I feel all of this 1000 percent. Everything you've said in this I feel exactly the same about.
I plan on getting a deluge partly because of you
Same, except for the part about having millions of streams on Spotify
What about "I'm Andrew Huang"?
Most people do.
First thing I thought when I read this title... I feel it too
Andrew: *makes a video about hating his voice*
Also Andrew: *records the most beautiful vocal takes for said video*
He has a terrible voice according to him
@an_아 fr!
Pure truth, when I hear him sing I feel calmness and relief!
Honestly if he hates his voice idk what to think of mine 😂. But love the takeaway from this video.
I could only wish to sing like that 🥲😮
Andrew: i dont like my voice, i dont think its good enough
Also andrew: *proceeds to give us one of his most legendary vocal takes of all time*
Clearly a case of imposter syndrome :D
But i totally get it
For guitars or synths or everything else you can just get whatever sound you want if you try hard or long enough but with vocals you sometimes just dont have a certain sounds and cant recreate it yourself and that feels bad honestly
Doesnt change how every persons voice is unique amazing and deserves to be heard
@@flower-fauna I believe you’re spot on. We as creatives have so many ideas for how we want to use our voice but when it comes down to it, our voice is distinct in all of its ranges and especially when you’re younger and don’t quite know your voice yet it’s hard to like it. Just takes years to write good songs that express your voice how you want. 😄
Jimmy Hendrix hated his voice too. It is fairly common.
Ya daaamn that falsetto

Bruh he’s hitting notes like this and people saying that his voice sucks?! Y’all trippin y’all must have COVID too bc yall haters taste is gone.
Bro ik im like man i wish my voice sounded like that! Lol
I love your comment
Agree. I admit, I do find his speaking voice a bit taxing on the ears sometimes, probably because of the nasal tone that he mentioned in the video, but I've never commented on it, cause who cares? But I like his singing voice. I wish I had a singing voice like that.
I feel this, as well. I get not liking one's own voice, but I've never felt his voice was anything other than appropriate for his music. Additionally, I've shown his music to countless friends and family and had people specifically comment on how much they love his voice, or how good his voice is. Anyone who says such things like "OMG stop singing your voice sucks" can f*** right off.
@@mikalkrall 100%.
Dude. "I don't like my voice", and then you rip out that awesome acoustic song with an absolute INCREDIBLE falsetto. The best thing with your singing is that it's YOUR voice, and no one could ever do it the way you do. Never stop, because it's beautiful. F the haters.
I was playing in a punk band and we're not good. People often told me that we suck right in my face. And after some time I found a reason for myself why we should keep playing even if we know that we are not the best band. I thought that maybe some kids in the crowd will think to themselves: "man this band sucks.. but they are on stage... Maybe I can do that too?.."
And maybe we can inspire someone to finally play some music.
punk died when punk bands started being good. every good punk band fucking sucks.
The whole appeal of punk is we all suck bet we’re gonna do it anyway

Well put 🫡
Andrew: I'm a middle school voice teacher and choir director. Arguably of the age range when people are most at risk to stop singing due to self consciousness and thinking they're no good, thinking their voice is bad, etc. This topic is of the utmost importance to all singers and especially educators - thank you so much. I will be showing this video to my classes when school resumes next week. I also tweeted this video out a few minutes ago. I hope many of my colleagues see it and spread the message. Sing anyway 💪
What an amazing and rare attitude for a music educator to have. Thank you for what you do!!
Awesome, my friend. Keep inspiring the youth!
+1 on this. Middle School music teacher in Brooklyn, will be doing the same.
I don't really like my singing voice for the most part and I definitely prefer to work with other vocalists. But I did find when my first child was born, just for me personally, it removed a lot of the apprehension I felt towards singing, just because babies don't care if you're in tune or technically proficient; you can see that connection just from the sound of your voice, and it doesn't matter if it's 'good.'
that's really wholesome :)
Love your stuff and the comment is very wholesome. Great to see you here
A lot of the "good"ness from singing comes from the engagement and emotion as well, so if you're feeling it often that could sound good to other people even if the technical bit might be lacking
Dude, I like your voice actually! Oreo song is forever ingrained in my brain thanks to it. Though it may not be what you would've wanna hear =)
Younger people watching this are fortunate to have a role model such as you Andrew 🙏
I’m serious when I say this Andrew but I’ve never related to a video so hard. Thank you for putting something out like this, it really made me feel like I’m not alone here.
Same same, I related so hard I astral projected out of my body, and to hear it from as phenomenal a musician as Andrew really did something!
BUT! Just out of curiosity I checked if you had any music and stuff and after listening to some of your stuff, subscribed, and turned on notifications, DON'T STOP SINGING MY DUDE! I bet you're a lot better than you think! I really liked your cover of Being Human, and your cover of Tsuki no Akari sounded really cool! I can tell you really like composing and arranging stuff, and as long as you're having fun, keep making the mouth sounds and good luck dude!

