Shawn, I won't claim to have watched every single one of your "My Self Reliance" videos, but it is certainly north of 85% of them. It might even be higher than that. That episode was, hands down, the best single episode you have done to date. It had everything. A brief explanation from you at the beginning about what you were going to do. You cut down the tree and got it out of the woods. Some safety tips, then off the log was being dragged. You cut it up into lumber with just the right amount of time spent on it. The bit with the termites/insects was perhaps the *only* part which could have used a little discussion with the audience again, but never mind. It looked a little more ominous and even added a little tension with you bringing the boards in and then looking at them more closely. You glued the boards together and got the door finished and installed! Then some great footage of the wilderness, blowing snow (the white out was great) and a montage featuring both a worm's eye view and drone's eye views of white tailed deer, the creek, water, Maximum CANADA™. Music was great and editing was very well done. This episode had it all. I have to strain to pick holes or suggest my expectations weren't met at any point. It was long but didn't feel long. It was the PERFECT length. You nailed this one and stuck the landing. Gold Star from the teacher; take a bow.
Mr. James! I have been a fan since I first saw your complete (first) cabin build in late 2018. Ever since then, I always make it a point to watch whatever you release in this channel. Your videos have helped me through some of my worst nights and bouts of depression and anxiety and I will always be thankful. Thank you for sharing parts of your life with us Shawn.

Greetings from Liberia, West Africa. That workshop may last more than three hundred years because of how solid you are building it. I truly anticipate that the new cabin Will be as solid. I remember you suggesting that you may have changed something on the cabin if you had a chance, this might be the chance to inspire us around the world. My congratulations and my greetings to your beloved wife. Thanks Shawn!
Now did you see that folks, I had myself a snow bath and was a happy doggie and what happens I follow Dad into the tree line and he thumps a log and the snow and ice from above drops on me, right where I considered myself all clean and respectable - see this Dad of mine, no consideration for his four legged friend but I forgive him as I did manage to find one of my missing toys. So not a bad few days all things considered and now he has built a proper door, so wildlife cannot visit and stay out of the bad weather, as I'm sure I smelt Squirrel on the wind. Well that is it for this video so remember give Dad a big thumbs up and consider subscribing if you have not already, as I hear him say its all about the algorithm's whatever they are - I'm just a dog as you well know - so Woof Woof ....
Mr. James , your video keep me company when I go with my father during dialysis. You keep me at peace with all of your content. Thank your hardwork. God bless you all
I was wishing I had that little pot belly stove in my apartment when it went down to 1-degree F in north Texas. No heat, no water no lights. Lots and lots of old quilts and comforters. 🥶
Hi Shawn just have to speak up and say, and I don't often usu. someone else has already said it much better than I could! I'm a 65 y/o grandma and I love watching your channel, every time I think I've watched them all I find one that I missed! I wish a lot of younger people would watch and be inspired to do what you are doing, I also think you would make a great mentor, you seem to be very kind, your def hard working and are able to articulate without being too technical so that even someone who has never done anything more than walk in the woods, be able to understand, if not how, what you are doing and then think oh! that's how its done. God Bless and just keep on doing you!
You can see again and again with what simplicity and rationality he does his work in the forest to make a door. I have also seen with great satisfaction in his videos over the last few years that he has his best friend next to him, and is not alone. This harmony between the two is a wonderful thing. Good luck Pierre
The scenery is beautiful, the windblown snow is penetrating, the powerful water is intimidating yet calming, almost spiritual. And the drone work adds a whole new dimension to this experience. I love watching Shawn work to complete his dreams yet.... I sometimes find myself watching Cali in the background and coaching her to where her ball is hidden in the snow. Thank you Shawn for this weekly dose of natural beauty that fuels me until the next video. God Bless you and your family.!!!
