Thank you so much. Was trying to hem jeans with a much bigger hem than usual and just could not work it out! Watched your tutorial and got it straight away. Thank you for the beautifully clear explanation and video. Also, that tool demo and link; did not know that was a thing, or that I wanted one!😁 Not all heroes wear capes.
I hem almost the same with one difference. I take excess and cut off to 1/4" and hide inside seam so it looks clean and totally original. I finish off with matching denim hem thread that most sewing stores carry. Wash after wash a better way to go.
I have a video for that too. I use the non-destructive method if I'm still "test driving" the jeans/pants or if I intend to re-sell. I do the "trim" method when I know I'm keeping them ~_^
I don't have that type of foot for my sewing machine, but I found that the universal zipper foot can get snug against the hem and without the bulk to deal with. In my case it is a win / win situation.
Hi there ! I'm a senior male who has never sewn anything before ! ha ha . I don't understand how this hem will work ? Where does the 4 inches of fabric go after stiching about 2 inches ( some kind of cuff ) ? Sorry, I'm very confused. I have lots of jeans to shorten ha ha.
Hello! This method creates a folded flap that is half the amount to be taken up. That flop gets pressed upward, in other words the fold is facing up on the inside of the leg. You won’t see it at all, but you may feel it. Hope that helps. Good luck! ^_^
Hello, it depends on the original hem of the trousers. If it has a visible hem, I’d say give it a try. If it’s a blind/invisible hem, then this method wouldn’t retain that invisibility since it’s edge stitched. Hope that helps. Happy crafting ^_^
Hello, Peter. Since I do not cut off and re-hem the hem, I do not have to account for it. I sometimes take up my jeans at the knee using a similar technique; and in the same manner, I do not have to add the length of the hem since I am leaving it intact. Hope that makes sense! Good luck!
Hello, sorry it’s hard to hear me saying it in the video since I sped it up to 1.25 speed, but the foot I used was the edge foot that came with my machine. Rifle through your collection presser feet, there are a lot of great ones that come with most machines. Hope that helps. Happy crafting ^_^
Hola! Supongo que puede comprarlo en alguna tienda de costura. En inglés se llama "Jean-a-ma-jig" o "clearance plate". Aqui se puede comprarlo de Amazon: amzn.to/2tqCIbF Gracias!
Hi :) The same method will work. For example, if you need to take up your jeans 4”, fold it back such that the allowance between the fold and your stitching line is 2”. Once you sew it, it will have non-destructively taken up 4”. Then just press the allowance up and tack it along the inseam and you’re golden. Good luck :)
I’m doing this today. I have about 4 pair to do. Would you please tell me the name of the thing you used that resembled a thick fork to hold down the denim. I may try to order one today. Thanks for the video. Need more new stuff from you. Janice
I'm trying to google 'rocking tool' but can't seem to find anything similar to what you are using. Is it referred to by another name? Is this a tool that should be included when I purchase a new sewing machine? Thank you!
Hi! I was using the edge foot or edgestitch foot. It has a metal fin that rides along the folded edge of your fabric, and the needle will stitch right next to that, creating an edge stitch. It's a great foot that yields tidy results. Good luck!
You had me until you ended with leaving 4 inches living on your jeans. Not a good look wash after wash and you would have to iron Hem down after each wash
I have another video that shows the excess being trimmed off. I buy and resell clothing so if I know I won't be wearing it often, I'll leave the allowance there to be let out later for resale. I understand your point, thank you!
Thanks for your comment. Not sure how other UA-camrs do it, but this works for me. I really like the option to take the hem out in case I want to lengthen or revert to its original length.
Did this today, looks unbelievable!!! I needed to cut off 2 inch so i folded the jeans from the bottom 1 inch.

I recently hemmed a pair of overalls using this technique, and it works perfectly.
But remember to tack the inner cuff to the seam! 😆
Thank you so much for making your video it helped me tremendously

If you are going use matching hem thread for denim why bother saving the original hem? Cut them to the right length and hem them.

Wow mazing very nice 👍👍👍👍

Would this work well with trousers also? Might be a silly question- new to this!

Good ! Nice! Fantastique
Why do you measure half the length at first?
Hello. Because it becomes doubled since it's folded over. Thanks for asking!
@@gemfoxfoodandcraft If they're 4" too long don't you have to add the 5/8 that you leave of the original hem and then divide by 2?

But what if you need like more than 2 inches off from your pants?

Hi! I actually had to Google it. I've seen it referred to as a "Seam Jack", "Bulky Seam Aid", and "Jean A Ma Jig". Hope that helps. Happy sewing!

Thanks good idea - you really talk fast!
Actually the video was rendered at 1.25 speed. If you bump it down to .75 speed, it will sound normal ^_^