My dude starts out this video like "I hate my voice so do a lot of people i.e. my voice is bad," gets on the mic not 5 minutes later and has more sincerity and control than half of anything that makes Spotify's top 100. You've got a great voice dude.
I will be adding this video to my warmup routines every time I’m about to record myself singing, because this is EXACTLY what I needed to hear. I can’t stress how important it is to hear someone speak with positivity about navigating the same waters that I’ve been lost in. Thank you!
It's such a recent and unhealthy part of human existence: comparing ourselves to the best in the world. I'm trying to make music how most humans have: just making music without any worry about how we compare.
I relate strongly
THIS RIGHT HERE. It's way healthier to compare yourself to your past self. So you can be proud of each advance
We should stop comparing ourselves with others in every aspect, be it music, finance, talent, etc.
The moment external comparisons are allowed into the creative process is the moment you begin limiting yourself. Don't even compare to your past self. Be present.
Andrew: I hate my voice
Also Andrew: * proceeds to sing beautifully *
Jeez dude, I hadn't heard your voice in a long time, I was astounded by how good you sounded when you started singing. With control like that, I honestly couldn't care less about your 'nasal' tone, it's just you. I love it
When Andrew said "if I love my baby who's on the way as much as I already love this cute thing, well look out" I was just started smiling by myself thinking how sweet and then he yeeted the baby and I jumped off my chair shocked

Appreciate the idea of just accepting that you may not even like certain attributes about yourself, you don't HAVE to like them and celebrate them like you're in some Disney movie but you CAN accept that and push forward anyway.
I find it strange that you dislike your own singing voice; when I recorded my first *decent* single, which I sung as one of my characters, I deliberately formant shifted my voice to sound more like yours. That sweet, nasal tone was exactly what I was after.

My man! I love hearing your songs with vocals, they always fit right, and it's a good surprise when I'm expecting an instrumental and vocals pop in.
I feel you, man! Your voice sounds great. Thanks for sharing the mic shootout too. I like the 103 👌
Hey Andrew.
Thank you. I was a voice teacher in another life, and the most important thing I would tell my students is exactly what you express here.
Singing feels good.
There are scientific studies that we can get into about the whys this is, but the basic notion of it is that singing, and your voice is just a basic part of who we are as humans.
Thank you for continuing to be brave and facing your fears, and for giving voice to those who silence themselves or are otherwise silenced by circumstances outside of their control.
I also think it's fairly universal for anyone who sings to dislike their own voice, but that doesn't make it bad. It's usually because it's so different to the one we acoustically hear.
Anyway, what a fun demo of the mics! As you say, it's hard to describe sound, but if I had to I'd argue that the neumann mics both have an almost effervescent quality to them that the SM doesn't have. There is just simply more complexity to the sound you get out of the neumann's. (And that's all I will say because a producer I am not. XD)
Thank you again for sharing this video. Thank you thank you thank you. As an educator, this is the kind of video I would share with my students and I hope many others find the value in it.
To literally everyone out there that's afraid of what someone else will think: don't be. You are you, you are awesome, and don't let someone else that you know nothing about keep you from being the creative genius that you are, whatever that creativity may be.
Thank you for sharing, Andrew. It was quite moving to hear you express your fears. As a small independent musician myself, I struggle immensely with sharing my music with a wider audience because I am terrified of what people would think of my voice. So to hear a talented producer/vocalist as yourself having the same fears, actively overcoming them and continue making his dreams a reality, is so inspiring. Keep on making what you desire Andrew and you'll be remembered for your vision. I hope I can one day be there as well, but I am working on it slowly. All the best!
"Every voice has value"
I needed to hear this, been a fan of yours since way back when and absolutely love to see the evolution of your work and really enjoy hearing your work ethos and the way you approach your work, thank you for putting this out there
As a long time musician who has been trying to teach himself production the past few months, this video was exactly what I needed to see. I saw it while procrastinating working on my music, mostly because keeping the long term perspective is hard to hold on to when the short term is filled with music I am not yet proud of. I feel inspired to go push through my own doubt and to create the things I know I can eventually make. I so appreciate you being vulnerable about yourself in a hope to help others. Consider this person touched, moved, and inspired. Thank you Andrew.
i never thought anyone else felt the same way. andrew is my inspiration to keep going in my music.
Me listening with the speaker on my phone: Yes, I totally can hear the difference between the mics.

