I am so impressed with the way you present all the history that is represented in your GP Legends events. I am 78 years old. I started sim racing around 1990 and have been involved ever since. I find your work so special as you recreate racing history in a way that make me appreciate the opportunity all sim racers have to virtually experience what we have always fantasized about - what it's like to race in these fantastic cars and hear your thinking as you take us on a quite realistic experience from a drivers point of view. No one else does it like you. I'm a devoted fan and look forward to every event you share with us. Keep up this great work!
Finished 5th once in a full 100 lap, 100% realistic settings with the original 67 cars. May have not been a podium but sure felt like a victory. Another great video GPLaps!
@@Just_lift_anyone It's a looong time ago- could have been the Eagle though (I didn't choose the Brabham very often, even if it was the easiest car to do well with)
Good driver this Richie Axelson,a lot of potential I see in him. Also his rivalry with Bandini is really one of a kind, respect between the drivers.A rivalry which surpasses the Prost-Senna rivalry everyone should pay attention to it.
Maan, so many years have passed. I remember reading about this in an old IT magazine with my cousin back in the day, they were calling it " the most realistic simulation of all time". I didn't have the equipment back than, I didn't have the money for a gaming peripheral, let alone PC. But we were so young and enthusiastic about everything. Now I have a decent PC with a decent wheel, I have all the available sims in my Steam library, but my cousin and his family don't want to talk to me and my folks anymore due to some idiotic financial disputes. Life is so short and sad.
48:00 A bit LOTR Gandalf there. "Catching another car for position at the end of the race, but I'm already so weary". AMAZING racing. What a splendid Xmas present.
Ahead of Richie: 4 WDCs (and 7 motorbike world championships for good measure.) Behind Richie: 9 WDCs. Other than Phil Hill and Emerson Fittipaldi, literally every WDC from 1959 to 1973 in this race. What an era.
Woah, im looking forward for the rest of the races! When I had a rough depression couple years ago, your GPL vids with F1 seasons were like a chill safe space for me man... Thanks!
I can understand exactly what you mean. Great videos like this can bring home some enjoyment. Not only good racing, but quality work with the narrative from GP.
“McLarens painted white … in some collaboration with a movie” 😹 more than just an odd footnote. Frankenheimer’s amazing dive into the cockpit (& beds) of 66 GP racing is more real than life at times.
I heard somwhere that Bandini was a consultant on the movie and that he was the one to suggest the Monaco chicane crash scene. The same place Bandini would die in a crash the next year. Not sure if that's true of course, it could all be mythmaking after the fact.
Fabulous race GPLaps. I watched the whole thing as it was so exciting. The render of Monaco is just sublime. I downloaded GPL using your video tutorial and it is near impossible for me so hats off to your driving skills. I am so impressed with GPL - the graphics may not be state-of-the-art but the immersion and realism is 100%!
For a game from 1998, Grand Prix Legends was very detailed. Even the gear shifting was animated, even if it was a frame earlier than the hand touching it.
I love the attention to detail in this series. He says they just had enough time to splash some navy paint on the old Brabham chassis and then from the in-cockpit view you can see the original green paint that it had from the race at Silverstone. Fantastic.
I came across this channel by accident. I don’t know much of anything about auto racing history. But I’m starting to love the pre game pre race narration of these videos.
I read an article in Road & Track about Monaco. How people would just step out of a bar with a drink and be 4 feet away from the race cars. Must have been awesome. Thank you so much, I enjoy watching you race.
Pushing all the way, there was some really good driving there. And you held it together under a lot of pressure at the end. Good job. Might well have got you drive of the day. Well deserved 3rd place :).
Happy New Year from Melbourne Australia Richie and family. You are the Bob Ross of sim racing to me. Thanks for your enthusiasm. I was born in 1953, Jim Clark was my childhood hero. It's great to see someone of your age with so much respect and knowledge for this era of racing. Cheers Steve
absolutely fanatastic racing my friend! I love all your onboard commentary and pre and post-race talk. Reminds me so much of my scalextric days back in the 70's ;)
Great race! Looking forward to Spa. I just did a '65 race there with the Weather Patch. Not seeing more than 50 metres in front of you all the way from Raidillon to Stavelot is a very humbling experience.
