How to wire a PA button to a Burglar alarm

  • In this video a PA button (personal attack button) is wired into a Optima burglar alarm. Once the button is activated the circuit is opened and the alarm will sound until the button is reset and the burglar alarm is reset. It is possible to wire more than one PA button to the one alarm system to do this simply wire the buttons in series (as you would do with the tamper circuit)

    Thanks so much. I am a typical male who would of just not read the instructions properly on installing a panic button. I definitely would of put the wire green on green and yellow on yellow. After watching you video I am confident to now add some panic buttons 🆘 around my house. 👍

    I used to press these when I was a kid, the chaos it used to cause, ah the good times.

    The reed switch opens circuit (i inspected mine today, exact same model), just like a door contact does. That's why there's a link in the PA circuit.

    Hi mr handyman. I would like to say your videos are great. Saved me hundreds of pounds following your videos.
    Can I ask if I was to add more than 1 pa button to my system would I wire the blue and white in a loop like the tamper wires or in series?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  9 років тому

      Yes, if you add more than one PA button you wire them in a loop just like the tamper circuit, which is known as wiring them in series.

    I need to disable one of these for a room renovation. I've no use for it. Can I just cut the wires, put electrical tape on the ends and then bury the wire under the carpet? I'm trying to avoid tracing the wire under a large stretch of carpet and opening the alarm box.

    Never fit a PA button with the button facing upwards! They can sit there for years without getting used, and this can lead to a build up of grime between the housing and the button which can render the button useless when you do go to use it. Always fit the unit so that the button is either to the side, or underneath. Look at BS 4737.

      You would think they would include that in the instructions, wouldn't you.

    You could use a block connector instead of soldering.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  9 років тому

      Yes you could but they take up a lot of room in the panel, especially if all 8 zones are used.

    Sorry, I only wired it as a demo. It has now been removed as I did not need a PA button as the kids would probably eventually press it in ;-)

      ***** Shame, I was getting ready for it to be pressed but the bell box will start screaming for 5-10 minutes. My friends alarm did that, I only moved the P.A button to the side as it was in the way and it hit the wall (not very hard) and it set the alarm of we put the code in and the outside bell box didnt shut up until after 5-10 minutes.

      With the optima panel you might have to press the reset button, which is the X after entering your alarm number.

      I dont have the same alarm as you anymore as the circuit broke. I have now got a new panel but its called Paragon E by Pyronix

      ***** Does the P.A need the tamper circuit wiring in

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  9 років тому

      james murphy
      No, it does bot have to be wired in but then there is a chance someone will tamper with the circuit and prevent it from ever working.

    It might be a daft question but does the alarm have to be set for the PA to work? It connects like a magnetic door contact and we can open our doors without triggering the alarm when it's not set.
    We never set our alarm when we go to bed. If the alarm is not set, would the PA still operate if we pressed it in the middle of the night after hearing someone downstairs?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  2 роки тому

      Yes, the PA button will work all the time, regardless of whether the alarm is set or not 👍

    would you use a 3 amp fuse in the spur? also does it matter what colours you use as long as it is the same at the alarm panel and the application end?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  9 років тому +1

      Yes 3amp fuse in the spur.
      You can use any colours you like as long as they match at both ends.

      I never use shock sensors, as they used to give too many false alarms (they might have improved them since)

      Just wire them in series and you will be fine. If you are not sure, just search Google for "series wiring"

    Which zone lights up when the PA button us pressed?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  2 роки тому

      Not sure, I don’t think a single zone will illuminate, perhaps they all illuminate. The PA button will trigger the alarm, regardless of whether the alarm is set or not.

    How can I disable this alarm without the code? Just bought a new property and spent a fun 30 minutes with it going off !

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  2 роки тому

      To diable an alarm, you can switch the power off to the alarm (you might have to remove a fuse from a fused connection unit), then unplug the battery in the alarm panel. The outside bell box might sound for 20 minutes (until the battery in the bell box is flat).
