Does it have the 5R rifling ?
Accuracy internation did testing on fluted barrels, found the flutes heated at a different rate to the bulkmof the barrel affecting accuracy, sure it looks pretty but you can't beat a nice fat straight profile barrel.
Try some 7.62x51 it worked well in mine.
What do you do with all your brass?
@@pz1269 give it to friends
You certainly proved what most us know: That nearly every rifle has a favorite weight or brand of ammo. Good job Adam.
I have a Mossberg Patriot, so far I have shot 2 boxes of ammo through it. 150 gr. Remington cor-lok and Hornady 150 gr. They shot 1/2" groups at 75 yards. I really like mine
Mine really likes the hornady white tail too !
When I bought my Savage .308, I really really wanted a Mossberg Patriot because for the price, you get a great looking rifle. But I watched several videos and read several reviews that showed a lot of accuracy issues. But with almost every rifle I own, you just have to find what it likes, and feed it that. Another benefit to hand loading.
I've been happy with my mvp patrol in .308. Unique rifle. Killed a 140" buck with it two years ago.
I’ve got a Patriot in 6.5 creed. The stock is very flexible, and bedding the factory stock improved it from 2” groups down to 1-1.25”
For a precision rifle those are unimpressive groups 😳
My 6.5 creed patriot shoots 1 inch group at 100 yards and that’s 3 rounds
@@PR111- right, but for a $200 hunting rifle, hard to argue with that kind of performance.
@@PR111- its not a precision rifle. Its a cheap hunting rifle. If a ruger precision rifle or tikka tac shot like that, then I'd be sending it back to get looked at
Couldn't have said it better. It's a great budget hunting rifle that'll do the job just fine. There's a reason why you don't see police snipers using these instead of their mortgage-tier DMRs 😂
I have the mossberg patriot in .270 with a wood stock and a vortex 3-9 and I love it!
Got my Mossberg .308 patriot classic walnut. Best 3 shot group I got 0.45 inch (11.43mm). In my opinion the biggest factor for accuracy on this riffle is heat because of the thin fluted barrel. I waited 15 minutes between groups. I used Sellier&Bellot 180gr. Haven't shot any 168gr's. But will definitely give them a go.
Added a gun warrior silencer with barrel tuner. After tuning the barrel , getting tight sub moa groups with any 165grain and up factory loads
I also have a Mossberg Patriot .308 Win. I had changed from the synthetic stock to an MDT LSS gen 2 chassis, folding stock adapter, and SCS butt stock. The pad is a bit stiff. So, I put a Pachmayr (no one makes a softer or hydraulic pad for it, yet.) And I felt like the length of pull was off. Turns out that I needed a Goda Grip cheek pad on it so that I would not slip around and keep my eye box. In the mean time, I had put it back in a another Mossberg synthetic stock, OD Green. Those stocks have a split where the rear action screw goes and, in addition, if you torque it down, you crack the mag well and it well never get tight. So, you could have the action moving, which will create more inaccuracy. I put it back in the chassis, which is a superior bedding over the synthetic stock, which had none. Point being, you need a stock that provides stability for both front and rear action screws.
With the chassis, before, I was getting no more than 1 MOA after 60 rounds of not resting or cooling. Now, I am getting a Kahntrol Solutions clamp on brake, and that will settle things down a little more.
Totally agree about the mid weights. With TC Compass II .308 Win, I experimented and tried Armscor 168 HPBT and it was surprisingly accurate. Found a bigger brand with similar BC and so Federal Fusion 165 gr is so good and I go through the same hole. I don't mean widening the hole. I mean, clean as a whistle through the same hole.
I expect to get close to that with my messing around with the Patriot. However, it is a smidge heavy now, with the chassis and an Arken SH4 Gen 2 4-16X50 that I may change to a 6-24 (bought another one before the price goes up.) I may migrate the 4-16 to my 5.56 and have it look similar to a MK12 Mod 0.
I have a patriot in 30-06 walnut stock with a cheap Sig buckmaster 3-9×40 I have managed to get 1" groups but found that after 3 shots the barrel needs to cool but that being said it is a hunting rifle with a fluted barrel it gets hot quick. Ive managed 1" groups at 100 yards no problem. Absolutely love that gun and I am very confident in its ability. Again though 3 shots and I let it cool down for about 5 minutes.
