- A short ride to the town garage in my 1997 Ford F-350 with the 7.3 Powerstroke and ZF-5 manual transmission. The truck is a crew cab Long bed and has 285k miles. 3” downpipe, 4” straight pipe, to an 8” CAT stack

I love driving my 7.3 - 97 dullay stick ; except in traffic.
Grind it til you find it!
3:30 reminded me of a memory I forgot I had. My father had a 97 250, and that made me remember him taking off from a light, and how short first gear is
Probably a granny low...best kind imho
They call it low for a reason
Perfect example of how people are wired for negativity. All his shifts except one were great but people would rather rail him for that than compliment him on the others. That’s why we call intersections STOP lights instead of GO lights
Thanks man I appreciate it, and that grind wasnt even my fault, that truck had a bad pedal box and flywheel, along with a bad reverse synchro that would cause a grind no matter what
@@AQLandscaping Is it easy to get the hang of driving the manual
I found a 95 F350 with the big block 460 and i may get it.
I understand the concept itself but the experience is what I need.
@@bryanmartinez6600 It all depends on you and your learning style and ability to figure things out. Yes on a bigger engine like this and a 7.5 460 it is a little easier to not stall and take off with for your first time, but it all takes a little practice. I taught myself on a Subaru Legacy when I was 13 years old lol
Most people today don’t even know what that stick and extra pedal are for!
@@AQLandscaping you just got a little excited to take her out for a spin that's all lmao
Nice truck. I have a 1995 F350 dump truck with the 7.3 for pulling old tractors around. Mine is automatic though. It only has 44,000 miles
Wish I could drive a 1997 7.3 ford really miss the sound of those engines
Sounds even better in an intercooled Super Duty though 😉
I'm picking one up in about half an hour
Nice truck man big ford fan you got yourself a real mans truck
Come on dodge are good too. I take A 6.7 and A 7.3 anyday.
Something about the sound of these trucks man
The good ole 7.3 rumble
Sounds like its got a miss in the injectors.. these trucks are real beasts - and just keep going UP in value now.
Yeah they are. I found a 97 7.3 Crew cab manual with 315,000 miles that i was thinking of picking up but he wants $7k
i wish i could drive a 5 speed like that
these things last! forever
Nice my favorite year
this is we talked about!! really good driver's driving a manual transmission!! great vedeo mate I would like to change a standard automatic transmission to full manual transmission 6speeds!! anybody know where is possible find a bell housing for a manual transmission?
Thanks For Sub and Keep Watching!!
This is real asmr
Sounds good
The zf5 manual had recalls for the secros going bad. That maybe why it grinds going into that gear. I had the same trouble with the one I had. It got rebuilt twice while it was in the shop. Then later on the problem happened again
96 7.3
275000+ miles, still going strong.
i’m looking around on youtube to see other 7.3 OBSs driving to make sure mines not just horribly slow haha
but seriously, it’s weird. you almost have to be full throttle in these trucks to just get going after a red light, but as soon as you hit fourth gear it just flies haha
My 97 is a crew cab dually auto and once it hits 3rd gear and TC lockup she’s a rocket, even without heavy throttle. But mine also has 90k miles and zero blowby.
@@MichaelFletcher-to7mm okay so update on my comment. the trucks got low compression and at the time had shot injectors. efuel and injectors solves that problem but still doesn’t fix the fact it’s got bad cylinder contribution
My 95 F350 only has 72kmiles and the synchro grinds going into 2nd because the ZF-5 has yellow metal synchros which means they are soft which means they wear quick which means if you speed shift, slam gears, downshift to help slow you down when you are going too fast for the gear. All of these things make a ZF-5 not shift smooth not to mention 2nd and 3rd are usually the synchros that wear first because they are used the most. It's not you, it's the design of the German transmission that is the issue.
I’m glad I’m not the only one I just got my 1994 f350 4x4 with the ZF5 And it grinds so bad I start of 2nd because 1-2 grinds hard
@@thatdieselboi6263 ah phew mine does this too. Basically impossible to downshift into second but it still upshits fine. Doesn't always like to go into gear but it eventually does.
sorry but they are not brass synchros
@@joes5096 link?
steel sync just rebuilt mine - great transmission problems are from Operator error
Sounds god
That engine sound like real T444e
Does your ZF-5 grind when you put it in reverse? Mine does. I usually put mine in 3rd and then quickly put it in reverse to slow down the synchros. Is it a typical thing for these ZF-5s?
Nice took a shit on the gears instantly
Calvin Johnson yeah that assembly was shot. I no longer own this truck
Did you get another 7.3?
Calvin Johnson yes. A Super Duty though.
Alex Q what made you go with the super duty?