Heres a "hey Andrew, you should really keep singing" to counterweight the opposition.
Literally had no idea anyone didn't like your voice. I always remember that shot with Rob during one of the 1st of October videos where he's like "he's got such an amazing voice" to your engineer and everyone there is nodding vigorously. I have tried to sing recently and it's so hard. Well anyway this is just another message to say I think you have a great voice

About the mics:
Did a little "blind test" where I looked at the screen only when I liked the sound, and it's definitely the TLM 103 for this song. Mic preference changes based on song and singer, but for this song and for your vocals, the mid dip removed some mud and made for a brighter mix that really worked here. Love it.
I agree with you!
Agreed! I was genuinely shocked when he said that the mic feeds were unprocessed. All three sound great, but the TLM 103 sounds mixed and mastered (to my ears at least). Insane.

Andrew, I thought this was a really open, honest explanation confronting something that shouldn't have to be justified but at the same time is judged when you upload content. Such a positive message, it is so true, don't live in regret because of what others might say. The critics can be the destroyers of many great art.
Andrew, thank you so much for sharing this! I also love singing, even though I don't really like how my voice sounds. But I love singing more. And I enjoy so much listening to you sing. I always feel a bit jealous thinking that "man, I wish I could sing like Andrew". Thank you for being honest and authentic!
Honestly I don't know anyone who likes the sound of their own voice. I hate the sound of my voice, but it's not so much what your voice sounds like, it's just how you use it. And personally I think you use your voice amazingly.
Your song "Yours" was my top song on Spotify in 2019, purely because it was my morning alarm for almost the whole year. If someone can wake up to your voice every day and not hate you at the end of it your voice isn't that bad ❤️
"Yours" kicked at least three hectares of ass. The arrangement was something special too.
This is such a beautiful comment. ❤️
really appreciate you sharing this! I am old but like creating and singing.
I started making beats eight years ago after being scared make electronic music since I was a kid. I started to write/ put vocals on my instrumentals only a few months ago and it has become the single most freeing feeling I have discovered. Complete therapy on my different levels. Your voice is beautiful man, don't stop singing.
Ever!
A lot of people in the industry would say, that having a unique voice is more important than it sounding good or pleasant. There are a lot of very talented and good singers out there that are almost unrecognizable just by their voice on a record.
Your voice is unique and therefore recognizable, which means I'll listen to an Andrew Huang song and always know it's you expressing yourself. That's worth something.
Also, I personally will take a slightly nasal voice that's in pitch over an amazing singer, that's slightly off-pitch anytime!!
Good point, man! I think a lot of people are too caught up in making music that other people like instead of just enjoying the process!
Hello Andrew, I really enjoyed your course back in November and there’s one song where you started writing it from scratch playing the guitar, and I honestly thought where is this going? It wasn’t really appealing to listen to but then when you recorded your voice for the proper session… It sounded absolutely amazing. I was totally blown away and if anyone gets a chance to hear that song through your course I’m sure they would think differently about the quality of your voice. Cheers and I’m very glad you made this video.
Am I the only one who actually really likes Andrew’s talking voice?
His singing voice also has a really nice quality to it imo.
Remember folks, beauty is subjective, just because one person hates something doesn’t mean another person can’t love it.
Yes.
I love your voice. I listen to you sing or talk and it's just a pure pleasure.
I think my talking voice is bad - as if I was talking through a pillow, if you can imagine that. But I learned to accept it too and I know there are people who treat my voice as it was the most normal thing in the world! So this video is absolutely so worthwhile!
Wait there's people who don't like your voice? That's insane to me, I absolutely love it.
I don’t totally like my voice when singing either, but I do enjoy singing too.
I find your voice a good match for your music.
Seriously, don’t stop singing!
Ok but can we talk about how you killed it with the vocal performance in this song :O big ups for the vulnerability in this video, man!
I really like imperfections in the singing, because it makes the singing more "human". You are just a guy who is alone against the world and wants his voice to be heard, and I think this is what makes songwriting beautiful.
I was always impressed with your vocals. Id like to hear any of the haters vocals. Keep it up my man!
Lol
Love what you do - I especially love that you haven't used your platform in a way that compromises your artistic integrity. Thanks for the candor and self acceptance.

Yeah. I love my SM7B, but the Neumanns are really something else. I didn’t think there would be that much of a noticeable difference especially with YT compression
Just listening on my AirPods right now and I was surprised at how huge the difference was in feeling, even when I wasn’t paying much attention. Maybe the average person won’t consciously notice it, but they will consider it to be much more professional in a way that subconsciously influences how they feel about the song.