Bought a patriot in 308 that's a work in progress. The triggers are garbage, replaced with a Timney huge improvement. The front action screws are blind threaded and known to bottom out without being tight enough to the stock. I put washers on the screw head to make it right. Haven't shot it yet waiting for the weather to cooperate.
I have a soft spot for Mossberg firearms but some people say they’re junk. Infact the gunshop I go to talked me out of buying one...I still do like them so perhaps I’ll get another one day . Good test big fella 🇦🇺👍
More often than not the guys behind the counter are nothing more than salesman. Every once and awhile you’ll find a shop with an informed salesman but they’re all going to have their own opinions and such.
I have that gun in 30-06 they are grate guns
I'm excited to see how this does. I have a Mossberg Patriot in 270 win. I'm happy with it. I've seen lots of mixed reviews.
I've seen lots of mixed reviews too. Why I wanted to try one
@@WHOTEEWHO my only complaint on mine would be bolt is a little sloppy when open. But other than that seems to be a decent rifle. It's not a sub moa rifle with the ammo I have but it's only one I've tried in it. I have it sighted in with some federal power shock 130 grain. I'm getting a inch and a half to inch and three quarter groups with it. But now I have more to try. But it's too cold out today. 23 above here today. Lol
Mass produced firearms with parts built to a tolerance spec are always a lottery, stack the right bolt with the right barrel and it'll shoot sub moa, stack the wrong bolt with the wrong barrel and it'll be a 2-3moa gun. If you're chasing sub moa guarantees you need to buy an action and have a barrel blank chambered to match by a pro.
@@ancientrenegade9243 my savage axis rifles shoot sub moa. I know guys that have Ruger American that shoot sub moa. Everyone thinks you gotta spend 1k to get sub moa. But ya don't. Alot of it's ammo and finding wat it likes. I been using factory ammo in my Savage rifles and get sub moa.
@@ancientrenegade9243 and this video proves the right ammo paired with the right rifle and it'll shoot sub moa.
Up here in Canada, we’d say that, the Mossberg Patriot is definitely minute of Moose.
What does that mean
@@SkellyWaggs
A moose is a very large target, so a firearm that doesn’t group well, but is still able to hit the vitals of a moose at 100 yards, is called a gun that shoots minute of moose.
Instead of minute of angle (moa) it’s minute of moose
What is a good rifle but without paying so much for long distance deer and moose rifle
@@Wearestillhere306
Hi. As to you question, it really comes down to how much money you are willing to spend. Firearms prices are crazy different here in Canada ,way more expensive, compared to in the USA, so I can’t truly say what’s best or better for you. I sold firearms for many years, and when I was asked this same question I would tell them to first establish a price point, out the door, and we could go from there.
Having said that, if you say you want to keep it under a thousand dollars, then you probably have several really decent choices, first, the Browning X-Bolt, and the Tikka T3, would be up there in my opinion, the Winchester XPR is a awesome gun and great value, and I’m sure I could get a XPR here in Canada with my choice of decent glass on it for probably around $1100 cdn so I’m sure you could do way better in the States . As to the Mossberg, from my experience I have never seen one that shot exceptionally well, and I’m sure there’s some out there that do, but my experience says that at any shot over 200 yards your probably relying on luck as well.
Adam I'm just came across this video today 2/19/24. I have a Mossberg Patriot in 308. I have olny used 150grain Soft points .I recently won a Christensen arms Mesa Roy in 308. I took both rifles to the range for kicks I compared the rifles The Patriot hung in very close to the Christsen Arms it was really close. I was using Hornady American Whitetail ammo. The budget rifleb nearly beat the custom .
I’ve got a patriot in .270 and I use core lokt 150 gr and I can say without a doubt my rifle LOVES that bullet, bullseye 100 yards out in 3 shots, all shots within an inch of eachother
👍👍 good shootin
I usually pull the bolt, sight down barrel to Target and dial scope on target. Then dial it in.
That's exactly how my boys rifle was. I bought him a Mossberg in 30-06. Tried 180's and got around a 1 1/2" group at 100. Now it's getting on average around 3/4" groups with 165's. That's crazy.
