PRO TIP: Tomato bread is THE BASE FOR EVERY SANDWICH in catalonia, as mayonnaise is for americans. Instead of spreading mayo on a sandwich, we rub in in tomato, drizzle olive oil, and then we fill it with ham, cheese, bacon, chicken whatever a sandwich can be filled with.
PD. In catalonia we rub the tomato on the bread, not pulp it. They sell a specific variety of tomato (tomàquet de penjar) that rubs very very well leaving only a really thin skin behind. However, the method shown here is used in many restaurants bc it accepts all types of tomato and is more tomato forward to eat it as a tapa.
I learned to make something similar to this when I was in france, come to think of it, the person that showed me was originally from catalunya. The main difference was instead of grating the tomato pulp, you just rubbed the half tomato right against the warm toasted bread
Yes!
That’s the authentic way Spaniards do it.
Yes Yes, don't grate and spoon on, scrub the tomatoes directly into the toasted bread (optionally after scrubbing in garlic). Then drizzle olive oil on top, (optionally finish with tiny sprinle of salt, Kosher is good here). That's what we learned living in Barcelona for almost 3 years. Ideal result is rustic, not neat. Crispy bread tears the tomatoes, and the tomatoes soak and soften a small layer at the top of the toast. Mmmmm!!
Wonderful recipe! In Barcelona you just rub the garlic and tomato against the bread, then drizzle the olive oil and salt on top... voila
Yes!
Yep inauthentic prep.
Isn't that what they did, though?
@@Helpful_Corn No! Pay attention. They did the tomato all wrong.
My father was from Barcelona. I grew up eating this all the time. I haven't had this in such a long time, and now I'm craving it.
My Spanish friend introduced me to “tumaca”, it’s made of shredded tomato, fresh garlic (I microplane it), salt, pepper, and olive oil- whisked together and the tomato juice and olive oil seem to emulsify into a delicious velvety sauce/dip for toasted bread. Simple, bright, and delicious!
What a great way to use up leftover tomatoes and bread! So simple, quick, and easy👍.
Can’t wait to try this when our local farm here in CA starts harvesting their tomatoes.
"Just two ingredients" - Ciabatta bread and tomatoes. And salt. And garlic. And olive oil. And flake sea salt. 8-) Still, simple enough. I've made something very similar that was (if I recall correctly) presented as an update on french bread pizza. The use of a grater to get instant sauce from a fresh tomato was the big takeaway for me. I've also seen a version where you rub the cut tomato directly on the toasted bread. Delicious, and I'm glad to learn of its likely Catalan origins.
S is also good with sourdough bread and french baquet and semolina bread also I make a garlic spread by putting a cup or more of peeled garlic cloves in my ninja chopper with a couple of heaping tablespoons of country crock churn style marjarine and 1/4 cup or more of xtra virgin olive oil in the chopper and blend till a smooth paste like soft butter and I spread that on the bread for a nice bed for the sliced or grated tomatoes . U can add oregano and flake salt and it’s yummy
In Barcelona, you rub the tomato directly onto the bread. Also it needs to sit for a bit to let the tomato soak in.
This looks so good! I make something very similar, only difference is I add a little bit of oregano, some mozzarella, and sometimes a cured meat or something similar like pepperoni…it’s amazing!
While at it, mix MSG in the tomato pulp and sprinkle more MSG instead of salt on it - you would love the incredible taste and thank and love yourself even much better … xoxo :-)
@@damianrhea8875 Are you serious about the MSG-- or is that sarcasm? Using MSG in anything isn't really cooking. Nothing the poster listed was close to MSG, so I'm just trying to figure out your comment (seriously, sometimes I can miss the obvious stuff)... Take care!
Sounds good-- I'll have to try that as well (especially now that I've found a Mozarella with actual flavor), but my grandmother always said, when you first try a recipe, follow it exactly-- then tweak next time, if you wish. Of course, there are those lucky folks who can actually read ingredients and know what it will taste like and are brilliant at knowing what to add and how it will taste. Sadly, I am not of those people-- but it hasn't stopped me from trying! Take care!😊
Me too, but on a round crust, then I bake the whole thing for a few minutes to melt the cheese
@@juliastraus4273 Tomatoes have a lot of glutamates(like MSG) already in them. Not sure what you mean by the "isn't really cooking" comment? Powdered MSG is used in a lot of different cuisines to boost umami flavors. It's a completely natural ingredient.
Using some MSG in the dish from this video actually makes a lot of sense. It would be a great way to boost the natural umami present in tomatoes without changing the flavor profile of the dish.
Wow! That really does look good!
If only the tomatoes we can get at the grocery store would ripen to even half of what tomatoes in Spain, South of France and Italy taste like! An NJ of course!
Oh, the grocery store almost never has good enough tomatoes. I always recommend getting some from the farmer's market, or if you can grow your own.
