  • Why American and European Trucks Are So Different
American and European semi-trucks are very different, in America you see all the trucks with a long nose, and wheelbase, with the cabin behind the engine, whereas trucks in Europe are cab-over trucks where the cabin is above the engine.
But why are they so different, and what are the advantages and disadvantages? Let's take a look at it.
Share down in the comment section which you like the most and why.

@@hughjass1044 the only thing keeping Euro style from being the best is the simple fact that they aren't as streamlined and consume more fuel/energy.
Give them a slight nose like those newer electric style trucks you see in America today, and you end up with almost European style cab overs in America.
Modern airsuspension makes it just as comfy to drive overcab as American style, same for the chairs. So that isn't an argument anymore.
So after a small styling for fuel efficiency has been done, and the modern suspension is on, Euro style trucks is the only way forward. Easy.

North American truck designs prioritize comfort since their operators must travel longer distances on wide and straight highways and roads. Conversely, European trucks face size restrictions, narrow roads, and overall shorter hauls. Trucking industry is a major driver behind two of the world's biggest economies: Europe and the USA. Over the years, they depended on and regulated the said industry. However, there are still risks involved in starting a trucking company. As a twenty-year trucking veteran, and 2.5 million miles, I’ll say it right here--trucking is a cut-throat business. You’re chances of being lied to if you start a trucking company is nearly 100%. Shippers and trucking companies will tell you a million lies to get you through the door, but then once you start hauling for them, the reality is uncovered. Expect to make 70% as much as they told you you’d make. Also, expect to work 10 more hours per week than they promised. Too much government control and regulations. To make good money, you will need 3-4 trucks running. If you can’t afford this, the only other answer is to buy your own truck and go out on the road. Consider trucking to be like a college education. There are no books that will tell you how to do it, and other owner operators are hesitant to help you since you will be their competition. If you're looking into starting your own trucking company this 2023 then I will recommend you look into getting a Governmental business grant. I was approved and awarded $280k as startup capital. Today as a company owner, independent owner operator running under my own authority, 11 years running under my own authority. I do a 15 -16 day run. $25,000 in line haul is my goal. Every month is a 10+ day vacation. I run a reefer and only spend $16,000 to $21,000 a year in maintenance. After taxes, fuel and licensing I profit $190,000 in the bank. There is no short cut to success. Get your own authority and work open broker boards for trips. A good starting place as an o/o is to pull a reefer. Try to stay away from dry freight. There are too many green o/o’s in dry freight, and too many coming and going. The competition is fierce, so it is difficult to get high paying loads. Reefers pay more money. If you have some flatbed experience, you will get even better loads and better miles. In fact, o/o flatbed is probably the best route one can take. You will never see the big money off this industry as a COMPANY SLAVE. I wish everyone reading this comment a successful business week.

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time.
Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them).
Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.
Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).
Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.
(19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad)..
God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.”
      (2:136 / Translated by Community)

Whereas an impact drivers, though not very suitable for drilling holes, it does generate 2 to 3 times more torque than a drill and it’s more suitable for quickly driving long or large screws and fasteners. So in an industrial use where there’s thousands of screws to install on a product, every second saved per screw/fastener installed adds up. May not be that relevant for home use but for industrial use, it does. (So in an industrial setting, an impact driver excels)
Am I saying that a drill is more useful than a impact driver? Yeah, that’s because most of us don’t need to fasten thousands of screws per day, at most we just have to fasten a few screws a day which a drill with a screw bit can do just fine.

What’s interesting is that Australia have a mix of this trucks. Over long distance travel from one major city to another you would normally see American styles trucks. But in cities and towns you would normally see European style trucks. Each design fills its own niche and not one is better than the other.
Edit: I see some people talking about train network in Australia. Yes even though we do have train networks across the coast and country. They are of different sizes and width. Meaning some railways aren’t compatible with one another. Mostly because Australia used to be seperate penal colonies. Which meant each colony developed different style railways. This is why we mainly rely on road trains. Hope this helps.

I made the point that by American (and obviously Australian terms) EU trucks are essentially short haul. They drive less than 400 km on any given route...where US trucks often drive from coast to coast...3500 miles + aren't unusual at all. So, the distance from London to Moscow is less than the distance from Boston, MA to St. Louis, MO 1500 miles...so, in the US if a truck is on the freeway driving 70mph, for 9 hours, he's going to go 600+ miles...less than 1/6th the distance across the US. Australia has similar distances. Short haul trucks in the US may have the long nose (but it will be significantly shorter than a long haul truck) will have very similar dimensions to that of EU style trucks.

Driven the longer sleeper cabs with a 53 foot trailer, there is no way you could maneuver this on the smaller UK roads. However driving a truck in the UK, albeit a smaller one IMO is more challenging, here in the US there is a lot more space and far less congestion. If there are any UK truckers reading this there are plenty of vacancies for truck drivers right now, put in the hours and you can easily make over $100,000 a year and that is being a company driver.

I'm a german truck driver and at first I want to thank Truck Tropia for this video, that explains the most important differences between US nosetrucks and EU COEs quite well. But maybe I got something wrong at the first part (drivers comfort) or there was something wrong in the explanation: The cabins of EU cabover trucks are quite smaller, yes, but the comfort is almost the same. We just don't have the opportunity to have a toilet inside the cabin, but all the other things mentioned in the video are in it. And we have less truck owners because a) it's not always senseable and b) we have way more regulations in the EU that make it quite difficult. And it is not unusual that owners, some companies or employees in the EU also modify their cabins to make them more comfortable or give 'em their own touch. We have to spend even more time to rest in these cabs because of working time regulations (max. 9h driving + 11h to rest and sleep). The manufacturers were able to gain space wherever it's possible (flat floor cabs with up to 2m height for example) and to make everything highly comfortable. It just needed some smart ideas to make all that possible. So COE's aren't bad, they're actually quite good, especially on our much smaller roads and cities.