Twist rate matters. ;)
Bedding problems
The ballistic optimum for the caliber is 165.
I finally put the vortex scope and their pro series rings can't wait to break it in and see what it's really capable of
Own a couple of mossbergs still have one I bought in the 80 s … looking forward to the video fan of 308 🤩
This was a fun video
I’m glad to see your review of this rifle. I have the same rifle in the same caliber and mine is FDE colored. I almost got the Camo one you have cause it looks dang good but I found a deal on the FDE model. I’ve had good experience with mine once I found my ammo weight of choice and 168 grain is what has always shot best in mine for me. I bought mine about 2-3 years ago and at the time, it had a few bad reviews from less than trustworthy reviewers in my opinion so I bought and tried for myself and came up with the same opinions as you. Glad to see you do a review on it and prove others wrong about the rifle. It’s a solid rifle for the price and will smoke a deer just as good as a $1,000 and up gun.
I have a fond spot for Mossberg but it was from another era--I grew up shooting the 151M 22 LR with a 15 shot tubular feed. I still have it and just love the accuracy and the way it feels in my hands.
I'm sure Mossberg is a totally different company by now but that 308 sure looks good.
My experience with the 308 is that it prefers lighter grain bullets. I handloaded the 308 for many years and the lighter I went the better it shot.
thnx for the video~!
Had my mossberg patriot 308 in the walnut with the vortex scope still. Sight in and 100 yards first few shots were around 1-2.5 moa. After putting more rounds down, noticed the groups got absolutely terrible on multiple factory loads at 150 to 180 grain. Realized the bolts were coming loose and taking it apart I realized the big gap where the recoil lug is. Decided to just glass bed the recoil lug area and at the start of the barrel only. Blue lock tight all action and ring bolts and torque to spec. Went back at 100 yards with 150g federal and core lock 150. After bedding I’m hitting sub moa at 100 every single shot and nothing loose. Overall just fix the recoil lug slop and make it tight and it won’t do you wrong for the price!
I have that same rifle topped with a Vortex scope. It did ok with 150 grain Winchester ammo but when I picked up a box of Norma 150 grain ammo my groups greatly improved. (the only good thing that came out of the ammo shortage). I have shot two nice bucks with this rifle/ammo combo with excellent results. Now it seems to be the rifle I pick more often than not when heading out to hunt.
Because of Covid I too had to try Norma. I had never even heard of it before. Excellent results. Great groups and drops deer well.
@@kurtwilhelm3823😅😅
I’ve always found that twisted bolt to be a beauty. When I got my 308 it was between this and the Ruger Predator. I went with the Ruger due to the shorter but really like this one.
Go with the Ruger... I've had the Mossberg and it is trash... Sold it and got the Ruger and never looked back
@@joshjones6805 Ohh I did and haven't regretted it. tks
I chose the Ruger Predator 18" 308 also but I played with this mossberg at the gun shop and it feels so much smoother and better
Looks like a great setup if you get the 165g or 168g ammo! Excellent video!🇺🇲✝️🇺🇲
I have the Patriot. This test will be useful.
Thanks for the video,it showed the same as other accuracy tests I have seen with the mossberg.while a nice looking rifle, they suffer in the accuracy dept.
I got three patriots one in 30-06, one in 6.5 creedmoor, and one in .308. All of them shoot good and have killed animals 👍
I bought my son this rifle in 6.5 creedmore. I was impressed with sub moa right out the box. These are great rifles at a great price.
Awesome
What ammo are you using?
I have the exact same gun camo and all. I added a tanker break because recoil was to heavy to see bullet impact. Absolutely a tack driver with any ammo I put through it topped off with a hawke 4x12x56. Great accurate set up I just wish the break didn’t make it so loud but it took nearly 90% of the recoil out of my 308
Hawke are fantastic.
I always thought they made some good looking models, but I've only seen one actual rifle in a gun store. That is a great looking rifle and it shows potential as a shooter. I always bed the action and the first 2 or 3 inches of the barrel, then free float the rest. I'd bet that rife could be made into a real shooter. Great video my friend!