Calvin Johnson 4x4 instead of 2 wheel drive, and came with a 8' 6" V-Plow
I have the 97 im glad to see how u shift thats what i started doing and its perfect i didnt know if ur suppose to float or double clutch
AlmondChimera80 probably not necessary for daily driving and I certainly wouldn’t float gears in my own zf5
Hey man do you use the granny gear when starting off? The super low range gear? Or can you just start it off in second?
Sorry I meant “first”
I always started off in 2nd unless I was on a really steep grade with a load on the truck. Dont have this truck anymore
Jack MaClean 2nd👍
Lots of power and torque🤷♂️
1st is just so short that unloaded it doesnt even make sense
Somebody should mount a camera on the exterior somewhere and drive it! Nothing like the sound of an obs manual!
Bad idea to ride with your foot on the clutch pedal,as you will learn in time.
I got a 1996 ford f350 dump truck manual transmission put At least 4,000-5,000 under the hood let it sit for the winter with me starting it up every few days then when it started get warmer out tried to start it went ford alike 5 seconds then it just shut off never started Again that was like last year to and its still sitting on the side of my house right now been trying to get it started for a year replaced thw glow plugs basically
Almost replaced everything
So that 4,000 truck turned into a 15,000 truck
Thats i fortunate buddy. I hope you get her runnin' strong and well with no more money being spent
The way you worded this whole thing makes it sound like you are a kid and are describing your dads situation. That may not be the case but it just seems odd to say its got money under the hood but not say anything that you actually did to it. And then saying you replaced "everything" and then only mention glow plugs. Plus its pretty easy to tell if your glowplugs have gone bad or not. Idk the whole thing just sounded wierd. And not many adults actually believe that their vehicle actually gains the same value as the money they put in. Ive got an 88' yj that has around 30k in it at this point as a bad ass crawler but i could never hope to get more than 8k maybe for it. If what you said is true than i hope you never have to bite the bullet and sell that truck.
I want one
00:40 bird strikes with shit 😀
What other engines would this gearbox mate up to?
Anything as long as you have the right adapters
Riding the Clutch, never used the turn signal.
Nope never rode the clutch when I owned this truck. I made one turn on a public road in this video, and sure that ONE TURN that was made I didn’t use the turn signal. Boohoo. Glad we have you strong keyboard warriors 💪🏼
How tf is your 2nd to 3rd gear such a nice transition mine fuckin jerks u forward then back
What gears is this truck runnin?
This truck was geared with 3.55s
Yes bent synchros are a thing
I have yet to see a cone bend lol
imagine judging people on shifting and driving a automatic.
Is the ride quality as bad as everyone says?
Depends on your setup. This was a 4x2 CCLB and in Rode really smooth. But I've had the same truck but 4x4 and it rode pretty bumpy
Bra 0:04
Looks like ya missed the window on that spit bud lol
What? Lol
Try less clutch you only need it to take off.
Babaso
Hey, it might help if you push the clutch in hahaha.
hate to break it to ya but u dont need a clutch to shift, some people dont even use them
Never could understand why people use the clutch to up shift.
Well these transmissions are synchronized as I'm sure you're aware so you're supposed to. I honestly didnt use the clutch in this truck 90% of the time because it was so fucked. I just did for this video to not catch fire for not. Truck is long gone now
It’s not a semi truck. It’s a synchronized transmission. You should ALWAYS use the clutch. That’s why these trucks all grind gears now, because guys want to float gears like it’s a semi truck.
Easy to see why the synchros are bad in this transmission…. And what’s with revving the engine when downshifting?? Haha, unless you’re double clutching “which is not what was going on” then it serves no mechanical purpose
That truck did not have bad synchros, trans was sound except reverse. It had a broken pedal box. And rev match for downshifting does serve a purpose.. but thanks for the tip on a 4 year old video with a truck that no longer exists hoss
@@AQLandscaping so this tells me that you don’t understand what “rev match” actually does. If you’re downshifting and you rev the engine with the clutch pedal pushed in then you’re not matching anything, you’re only revving the engine, this is why you DOUBLE CLUTCH when rev matching, revving the engine with the clutch pedal out helps allow you to MATCH the transmission with your road speed. If you ever get the chance to shift a non synchronized trans like an Eaton fuller in a heavy duty truck then it will help you understand the concept better, hoss… now I can’t read your mind and know your clutch pedal is fukkd up, all I hear is the trans grind just like it would if the synchros were bad, hoss, just like I can’t automatically know “nor do I give a shit” that the truck has since been sold, hoss. The tip can go for any truck, not just the one you had so take it and put it back in your brain for a rainy day, hoss, at least you won’t look like a jackass next time revving the engine all over the place for no reason… Hoss
@@warrenmcelroy4718 I drove 8LL and 18 speed for a living for many years. Only used the clutch to take off from a dead stop, so yes I do know how to rev match, but thanks again
@@AQLandscaping then why is it that you’re revving the engine without letting the clutch out when the trans is in neutral? I’m just curious
@@AQLandscaping ?
Ahhhhh 1st time ehh???
