Let's use together, for the first time, the big trommel harvester, Expectation sometimes are to high and I had to try how this "big beast" works to understand how to use in the best possible way.

From watching the video, I think you are correct that your bedding needs to be a little drier. Perhaps the littles getting stuck is why so many process the breeding bins so regularly before cocoons will hatch to prevent sticking. I'm interested to see your thoughts after you have used the trommel enough to be familiar with it.

Today I harvested some trays with dryer bedding and worked much better
Wow , now that's a trammel . That thing is huge. That should help you a lot and make sifting and sorting easier .

The moisture content of your bedding material going in to the trommel is critical it should have no more than 1 drop of water that comes out of it when you squeeze it with one hand, that way it separates and breaks apart easily inside the machine. What if you used 3 screen sizes layered together instead of just the 1? You have an inside cylinder/tube of 1/4 inch screen that is max length(say 6 feet), and then outside of that tube is 1/8th inch size screen but the tube isn't the same 6 feet it's a little shorter, and the 3rd screen is 1/16th and is the largest, it wraps around the outside of the other 2 tubes. The screens never touch there's a gap between them by using rods and wing nuts etc. but you could load everything in 1 tube that's spinning in the center, the worms would fall out the other end from the 1/4 inch tube into a collection container, the babies, cocoons, chunks, and uneaten food/bedding would fall through the 1/4 inch screen and onto the 1/8th where they'd further separate to another tray and then fall through to the 1/16th inch tube which only finished castings will fall through into a separate container or just let them fall onto the floor on a covered tarp and roll the machine away when finished running material to access the finished castings.1 machine will separate everything out with probably 98% efficiency and cut your work down.

This trommel is the "standard" for smaller farms, and I get this as is. I definitely will try to keep in mind your suggestions and see if I can improve productivity. Thank you again 💓

Thanks for sharing your experience with this trommel. You are just like me wanting to make sure every baby, every worm survives and multiplies. This definitely looks like a step up in production level over the Brockwood but you have raised some concerns about it. Have you found any ways to keep worms from sticking or save the babies in an easier fashion? I was thinking some sort of spray coating over the mesh might work? Would love to hear your thoughts on this after having it a year.
After a while the trommel will be coated with some dirt and this will prevent the worms to getting stuck. Is like a seasoning
Whoa you got the big boy. There's a company in Connecticut that is selling those refurbished / used. I inquired on them and they were a little more than I wanted to spend but they were kind enough to say that I could come down and use theirs anytime I wanted. Now that is an exceptional company. What a great investment, it will serve you well.
Mine is refurbished too, paid half than new one but still expensive
@@northeastworms Yes, even refurbished they are expensive. I'm really disappointed to hear that so many babies got stuck in the mesh. I didn't think that would happen with those big trommels. Do you think if you took some of the sifted castings and ran it through a second time it would push those babies through? It might be worth a try. I'm like you, I try to save everyone and that would make me crazy
@@connecticutwormsgardens actually I just talk with the manufacturer and he confirm me that will take some time before the metal will get some kind of natural.coat and the worms will not get stuck anymore

Very nice - congrats! As you also mentioned, I think that slightly dryer material would result in the worms sticking less. And if there were a slower rotation speed then fewer non-worm materials would roll up and over into the worm side of the divider 10:00 & 10:30 God bless you!
Yes, I think that dryer material will work better. With time I will understand how to use this thing in the best way
Just talk with the manufacturer and he confirm that take several times of use and the worms will not get stuck anymore
Besides dryness helping the material to tumble more freely, I bet there is also a sweet spot on the speed adjustment which will allow the large chunk materials to stay low & roll out the end - leaving only the damp/sticky worms to adhere to & ride up on the turning drum to get dropped into the worms-only tub
As you said, with some trial & error... combined with a little practice.. you will get the processes working perfectly very soon. Keep up the great work!
Ah.. perhaps the surface of the material just needs to get a bit _"seasoned"_ from use. Cool!
You'll learn how to improve your separation. I think you do need dryer material and feed slower. Manually breaking up the clumped castings would help.

