the park @ 13:52. Yes I know LA even from up in the sky. Thanks for Sharing. 😎👍
What a lovely video. Great upload! I hear AA's new 321s are really nice... They certainly seem to be quiet and smooth... Not much noise coming out of those big fans when spooling up for go around..
+Daniele Regoli Thank you! Yes it was a really nice aircraft, very comfortable and more like a long haul seat than a shorthaul one, with seatback touchscreen TVs, wifi etc. Very quiet too - although I imagine the go-around would have sounded louder in front of the engines :)
+AppealPlay Yep it was definitely worth the hassle - I had a huge grin on my face when we went around, to the point where the guy sat next to me was like 'I hope you got that on video' :D
I experienced my first go around last night in Atlanta. The pilots didn’t communicate to us why but thanks to me watching several Mayday episodes in the past, I knew exactly what was happening . I still want to know why though 😂. Nevertheless we did a second approach and landed safely
Experienced my first go around 2 days ago in Charlotte. It took a good while for the pilot to tell is what was happening, which freaked alot of people out the guy next to me started verbally freaking out which mad e me nervous even though I kinda knew what was happening because I've seen so many of these videos. Thats why staying calm is important
I absolutely love the power of these planes! I work at fedex at bishop airport in flint MI and watching the planes land and take off never gets old! I have to ask are you a pilot?
+scooter0241 Awesome! I used to have my license but haven't flown in many years now as it's so expensive over here. It's much more fun flying around the world on commercial than puddle jumping between grass airstrips :)

That was more than a half mile final when they cleared the guy for takeoff... the controller was trying to "shoot the gap" but obviously made it a little too close.
+pbateson Are they rare? I inadvertently caused one the other day, a Southwest 737 was behind me for landing, and my approach speed was just too slow. ATC had them go around, when they caught up to me as I tried to clear the runway as quickly as possible (which wasn't fast enough). I kinda wondered how the pilot explained that to the passengers. Kind of a trip having a 737 right overhead, too, in a little Cherokee.
inflight Video -nice video & ATC! I subscribe. For those like myself who were wondering what ETOPs is I looked it up. Its kinda like what we used to call "blue water ops" in Naval Aviation. Its for aircraft flying routes where the nearest suitable emergency airport is at least 60 minutes away. (For the Nav it was either the boat or the water, no other bingo options in range). ETOPS means "Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Standards" and type certification as such requires about a dozen systems to meet more stringent endurance requirements to ensure sufficient diversion safety on these routes. Examples are (for the A321), extra fuel tanks, 3 electrical systems, tougher APU, Airframe & Engine combinations proven capable of meeting these requirements, Good OEI (one engine inactive) flight characteristics, etc. The AA A321S sent to Honolulu was non ETOPs, (A321H designates ETOPs certified). AA stated that although non-ETOPs, that airframe was exactly the same configuration as their A321H's except for the required extra medical oxygen and the extra fire retardant requirements of ETOP. AA stated the range and fuel was the same as an A321H so they must have installed the extra fuel tanks already. The return flight was cancelled so my question is did AA have to certify that A321S to a A321H before they could fly back to LAX?
The funny thing is that his routing from the go around and the right turn straight over KSMO at 5,000 is extremely close to the Special Flight Rules Area that goes from KSMO over LAX midfield at 3500-4500 (and in fact to the bottom of Class B which is 5,000 right there). In the SFR area you have GA aircraft that are not talking to ATC threading the needle. LAX tower must have been pretty certain there was no one coming through or into the corridor.
7:20 What is that little bright white thing like flying low to the water in opposite direction of the plane when the plane is in a right turn. It is too small for a little plane but it isn't absolutely not 'a Balloon' because it has a lot more speed than a typical ballon would have moving trough wind. Strange, already an old video so maybe it's already in the comments somewhere. But if someone knows or thinks what it is I would like it very much to hear it!