So great to watch a full Race with background story on this track. I remember when the first screenshots from GPLEA for the new Monaco came out, we were so stunned by the level of detail implemented, and sooo exited to finally try it out after months of waiting. I was sporting a microsoft Sidewinder FFB wheel at the time and we had to be happy to get around 25-30 fps out of the pimped GPL.
Love your videos. Always informative and interesting, as well as great driving. You really bring the period to life for someone who has no memories of it himself.
Bravo, bloody brilliant race to have on in the background whilst doing some data entry for work. Look forward to the next one, esp if you end up in the new car and then have to get use to how different it can feel.
If four-year-old me had only gone into Blockbusters one afternoon with my dad and spotted Grand Prix Legends on the shelf...I mean, the quality of this game, in a time when I played Gran Turismo 2 and saw myself as a driving god - even better than the great Ricardo Hammondi - was outrageously good.
That was great viewing Jake, every time I watch one of these videos, I feel like immediately firing up GPL. The AI still amazes me after all these years.
I think it's brilliant the way you comment and the ton of information you provide in the races . Very enjoyable. What sim are you using , is it Assetto Corsa. Keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍
As usual, amazing job and a lot of information. Btw, I'm wondering if there are some information about which tyre brand was better in the 60s, Firestone or GoodYear?
thats a good question, tire development was at a fast pace. Don’t forget Dunlop too who actually provided the most tires. I know the width of tires especially at the rear was increasing. And slicks were already starting to be carried over from drag racing to formula cars in the US, although it would be a few years until they appeared in f1
Seems to me you favor a oversteer setup, while most of the cars ahead seem more stiff. Is that the case? Would it be not a good idea to have a less loose rear end to try exit corners closer to whos ahead? Great racing, anyway! This game is insanely difficult, and you do an awesome job!
Great start to the season, you may have annoyed a couple of your fellow racers though. Love the detail of the hasty paint job not covering the green in the cockpit from the last race 🤩
Hoping you do a, 'Good Ol Play' with SnowRunner at some point. Would be a great interactive viewer decision on next objective missions for that incredible game. This video is a masterpiece, wonderful explanation of the set-up for the 1966 Monte Carlo Grand Prix. (PS. Do the a play of the Hall of Fame game - Ferrari F355 Challenge one day from Sega).
Hey Jake, Steam is having a big sale right now until January 5th. I'm tempted to get AM2 because of the new CART mod but don't know what DLC's I should get with it. Maybe you could do a video on the Steam sale from the perspective a sim racer who is into historic mods. It seems like our taste in seem to closely align. Thanks!
Fun to watch! How do you miss a shift in a game like this? Do you have 3 pedals and a shifter? Still you're driving great, just watching I'm nervous hah. Does the game or any others allow or support double clutching / double de-clutching? That would be so cool. I'm thinking of getting a gaming rig to try historic racing, I want 1961 F1 season, and others of course. looks so fun!
1966 the South African GP the traditional Round 1 was cancelled as with the switch to the 3.0 litre formula it would have been impossible to raise a field in South Africa so R1 was at Monaco
I need some advice on how to get GPL working again in this day in age. Currently still on Win7x64 even after they dropped support. But soon going to be with Win10 finally since I'm building a new rig. Any links you can share would be greatly appreciated.
Would that be Bob Bondurant second to last on the grid along side Bruce Mclaren? I knew his name probably before just about anyone except maybe Mario Andretti.
Sorry to post again but I have a question this time. The results sheet had you using car #46 as in the other races but graphically you were 22. Does the sim not allow you to change your own car number?
unfortunately the number in sim is hardcoded for each mod. I don’t think #46 was run at all in 1966 which is why it was chosen. I just decided to go with #22 which was the next unused number on the entry list

Haha same thing happened to me over one of the covid lockdowns. Fast forward 2 years and I ended up buying a sim racing setup myself. So much fun!!
That last battle for third once it was clear it was possible was beyond exiting, specially after passing him the racing felt so hard.
