This is awesome! I’ve been sewing for years and always used pins to keep my hems in place while re-sewing them. No more! The clips are a major game changer! No more pin pricks! Thank you!!🎉
I've recently lost my wonderful Mum who was so talanted, especially in dressmaking. No one to shorten my jeans now. But after watching this I'm going to give it a go. Thanks 👍
I'm so sorry you lost your mother recently; please accept my condolences. I am here for the same reason. My mom passed away about two years ago and she did all my hemming and alteration work. She was an amazing seamstress despite it just being a hobby. She did everything from clothes to drapes to making the most exquisitely perfect slipcovers you've ever seen. After she passed, I then went to my grandmother for a while because she loved doing them and insisted as she didn't want me to "waste my money" on a tailor (she also did amazing work so she didn't have to insist too hard!l. She passed away about a year ago, and since then I haven't needed anything done.
Long story short, I vaguely remember how to using a sewing machine from Home Ec in middle school some 25 years ago, so I figured I'd get a cheap secondhand sewing machine from Goodwill and try my hand at it, and then I was looking up videos on how to properly hem jeans, and here I am. I wonder how many other people are here for similar reasons.
What a strange world we live in where the comments on a video about sewing a hem can bring up wonderful memories... anyways someone is cutting onions in here, so I'll leave it at that.
My mother too
Oh really very sorry for ur big lose
Allah give her high place in heaven Ameen
I m sorry😔

I tried this, and it actually works beautifully! Thank you so much. I'm 5'2", so I have to shorten EVERYTHING.
real im a couple inches taller and i feel like a gnome in pants bruh why do they size them for goliath
THANK YOU!!! This is the clearest, most precise video I've ever seen on this technique. I understood everything and went straight ahead and re-hemmed my jeans. Thank you again so much!
I understand that you are a bot, but you have a very beautiful name, I think I would have done everything for you, 20 years ago. Remember that you are the best thing in our life and this is worth living for, UA-cam is just a good helper. I'm a surgeon
@@sewwayWhat in the world are you talking about?
A person commented that they liked your video and said it helped them hem their jeans.
What are you going on about the person being a bot( they’re not) and talking about how you would have done everything for them twenty years ago and they are the best thing in your life?
Correct with a big “C”.
Thank you for your video. In a world driven by consumism is a wonderful thing being able to make things work and adapt them instead of throwing them out just bc theyre not ‘perfect’.
Thank you

~ translate
This will flip up the next time it is washed and will always want to fold outward at the seam. You could use iron on tape to keep the fold upright perhaps.
That is so clever, and not being a seamstress gives me hope I can hem my jeans! Thank you for posting this tutorial!
If only I had known this method years ago. I am 78 but going to try it. Bless you!
If you sew “over the original seem thread” with the same color Jean thread you can purchase… You won’t see that seam at the bottom! I use to alter for a major Jean retailer… 😉
It's a good idea, I didn't know
What if you need to take off three inches, can you still use this same method? How to keep bottom (underside excess) from sticking out?
Can I use the same method with a top which has a band at bottom?
Thank you for sharing. I'm new to sewing but I tried your method on a pair of very long sweats I just bought and this worked like a charm. Thank you!
I never thought about using this method on sweats! So glad you mentioned it!!

After your wash the jeans you start to see the seam inside and look not to good, eliminate the xtra fabric and put inside the seem then you topstitching whit the write color trend
What do you do if it's like a 6 inch you cut off the access? Or can I just use some double side and tape to take it up? So I can let them back out
Did u ever find a fix
My solution would be to make very small stitches up 6 inches from the hem so it stays up and doesnt hang down. The stitch would need to be very small and unnoticeable since its in the middle of your trouser leg
@@epson9612 She has already answered this if you scroll down to earlier comments 😀
@@jessw391absolutely not, you can just trim it to half inch seam allowance
@@tinaliu6537 I've done that before but sometimes it would flip over. I would definitely sew it down to be safe. I would say dont keep it 6 inches. Cut it down and sew it which I've done recently and has worked really well and it is unnoticeable
This is great. Thank you. Im going to try it. Can i ask what sewing foot you changed to please? ❤
It’s a zipper foot
Thank you for this video. I tried it and it worked !
This is sooo cool! I’ve never seen this done before. Thank you!
Thank you SO MUCH, I was about to do this the real hard way!
This is SO helpful. Gave me the confidence to take up my denim skirt which has been annoying me for years
Thank you very much. But you're not related to Murphy in the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? If not, then thank you again
Miss, here the inside folded part is equal in length to the hem length which is enabling it to hide underneath (1.5+1.5=3), please show what to do incases where the inside folded part is larger than the hem part as it will stick out from below the hem
In this case, you need to cut off the excess fabric and process the cut with an overlock or zigzag, in extreme cases - manually.
@sewway I don't have a sewing machine and I don't understand what process the cut with an over lock or zigzag mean, can you explain more?
