I also love how Ellie not only gets to save Joel but she saves herself too. Lastly Joel feels he keeps failing throughout the series, but in the finale he thrives in the hospital. There are four (possibly five?) stages of infected.
    First stage are called Runners (these are the newly infected, running around, biting people)
    Second stage are called Stalkers. They show the first signs of cordycepts beginning to show thru the skin and head. These people have been infected for a few weeks to a few years.

    Joel is not a good guy and I love that. This was conveyed well both in the game and the show. Making him a morally grey character, who protects his people in the most savage ways, was an interesting path for the character and honestly I wouldn't want it any other way. Same. I enjoyed Joel as a character and the rules by which the show and game setup. The consequences for actions that came later was understandable, also. Accepting Joel and his ways is accepting that other's can mete out the same retribution in return.

    Tommy's wife - "Be careful who you put your faith in. The only people who can betray us, are the ones we trust." The foreshadowing is wild. I believe Ellie thinks something is up, but Joel hasn't lied to her yet about things, so him saying, "I swear" .. She takes it at face value.

    • @kiml.1565
      @kiml.1565 7 місяців тому +2

      I think that line is the biggest underappreciated theme of the show. Marlene did the wrong thing because she didn't trust Ellie enough to let her make the decision for herself. But it's not a betrayal of trust because she and Ellie don't have that kind of relationship. (Probably a betrayal of Ellie's mom's trust, though.)
      But Joel DOES betray Ellie's trust, because he does know that Ellie would make that decision, and he doesn't want her to be able to make it. So he lies to her about what happened and what her options are, even when she makes extremely clear how important it is to her. He lies with perfect sincerity right to her face. And even though I think Ellie doesn't truly believe him, she has to make herself accept that answer because she's a child and she loves him and she NEEDS to believe it.
      All the arguments about "is Joel justified" or "would the cure work" don't change the fact that the show has been setting up the fact that Joel was ALWAYS going to make these decisions, because he can't lose another daughter, but that by doing so he violates the trust Ellie has placed in him. That's what the show and the game END on. That long shot of Ellie looking uncertain and finally just saying "...okay." It ends on the fact that Joel lies to her.

    I loved everything about the hospital massacre montage. I loved the editing, with the inserts of the bullet casings, and Joel's shoes. I loved that the sound is muffled, and we mainly just hear this music. And everytime the sound of the violence breaks through (like that one guy's scream when Joel stabs him), it is effective.
    It is from Joel's perspective. He's almost disassociated cuz he is of a one-track mind. Nothing matters to him, these people don't matter to him. Only Ellie and her life matters to him. Everyone else is just an obstacle, folks who are in his path. He has no emotions or rage or anything against these people. It's not personal.
    They are simply in his way.
    Also glad that they didn't have him kill the nurses. He killed everyone who was a threat or in his way. The nurses were neither. Plus, the game REQUIRES the player to kill the surgeon and the nurses are optional.

Marlene did the wrong thing for the right reason (to save humanity), and Joel did the right thing by saving her from having her bodily autonomy violated, but did it for selfish reasons. He simply couldn't lose another daughter.
    I don't think she was fooled for a minute by Joel's lie. She simply said "O.K" at the end as a way of saying "o k, i know you're lying, but we'll go on from here anyway." She's not stupid. Ellie should not have been asked to make that decision at all. Not until she's reasonably well, mentally able to decide and all the consequences are explained to her, with the chances of success and qualifications of those operating on her. So she can give fully informed consent while having mental capacity to do so or to back out of it. Anything else is bad and immoral, apocalypse or not. So I'm not mad at Joel (who had his own, different reasons for his actions) for stopping the Fireflies. Should mention that Ellie was not told about the surgery at all, and they just started prepping her as far as I'm aware. So going off of the argument that its Ellie's choice; which it is, Joel is 100000% in the right. Granted Ellie would have agreed to go along with the surgery, but they never asked her. So by not doing so, and resisting Joel's attempt to stop the surgery and dying, therefore not actually allowing her to give her opinion even after waking up, that's entirely on them.
    BONUS Also: There are audio files you can find in the game that imply that they've attempted this on others before and it did not work. BONUS BONUS Also: The surgeon who was going to perform the surgery was ENTIRELY unqualified to do so. The guy had a bachelors in biology. Thats all.

      He didn't ask her either. That's why he lies about what happened. If he was 100000% right, he wouldn't have lied.
      But you're trying to derail the trolley in the trolley problem: that's not the point. The point is that Ellie's sacrifice would have saved the world, but she would have had to die. Ask anyone in that world if it was a worthy sacrifice and they'd likely have said it was, except for Joel. Love isn't logical. He chose his selfish need to save his new daughter over saving mankind or giving her a choice. And we all would have done the same as him.

      Love the semantics of asking for permission when the survival of humanity is in question. The reason for ep 2 was to setup a similar scenario where decisions need to be made at the expense of humankind's survival. The doctor was willing to sacrifice herself, family, and surrounding city to protect humankind from this. Maybe they should have sent out a mass email poll to get everyone's consensus. Funny how when it's our favorite selfish, homicidal protagonist, it's okay to forget about sacrificing the few for the good of the many. Also, we never got to see Marlene and her people's journey across the country and the trials & tribulations of father's and mothers that made their own personal sacrifices for the good of humanity. Anyone accepting Joel's decision should not have any reservations about the consequences that decisions have in the future.

    He was talking to a guy who had just played through that scene in the game
    He said that the very first thing most kids should remember is going to the zoo, and seeing animals
    Ellie didn't have that. So for this to happen after the episode with David

      What do you choose then? If you would do anything to protect your children, would you let Ellie die? If yes, Joel's actions are suddenly counter to your own. If no, then you wouldn't do everything to protect your children.

He killed Marlene at the end because he knew exactly what Ellie's decision would be even though she wasn't a threat (outside of possibly informing Ellie of her option). Ellie even foresaw that when she stated that she wanted to see this journey out to its end no matter what. Ep 2's doctor willing to sacrifice herself, family and surrounding city was shown to contrast someone willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the good of humanity like Ellie to someone like Joel who was only focused on himself. Funny considering Joel was a soldier understanding the good of the many outweigh those of the few.

      @Olochgu 7 місяців тому +1

      @@uhwaykin It is indicated in the story, both in the show and in the game. They never directly say it, but it is very clear in the subtext. Especially in the giraffe scene. Ellie needs her immunity to mean something, and if it took her life too, then so be it.
      I also don't think it would be morally right to ask Ellie to make this sacrifice. She is a 14-year-old girl suffering from severe PTSD and survivors guilt, and the idea of dying to save the world has that teenaged romanticism to it. She is definitely not in the right mental state to properly make such a decision.
      I like playing devil's advocate on this topic because I don't believe there is a right answer here. I can see and understand both the pov of the fireflies and of Joel. And I can see that both parties fundamentally violated Ellie's right to choose.

In the game, outside of a VERY brief section where Joel wakes up and walks for a bit, we don't really experience the effects of him slowly healing. He immdiately gets into a gunfight and starts moving like he normally does. In a cutscene, he will show some effects of still recovering, but that's it cuz in gameplay he is perfectly okay. Getting to see him properly struggle at all points in this episode of the show was pretty cool.