If someone is willing to put in the work I think most guns can be great shooters. I bed my Remingtons when I get them.
Interesting that you bed the first couple inches of barrel. I will have to look into that.
I had a Mossberg Patriot and even with handloads at 100yds it would not stay under 5-7 inch groups. Ended up selling it after a few months, bought a few Savage Predator rifles and haven’t shot a bad group yet.
Maybe you should learn how to shoot better then
Odds are.. the rifle just needed to be “shot in”. The more you shot it, the smaller the groups would have gotten until you started getting the same consistent group size. Then don’t clean the bore until the group started to open back up.
there's always a critic - why would you sight your rifles in to miss? if it works, it works - you can't argue with results but people will try! 😀
I have almost the same rifle and it's favorite food is the Federal Fusion 165 grain. 180 Winchester White Box is also good, but it loves 165 Federal. It did also seem windy where you were. Maybe you can do some more videos later on with it. I didn't need any reviews to know I love mine.
I have a 30-30 lever mossberg and it's a good rifle, you're getting yours broke in now and she'll get better as you go
I have a Walnut Patriot in 30-06 and it loves the 168gr. My first 3 shots out of it could be covered by a nickel. I'm shooting Federal 168gr Berger Hybrid Hunters.
Another winner video. Hey, bring out the ol 270. Miss seeing it
I got this same gun in 6.5 Creedmoor it shoots great .
I got a mossburg patriot in 30-06, It's on point for sure. Great video whoTeeWho
Thanks for watching Daniel
I the same one and I love it .I have not had any problems with it .iv laid 14teen deer so far with it
Love my mossberg atr 100 in 270 that my dad bought in the 90's then gave to me, still groups .9 or better(with good boolots) with me behind it and I'm no pro.
I got a MVP scout in 308. It shoots sub moa with 180 grain Winchester super X soft points. I have to believe it opens up out futher because the nature of the ammo, but I haven't shot it very fare. Love the 1:10 twist barrel.
My son has one of these and got his first deer with in the 2020 season. Nice rifle! Shared the video with him.
I got one in 308. When barrel warms up accuracy drops but as a hunting gun first shot drives a true hammer
I have a Mossberg Patriot in 30-06 love that gun I have taken many deer with it
Awesome
I have the regular patriot in 6.5 Creed...stacks dimes with 140 eldx.running the styrka s3 on top 4x12x50..sweet Lil deer rifle.
I love mine in 243. Got it at scheels all scoped up and everything. Took a little to get it tweaked in but at soon as it did it was a dream to shoot and it was only for 3 to 400 bucks. I've already put four deer in the freezer out of the five years I've had it.
Very nice!!!!
@@beavisbrowne3497 thanks and who knows maybe I'll get one in 308 and slap a long range scope and a bi pod. That could be my big game rifle.
Right on. The Mossberg line of Patriots not only look great, they shoot very well and are quite literally a good bang for your buck. Bedding the action and floating the barrel on these can tighten up the groups even more.
i’ve been trying to find a nice budget friendly rifle in 308 and you’ve been giving good reviews on budget friendly rifles and now i can say the browning can wait! i’m going to go with either the mossberg patriot or the winchester xpr
You would be better off with the Browning then any of the other mentioned. The Browning is a far superior build quality.
Cannot beat the Winchester.... Browning can't compete,,,cost over performance not there.. if you can pay for the Browning,,,go for the then why not pay for a Winchester model 70.....but the xpr is by far the best "budget" rifle made
@@krookpd01 ya here’s the funny about your model 70. Was good at one time, what’s that term pre 64 😂😂. And take that for what’s its worth cause really the old guns where never that great as far as accuracy it was about action, build quality and superior materials and a shitty old style trigger. Then it got turned into a push feed Remington 700 and Remington spanked it’s butt in sales as the Winchester was still over priced in comparison. Today your beloved model 70 and other models are of better quality then the pre 64 Winchester ever was and they are now made at the same factory in Japan 🇯🇵 where Browning’s have been made for a number of years. Even to look at the stock on a XPR you can clearly see it’s a very badly done copy of a x bolt stock even the recoil pad Winchester uses is the same as Browning has had for years. Don’t get me wrong I love my Winchester’s, hell I love them all each and everyone of them no mater who makes them. But my Browning’s are and always will be my go to. Hell Winchester has been riding the coattails of Browning for years. One could make a really good argument that Winchester wouldn’t exist if it where not for Browning.