    • @Pesmog
      @Pesmog Рік тому +25

Yes, on the latest high spec European cab overs, once you have folded the steering wheel up out of the way and rotated the front seats, there is a surprising amount of room in the cab due to the flat floor and 2m/6'6" headroom. This will be improved further soon when the manufacturers start selling the trucks that meet the new cab regulations that require more cab length in front of the steering axle.

    • @Matt_Alaric
      @Matt_Alaric Рік тому +38

I don't think you can really claim the cab overs are as comfortable as the yankee trucks. They just have so much more room that they don't even need to squeeze every inch of floor space, they can just make things (to a degree) whatever size they think is most appropriate.

As someone who drove a truck for nearly 25 years, if you are an OTR (over the road) driver in the U.S., whether you are an owner/operator, or work for a trucking company, you still live in your truck. You don't go home at the end of every day. You do everything in your truck. You have to cook and eat in your truck. You have to have a refrigerator to store food that has to be kept cold. No trucker can afford to eat at restaurants or truckstops or stay in motels. I don't know how much European drivers make, but in the U.S. it's not very much. So you have to cut corners everywhere you can. Another issue with cabover trucks is that they will literally beat you to death. I'm Australian and pretty new to truck-driving, but I've found that it's far easier to reverse a double in a cab-over Volvo than in a Mack. The tighter turning circle makes it a lot more forgiving, especially if you're reversing around corners without much clearance either side. You can still do it in a Mack, but you have to react quicker to avoid jack-knifing. It probably doesn't make much difference though if you're doing it every day.

Also, our distances are much shorter, so driving time is less. I have been driving on and off since 1972, and I definitely prefer the cab-over design, mainly due to the better visibility, and bonneted trucks are not common here. I did enjoy the movie "Convoy", however, and I have driven in a convoy here, which is only allowed in the Military, where I got my first Truck licence.

Here in Germany, trucks are actually prohibited from driving on sundays which I think is a thing in other countries too. That sometimes leads to quite hairy situations on the Autobahn.
So essentially you have two lanes and no speed limit for all vehicles except trucks. The right lane is filled with convoy after convoy of trucks going 80 kph, trying to finish their hauls or get over the border before sunday and in the left lane you got people doing 250+.
So if you just joined the motorway and are caught in between two trucks, you better check your mirrors three times or else you might have a literal TRUCKload (...sorry) of trouble a lot sooner than you think.

Another point to put up, is that oversize loads and heavy hauls are waaaaaaaaaaaay more common in America than Europe. This is because of how sparsely populated most of the country is, so massive loads are able to be transported through the vast wilderness of America. Europe is more densely populated, so the massive loads that Americans can haul don't always fit through the tight streets of most European cities. The tight streets of Europe also make it so that more pilot cars are required to block off streets to properly make way for an oversize load.
High torque trucks with 10 wheels are common in America, while 6 wheeled trucks with regular torque specs (maybe high horsepower) do just fine in Europe. Also Americans are torque fanatics for obvious reasons.

You also have to consider for US trucks the sheer distances traveled. I mean our short haul trucks while still typically not cab overs like Euro trucks are significantly shorter than the big long haul trucks that make coast to coast runs. That's roughly 4800km from Boston to LA, or a more common run would be 4200km from the Coachella valley, CA to NYC delivering fresh produce. That's the equivalent of driving from the western coast of France to the Russian border with Ukraine. These long hauls are often with a driver team where one drives while the other sleeps in the back of the cab, often switching without bothering to stop.

Ive always thought its weird the US doesn't build modern EU style cab overs with just a longer wheel base for a bigger cabin as you'd reclaim so much more forward space.
You could have more living space, a wheel base somewhere in the middle of the two designs for maneuverability but also stability, and visibility etc.

What's even more interesting is that Australia is a mix of both European and American trucks. It is probably the only place in the world where one can see both types of trucks side by side on a daily basis. Personally, I wish there were more European trucks in the US, because they look much more modern and sleek compared to many American trucks. Also, I think there is a niche market for them in large cities, especially NYC (which has strict limits on truck length like Europe).

The rental car I was driving was a VW Golf or Polo, so fairly small and it worked well on the roads over there... My vehicle back home though was a full size 4-door 4WD pickup and although it would have given me greater visibility on the smaller roads because it would have sat up above the hedgerows, I would have hated driving it on some of 2-way, but one-lane roads that I encountered... Occasionally, I would see a tour bus trying to negotiate those tight roads around the Lake District... Those tour buses looked noticeably narrower than what we see in the US though... I don't think it would be a very pleasant experience driving a European (much less an American) tractor-trailer rig over there...

If you are loading/unloading in Boston, Elizabeth New Jersey, or Brooklyn New York, you often find your truck sticking out into the street after you bump into the loading dock. You are either blocking the traffic flow because you are sticking out into the street or you’d have to detach your tractor but there’s often nowhere to go if you detach. If you had a cab over or a day cab truck you’d have no problem. I just stay attached and block the traffic 😮‍💨

I need to correct something here: European semi-trucks are normally limited to 16.5 metres. A truck and trailer (or wagon and drag as we call them in the UK) can be 18.75, and a low-loader can be 18 metres, but normal semis are limited to 16.5.
And we do have fridges and microwaves in our trucks, I've got them in mine. One thing that is worth noting is that our cabovers are very tall, so there's lots of vertical space. I virtual lived out of a Volvo FH when I was on Euro work, and it could swallow a huge amount of personal kit. The packaging and storage is very clever.
