    Great video as usual David - wish I'd known about these a couple of years ago! I've just invested in an 'L' bracket following the very ball-head creep you were talking about, it's made things sooo much quicker and easier 👍🏻

    Thanks for the review. Going to get an L-Bracket soon, for the exact reasons you mentioned. But need a new ballhead first, because my SBH-100 (which came with my Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB tripod) ist closes on one side, so cannot use an L bracket. Thumbs up for your video!

    I am predominantly shooting real estate, both photos and video on a regular basis. I am forced to shoot vertically for many small bathrooms, buildings, and 2 story residence.
    I am using a manfroto tripod, with a dual bubbles/ with extended controls to level the camera.
    Do you know of anyone who has used this with a small rig cage on a Sony A73? Would this even work?

    I've used an L bracket for years, and recommend them for my students. They also work as an exoskeleton and can help protect your camera if it drops. Sunway makes some nice reasonably priced ones. I've also seen some nice ones on eBay from Asia. Don't get the cheap two piece ones shown in the video. Get one made out of one piece with nothing to have to worry about tightening.

    • @natimages3
      @natimages3 5 років тому

      I've bought and used the "cheap two piece" at less than $40 and they work perfectly fine, never had them come apart. If you are worried about the pieces coming apart, apply some silicon or adhesive and put them together. Beast paying $120 for a piece of metal that's maybe a little better.

      If you use a nikon grip, you won't have any problem. Some of the third party grips are great as well, but not all. I've attached l brackets, holsters, and shoulder straps to my d610 grip and not had a problem even with heavy lenses attached.

  • @DJCENTIF1

    Do they make an L bracket which allows for tethered cabling? So you can leave the cable in place and flip the camera to vertical.

      Some (not all) of Really Right Stuff L brackets have an adjustment so they can be up against the left side of the camera or further out a bit. That might work for you...

    I'm wondering if there is such thing as a lock for tripod.. I have a manfoto good tripod filming myself street performing on my gh5, the tripod is chained to my music stand, altho I need a lock for the attachment that the camera is husted to tripod so no one can screw it off & run away with it
    Basically a only way to open if i have the key in my pocket... then i'd feel secure with my 1000£ camera away from me

      If your ball head is arca Swiss standard it is compatible. But most manfrotto models comes with manfrottos own system. But you can use a simple converter for that, instead of buying a whole new ball head.

    using a cheap l bracket on a cheap grip is asking for wobble .. we tested l brackets on mehke grips ..nikon grips .. theres a reason nikon grips are expensive when used with an L bracket theyre much more stable ..

  • @ArumesYT
    @ArumesYT 5 років тому +6

    0:28 I don't know what you mean with "most tripods alone", but I never had a head that couldn't do portrait. And who uses a tripod without a head? Also, 1:06, I never had that problem. When I fix my head (used different 3-ways and balls in the past), it doesn't move. At all. And we're not talking about super expensive equipment here. My current ballhead is a Manfrotto 324RC2.

    • @majorhagar
      @majorhagar 5 років тому +2

      You are right. Yet L brackets make a huge difference in terms of convenience and utility. Especially when you are shooting high magnification macro or making Panaromas it is a great pain to have your ball head axis changed. It saves great time and effort. Also it doesn't have to be an expensive upgrade. There are cheaper but durable alternatives if you search online.

  • @Mrbluesplayer43

    I really don't see the need for an L-plate. The time it takes to loosen your camera and switch to portrait is about the same time (probably longer) than it takes me to flip my ball head to the vertical. My ball head has a side notch and if the head is is level slipping in into the notch is a perfect 90% degrees change. A much easier maneuver in my opinion. A good ball head (I have an Acratech) will not slip on the side even with a long lense and does not make your set-up unstable providing you have a decent tripod. I also don't like the way L-plates cover up the ports on the side of the camera making it very fiddly to attach a cable release, which is a major drawback. They also add unnecessary bulk to the camera. I've tried L-plates, but they are definitely not for me. They aren't exactly cheap either, so I'd say try and borrow one before you buy.