Model 70 is being built by FN,,,in Columbia SC.. back to a controlled round feed,,,and much higher standards, than post '64's. .. to each his own,,, but in the 30+ years I've been hunting never saw a model 70 fail,,,,,and my my 1979 model 70 (post 64) has been around the world.... and stood with even much bigger names than the Browning's
Winchester and Browning are owned by the same company,,,,,and most Brownings are being manufactured in Japan,,,,as with most things quality is lost when companies start reorganizing, and looking for a dollar.....the old Belgium Browning were the best,,,,, but just like the Winchester they suffered a lot of quality,,,,but we are talking about high end guns,,,,,as far as these "budget rifles" I believe you're rolling the dice with any of them,,,you might get a great one or a barely functional one....
I always really liked the MOSSBERG bolt action rifles. I have yet to own one, but you make me want one…
Thanks for watching Cranky
Funny this video came out , I ordered some 308 stuff to make a little custom 308 build for myself.
I normally like to shoot 6.5 Grendel in a bolt action.
I been oogling a 308 for a long time.
I've got the Mossberg 4x4 in .308 and it's deadly accurate with federal gold medal 168 bthp.
Cool video. My buddies asked me about the Patriot all the time.
Wondering how much the sled affects accuracy vs. bipod vs. sand bags. Be interesting to see a video comparison of your most accurate rifle/ammo combo shooting on all theses types of rests. So the favorite rifle and specifically matched ammo would be the constant, and the type of rest would be the variable. Maybe you've done this comparison before - I'm new to the channel and haven't finished watching all the archived videos.
Get that question a lot. Many have their own preference and think their way is best. I probably have ten videos getting same hole groups with a sled. One good one to check out is the 22-250 hand loads video. 5 in the same hole off a sled
@@WHOTEEWHO Thanks, I'll check that out!
The sled imo is the best because the bipod can affect the angle of the barrel if the shooter moves or flinches. A sled is the most accurate way to me
Yup....five in the penny (same hole) is hard to argue with!
I think sleds offer a certain level of reducing the human error factor, which allows for more accurate data collecting when tuning a rifle to a specific load or in choosing a factory load to run. The more human error you can eliminate the more accurate your data is.
Love how you sight in rifles... no frills... works everytime 👍
Appreciate you watching

I got two patriots in 3006 can’t wait to see your review
Awesome
Excited to see the results, I won the exact same gun, chambered in 6.5 prc however.
My 308 AR really likes the 165 regular corelokts at 100 yards.
Shooting a the 30-06 version with 165grain federal nosler and getting touching groupings at 100yards and half inch groupings as 200 yards, definitely a great rifle for $500
I have the patriot in 308, wood stock. Have shot every brand and weight bullets I could find. When someone asks me about the Mossberg Patriot Rifle my answer is always the same, " Mossberg makes a good shotgun".
I bought a new Mossberg Patriot Night train in 300 win mag. That thing was terrible. I put 150rds through it of all different ammo I never could get at the group with anything. But if I can't get a rifle the group one inch or less I don't want it. I think if you shot five shot groups with that you might be well disappointed also.
Thank you for the review, brother. Looks like a decent rig. I like the way you explain your sighting in.
Appreciate you, brother. 🤙🏾
Appreciate you watching
Thanks for the review. Love the different grain weight test. Backfire did a review that wasn't so good. Maybe they got a lemon. Gotta love a good budget rifle.
Thanks for watching
Wtw I remember asking for a review on a Mossberg Patriot and I got it thanks, the rifle is not too bad as I thought you just got to find the right ammo for it
👍👍
I have 3 mossberg patriots 308 270 243 it took about 100 rounds in each to really group well
Most all reviews on UA-cam about the Mossberg patriot has been 2-5” groups at 100 yds so I definitely want be buying one.
All I can show is my experience. Wish I had more of em to test
I have been wanting the Mossberg Patriot 300 win mag. I should have bought it when it was $399 in a wood stock.
