I'm sure the gurdy doesn't cost much in materials. It's mostly wood and a few metal parts. The real price is the expertise that goes into building one.
@@TopofTheHill3D Yeah I'd say you're low. I'd give you the hundred bucks in materials and 600 to build me a damn hurdy gurdy If you can bust it out as good as that one and I am the stingiest person I know
It is not the materials that make this instrument costly, it is the skill, patience, commitment, and hands that few posses these days. Very well done and deserves great appreciation, The Lord bless you!
I'm so glad Steve Bannon finally got a hobby. (sorry, I couldn't resist) I've been planning on building an HG and have looked at a lot of DIY videos. Your instrument has the best sound of all the home mades I've heard. Bravo.
Absolutely gorgeous and it sounds great. I'm building my second gurdy and cannot even fathom that you could build something like this for under $100, unless you have the world's largest scrap wood pile. LOL Kudos to you for making such a professional instrument.
Wow, that is a really clean sound. How come some instruments have a really, really rustic and dirty sound while playing, and others - like yours - has a perfectly clean sound? Does it primarily have to do with the keys and how they are constructed?
@@wakingdragon9085 But some of the gut stringed instruments are the most clean sounding of them all, much cleaner sounding than metal and nylon for example. Just look at Tobie Miller and her gut strung baroque hurdy gurdy :)
@@michaelcaplin8969 It's has little to do with the string type, and everything to do with 1) correct string pressure on the wheel 2) correct cottoning of the strings & rosining of the wheel 3) The wheel being perfectly true 4) The keys & tangents being correctly built
A kit for one like this would easily be $1500. They are VERY complicated. And there aren't kits for high quality gurdies due to the complicated assembly. Just as there aren't "Piano kits."
@@bluematter3962 I know Hurdy Gurdies are expensive. I was just commenting about the price the man said he made it under in the title. You don't need to be so arrogant.
Would you sell the building plans for this beauty?? I have some skills on the building/woodcrafting side... but design/plan making is beyond me... Beautiful work and lovely sound!!!
I glad to hear you can build a good quality Hurdy gurdy for under $100 I've seen kits going for. $999 which is ridiculously price for the parts in a kit. The kits are nice! but no way does the pieces and parts cost that much to acquire. I wish their would go for a $100 or $200
Since Hurdy Gurdy is such a specific and unique design without really any related instrument before it, it has to have been an invention of a single individual.
The keys are like those of a nyckelharpa. Both instruments have keys that are essentially mechanisations of what the fingers do on bowed lyres. If a violinist's bow runs out of hairs, rosin on the wood of the bow will still produce a sound and using a wheel instead is an obvious step to take.
I have been interested in the hurdy gurdy for some time. Then I saw and heard this one and I think it is perfect. Is there any possible way I might be able to purchase a set of plans so I could build one for myself. I'm about to retire and am looking for a rainy day hobby. I have the tools and both wood and metal working experience.
Thanks for sharing this video. Your instrument sounds very good. It looks similar but not identical to the one by Wilfrid Ulrich. Which is based on the MI74 from the Germaniches Nationalmusem Nürnberg.
You did a excellent job on the building of this musical instrument, I have heard this before Irish or Scottish music, am I correct? You have a real talent and could make this to sell but I would think it would be long process to make, .....do some work on your background and how you learned to make this instrument, do you make other?
I am interested in knowing the kind of strings as well. In some other plans I see, the strings alone would be over $100. Although I have heard of some builders that use materials like weed trimmer line. That would certainly keep the cost down.
>$100 in materials... PRICELESS amounts of labor and knowledge. I bow down to your expertise
Don't forget the tools!!
"> x" means more than x, not less
I'm sure the gurdy doesn't cost much in materials. It's mostly wood and a few metal parts. The real price is the expertise that goes into building one.
VERY complicated engineering and assembly.
EXACTLY. someone asked me how i figured $600 in labor was my estimate. lol. i probably even went to low!

Even a simple thing like building the wheel takes a lot of talent to get it right.

Oh my, I'm supper happy to see folks able to make a hurdy gurdy within a more accessible price. Absolutely beautiful sound, and great work!
I always come back to this. One of the best builds I've seen on UA-cam, amazing work.

You know how easy it is to get old furniture? There's probably your answer.
The workmanship on your hurdy gurdy shows you to be a mastercraftsman. I am in awe of your skills good sir.

$100 in material, $5,000 in time and expertise
artist and talented craftsman. All my admiration sir
Well done, well worth all the work it took to make, you join a thousand year old tradition of the Hurdy Gurdy!
I'm very impressed by the bends you were able to pull off
great sound and the instrument looks beautiful
Beautiful work, Sir and a fun song to demonstrate the beastie!
Well done!! Great sound! May you enjoy many hours of playing. Good job once again 👍👍👏👏👏👏👍👍
You are a real artist !!! Congratulations !!!
Wow, beautiful instrument and great playin! 🤙
That’s so awesome! Nice work.
Thats actually a well composed video! Good job! And on building such a lovely instrument too!
Something spooky about it. Like time travel.
The constant drone sound reminds me of a didgeridoo in a sense.
Incredible workmanship and sound, this instrument I would pay at least 800 for, but the amount of work would make it a multiple of that.
That's impressive, great job!
Oh please, what song was that?
Every song played on a hurdy gurdy sounds so haunting... I can't get enough!
What a beautiful instrument - visually and aurally
Thats absolutely wonderful.
Brilliant! Beautiful instrument and playing!
Dude just casually makes a fucking Hurdy Gurdy. What a legend.
Very nice sound indeed! Well done!
WOW! Beautiful in appearance and beautiful sound! Love it ...

Craftsmanship
Knowledge, experience, PATIENCE, and lots of trial and error.
How are you bending the pitch like that when you bend the 7th up to the tonic?
You can bend notes by pushing the keys in further, same thing as bending the strings on a guitar