I am a Caribbean Lady and I must say I am enjoying all your videos, especially in this cold snowy weather here in Texas... Just watching helps me survive ... Smile. But i must admit cant wait for warm weather as itching for my first garden here in Texas. Hubby is out in yard among the ice /snow and communing with birds either eating hawthorn berries or trying to get warm in the sun that came out today .. I am trying to warm up as been out taking photos of the birds . Ninette Bird- The Caribbean Wife
Wow, I didn't realize these videos come in 2160p. On my 5k Retina Mac the detail in the nature scenes are incredible. I can see individual pine needles on a tree that is 50ft away. The music, the cinematography is awesome! It puts me in a deep state of calm. So therapeutic. Shawn, you should definitely get an award for your great videos.
When I saw, that I have 59 wonderful minutes ahead of me, the first thing that came into my mind was Chef John's ... "And as alwaaaays, enjoooooy!" Thank you so much for sharing. Love and best wishes from Iran.
@My Self Reliance very impressed with that slanted cut for where the 2 doors meet. I've never seen that before , but I could immediately see all the benefits the minute I saw what you were doing 👏👏👏👏👏Another brilliant hr of sharing one man's incredible life choices to fulfil his dreams and yet maintain his marriage and his family !!!! KUDOS to you Shawn, Mrs J, 2 daughters and oh course the most famous wilderness dog .... Cali 😂👏👏
Perfect watch to end the week here Texas. We even reached subzero a couple nights. I used some things I learned watching you to build fires for us. That and our three pups probably saved everything for my wife and I. Power was out for 60 hours but we ate hot meals and had coffee on most of the time. Thanks.
Glad you had a fire and hot drink and food to warm you up. As a northerner I advise wearing layers and not too tight. Dry socks are very important as once your feet get cold the rest of you very quickly gets cold too. Having a change of gloves is great as you can dry one pair while wearing the other pair. Having several gallons of water on hand so that you can have drinking water and flush toilets is helpful also. I hope that your Spring is lush and green and that your Summer and Fall are drought free. You deserve it.
I had a fireplace at a home in the past, and now have two and a wood burning stove. I always have preferred a charcoal/wood grill to a gas one. And with all that, I can’t start a fire! I try everything...paper, leaves, twigs, cardboard...it is flat out amazing to me to watch Shawn get a fire going from just a magnesium spark, lol. I now use the fire starters that have wax infused with something that stinks like a chemical, so congratulations for your fire starting successes!
Once again, you transport us into a world, so few of us can experience. What a beautiful piece of land you have and how peaceful it is. Shawn, you are keeping me sane with your incredible photography and skills. Love the Dutch Door. As always, perfect. Thank you.
So today I started my day with absolute beauty, peace and tranquility with Mother Nature in her finest winter glory. Glorious scenery, an extremely hard-working man and a relentless pup. Thank you so much for the beautiful drone scenes and all of the hard work that goes into making these videos. I am grateful to you and your wife for the time it takes to make these videos absolutely breathtaking!
Breathtaking nature scenes. And oh, how I absolutely love the sound of crunching snow, and the crisp, cracking, snapping, as trees fall! Add Cali, and Shawn/his amazing knowledge and skills to that, and it's a better than very good day!🥰🙀
Fabby in every respect. It fascinates me that UA-cam home made films are so much more engaging than mega budget films. Must be something to do with the filmmaker’s commitment to a chosen path through life. Beautiful.
Why is a dutch door project video so beautifully captivating when it pales in magnitude compared to the genius involved in the big picture of planning the construction of the cabin step by step, measuring and cutting so spot on, architectural planning, cinema photography, editing, cooking, gardening, knowledge of the woods and nature. Plus being articulate in conveying philosophical thought. I believe a dog's temperament and demeanor are a reflection of its master's. Thank you for all that you give us.
Shawn, I have even more respect for you and what you are accomplishing after what we just went through here in Texas. Thank You for sharing your journey!
Your exceptional recording of nature, the way you show your patch of Canada, tells me more about your love for your environment, your home, than any words you could ever utter. I may be an Aussie but I am loving Canada too thanks to you and your channel.
I think this is a much better location for your new cabin. Very beautiful scenery and the stream is out of this world. Having a goofy neighbor is just what you needed to get a much better location.
