    Love the L Braket, as a landscape photographer can't live without it anymore. Don't forget to set your camera so the focus point doesn't change when you change it from horizontal to vertical.

    Totally get this! I hadn't used one until a viewer sent me one of his spare ones last year and it revolutionised my life! I don't take it off my camera now. It's a must for landscape images. Great video as always 😊

    Kirk and others make L-plates designed for specific camera bodies, like the Nikon Z7. The newer ones also include QD mounts, which is awesome if you're using a strap that also works with QD mounts. Best system I've ever used. Of course, it's also probably 3x more expensive.

    I found an L bracket designed specifically for my Canon M6 at Amazon last year. It only cost £18, fits perfectly and leaves access to the connector door on the side. So it's probably worth looking around for something specific rather than using a generic bracket.

    I did the same exact thing. I resisted getting one for several years, but now that I have one I absolutely love it. When I first started getting serious about photography I felt the need to buy every gizmo that was recommended. I ended up with a lot of stuff sitting on a shelf that I never used. As a result I’ve gotten very selective about the accessories I buy.

    Good to see that 3LT released a smaller one. I have the normal sized L-bracket, and asked their support team about one for my mft about two years ago. But since they weren't planning on making one, I had to buy one from Sunway.

    I got an L-Bracket a while ago because of your videos, but because of the flippy screen thing you mentioned, I never use it. I like that this one is adjustable and might allow me to actually use my flip screen. Thanks for the info!

    That gap is for the cable release. In some camera it attaches on the side (like the Canon 6D).

    Also useful if you fall butt over head as I did in Italy recently. The bracket gave an extra layer of protection to my camera body when it and I hit the deck. The camera survived without a scratch, my wrist didn’t 😜

    You definitely don't need a 3LT model. I picked a compatible bracket up for my Sony A6000 for about £10 from Ali Express and it seems fine. I'd definitely go in for one of 3LT's tripods and their brackets if I could afford that. Right now though, that kind of cost will get me a nice quality 18-135mm lens and that definitely takes priority.

    Is it just me doesn't like the orange? Why have an add-on with such visual dominance? Far prefer the customized Kirk Enterprises one, beautifully engineered even has a little locator like the battery pack does for perfect alignment. Semi-matt black finish which blends well with the camera. And such a cool name!

    Hi Brendan
    i use the three legged thing L bracket. They make it in a dark gray color also. But I have a Canon 5D mark 2 and the cable release is on the side of the camera. I had cut a slot on the bracket on the front of the vertical part so I can use the cable release with my camera. Don't have any problem with the bracket bending or flexing

    nice review! only in the last year have I been using L-brackets. RRS, the SINO models from B&H...on D800, 810 and now a pair of 850's with and without the battery packs! im 58, ive had a camera in front of my face since my trusty Canon TX! about 44 years ago.... wow! i love the L-brackets if for no other reason than having a sturdy hand grip on the left hand side of the camera!! ( that almost virginal d800e - 11,000 shutter act... - is quietly for sale. with battery pack and a non-battery pack RRS bracket...just saying...)

  • @curbroadshow

    One thing you didn't mention is that it just makes it easier to carry your camera around. I hardly ever use the 'L' bracket on a tripod , but I keep it on my camera all the time because you can hook your fingers into it and it's much easier than carrying the camera with the grip.

    This is such a coincidence! I just picked up my first L Bracket last week Thursday and already cannot live without anymore! I started photography in 2009 and I never used one, but it makes my life so much easier.. And like you've mentioned: it doesn't slide anymore! I need to buy one for my second camera too, but they're sold out at the moment.. So need to wait till they get new ones.. xD

    That gap in the l bracket is to run an intervalometer cable out the side of the bracket while the camera mounted in the ballhead in portrait mode. It is surprising they didn't use a stronger alloy but I suspect it was to keep the price down. Maybe they need to create an adjustable bridge to strengthen the bracket while being able to still access the ports.

  • @Paul9

    I managed to get an L bracket specific for the EOS R from Amazon for less than £20. It does suffer from the gap issue but allows full use of the flippy screen. Plus it has an extra tripod plate thread so I can then attach to a peak design capture clip.

  • @Beano_z
    @Beano_z 5 років тому

    RRS brackets are the best, seriously, if there’s one “expensive” piece of kit you’re gonna buy, then that would be it!! Always get the specific plate for your camera, makes all the difference long term, unless you succumb to consumerism and upgrade camera every year. Those that claim their $12 L-bracket is just as good, bet they’ve never used a decent one to start with, unpopular opinion sorry, but that’s what I think.......

    You missed the biggest advantage of an L-bracket - when shooting vertically your tripod’s centre of rotation will be directly under your lens’s nodal point for accurate vertical panos, compared to hanging the camera to the side of the centre of rotation where your shots will always suffer from parallax. All the other negatives won’t affect IQ if one’s careful, but this one impacts IQ every time though parallax may only be noticeable when there are foreground objects close to the camera.
    By the way, if your new 3leggedthing L-bracket won’t let you seat your camera dead centre over the nodal plane then that’s also a problem for the same reason.

    Brendan, great video as always. It’d be great if you could do a review of the PD version of the Ellie with PD’s travel tripod. After watching your video, I’m considering the Ellie for use with the Canon R5, but I don’t see how it can be mounted to the PD travel tripod in portrait orientation.

    • @samremington4637
      @samremington4637 4 роки тому

      I have this setup and the travel tripod is compatible with Arca Swiss so you don’t need the PD mount to rotate this to portrait orientation. The PD Ellie is awesome because you can use the capture clip with it.

    I use an 'L' bracket on and EOS R and use the gap to allow the flip screen to sit at 45 or 90 degrees when the camera is lower to the ground. My bracket isn't a 3LT one but the principle is the same.

