Based on my experience in boat building, I highly, highly recommend you prime all the cedar and let it fully dry before you fiberglass to it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen bulkheads sprung from the glass when they came under stress that would not have happened had the wood been primed with epoxy or resin. It’s not that much more work to prime everything and then you will have absolute peace of mind. Just my two cents.
Agree. the unsaturated cedar will soak epoxy from the first layer of fiberglass living a dry Wood to fiber interface. There is no need to wait for full cure, just roll it on wait for 10 ,15 minutes re-wet dried up areas, and proceed with lamination.
Have to agree with all these comments. Definitely worthwhile to fully prime the timber before the first fibreglass layer. It’s the first & fundamental bonding between the 2 very different materials & will be structurally superior. Much less chance of separation. Only a few hours extra work, you’d be mad not to do it. You will never get a 2nd chance to do it. Also want to acknowledge the incredible craftsmanship & care you are both taking with your beautiful project.
I don't think I would have ever çommited so much of my allotted lifespan to such a project ɓut it's always a very personal thing I have the greatest admiration and respect for anyone who chooses to take this most individual decision.
Do you have to remind me that time is so ...precious. Next 2 years will fly just as fast if not faster. Love watching the build and family grow. Hello from Siesta Key Florida
A good friend of mine John Lewis from Dorset England built two large boats in his shed, and had a job, excellent wife and kids, sailed them across the pond, quality was unbelievable,I was in awe, I had forgotten people like you still existed! Good Man!
Fantastic Johan, your channel is a true inspiration to us all. The interior looks massive and we are positive the finished product will be a gem to cherish for a lifetime. Thank you!
😀😀👍👍❤❤ Thank you for all the very hard work. Please take your time with the build. 20 years from now a day or two will not make any difference!!! Vera will let you both rest for years while she captains the boat!
Another fascinating episode. So much meticulous work and planning is going into Ran 3, and I am so glad to be following along. I hope your family enjoyed the beach. Well deserved.
It's nice to see your videos are becoming more popular and view's increasing....The amount of effort and time making them. I hope you are rewarded...with spondoolies....
It lloks like Vera got better. Hope you do too Malin. Johan more great work on the inside of the hull. Lots and lots of laminating ahead again. Keep at it and hang in there!😎
You two are doing a heroic job!! I have a suggestion on your time-lapse video sections. Consider putting a title caption on screen to give viewers a perspective of the time involved; such as “five hours of sanding later” etc…
Great video always very interesting listening to Johan discuss his next move and then see the results . So far everything looks perfect it's going to be an amazing cruising boat I bet she'll be fast , steady and comfortable .
Love to see the episodes, sitting at island out side Skärhamn relaxing in the sun during making bbq. with a cold beer. Looking forward already for next Friday. You are so skilled. I am incredibly impressed of all three of you! I have never done a project as this big but I have only one small advice based on when reading the comments: Let it take time. It needs time and it will take time, as you already know and announced in the beginning of the project. Love your episodes, very, very impressed! Best wishes!
Have you considered using carbon fiber for your chainplates. Instead of relying on bolts to hold the rig, the chainplates are bonded to the fiberglass...all the cools kids are doing that now! Amazing work on the boar, great progress!
I use to do the canvas work for Peter little a man that has built some very historic wood sail boats. You have brought up many great memories working with him and just seeing someone make a freaking boat from nothing.
The build is looking really good and very interesting to watch 👍 As Johan mentioned in the video (just highlighting here for any others who might have missed it). Regarding temperature I would be careful of laminating when you have a steep rising temperature curve. This can cause air in the wood to expand out leaving air bubbles in the laminate (I believe sailing UMA may have had this issue a couple of videos ago with some of their laminations). For DIY projects (when having a large temperature curve) I would try and arrange the work, where possible, such that the lamination can be done in the afternoon/evening (falling temps) and prep work in the morning (As Johan is doing) Where a whole day of lamination is needed for the bigger jobs I would try to wet out/seal of the wood the previous afternoon first to reduce any air being pushed out during lamination, this also allows the contraction of any air to suck in the resin deeper into the wood. (I think of this as the poor mans vacuum bag 😄)
