The pan con tomate that we make here in our Spanish home in Guadalajara, and which is found in bars and restaurants all over Spain, is based on an old tradition in Cataluña. Originally known as ¨pa amb tomaquet¨, the Catalonian tradition was to take stale bread and rub it with raw garlic and wedges of tomato, then drizzle it with olive oil and sprinkle it lightly with salt. It is a delicious way to take advantage of day-old bread. It continues to be prepared this way all over Cataluna and many places in Spain.
The first time I tried this delicious tapa was on a beach in Calafell, Tarragona in Cataluña, with my friend Marta who had invited me to stay with her family for a week. My first night there, as the sun set, we prepared the tostas together with family and friends to accompany a beautiful barbecue of grilled sardines, chorizo, zucchini and peppers. I was in heaven. It was just the beginning of a memorable visit with warm conversations over one fresh, healthy, beautifully prepared meal after another.

I love this guy's enthusiasm over cooking and food!
I made this without ham. It tastes good !
I love it with just the sauce. So good!
Love that you had an authentic Español we could learn from!👏🏽
Love his accent - could listen for hours - and delicious recipe too!
Handsome gentleman and a healthy fantastic breakfast.
Had this breakfast this morning. So good! My dog begged for bits too! (he watches the videos with me!) I dribbled some lemon juice over it too.
I can’t wait to try this! Interesting about the ham 🙂
Thank you!
That Iberico is "at a higher level" is an understatement. It's the best ham I've ever had.
Wow, looks simple and delicious
It is really amazingly simple and super tasty!
Very simple and yet one of my favorite breakfast. Almost have it everyday! Thank you for sharing
Just got back form a trip to Spain and had many breakfasts in Madrid. I came looking for this recipe because it was so good. I'm so happy to hear it's so simple
I cannot wait to make this for breakfast tomorrow! Perhaps with a little manchego 😊
FANTASTIC explanation 🤗❤️❤️❤️
thank you!
Thank you for actually blending the garlic 😂 I never understood just rubbing it on the bread and I thought only Andalucians blended this ❤ 🇪🇸
Looks so delicious, wish tomatoes were in season where i am!
I agree, although, it isn't bad with winter tomatoes (definitely not as good, but still tasty)
Very easy and looks so inviting 😊
Can't wait to make this today! Perfect!
Enjoy!
I actually did makes this! So easy! I made it in my Nutribullet with one tomato, added some Sun Dried tomatoes (to help thicken it a bit as the Nutribullet tends to liquify, and added jarred, minced garlic. I only used a 1/4 cup olive oil as it was just for one person. I then ran to the store and bought the darkest prosciutto I could find. After getting home , I assembled the dish on the freshly backed and toasted sourdough and it was SO delicious! A great way to get a serving of vegetables (or fruit in this case) in one's diet. I'm having it again as it made a small bowl full but having with a fried egg too (in olive oil of course!).
Will try this in tomato season--looks delicious.
Add a splash of white wine vinegar and a bit of stale bread to that blender and you’ve got yourself a simple Salmorejo.
Yum! I could eat that everyday❤️❤️❤️
As a hispanic from Chicago we eat something similar for lunch with a bolillo or baguette where we add ham tomatoe avocado salt etc.. depends on your liking and we almost make it into a sandwich but its very similar ingredients minus the garlic and olive oil. almost between a mexican torta or spanish breakfast! ill be sure to add garlic and olive oil next time thanks!
Thank you
¡La comida se be mug burn y delicioso!
😊
I want to try with an egg
❤
Great video. Is one piece filling?
It is surprisingly filling, but most people would eat more than just one.
Looks delicious but I might just put a sliced boiled egg because I need protein but the ham sounds good too!
@@Michele.3142 It can have many different toppings. I was surprised at how delicious and simple this recipe is.
I messed it up. 😕 it came out soupy. I think I added too much olive oil? I will try it again for sure. It was still good 😊
I can only find the ibérico ham in Miami but I’m far from there. Anybody know where I can buy it in the Northeast USA?
Is this bread made with white flour?!
Yes. A few things about the flour used in the Mediterranean. It tends to be less processed and it isn't GMO. It also tends to be sourdough.
bread has to be whole grain for better health.
The bread in the Mediterranean tends to be white, but still fairly whole grain. It is also often sourdough.
*_I DID THIS BREAKFAST FOR 60 DAY AND LOST 20 LBS._*
I made it with prosciutto, came out better
That is how I often make it also!
Once you start departing from the original formula, a thin slice of German Blackforest Schinken can also work, I tell you..
you're damn right jamon iberico is at a higher level
I know you mean elevation but I do not lol
😜
I thought you were meant to grate the tomato…
Before the blender, there was the grating. Either is fine.
