5 System of a Down riffs on hurdy gurdy
#hurdygurdy #systemofadown @systemofadown
Now I want to see a band consisting of one drummer, singer and three hurdy gurdiers playing metal.
You gotta coordinate that ideas path into reality.
The sheer amount of D R O N E in such a band would destroy the minds and ears of any would be listeners.

This shit was epic.
Some medieval bands do include hurdy gurdies, however the dominating instruments tend to be bagpipes (not the scottish type though). Those bands are metal too. You could try Saltatio Mortis i.e.

Speaking as an old music historian who just stumbled here . . . incredible new things happen when young adults come across old instruments, pick them up, and make their own music. Jazz was invented when young-adult freed slaves came across Civil War band instruments and invented a whole new music. This girl is getting sounds out of a very old instrument that seem impossible. No one my age could possibly be so inventive and creative with a Mediaeval instrument. We can only sit back and go, "Wow! Didn't see that one coming!"
I love it when someone takes an old instrument, or an instrument that is typically only played in a specific sort of way/genre, and they kick it up a notch, like what else can we do with this thing.
BUT, that is also a product of not being as familiar with those other traditional styles, since there often is variations in classical music and opera and whatnot that can easily fit right into heavy metal /deathcore music for example (and there actually is a lot of overlap). The drums are a massively supporting element here.
similar to bringing a fresh mind to an old problem or people from different fields of engineering adapting technologies from one another.
@@Siberius- One can only wonder what someone from a completely different culture and background could do.
Why'd you leave the hurdy gurdy upon the table?
Because you told me to
You wanted to
😂😂😂
Here you go create another hurdy gurdy
Why do they always send the hurdy gurdy?
Toxicity sounds like it was written for hurdy gurdy.
Aerials sounds good too
for real tho.
Might be because most of these were heavily inspired by Middle Eastern Makams (scales) or composed by Serj Tankian so probably with string quartets in mind. You also have to keep in mind that a lot of Medieval string instruments had lutes as their musical ancestor which in turn has the Arabic Oud as their ancestor which in turn has the Turkish Oud as it's predecesor. So if you compose a Middle Eastern/Arabic kinda tune and you play it on a Medieval European instrument it will probably sound like it was intended.

I've literally never heard a more fitting sound for this instrument in my life. System of a down songs were literally made for this thing.
Right?
It's fucking weird to think that tankian wouldn't have one in the band honestly
@Sumafetto SOAD takes inspiration from Armenian folk music
nirvana?
I actually sat and listened to the whole thing. I don't ever remember consciously wanting to finish a System of a Down song before. So, I think you're right. I think the difference is that you can still distinguish pitch and harmony with the hurdy gurdy.

My favorite SoaD Song, by far...
You can see if build up in her face it rules.
Is a bonafide banger.
The funny part is that this was the sound SOAD were going for on the non screamy metal bits, being heavily influenced by folk music
It really does sound so folk!
Especially toxicity
You know, now that you mention it, that fits really well with a lot of the songwriting
_So...._ kinda like what they did on Radio/Video?
The singer is Armenian and into political rights so I think his ancestry and culture are a big part of his writing
@@liamFTW101 lots of serj’s solo work is mainly Armenian folk sounding

I like to call it a medieval spacecraft
Now I'm waiting for Jack to explode from that shit. Hasn't happened.
LMAO...but yup it does
The tiny little flourishes she does in aerials sound so good. I mean it was all beautiful but aerials hit me.
It’s weird to think this was technically possible in the Eastern Roman Empire XD
*Oy bard, play us some of that System of a Down stuff!*
@Laviath I mean it still would be theoretically possible
Wiki; The hurdy-gurdy was first mentioned in the 10th century as the organistrum. It was then a church instrument played by two men, one fingering the keys, one turning the wheel. Secular, one-man forms, called symphonia, appeared in the 13th century.
Probably my number one time travel fantasy, going back to medieval times, form a RHCP band and entertain royalty a la Martin Lawrence in Black Knight

Toxicity and Arials are basically Baroque style songs and sound PERFECT on classical instruments. You can tell the members of System of a Down went to music school. Some of their best songs draw heavily from folk and classical.
they're not "baroque style" songs, it's just that there's arpeggios in them. play any arpeggio lines on classical instruments and that'll sound baroque, you don't need much music school for that.
btw the video is cool.
I don't think any of them went to music school. The folk elements are from their Armenian heritage.
@@danielbackhouse1199 I don't know about music school, but Serj sang in the opera before System.
@@elijahmann4962 Interesting, I'd not heard that before. Where did you find that out?
I think they just know their scales well is all.
1:05 is absolutely the best part and she knows it! I mean just look at her face. That grim yet contained smile, as to not come across as too pop-off'ish. The way she releases and then grabs back on to the handle, foretelling to the AMAZING sound that's about to be played. This instrument adds an organic vibrato-like quality to this bit of Holy Mountains which makes it even better that the original.
I must have rewatched it some 10 times before finally trying to put my impressions into words and I'm still 100% certain I failed. I just cannot believe how much I love this.
Yeah that smile gets me every time. Would love a full version of Holy Mountains (and Toxicity & Aerials).
Well I think you captured it quite well. She definitely knew what was about to happen and I agree, 1:05 to 1:16 is perfect for hurdy gurdy.
The world definitely needs more metal hurdy gurdy.
And bagpipes. They go surprisingly well with power metal.
SOAD is closer to light metal than anything, i would personally like to see someone try to play some deathcore on hurdy gurdy
@@zichithefox4781 may i recommend the band Saltatio Mortis to both you and Justin? They us many medieval and otherwise interesting instruments like the hurdy-gurdy, bag pipes and in some songs even the didgeridoo. They're a german medieval-rock band

oh man if she did a collab with alestorm for 1741 or something, that would be amazing.
Why does this work? This is excellent! Hearing them worked out on the hurdy-gurdy makes complete sense, especially when you consider that, when stripped down to bare, SOAD tunes really do sound like medieval folk tunes, however weirdly disjointed they may have been. Could you imagine SOAD having a guest hurdy-gurdy player on their next record or tour (whenever THAT may be)?
If you hear these songs now, it's weird they don't actually have a hurdy gurdy in them.

Holy mountains please
I love how serious she looks, like she's not playing some absolute bangers on the most ridiculous instrument ever.
@Morgan Oates bro please it's a cool instrument but it looks and sounds like someone smashed a violin, an accordion, a stylophone and a synthesizer into eachother and this came out of it. Even a theremin is less ridiculous.
@ Cynical Moe: I hope you are being cynical here, but if not you are very wrong about the Theremin! Unlike the hurdy gurdy (or the guitar for that matter) you need to intonate on a theremin like on a violin, but unlike the violin you have nothing to hold on to.
But I get where you are coming from. Ironically, because the theremin is so difficult to master, there are more people just flapping their hands using it for weird effect than actual players...and sadly the general population then thinks this is how the instrument is played.
Both instruments require a lot of effort to do it right. It is easy to play a simple melody on the gurdy, but to play it well takes years of practice. On a theremin you will need to intonate in the air, which is much more difficult to do than on a violin. Source: I am a hurdy gurdy and former viola player who tried to learn the theremin.
1:55 Gurdy slide frickin awesome!