Home grown tomatoes are amazing and you have the option to grow the same varieties that other countries prize. Tomatoes are native to the Americas so it’s not that they cannot grow deliciously. It’s that farmers mass produce crappy varieties bred to stand up to shipping.
Bread, tomato, salt, garlic, olive oil, and flake salt. That adds up to two ingredients, she says.
Just two ingregients!: Bread, two kinds of salt, tomatoes, garlic, and olive oil! Seriously though this was one of my favourite things to eat in Barcelona.
Seriously. They shouldn't say it's two ingredients...
In general salt, pepper, oil aren’t counted as they’re something you’d already have to cook with. Also garlic in this recipe is optional. So really it’s bread and tomatoes.
I’m definitely making this!💯👌🏾💗🙏🏾🍓
Im Catalan and this is pretty accurate! Bravo :)
Hola
Nice to meet u I'm Jessie I've been to Barcelona many times
I might add some melted cheese and maybe peppers or sausage... wait, that's pizza
And it'll be far better than any pizza bread you'd buy.
Put some Serrano ham on top as well.
I use anchovies!
Thank you!
Looks delicious. I would add some avocado slices. Yum!
just add $5 bills instead
This is NOT the American avocado toast … PLEASE ! And thank you.
Would you please do a test on the ninja creami?
Top that with some fresh chopped Basil and Cilantro,,,,,OOOOOOOH so good!
It would be great if ATK started selling their chef coats
Delicious 😋❤❤😊
I usually mix the olive oil in the tomato pulp. Easier.
I have to add garlic to the tomato I love garlic.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Pan de Payés y el tomate no se ralla, se restrega el pan.
What happened to two ingredients only?
Omg thank you for saying it in catalan! ❤
They have the funniest nativity set. The extra guy they have is hilarious the caganar (spelling)
You need to both sides of the bread
"it's just two ingedients"
It was actually 4.
Garlic, bread, tomatoes, olive oil.
@@cachecow And two types of salt
@@cachecow salt, and flaky salt

I must have lost interest during this boring recipe
I love pizza
You say it takes two ingredients but then you need 6 in total :'D
I mean it still is an easy recipe, but why the false claims?
The 2 ingredients claim is in the intro, it's not about the recipe.
But also, the 4 additional are Garlic (optional), Salt, Sea salt, Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Salt and EVOO are staples. IMO Flaky Sea salt is too so the optional garlic is really the only thing you need to make sure you have fresh.
nothing better than a "2 ingredient" recipe with 5 ingredients
I love a “two ingredient” recipe with six ingredients: bread, tomatoes, - oh and then -garlic, salt, olive oil, coarse grain sea salt! Use a fantastic olive oil.
I would have had to have coated a big glob of butter on each piece before toasting.
You really just want to rub the tomato not grating the bread. Also the Catalan breed is Pa de Pages
It’s literally just tomatoes and bread… doesn’t look good to me personally but seems like a lot of people enjoy it
Visca Catalunya!
This is just a working class bruschetta.
I'd recommend adding some fresh basil
Brushetta is Italian from the word "bruscare" meaning to toast. Catalan is a region in Spain.
This looks like it would go great with Raleqtambrobrét
People really aren’t this inept at cooking are they? This is literally just toast and tomatoes…
That’s 5 ingredients
Americans cannot count. Their insistence on using Imperial over Metric is evidence enough.
You should have your own cooking channel 😆 genius level IQ
Way too much tomato.
LOOKS LIKE EVERYDAY iTALIAN MADE BREAD- OIL & MATERS- BIG DEAL
Um.... host is going to have a heart attack
That was 4 ingredients and a very lackluster recipe for ATK
Milk Street would have done the exact same recipe resulting in anything but a lackluster demonstration. They recreate really simple dishes quite well, providing some history of the dish and where/when it's commonly eaten.
let's not and just say we did......................
Too messy.
First
I think that bread is a bit too burnt, blackened bread does not taste good.
What you mean to say is l: "I don't care for/ I dislike the flavor of any charring of toasted bread".
Many people, myself included, appreciate the bitterness a little char on toasted bread imparts to the experience of certain dishes.
@@yeahnaaa292 Blackened bread is very high in 'Acrylamide' a chemical that can form in some foods during high-temperature cooking, such as frying, roasting, and baking. In laboratory studies, acrylamide caused cancer in animals. The FDA is now conducting research to determine what levels of acrylamide in food pose a health risk to people. The FDA would advise people at higher risk of certain bowel cancers to avoid charred foods. So I would say my aversion to something that tastes like cancer is objective, not subjective, and what you meant to say is 'I'm wrong'.
@@yeahnaaa292 Oh, and the bread the hosts ate here is substantially less burnt than the thumbnail photo, which was blackened, so I think even the hosts know that level of burnt is unpalatable. (They made the thumbnail that for the color contrast, not for ideal taste)

Tomato topping is healthy but the thickness of the bread is just too much of carbs. 20% of that thickness is much healthier.
This is the worst cooking Channel
Disgusting 🤢