With all the turmoil going on in the world, you have reminded us of the beauty, peace and oneness with mother earth, some of us have forgotten we need. Thank you Sir for sharing your adventures with the world. You're amazing.
LOVE that Banjo so much it puts one in the perfect watching mood right away ... love it best when it's the long version too ... add a night star shot and I'm in heaven ;)
that looks to be a better drag line cone ... much firmer ... should allow the logs to ride up easier now for sure ... . if it ever breks and you happen to have a skidoo engine cover that should work too ... nice slope firm fiberglass ... some hinges to attach to ... etc be a decent make shift cone
Natural scenes equal of anything on National Geographic TV. No wonder that footage and the narratives of you and Cali are an emotional godsend to people in need. Keep up the great work.
When I wake to 6” left from a snowstorm, my first thought is shoveling, icy roads, delays. Your video reminds me of the beauty and quiet of snow, birds, deer. You + Cali on a new path.
The way you work reminds me of the way my beloved stepdad would work. Steady and with purpose and quality of outcome. Thank you for your program. It's made my heart light with wonderful memories of our farm when we were first there
You have captured the truest beauty of winter I have ever seen. You are a master videographer and builder from scratch. DANG, you are GOOD👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️👍
I grew up this way on a small farm in the 1960s and 70s. It was always forest work in the winter to get wood for the stove and fireplace then also to cut planks from the trees in the sawmill. We always dried the planks over the summer and first chopped the wood and let it dry. It was a lot of work. I later educated myself and became a forest worker for some years. At that time we also had a lot of snow in the winters. We just cut branches with the chainsaw very close to the tree so there was no part sticking out. Because if you have small parts of the branches left they function as an anchor when you try to move the log and it makes it much more difficult. It is also less damage to the wood with a chainsaw than with an axe and that is good if you are going to make planks. But that is what we did. You should also use more protection, especially for the ears. I enjoy watching your videos and remember the struggle it was to live like that even if I am in Northern Europe,
What a wonderful way to start the weekend off. Thanks so much. Just wish I could help you with your work, everytime I watch you work I feel like I should get up and help. And honestly, it would be a pleasure. You guys take care, stay warm and God Bless 👍❤️
Shawn, do you know how blessed you are to live in the place you do? Do you realize that many of us would love to be able to live in the place you do? The beauty, the life, nature at its finest and YOU my friend, you captured it in a way that brings tears to the eyes...thank you, from and old lady stuck in her house in Georgia...thank you for this.

Boris Majetić Croatia is my favorite place I have visited in all of the world. I have traveled a lot, the people of Croatia are the friendliest and wanting to interact with outsiders, I have found. My first night in Split I ran across an old Russian bar. They spoke no English and I spoke no Russian but we managed to become friends and I returned every night on my way back to my hotel. I now hear it’s becoming too touristy but can understand why, beautiful country and people.
I think most of my photos in winter in the bush have sold the best in local shops. Something about the quiet peacefulness even at freezing temperatures. No bugs no Bears just a restful vista. Thanks again!
I want you to know about how important your videos are to my mother in law, age 99 in April! She is recently bed ridden and has very few outlets during the winter weather other than watching programs. We are watching, binging, rewatching and loving them all. We love Callie, and our mouths water at the frying pan scenes. Keep on trucking! Watching from Maine.
♥ Shawn.... The whole door thing was amazing!! But, seriously 😱 the footage at the end of the storm blowing in and blowing the snow off the trees. And the shots of the rivers and snow and streams and deer... 😍😍😱😳🤣🙂☺ I was sitting here in awe and then the tears came. Beautiful my friend... Simply breathtaking!!
SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU AND CALI ARE SAFE FROM THIS STRANGE HARD WEATHER! AND YOUR WIFE AND DAUGHTERS, I HOPE 🤞🏽
👍🥶👍
In Ontario this weather is normal, hope you get through it ok
I was thinking about it being Worse where ShawnJames is at, because of how devastating it was for Us, here in the States.
🤷♀️
@@dereckcensner8439 The same here in Minnesota. If you live in the north it gets cold!