Gaetano!! Awesomeness!! That is soooo cool !! How long before it pays for itself, do you think ? Because it's so new, maybe overtime, as the material goes through the sieve, it will "polish and smooth" the metal screens, so the babies won't get stuck as much?!?

I hope that he pays himself pretty soon because was a pretty "big" investment for a business of my size. I am pretty sure that with time I will understand how to use this beast. You right I need to print a sticker with my Smile LOL
Oh! I just remember another review of this same tumbler. He had the same problem,stuff gets stuck in the wire .worms too,So he noticed that if he tapped on the screen that most of it fell thru. He was experimenting with mounting a vibrator one the main frame to try and fix the problem. I have not seen what he came up with yet,Will update you if he actually solves it.

That big tumbler should have a speed adjustment , that might help . The one i plan on making will be more like the red machine you have. I think the vibrating back and forth would be easier on the worms than that tumbling and tossing up in the air several times like that. But maybe it would be a good machine for prepping what you use to make you bedding out of. I got access to free cow manure that is composted for about a year. but it has quite a bit of sand and pebbles in it . I have to sift it even before garden use. maybe that is why I get it free. Anyways thank you for this little up date on what you are doing.....I am expecting an e-mail or something when you start selling again right?? Or should I just be watching the web site. @@northeastworms No problem when ever you are ready I be waiting ..Out of all the people I have researched I like the care and the incite you do with your worms..Now that the weather is starting to warm a bit I can get out side to my table saw. Going to make 2 8foot by 2 foot breeder bin in the basement. Not sure what I think about the flow thru bins with all the rods in the bottom ? Figured I would just make them that way .Then if I don't like them I can just seal up the bottom with something breathable and do it the way I allways have. Later my friend,,, Bob

I actually sold the shifter. The trommel is completely a different planet if you go commercial and have serious quantity to sift
Perhaps a few days before harvesting you put some fruit on the top in a shallow pan with holes to get the majority of worms to vacate the material before it goes through the tromel, decreasing your casualties? The baby worms love heading to fruit, especially when it’s a few days old. For best results I suggest putting the fruit in a bin of bedding and having it aged even before you give it to the worms.

@@northeastworms with as many mortar mixing breeder bins as you have, I can't imagine you have the time to go through a couple days in advance and bait them all with fruit and then take those babies out. That's a lot of work. If you had five or 10 or even 20 bins it's doable but not on your current scale. I honestly think running dry material through it after the worms are stuck just might work
Hmmm! I am kinda confused. Was he trying to do it all ,,separating for worms or was he using it to separate just the castings. He is a smart guy I am sure he will figure it out. But I will not be buying one till he does..
@@TheWisendorf gaetano has three very large CFT bins and then about 150 mortar tray breeding bins. When the mortar tray bins are full of babies, he splits them in two by harvesting the castings and collecting the worms and putting the babies in one bin and the adults back into the original bin with all new bedding to repeat the process. So what you saw in the video was him dumping entire mortar trays into the trommel for the purpose of separating the castings from the worms. The worms are everything from adults, juveniles, wisps and cocoons. They're about $6,000 new or $3,700 used for the size he got. I won't ever be buying one.
@@connecticutwormsgardens I didn’t suggest that he do them all at the same time. I assume he harvests the trays and the CFTs in a rotation and based on his orders? So the least labor intensive and highest yield to keeping the worms is having giant, longer wedge type rows? The tromel would be pretty efficient to sift the material that’s very aged and nearly devoid of worms, capturing those larger bits that need to go another round, but it’s a very long process.
I am not the one there doing it,but I liked the red machine better...A little more hands on but seemed to me a more quality end result.
They are 2 different machine both with pros and cons

For large quantity, the trommel is definitely faster and more precise

I love that. Actually you are not far from the truth, I select and breed those worms in the last 12 months taking the fatter and healthiest ones

@@northeastworms Do you ever go fishing??? If you do I tell you a little trick I used to do... Hook the worm some where along the nose. Then I used a little incilin needle you shoot a little bit of air in side the worm . Makes them float.
No, I do not fish despite where I live fishing is a big thing and for that reason, in the new place that I have the space, I want to start to grow giant enc and start a fishing worms business for next year 2023