  • @LordArioh

    I.. do all the stuff pretty easy with only ball head like you showed, without paying extra 50 bucks for more stuff to carry around. And use just Manfrotto BeFree advanced pretty much all the time). got level built in my 80D, if it's for some reason tiny bit off, I can always correct it later, but it would happen with or without L-bracket anyway. Never ever had a slippage, way more chance to get it on any lousy tightened or worn out connections on a tripod itself, or even because of mushy ground.

  • @JanineMKartist
    @JanineMKartist 4 роки тому

    Ok I get it now. Was looking at $25 ones on amazon because I have yet to buy a manfrotto tripod and most likely a basic fluid head but I need to be able to go veritcal. This one you show is about $60 something Canadian. No way will I pay manfrotto pricing for a silly bracket even if it’s not so silly. Man I know now why this is crucial especially with trying to get proper photos of my art .

    I don't mean to be snarky but, I am trying to figure out why a $69 L bracket is better than my $12 L bracket. Mine is stable and I cannot imagine it being more stable. I'm not trying to throw shade a 3LT just curious.

    • @Francis_A.321
      @Francis_A.321 5 років тому

      Mine is actually just 5 bucks and also plenty stable. But it's not completely 90 degrees so it's a little bit off on the vertical/portrait orientation. Just a hair though. Nothing drastic. But I'd score this if I was doing this professionally. Sometimes the "cool factor" inspires people to shoot more.haha

    I wish someone made fitted or universal L-brackets compatible with Manfrotto 200PL-14 quick release heads. The only one I could find was from Manfrotto, so I bought it. It's bigger than I want because it's made for cameras with vertical grips attached, and it blocks my 5DM4's battery cover when mounted. Please tell your friends at 3LT that there's an L-bracket market besides Arca-Swiss users! Gripes aside, though, I can't imagine shooting landscapes anymore without an L bracket.

    • @BrendanvanSon

      The problem is that 3LT is a direct competitor to Manfrotto, so I can't imagine they'd make a product that enhances other tripod brands. Thanks for the helpful video. With the flippable screen, it looks like you have to close the screen towards the back of the camera in order to rotate it properly otherwise the side part of the L bracket would be in the way. You wouldn't be able to have the screen fully open and then rotate it, which is how I normally do it. Is there any hindrance whatsoever to the flippable screen?
    Also, how many millimeters or centimeters does the L bracket add to the bottom of the camera? I have part of a shoulder side strap that screws into the bottom of my camera where the tripod screw would normally go and then has its own opening for a tripod screw. With the L bracket adding an extra bit to the bottom of the camera, it looks like I wouldn't be able to have that bit for the shoulder side strap always screwed in there because now the screw wouldn't be long enough.
    And with the side part of the L bracket having a gap and only allowing you to affix it to the bottom of the side part when taking a portrait, how sturdy is that now? Does it put any pressure on the bottom of that side part since it's not directly in the center?Thanks

      Generally, you can give the product a try and return it if it doesn't work.
      I love mine, personally.

    I rarely shoot vertical with my tripod...maybe this is why! Is there any advantage in using one of these for someone who shoots horizontal most of the time, or is it just a vertical/portrait aid?

    Hi Brendan, thanks for the videos and keep going. I've a question for you about that l-bracket. In portrait mode, did you experienced any slipping or twisting that ends up pointing the camera downwards? Last year, I bought a cheaper version but even with a very tight bolt my long exposures came out blurry. This happens with a heavy gear (d810 with a 16-35mm) but still... I mean, the plate stays secure, but the camera slowly starts pointing to the ground. I'm looking for a new l-bracket and of you don't have that problem I'm attempted to get one of that brand that's still more affordable than the rrs (per exemple). Cheers.

      It's totally stable. I've used it on the 5d and even some really heavy lenses. It's all good.

    Good helpful video, been thinking about getting one but cannot seem to find one that says it will work with my Canon 1d series of bodies. Anyone have an idea if the classic or another recommendation for a good solid L bracket that will work on the bigger bodies such as Canon 1D Series or even the Nikon equivalent?

    • @BrendanvanSon

      It does. You just need to adjust it a bit to that the screen doesn't bump it.

    The gap is for the cables to pass through. The new l bracket does not have 1/4 thread for attaching a strap to. And you missed one massive advantage to a l bracket you can set you camera at 90* and do virtual panos lol come on BVS sell it man sell it haha I have use l bracket for a long time. I do like the way you can adjust the fit nice job

    • @paulcomptonpdphotography

      90* I mean virtual pano if your not sure so the camera is set in the slippy set as you would say need a good tripod head and the pan up with the pano head attached to your top plate. Maybe I will get to show you one day haha

    I have the Sony a7iii with a manfrotto tripod. It doesn’t look like it is compatible with the type of plate used on the manfrotto. Am I wrong? And if anyone can tell me, which specific 3 legged thing L bracket would be best? And if not compatible, what other brand should I look for?

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  5 років тому

      Nope, manfrotto's has their own weird plates which make l-brackets almost imposible. I think the only solution is to find one made by manfrotto.
      The reality is, the biggest reason photographers avoid manfrotto is because of their strange quick release system. Most use arca-swiss.

    • @Kim_Miller
      @Kim_Miller 5 років тому

      I use a Sony A6000 and a Manfrotto tripod, and found their quick release plate too awkward for me. I swapped the plate (it unscrews from the top of the stem on my BeFree model) and bought an Arca Swiss compatible plate. The bracket Brendan is using looks like Arca Swiss compatible. The Manfrotto tripod needs a small round adapter to match up the positioning slots.

      I'm actually not sure. Check if the head is "Arca Swis" compatible. If it is, then yes. But, in the past Manfrotto used to have their own quick release that was different to everyone else's.