It's good to see that, even when you're busy, you can take a few seconds to make your dog's day!
The man can turn a rotting tree into a simply beautiful door, and then take you for a stunning visual ride. I am once again amazed.
Brother that was one for books , who ever was flying the drone .. bravo! Alot of beauty on every scale.
👍👍👍
Mr. James , your video keep me company when I go with my father during dialysis. You keep me at peace with all of your content. Thank your hardwork. God bless you all
He could single handedly save Texas.
Texas doesn't need saving, the rest of the country ....
@@earthangel8730 yeah, indeed. that is why I'm writing in all caps
I was wishing I had that little pot belly stove in my apartment when it went down to 1-degree F in north Texas. No heat, no water no lights. Lots and lots of old quilts and comforters. 🥶
Well said!
😆 Yes he certainly could
Hi Shawn just have to speak up and say, and I don't often usu. someone else has already said it much better than I could!
Im Dutch, i approve this video, groeten vanuit holland!
Hello Holland! What a beautiful country! Greetings from south Florida!🇺🇸
Haha
Groetjes terug! 😁
You can see again and again with what simplicity and rationality he does his work in the forest to make a door. I have also seen with great satisfaction in his videos over the last few years that he has his best friend next to him, and is not alone. This harmony between the two is a wonderful thing. Good luck Pierre
You are the most consistent, hard-working guy I know. It’s such a joy to watch you create!
I love that you show the whole process...from standing tree in the forest to door on the cabin. Thank you, Shawn.
The last few mins. are the best in the episode, this untouched nature is just great.
Yes, with Cali as the icing on the cake. Such a good girl.
Cali 😂👏👏
I thought of that slanted cut too. Keep the air from going through better than a flat cut, egh!
Perfect watch to end the week here Texas. We even reached subzero a couple nights. I used some things I learned watching you to build fires for us. That and our three pups probably saved everything for my wife and I. Power was out for 60 hours but we ate hot meals and had coffee on most of the time. Thanks.
Now that's empowering. Way to put it into practice. Well done Smokie.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen what Cali eats every day?? Boundless energy, such a healthy, beautiful dog!
I always ask me the same..
What does she eat?
I would like to offer it to my dog as well 🐶🌾🍁🍂🌼
Mhhhhh! Glove on a stick. Now that is a tasty meal if I ever seen one.
Chewy yet filling! Make mine medium rare!
Cutting the door in half by hand saw at 45 degree's now that is a skill 👍
YES!
That music into is so wonderful to hear!
👍💗👍
With all the problematic we are living in the world, watch your video is refreshing and inspirational. Thank you
Breathtaking nature scenes. And oh, how I absolutely love the sound of crunching snow, and the crisp, cracking, snapping, as trees fall! Add Cali, and Shawn/his amazing knowledge and skills to that, and it's a better than very good day!🥰🙀
That was an amazing job. The door with two parts is fantastic.
I enjoyed this video more than a movie, because every thing are reality.
Thanks Shawn!
I just love watching Cali such a pretty dog. The scenery is beautiful 😍
Fabby in every respect. It fascinates me that UA-cam home made films are so much more engaging than mega budget films. Must be something to do with the filmmaker’s commitment to a chosen path through life. Beautiful.
I never knew the simple joy from seeing you making a new door Shawn 🏕🇨🇦
Brilliant.
So beautifully put together Shawn. Every second is something not to be missed .I just love your channel .thank you ,thank you, thank you .
Perfect video for before bed. Serenity. Thank you again.
Shawn, I have even more respect for you and what you are accomplishing after what we just went through here in Texas. Thank You for sharing your journey!
👍👍👍👍
May you have a glorious Spring and a drought free Summer and Fall. You have earned it.
Stay warm Texas. It's going to be alright.
Speechless. I watched it on my big screen with surround sound.
You demonstrate that there is no limit to what man is capable of.
All I see is unbelievable back breaking work, yet it's so relaxing...
I second the long version comment!
It's made my heart light with wonderful memories of our farm when we were first there
Love that nose cone for pulling the logs. Never seen that before. It must make a huge difference!