@@flower2202 The overlock and zigzag is just to keep the edge from unravaling. You could also just cut the length off with pinking shears which were invented to keep material from unravaling before zigzag came along.
This works great. I’m actually a little proud of myself. Thank you.
Thank you
Just tried it.. love this!!Thanks for sharing.
Excellently demonstrated. Thank you so much!
What foot did you use on the sewing machine? What is the reason for changing the foot?
Zipper foot. The stitching line will be as close as possible to the hem stitching line.
Thanks very clear. You could add some stiches to fic the inside and avoid issues to enter the feet So the inner part is fix
My only other suggestion is to hammer the thick seams to make them easier to sew over. This is my favorite way to hem jeans.
what is the name of the foot attachment used in the video?
Seems to work if you need a small hem. What if I need a 5 inch hem?
Cut off excess and close seam allowance with overlock or zigzag stitch.
Get new pants
Never overlock on Jeans. It will break the machine
Thank you!
I've done that for my husband, but I found that the jeans roll up . good thing they are only for working on the farm. I cut the excess off because it was to long.
ua-cam.com/video/P02Mne95-s8/v-deo.html
What if I don't have the foot for my machine that you showed?
Wonder if this will work as well on the new (old) bell bottom flares that are making a comeback?
This one the best compare to other method i hope my tailor in my place know how to do this
Thanks, he knows
Thank you so much for this awesome simple step by step video. Appreciate it VERY MUCH!
Wow, what a great video and so easy to follow, thanks for sharing your expertise,
What is the presser foot that you use and it is compatible in any sewing machine like Singer Sewing machine Heavy Duty . Answer pls ! Watching from Scotland 🏴 new viewers .
She has already answered this if you scroll down and look for answers to previous comments. She says it is a zipper foot.
Do I need a special needle for denim. Thank you
Yes, denim requires a heavier gauge needle such as 90 (14) or 100 (16). These can be found at fabric and sewing supply stores.
1:01 What are those things called? My mom has sewing machine but I believe she doesn't have any other types of those things aside from the original ones
Included with any sewing machine. It's called a zipper foot.
I have seen multiple videos, but yours is the best one. It looks very simple, but I know it is not. I have two questions, 1. Which sewing machine do you recommend? 2. it should support the detach bottom part. for denim leg alteration.
You are right that just because acrobats in the circus can easily and cheerfully jump on a trampoline does not mean that it did not require years of training.
Almost all modern sewing machines have a removable table.
When choosing a sewing machine, remember that it is not the sewing machine that sews, but the person. What, did our grandmothers wear ugly clothes?
Well, one last thing. If your sewing machine does not have a removable table, you will also need to sew on the inside jeans, only the second edge will be facing you, uptowards. Well, it is like if you wanted to stitch around the edge of the pan. Place the pan on the machine and then you will understand.
This is wonderful! Thank you so very much for sharing this! 💕 Kim
So simple and so clever!
Lot's tnks I learned a lots may God bless your wrks
Thank you
What about hiding excess fabric then undoing it later? For a growing boy?
There will be a seam mark on the denim. If this is not important, you can do the same and attach the excess fabric manually inside the leg.
Can't this be done on long sleeves with cuffs as well? I feel like the concept applies the same to sleeves
So do you actually sew underneath the same as a jeans, to make them shorter by the ankles
QUESTION what if the lengh you need to shorten is greater than the width of the original hem? Cus that extra length would show.
Doesnt that bulk fall down when putting your feet through the pants? And walking too?
Very useful. Thanks heaps for the demonstration 🤩
Awesome...can you please tell the machine brand for jeans needle and settled which you have changed...
Can it still be done if my jeans are about 6 inches too long?
What type of foot preser did she use to sew over the old hem?
Thanks so much for the clear instructions. I have a few pairs of nearly new trousers and jeans that need taking up, and I usually struggle to make the hems look right. Your video is just what I needed.
Thanks for the kind words. If people learned to always be kind, the world would become the happiest place in the universe
is the presser foot style called something special? would have to purchase that....
presser foot for zipper
What foot have you used in the video.I have a singer 4452 sewing machine
Zipper foot
@@sewway which stitch setting have you used please let me know
Thank you
Which stitch setting I have to use for zipper foot
Straight stitch, medium length. Try it on a sample first, it's an easy job
@@sewway thank you 🙏🏻
What’s brand is this sewing machine pls, kindly name make and model. Thnx
This is an old model, but very simple and reliable. It stitches everything, including sheets of metal, it's a joke.
What a great skill set and you keep the original length if ever needed. Can you do mine?
I can only show, I can't do.
@@sewway 🙂🙂
Best and fastest I've seen , bravo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💐
It's always nice to hear this from real men who know how to appreciate the work of a woman.
Excellent demonstration! Thanks!
Have you ever used this with other fabrics? I'm wondering if it would work for jersey (I'm going to turn a long sleeved dress into short sleeves)
The measurement of the wrist is much smaller than the circumference of the arm above the elbow. So no, it won't work.