You are right about filling the holes. I used SS brads to hold things in place and they all were conduits for air bubbles. Very frustrating. I finally learned what you are doing- use the temperature changes to your advantage. It’s looking great!!
I am really enjoying watching your build. But watching you sanding sure makes me glad I am only building a 12’ long SCAMP sailboat. Best wishes for your continued success.
Fantastic build and lovely channel. Thank you for sharing! With the steel keel, if you go with two rudders on skegs, you wouldn't have to worry about anchoring too shallow and could dry out on low tides to work on the hull.
Great progress again this week Johan. Hope that Malin and Vera have recovered from their cold and fever? Just an idea, but it might be good if you might give a quick review of the design of Ran 3. For example, I can't now remember if you are going to have twin rudders. Think it might be helpful for newer subscribers who may not have watched from the beginning. Cheers Malcolm (from Jeanneau Owners)
Beautiful shots of gorgeous Sweden! Great work on the hull Johan. Your videos have a zen quality and your work ethic is amazing. All the best to you ❤️
Thanks for the videos, I really love watching the boat being built. I'm a patron member and I'll keep supporting you to the end. I really wish all three of you the very best, and I can't wait to see you sailing her around the world.
Another great episode, Johan. 🎉 🎉 Bummer the family was sick. Happens. 🙁 The prep is always the most time consuming….at least to me. Jet no great work was done without quality prep!! Pray all is better with the girls. See you next time. ✨🌊💨⛵️🏝️👙🌞✨
I felt bad for Johan when Vera came to tell him they’re going for a bike ride. I was thinking, “Don’t miss those moments!” But, then I was happy to see Dad and daughter on the beach at the end. It’s all about balance.
Employing someone is not the answer. You are doing a great job working alone gives a sense of satisfaction which is only explained by those who have done it. Creating is as good as cruising and you have done that it is a new chapter in life. This comes from a 77 year old who has done a ton of stuff stay to what makes you happy. Your progress is phenomal.
Thank you for another great video. I know I’ve mentioned this several times in the past year and a half, but why aren’t you getting some volunteers to help with some of the mundane chores. Even like someone just sweeping up and cleaning the hull as you work. I’m sure they would be willing volunteers to do this. Again, thank you for the wonderful video and the hard work you all are doing.
Johan, did you grow up around boat builders? I build boats out of metal and your work is so well thought out. You know way too many tricks to avoid issues to be a first time builder. Maybe I'm wrong, and you learned everything you needed from UA-cam? 😅 I'm very impressed on how solid and smoothly this is going for you. Amazing work!
Love you guys. I noticed you use a ladder to get in and out of the hull. I suggest you take some time to build some stairs, ideally with a platform at the top. It would make getting tools and materials in and out of the hull much easier.
Johan, you need a floorgrinder (slower rotating angle grider) ø180 mm for all the rough sanding. It is amazing if you need to rough sand large surfaces. Dispite its cost, Its really worth it.
Johan To assist you in your temperture humidity issue ..Your haul is basically a bowl ..If you tarp off the stern/ block it off You can place a portable free standing Air conditioner in the haul....Cold air is heavy and you will create a layer of cool dry air in the hual area ...the more you cover the area on top the better the environment for glassing ..You do not need to seal the haul off just a bit Give it a try you will speed up the process.... considerably ... Here is a sample unit to look up This will dehum as well as cool down the area... GE 14,000 BTU Smart Portable Air Conditioner White - APWA14YBMW
Hi guys. Things are looking great on the build. Perhaps this is in your plans moving forward but have you considered building a staircase with a proper landing to make entry to the hull more comfortable. This comes from a guy who has done plenty of work on ladders and they are tiring by the end of a day. All the best enjoy the summer.
Hallo Johan, I follow you and the boat build. I am very impressed. I am alsof foĺlowing the Duracell project. Matt from Duracell uses for almost everything vacuüm bags. Why are UA-cam not use vacuüm bags. Theo from Holland.