Whoa! By the time ATC cleared the aircraft to takeoff on 24L you were just over a mile out from landing. I think the tower should not try and "squeeze" departures in between aircraft landing when they are so close. ATC caused unnecessary delay (via the missed approach etc) for the pax of this flight.
+Ryan Tapley Yep we were very close when they cleared the Delta to takeoff. If you listen closely the departing aircraft reads back the wrong runway too!
@@firstnamelastname9553 Airbus has two variants. The winglets (which are the one you can see in the video) and the sharklets. Theyre two different things.
@@VelocityFilmsCO As far as I am aware, there is no real difference between the two, apart from cosmetics. It's just that Boeing have called them winglets and Airbus have called them sharklets.
Did ATC order the go around? And was it due to traffic on the runway? I thought that's what I heard but I am not exactly fluent in pilot-atc chatter so lost who was who.
The airline accountants don't like it either. I wonder what the total cost is for a go-around: fuel, engine maintenance time, labor time, et cetera. Any airline accountants out there know the answer?
Best go around inside I ever seen ! Thanks for this epic job ! 2 questions.. Fish eye lens or go pro? Are Atc radios allowed in flight? Cause I'd do what u do.. Good job man
+Mike guitar Haha I was there for around 12 hours, arrived around 9am, headed down to Redondo Beach for some shopping, met wiith a friend near to LAX for lunch and spent a few hours at Imperial Hill before getting the 9pm flight back to London :)
Nice vid. I noticed the pilot called out "minimum fuel" to the tower once he got his landing clearance during the 2nd approach. JFK to LAX is pushing the max non-stop range for the A321.
KCAE 80s..We had a C150 doing t and gs and a Eastern 727 "yeah I'm a old fart" was on a mod base to final. He was told of the trainer on final and replied he was "draggin his feet" as it was. Well the 150 took his sweet time and the tower told the 727 to go around rather than blow the 150 off. All hell broke loose. Capt told tower " That just cost us more fuel than he will burn in a year!!" Tower gave him a # to call but Capt said he wanted to talk to him face to face. AND HE DID. Walked across the ramp and they exchanged words.
I love the video and how you synced it to ATC! Got a question though; when I compare what the flaps settings look like on the A321 in Flight Simulator X to the flap settings in your video, it looks like the flaps are set to 3 in your video instead of 4. Setting the flaps to 4 would have let the aircraft slow down further and maybe prevented the go-around. Thoughts?
Thank you, glad you liked it! Hmm I'm not entirely sure I haven't flown in FSX for a long time! I know they were having problems slowing down. I wonder if they were going too quick for flaps 4, they were pretty picky about the exact speed they wanted us :)
Yah, I play Infinite Flight, so I recognize those mountains. I forgot your weren't on base or downwind/crosswind. Final Approach 24L (window view is facing) KBUR. Sorry!
They had a runway down for maintenance so were squeezing everyone in, I was surprised to hear they cleared the aircraft to depart while we were so close!
Awesome that you got a go around!! The ATC is a fantastic inclusion, liked :D
It felt awesome to be onboard for one! Thanks for the comment and like!

This happened to me at DFW airport a few years ago. Scared the shit outta me cause it never happened to me before and didn't know what was going on.
Well done on the video . Subbed!
+blakman7 Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
Cool video! Subscribed.
+StealthParrot Thanks! Thanks so much for subscribing!
Great views. Anyone know what that huge construction job is?
Thank you :) I believe it's the new Rams stadium under construction.
Is that Palm Springs to the East?
+Jaden Bezzel We flew in near to San Bernadino (where the right turn is), from there it was a straight in approach to runway 24L :)
Well done ..... Nice
Thank you!
Busy day at LAX... (though not the worst I've seen) Just start counting the number of aircraft in line to take off at 17:28.
Nice vid. I noticed the pilot called out "minimum fuel" to the tower once he got his landing clearance during the 2nd approach. JFK to LAX is pushing the max non-stop range for the A321.
Subbed...good stuff man
+Serge Byakov Thank you! Look forward to sharing more with you!
how did you get the atc audio
Hey, ATC on this was from LiveATC's archives after the flight.
American Airlines AA171 Go around at 24L Don’t Panic
KCAE 80s..We had a C150 doing t and gs and a Eastern 727 "yeah I'm a old fart" was on a mod base to final. He was told of the trainer on final and replied he was "draggin his feet" as it was. Well the 150 took his sweet time and the tower told the 727 to go around rather than blow the 150 off. All hell broke loose. Capt told tower " That just cost us more fuel than he will burn in a year!!" Tower gave him a # to call but Capt said he wanted to talk to him face to face. AND HE DID. Walked across the ramp and they exchanged words.
16:36 goodbye Hollywood park, spent many days there with my dad
That's awesome I bet you had some great memories, I imagine it's a good place for plane spotting too :)
I mena, you live in a big city in the USA, very stupid place to live. Thank God I live in the UK in a small town phew i'm safe
@@noelphilips thanks man, yep, many memories and plane spotting all day long!
Where is the go around?
Subscribed!
+Amarildo Júnior Thank you!
Look at all those planes waiting to take off. I’m from a small city so you never see that here.
Loved it! Subscribed, how did you manage to get the ATC recording?
+David Delgado Thank you so much! The ATC is from the archives at LiveATC.net :)
6:45 I love life and those beatiful moments
How did you get the ATC?
Great video thank you
You're very welcome, thanks for watching!
Awesome! Seat?
Thanks! This was seat 13F.
what method do you use to récord the wing view , tripod?
Hi, I use a suction mount attached to the window.
Was that a jet at 7:35 flying?
It was moving really fast though
I think it was a small aircraft, ATC advised of traffic a couple of minutes before.
how did you attach the gopro?
+PanduWic Hi, I use a suction cup attached to the window :)
I wonder if they were going too quick for flaps 4, they were pretty picky about the exact speed they wanted us :)
what seat are you ?
+Will Badot Seat was 13F on this one :)
Yah, I play Infinite Flight, so I recognize those mountains. I forgot your weren't on base or downwind/crosswind. Final Approach 24L (window view is facing) KBUR. Sorry!
I was on the same flight but at a different time
Who the hell cleared that departing a/c to 24L? WTF?
They had a runway down for maintenance so were squeezing everyone in, I was surprised to hear they cleared the aircraft to depart while we were so close!
Hearing the pilot say "minimum fuel" at 15:08 isn't a good sign...
Cheers
I was once on a plane that had to go around twice
Awesome! That sounds like great fun! Was it due to weather?
Yeah we were landing in ORD during a blizzard with low visibility
+noah glick Awesome!
What GoPro? C:
+Aviation Flyer Hi, GoPro Hero3 for this one :)
ok thanks! :D