You have captured the truest beauty of winter I have ever seen. You are a master videographer and builder from scratch. DANG, you are GOOD👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️👍
The video quality is top notch, i enjoy watching it
I grew up this way on a small farm in the 1960s and 70s.
I enjoy watching your videos and remember the struggle it was to live like that even if I am in Northern Europe,
An hour! Woohoo! Magnificent Shawn!
Thank you for sanity in this mad world💕💕💕
I 100% approve this door as a Dutch - great work Shawn!!! Much love from Holland 🇳🇱
Cali is such a willing 'helper.' She always has enthusiasm, serenity, and boundless energy (maybe bounding energy?)
I'm just imagining the smell of those fresh cut pine boards! Oh my god I'd be in heaven!
I'm Anthony in Hamburg Germany
In so many ways, I can only say, having seen most episodes, "my self reliance" is
incredibly moving - (I mean to tars)
I would also like to compliment you on your film and editing skills which, after over
60 years in the "biz" .I can only say retpect; respect.
Thamk you
Wow- 😍 my ENTIRE body is sore watching him move these trees around like its nothing. All his videos are so beautiful I can let em play over and over-
I know!! I shoveled the snow for 5 minutes and got a huge blister on my hand. How does he do it?
Been watching you for over a year sorry that you had to start over but you're a real inspiration for lots of people I'm about to same age as you but fighting diabetes bad living vicariously through your videos helps me God bless you
Your nature footage at the end is National Geographic-worthy my friend.
Loved these videos and his deternation beside all he share .I am 82 and enjoyed his work
Can't wait to see a new video!! Grettings from Europe-Croatia Shawn!!👍👍❄❄❄❄
That intro music Shawn!!! I've been waiting ALL DAY UK time. 😆 Cabin life!
I watch all your shows. Thank you for airing this You have been number once since the beginning. It's all great.
Ty so much for the amazing work.
🤗🤗🤗hugs for you and Cali.
Shawn , I’ve been checking all week for your vedeo, it’s finally here , thank you so much!! I know how cold it’s been up by your way and I’m sure this is the reason why we haven’t heard from you. Thank you Shawn and Cali , stay warm 😃
Lord Byron completes a beautiful episode. So many look forward to your landscapes, ;labor, music and now, poetry. Thank you.
What you do and how you do it are most inspirational! Also, standing dead trees hosts more life than a living tree.
Best 59 minutes of this year on YT. One of the first 500 subs, still here closing in on 2 million. You've got the 'magic' to keep this channel growing.
Great job on the door and the video! I got a kick out of Cali helping you with the tree! What an awesome life she has! Thanks for the update. As always you made Friday special.
You Sir have set the excellence bar very high for other UA-camrs .
Just amazing from start to finish !
As being Dutch, I never knew that was called a Dutch door ! And love the bird pictures 💞
What this guy does with a dead tree and one pair of 50 year old hands is a wonder to behold. What he does with a stationary video camera in the wilderness is another. It's all good. Really good.
Wow. Door, scenery, landscape, Cali, drone shots. Great job Shawn.
I remember visiting my future husband's family in the Chequamegon National Forest in upper Wisconsin years ago, and I kept hearing cars coming up the road, but they never went by. It was just the wind in the trees. I heard that too in your video! Such memories 38 years ago!
Having just got rid of our snow 🏴 I can’t believe how much I’m enjoying you in yours ❄️🌨👍
Thank you Shawn and Callie for the fabulous video. I look forward to each and every one. Watching you and Callie enjoy life makes my days brighter and more bearable. God Bless.
Friday night relaxing. Take care!
I have never seen someone work as hard as you do but it is all worth it in the end.
You could build you a wood box in your spring. They use to keep milk, butter, meat cool that way. Cold spring water acted like a cold refrigetator.

Hi Sean & to All Fellow Commenters: I consider myself a writer, published in a a few small way (for the moment) & My oh my that Teacher said everything I was thinking, how Talented Sean is, how creative & just how damn good with building things & working with his hands he is, beautiful to see, truly!!!