I also agree... do it.
Sounds right
I absolutely agree with your assessment it will pull the epoxy out of the fiberglass leaving a weak bond.
Have to agree with all these comments. Definitely worthwhile to fully prime the timber before the first fibreglass layer.

Johan is the hardest working guy on UA-cam! Its looking good.
He certainly has the ability to make things very uncomplicated.
Having worked on old boats, I can only say what you're doing here is awesome.
Some relaxing down time is certainly due. ❤
Johan, if you have room, you might want to setup your pre-lamination work station in the hull. Save you steps in the long run. 😊
I am growing old with RAN Sailing.
They'll get there.
Just don’t grow up 😜🤣🍻
The guy is nuffink if not relentless.
I don't think I would have ever çommited so much of my allotted lifespan to such a project ɓut it's always a very personal thing I have the greatest admiration and respect for anyone who chooses to take this most individual decision.

Hello from Siesta Key Florida
Love the Johan voice over in this one! :)
Craftsmanship redefined. Absolutely beautiful work!
The nature outside the barn gives this video additional artistic value.
A good friend of mine John Lewis from Dorset England built two large boats in his shed, and had a job, excellent wife and kids, sailed them across the pond, quality was unbelievable,I was in awe, I had forgotten people like you still existed! Good Man!
@billlawson5571 - why did he build two?
@@wmilliosOne for weekdays and one as a weekend sailer ;)
Fantastic Johan, your channel is a true inspiration to us all. The interior looks massive and we are positive the finished product will be a gem to cherish for a lifetime. Thank you!
This is what life should be about - passion that brings you up from bed every morning excited thinking life is beautiful - love it
Great job well done............love it.
Nice heavy fiber cloth well done as always
The shots with Johan standing inside the empty hull give a perspective of just how huge your boat is.
😀😀👍👍❤❤ Thank you for all the very hard work. Please take your time with the build. 20 years from now a day or two will not make any difference!!! Vera will let you both rest for years while she captains the boat!
Imponerande allt jobb ni har gjort så här långt.
She is coming good.
Another fascinating episode. So much meticulous work and planning is going into Ran 3, and I am so glad to be following along. I hope your family enjoyed the beach. Well deserved.
What a achievement and just you two ,Noah's ark in the making it's going to be good .

the editing on this was great! it was fun to hear Johan's voice in the voice over
Looking good. The care will pay off.
Children inspire parental home-building. The floating home that little Vera inspired is so impressive.
OUTSTANDING WORK!!!!!!
Amazing work love seeing the weekly progress on Ran III!!
Great video always very interesting listening to Johan discuss his next move and then see the results . So far everything looks perfect it's going to be an amazing cruising boat I bet she'll be fast , steady and comfortable .

Fabulous job. Enjoy the beach!
Johan, you are doing great. You are giving me inspiration to never give up. Thanks.
Очень хорошая работа. Как всегда!! Пишу для потдержки канала. Удачи
Great job i am a man from 73 from Belgium and you doing a great job 😊
A great video again!! So great to see the progress! That will be one solid sailing vessel!!
Have you considered using carbon fiber for your chainplates. Instead of relying on bolts to hold the rig, the chainplates are bonded to the fiberglass...all the cools kids are doing that now! Amazing work on the boar, great progress!
Johan, once again very methodical and tidy, well done. Cheers Ian
Once again, a fantastic insight into Tasmania's diminishing past. Great work.

I really enjoy your outside views of the farm and fields

Congratulations on reaching ep. 400! Still fascinated by the build process. It certainly is a "multi-layered" job. :)

Skønne videoer I laver. Flere billeder mens der tales 🙂
Keep up the good work...
Beautiful Creation
I just love the lines of this boat, I am guessing it is optimised for downwind sailing, what cruiser wants to beat upwind all the time.
lovely video
beautiful shot at 12:45.. my favorite time of day..
The wheat is lookin good.

AMAZING JOB!!!
great video
We create our own own world!
You can try using a hair dryer to soften the adhesive on the tape. That frequently helps removing tape that's been on a surface for a long time.
Grattis till 400 🎉
J, power planer dude!
Just think of the epic mancave you can make in that space when the boat is done.
Looking spiffy!
He trabajado muchos años en astilleros y nunca vi un barco sin cuadernas.❤
