  • I adjust the belt tension on my Perodua Kenari, then we head off to a tiny local classic meet to support Macmillan Cancer Research. We love Desmond the Kenari.
We then headed off to help ‪@WhitelandRestorations‬ with their move around, so head to their channel to see what we hauled out.

It's good to see another small car that fits that niche. The Toyota Porte/Spade cars come with factory fitted accessibility options, and have a front passenger sliding door. No longer made, alas, but in any market with access to used JDM cars, they are a boon, and less expensive than typical accessibility vehicles.

Seeing the angle of that little bonnet, it makes you appreciate why Mercedes had the 2-position opening on their bonnets, so you can have "open" for general tinkering, and "very open" for working on things where you don't want to be suffering the bonnet concussions... :P

Hi Ian, I just wanted to say thank you for the videos you make. I have a white 1997 Starlet (that my wife took to Rustival as I was away). I have been lacking the confidence to get stuck in and start doing things myself. Your videos show that yes jobs can be a pain but you don't need loads of fancy equipment and not everything has to be perfect. I replaced a rear wheel bearing today and solved the play that caused an MOT advisory and put an end to the terrible grinding noise. I was going to take it to a garage but the combination of their quotes and your videos pushed me to sorting it myself. Thanks again. Ian (Fellow ex Bearwood resident)

  • @ColinCarFan

Agree with your comments about those who drive with unsafe cars - there are so many that have failed MOTs due to low tread or tread damage it is quite unbelievable. (I will admit guilt too on this - none of us is perfect!). P.S. You made me smile with your comment about not letting a car know you are selling it - completely true!

I remember that subway in Bearwood - by the Kings Head. Coming back from Dudley one day, getting off the 126 to get the 11A back towards Cotteridge, it was pouring with rain, and that subway flooded! Not nice! That was back in 2008/9 - since been filled in.

@@heikkiremes5661 I totally agree with this. I am in Scotland, so we get all the rain. My first car was a mk3 Ford Fiesta. I do 70 miles a day, lots of it on the motorway. I see at least 3 cars a week with tyres low enough that I've noticed from 1 or 2 lanes away on the motorway. I frequently flag people down when possible, and they're normally appreciative. The most glaring example was a Toyota Yaris that I followed for 30 miles at ~70 mph with multiple tyres so flat I saw the rim hit the road. After I managed to flag them down, I found there were 3 kids in the car!

Always used mid range tyres on my cars in the past. Never really had any issues and took it easier in damp/wet conditions. My latest car came with Michelins. Have to admit they are way better than I've been used to. Especially in the wet. Little or no aquaplaning, so sure footed and they instill such confidence too. Around £120 each for 225/40 R18s and well worth the outlay, especially if you live somewhere where the roads are frequently wet...like Plymouth, where I live. 😁

3:40 you are absolutely right Ian, loads of people make the same mistake, the number of Zafiras I've seen at the side of the M6 with blowouts during the summer holidays is mental. Folks drive around town on 4 different brands of cracking chinese tyres @ 12psi all year, then get on the motorway for the holidays and bad times occur.
I nearly got caught out with inner edge wear once (noticed it just as the cords were starting to show!) so now I check pressures, inner/outer edges and sidewall damage about once every 4-6 weeks. Better to be safe than sorry!

Good info on tyres. Another little bit of info: we are coming out of the warmer summer months and we will get chilly or possibly even cold weather. The colder it gets, the lower the pressure readings of your tyres. Even if they didn't lose any air at all. It's just physics.

I agree that not all budget tyres are the same. I currently have Rikens on the front of both my car and my Stepdaughter’s. For a budget they’re pretty good, they don’t scrabble about and they’re wearing well.
What I have found is that some cars drive terribly on a particular brand - could be cheap, could be premium - but others drive really well on the same brand and model of tyre.
Nexen, Kumho, Hankook, vreidstein all mid range and pretty good for everyday motoring, and sometimes are cheaper than budget brands if you shop around.

Our Hyundai Accent has the same doubled serpentine belt arrangement for the power steering.
I notice that it has a bit of an inter-relation between the steering pump belt and the alternator/waterpump, that tightening the steering pump's belt means that the alternator tension should be backed off a little.