Any issues with the hem wanting roll up and exposing the seam?
ua-cam.com/video/P02Mne95-s8/v-deo.html
But what do you do with the excess material? You certainly can’t leave it there if you hem like 2 inches??
I’m new to seeing what foot is that?
What setting did you have the thread on?
Normal setting
Hello ,great!
Can you please tell me what is the name and model of your machine ?
No I can't, she's so old I forgot her name
@@sewway ok thanks anyway for reply me , good work 👍
Omg! Thank you so much for this video, I use to pay for someone to hem my daughter’s jeans and now I did it👏😘🤗
👏❤ congratulations
Not sure how you cut the extra material off left inside ?
@@philipwatts9033 I think it’s left there.
@@djangle67 ok so it’s ends up a bit thicker.
Thanks
Why is it necessary to change the foot bit? (Beginner here) 🙏
Then the seam will be as close as possible to the hem. Take a zipper foot and a regular one and compare, then you will understand.
What if you need to shorten 2 inch? What should I do with the big fold?
Sure from the outside it looks good, but how will it effect sliding your foot in and out? will you feel a bump?
Wow - this is so effective, and so simple and quick! I LOVE it :) Now I am going to shorten 2 pairs of my yoga pants! Thank you very much!~
Thank you

Yoga huh..if you get that huge bubble yoga butt, you won't need to shorten your yoga pants..Ass will eat that size up for sure..try it..
Hello, I was wondering what presser foot you used?
Zipper Presser Foot
@@sewway Thank you. That is what I thought it was but I always like to check to make sure that I have it right.
Can you do this by hand don't have a sewing machine thank you
Why not? 200 years ago there were no sewing machines, and people did not go naked
What if you need 8 cm. You can’t just fold that in. I watched this to see what to do with the leftover fabric on the inside of the pant leg
Which presser foot did you use?
Did you need to take one inch shorter?
Yes, an inch shorter. 1 inch = 2.54 cm
Great job 👍 Happy New Year
Complete beginner...what foot do you use?
I just turned my jeans into shorts help
Can you cut off the excess on the inside? I have to shorten jeans aprox 4 inches.
Would this work for linen pants as well?
Have not tried. But I think it will work. Just keep in mind that the fabric should be dark. On light, a fake hem will be noticeable.
Also, am I understanding correctly, whatever amount I want to hem, I just halve that and sew it up against the original hem?
Yes, that is right. If these are children's jeans, then you can take everything off when the child grows up. You can also use a regular foot, but usually a zipper foot is included in a set of sewing feet. You can take the foot from a friend
So this method will keep the jeans original chain stitch and help create the roping fade effect. And will also keep the original leg opening size?
The first question is yes.
Secondly, this method will also preserve the original size of the opening of the leg in the event that the jeans do not have a strong narrowing of the leg to the bottom.
What if the pants are really long and they’re more than 3 inches long and I do this to the hem, am I able to cut the extra coverage on the inside?
Yes, you can cut and overlock the cut edges. But, if these are children's jeans, then it is better to put the excess up and baste it inside with threads. Children grow up fast
Can i do that with my 15-20 cm too long jean?
I will try this today. I wish you would have spoken throughout the video.
Thank you so much you’re a lifesaver 💖
Worked great! Thank you!
Can this be done with out a sewing machine?
you alter jeans lengh to bit shorter ok, if longer want to shorter means how?
Jeans jeans have a narrowing to the bottom from the knee, so it is not always possible to do this.
can i do this without changing the foot?
Mind blown. Did you see or skip over the super thick part?
You are very attentive. This is the most difficult area, we have a video on the channel how to do it.
Can i cut the extra inner fabric without sewing one more time? thanks
Yes, but you need to overcast at least manually, but rather with a zigzag stitch
We have a video on how to do it right
I think the inside hem will eventually fall down slow the hemline. It appears to be more than the hem itself. (Below) not slow. Even if you stitch the extra to the Seams I don't think it will stand up after a few washes
How do you do it if you want to cuff your jeans on occasion?
Which mechine are u using
i dont like the extra material in there. can you cut it out?
Can I cut off any excess? I have way more excess than that.
Of course
Can someone help me out. No cutting required? Then how it was shorten?
If you shorten it a little, then the excess, folded in half up, can be sewn by hand (inside the leg).
@@sewway ahhh this is only good if the shorten length is no more than 1 inch. If it is longer, cutting of excess fabric is necessary
Yes, sure. Then overcast, you can zigzag. But if it is children's jeans you can not cut off, children grow up very soon.
@@sewway can i cut off the excess fabric nearest to the newly sewn line without doing any zigzag stitch?
The edges of cutting fabric will fray. Overcast them at least by hand.
I've about 2 inches to take off? Will this method work?
Yes it will
@@sewway Thanks
Thank you for this video, just did my son's trousers. Thank you ,good day
I have been doing this for a few years. My grandson wsa chubby and always had to buy jeans that were too long in order to fit in waist. But thank goodness he is a teenager now and he needs the 29-30 inch length.
Thank you for doing this video