I have 2 patriots one is a 6.5cm and a 270 win both shoot under 3/4 in groups at 💯 yards the 6.5 might even be 1/2 in they love hornady ammo 129 gr in 6.5 and 130grain in the 270. Great hunting rifles for the price point with cerekoted barrels
Sighted in my buddy's 308 it's a damn good rifle
I have the mossberg patriot in .375 Ruger, salt and pepper laminate stock, cerekote barrel and love it!
💪
The answer is in the barrel rifling twist. That determines which weight of bullets will be stabilized properly.
Trying to learn more about rifle shooting. Liked and subscribed. Thanks!
I have the 25-06 and the 450 bm in the patriot and I have no complaints
I have heard the rear anchor screw is kinda under torqued from the factory but tightening it much may crack it because plastic... Probably an easy work around for someone that is slightly handy at all or has access to UA-cam video tutorials. Seems like you need to pay attention when you take it apart because the mag insert/sleeve is just sitting in there and will fall out, so watch where it lands lol
I have that rifle, it loves Winchester deer season XP 150gr. Reloaded 150gr game king is amazing too! Great rifle!
I have this exact rifle in 6.5 CM. I also handload my own rounds. Factory ammo doesn't shoot well. I fired Sellers & Bellot 140gr, Remington 140 gr Core-Lokt, Hornady ELD match/ELD-X, and Sierra Game king 142gr HPBT. The factory ammo shot terribly, but when I started developing load data, I realized that the ELD-X and Game king shot REALLY well, but I needed different powder charges. I now shoot only the ELD-X in 143gr, 40.7 grains of H4350 and CCI 100 small rifle primers out of ELD match brass, OAL 2.80 +/- 0.001 inches. A 300$ rifle is shooting a .5 MOA at 200 yards. This video is a perfect example of paying attention to the rifle's needs. Just because a gun shoots the first ammo you throw at it poorly, doesn't mean it's the rifle, or you. Rifles have preferences to ammo. Just experiment around and find the one your rifle likes. Great video man! Keep shooting straight!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haven't shot a Mossberg Patriot, but I've owned several Mossberg ATR 100 and Maverick rifles, which use the same barrel and action combo I believe. My fluted barrel Mossberg ATR .308 shot the Winchester Super-X Power-Point 180 grain the best. I recall it was a big difference between those and all the other flavors of .308 I sampled. It's nice when a rifle can shoot the cheap (relative) off the shelf ammo. Thanks for another great video!
I love the camo pattern.
Me too
Mr whotee , I have that exact rifle different scope, my didn't like Remington or Winchester ammo at all , Hornady was ok , I load up some custom loads I used Lapua brass , barns 164 gn TTSX solid copper bullets and I'll tell you that rifle is a tac driver at 350 yards
I had a stainless Mossberg Patriot with fluted barrel, grey laminated stock and spiraled bolt that I ended up selling because it just would not group, similar to your experiences. Beautiful gun!! Tried Remington core lokt 150, Winchester Silvertip 150 and finally Federal match 168. Both 150 hunting loads were like a 3 inch group at 50 yards, the Federal 168 Match was a 1 inch or less group at 50 yards but is not hunting ammo so sadly the gun was traded on something else. Just happy I was not alone in my accuracy issues. I bought it used with a nice scope and ready to go from a dealer, guessing the previous owner had the same issues.
Who Tee suggestion attach a cardboard backing to your target it will punch a hole and not tearing it-when you put wood and shoot bust the paper
If you can find it - the federal 168 grain BTHP is by far the best I’ve shot and I’ve shot thousands of em - deer don’t like em thru and thru on big bucks - big pigs and great big gators 🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊and a .308 does not like the 180 grainers at all-great video as always 👍
Great video! I always learn something from you! Nice rifle too.
that rifle is soooooooooo nice, i fricken love it
Very sweet set up ammo n all!!. Hope all is well my friend.
Last year I picked up a Mossberg MVP Predator in 308, I topped it off with a Firefield 10-40x50 scope. Barrel on it comes non-threaded so I got it threaded and put on a three chamber muzzle break. It seems to like my handloaded rounds using 168gr Speer BTHP.
Thanks for the review. Just a thought, camo wrap the optics. Not necessary but looks cool.