I can't remember the brand I have on my allroad but I made a point (when it was safe to do so, obviously) to push the tyres, wh3n they were well and truly scrubbed in, to and beyond their grip limit on a wet, greasy roundabout at ........shall we say a much higher speed than was advisable. It was a large roundabout, well surfaced and the results were very informative. So I can say with some confidence that for £280 all inclusive, they performed better than I suspected and if I'm ever tempted to go Ernest Thrasher (eh, Ian!) I will be as well prepared as I reasonably can expect......but as I drive it like a limo with a VIP in the back MOST of the time, I think I'll be OK.

Advice, if I may, for anyone who found it fiddly to adjust the alternator belt on a Perodua Kenari......
Try the same job on an Austin Maxi!
The alternator pivot through bolt is easy, as is the upper bolt on the adjustment slide bracket, but the bolt that attaches the other end of the bracket to the lug on the alternator? Nooooooooo!
The original (44years of age and only replaced because I wanted to replace the 34Amp one with a 55Amp unit, d'oh.)
That bolt and the nut, flat washer and spring washer that attach to it was just a bolt on the original alternator, easy.
But my new part has no thread in the lug on the alternator. I got there in the end, but only thanks to a friend whose dexterity is far the better of mine.

Tyres are the only contact point on the road, so they are super important, even cheap bad tyres are very good now days, but as you said, only on extreme situations you discover the true quality of your tyres, and of course, pressure is also important, as well as the quality, you discover that you are running the incorrect pressure when you lose control. So respect the rubber on your car, check it out for production date, normal wear and if you are going to buy new ones, check reviews and if you can buy something decent. Is worth it.

I know everyone has their favourites but I can't help offer my thoughts too on tyres, seeing as I seem to have bought plenty over the years... My recent experience has shown Hankook and Nexen (as others have said) are very good for the £, for wet weather (read west of Scotland/ Wales) I have found Uniroyal are excellent, they really are wet weather specialists. I've used both RainExpert and RainSports, 2,3 and 5. The early Rainsports were very soft and I had several cases of sidewall damage on low profile front tyres some years ago but recent versions are better in that respect.
Perhaps an idea for Bella: I am very impressed with Vredstein Quatrac 5, all seasons tyres. Have been great in the summer/ mixed weather, they are very predictable in the wet, and naturally also in cold conditions. In snow and icy conditions they seem very capable too but most impressive was how they carry the performance right down to the 2mm/ replacement time wear point when most winter/ all seasons tyres are well past any use. Good range of sizes available for older cars too.

I still think you are at the stage where you need to get a proper work bench along one side and a hoist for lifting cars up to get underneath for fixing and servicing. Makes life really easy..

Full set of Michelin CrossClimate 2 on my Suzuki Vitara for my long semi-rural journey to work. Better than the set of Ditchfinder Generals that were on it. Tyres being the only part of the car you want to touch the ground, ideally.

Yeah I was in the car with the kids the other day and noticed that the rear tyre was low. It happens.
The problem is that rubber tyres have air under compression that air tries to escape and in certain circumstances, it can happen.
If people are giving you grief for it, perhaps it might happen to them one day. They just don’t publicise life’s errors.

Many years ago our province (Québec) made homologated winter tires mandatory for the winter months. The result has been an explosion of cheap Chinese (because they are) winter tires. They meet the letter of the law, but they are not good at what they are supposed to be good at.

Watching you trying to squeeze under that tiny bonnet mate, I did have to laugh. If you're going to carry on with tiny cars you're really going to have to think about a ramp. Either that or your going to have to press the kids into service. You wont have any fingers left.

    My farthers mk3 Xr3i had
re- molded tyres when I was a young lad it's a process of removing old rubber tread and applying new in a mold, which was half the price these days if anyone found out children services would be called

Some chain tire shops and online companies (like Tire Rack) in the USA have online reviews of the tires they stock including customer reviews, wear, speed and handling ratings. Sadly few don't have the fiances to afford good tires, even used ones, so have to choose the cheapest China made and brand ones to be legal and able to use their cars. Some tire companies offer different level quality or market tires from brands they own. For example Michelin has their name for the top tier, owns B.F. Goodrich for their performance and mid-range price brand and has owned Uniroyal for their 'budget' line. Some brands may have tires made in China but to their specifications so should be ok for most buyers. Still maintaining inflation, balancing, alignment are critical for safety and wear.

belts have not just got bad, there have been "sod" belts for years.. I had a Peugeot 304 rag-top that had a transverse engine but a front mounted fan & water pump so the belt had a 90degree bend in it with a "facing down" alternator for the top bend & a lower jockey wheel for the lower bend... that was a sod even all those years ago so nothing new.