Your videos are always spot on with my current searches. I'm in the middle of trying to find a perfect (for me) scout style "do-all" .308 for whitetail and mid-long range target shooting....
I hope to see more of the rifle hunting. I sold a co worker one of these for his first deer and elk rifle in 7mm08
Another great video sir. That's crazy how much difference there is between loads. But definitely love that camo pattern.
🙏🙏🙏 always a good day at the range. Appreciate you watching
I don't see anything wrong with the way you sight in. I do it somewhat the same. My bore sight is a Tasco that slips into the muzzle. Then I fire and sight in at the short range for the rifle. 30-06 with a 180 grain bullet is done at 20 yards if the muzzle velocity is 2700 fps. Dead on bullseye is what you want at that distance. For this 30-06 that puts 0 at 215 yards and +2.75 at 100 yards with the total point blank sight in distance at 265-270 yards. This is just an example. The flatter shooting rifles will require a longer short range sight in. Just the way I do it because I can more easily hit the bullseye at the short distance, but it's just the way I learned to do it and as long as you reach the same end you get there however you like.
Mossberg is a great company making great firearms. I have looked at that exact one several times. If I was in the need of a budget rifle like that I’d take it over the ruger American.
If you take 10 Ruger Americans and 10 Mossberg Patriots the Rugers are going to shoot better on average.
My 308 seems to like the 150s best, 1.3” with Federal 150g TSX, 1.1” with Barnes 150g TTSX, 1.1” Norma 139g Evostrike. Obviously all hunting ammo, but the 168, 175, and 185g target stuff has all been just acceptable at 1.5”-1.75”. Been doing this with a 2-7x scope and my crooked eyes, so I’m sure groups would tighten up even. I’ve been zeroed for the 185s to coyote hunt this winter to use them up, but I’ve not killed one yet lol.
Good looking rifle. If the stick is synthetic I woukd use Devcon to stiffen the forend so there's no flex at all. Ive done it to a Mosin-Nagant rifle with a wood stock. Makes a world of a difference. 🎩♠🏁🎯🏵
I'm getting one!!!! Be fun to work up a load for it
I had a Savage International Trophy Hunter in 308, hated it. Sold it. bought a Mossberg MVP Predator 7.62x51/308. Never looked back. Super accurate and feeds well. I reload using 165/168gr Speer or Hornady pills.
Mossberg is making waves with their options. If they can keep their quality control maintained they will only gain more business. Some people have solid accuracy and some have 3" groups or worse.
You'll probably like the 165 grain. It has about 2900 fps and a good sectional density for good penetration. Remember match bullets weren't made to hunt with even though it'd probably work for deer.
165 grain at 2900 in a 308? I think not!
More like 2700.
Nosler Partition .308 in 165 grains = 2800 fps
update; I had problems with the covers slipping on the Arken scope because of how it is held on, I believe. So, I put my Vortex Venom back on the Compass II.
Also, the Backfire channel has done another vid with a Mossberg Patriot in synthetic stock. Not really any better. In one set of ammo, they got to a little less than 2 MOA. From the factory, there is no accuracy guarantee. As opposed to the Compass II, which came with a 1 MOA on the first three shots guarantee. And it shot 1/2 MOA fresh out of the box with store bought ammo. And it surpassed the accuracy test and I am an average shooter.
So, the Patriot is an inexpensive rifle and you may end up spending more to put it in a different stock. Something pillar bedded. Or even a chassis, which is all metal and is the bedding, itself.
In the newest Backfire vid, he reviewed that others, including this channel, were having the same accuracy problems regardless of shooter or optics. And I consider this channel and Backfire to be better shooters than I am.
And if I am the average guy hunting, then it is lucky if we even get a round in the deer, at all.
I’m not what you call a professional but, I’ve been shooting high powered rifles for 60 years and I’ve never attempted to seriously site in a new out- of- box rifle before breaking it in with no less than thirty rounds and a complete cleaning. Just thoughts from a geezer.
Been hunting with a mossberg patriot in 243 walnut with a leupold vx 2 3x 9- 40 , they can be picky with ammo but once you find what it's wants your golden , have taken many bucks over .
