David Goggins: How to Build Immense Inner Strength

  • Опубліковано 8 тра 2024
  • In this episode, my guest is David Goggins, retired Navy SEAL, highly accomplished ultramarathoner, best-selling author, and influential public speaker.
David explains how he mastered his inner dialogue to build extraordinary levels of discipline and mental and physical toughness.
He describes how confronting his early hardships, including physical and mental abuse, learning disorders, and obesity, became a practice of deep and excruciating self-reflection - eventually allowing him to transmute those experiences into a superhuman work ethic.
This conversation is a unique window into David Goggins’ process in that it focuses both on the underlying science and how David manages and directs his inner dialogue.
It’s a conversation that will inform and inspire anyone wondering how exactly to go about building discipline and confidence and reach their potential.
Note: This conversation includes profanity. Some content might not be suitable for all audiences and ages.

2 months later, this episode literally changed my life. I go for the suck everyday, working out 6 days a week, signed up for half an ironman, and keep on fighting everyday for that perishable skill.

Theres more. You have to do it alone there will be no one in your corner while you work they will only be there after you achieve success.
Be upfront to your loved ones about your intentions and share your goals with them so they know what to expect after you take care of ALL of their needs.
If you want to keep the mindset you have then youll need to continue to do those things you hate to do not just the ones you enjoy.
If you ever get stuck in life you need to switch up how you are motivating yourself because youre aiming for the same thing everyday and you need to switch how you do it in order to finish the end result without fail.

I’ve listened to this podcast probably 5 times already, read both of his books (including currently reading Never Finished for the third time), and this man is a class act, defying all odds. One hard motherfucker. Every time I complain my life is hard, or how my childhood “set me up for failure” I humble that little bitch inside of me real quick. There’s no damn excuses. This man went through his childhood being beat by his own father, seeing people he loved die all around him, and dealt with sickening racism and how did he answer his fucked up childhood? Going from being obese and letting his demons eat him alive to chasing those mother fucking demons, losing over 100 pounds in 3 months, joining the Navy Seals, going through 3 hell weeks in a year, running over 200 mile runs, and that’s just naming a few of his accomplishments. I’m just at the start of project: get my damn life together, and this man’s story is truly inspiring to anyone going through hard times, or those who grew up with a rough childhood that drags them down to this day. Goggins, you’re one bad motherfucker. Stay hard. I look forward to meeting you one day, brother.

"I realized that my entire life was gonna be a struggle, so I ignored it". For all the neurotic people like me out there, this is the best advice possible. Just accept that you're always going to be anxious and miserable, and use it as a fuel to do something worthwhile. Thank you, David Goggins and Dr. Huberman for an immensely inspiring episode.

    • @feseabra3479
      @feseabra3479 4 місяці тому +72

Benjamin, it's not about accepting anxiety and misery. Nobody bares being miserable all the time. It's about taking responsability for it. Doing something about it. Making the best of it. Anxiety- when disfunctional- is about feeling small compared to fears, challenges and possibilities. The job is to grow up and become stronger. If you put too much focus on the struggle, you'll miss all the oportunities of growth. Read Tara Brach's "Radical Acceptance". It's an amazing book.

All this journey, all alone, was so difficult but this book helped me to develop my own voice, to be my own cheerleader. I also understand when he says « I have to do it because I am not like this » he have to show up everyday to not return to David Goggins. I feel that in my soul because it’s the same for me. I was lazy, I was not able to finish what I’ve started, I had plenty of traumas to heal, I was weak AF… Now I show up everyday and it’s crazy the effect it had on my brain. When you're at a point in your life that you've been kicked down so much you hold emotion back. Amen to goggins we need more podcasts like this! People need to get up off the couch turn off the TV and go out for a purpose what is that purpose for some people it's helping others for some people is going to college and getting an education and sharing that education with others or writing a book like goggins it's whatever that you have the heart and passion for! This is a phenomenal podcast! My bad piece of shit is all I heard as a child My brother beat in the head with a 2x4 but he's still joined the Marine corps he spent 7 months in boot camp mentally challenged. Hey I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future.

This reminded me of a girl who had down's syndrome, and scored the best math exam result when I was a teenager attending school. The math teacher was furious because this girl had exposed all of us. Everything was so hard for her that she had to apply additional discipline to stay level with us. Except in this case she surpassed us all. If we all had failed the exam it cold have been argued that it was too hard, or something went wrong with the lessons. But she outshined us all, and made clear that we were just not disciplined enough.

Still, your example does highlight the power of a strong will and discipline!

This whole podcast my biggest take-away has been:
"I'm wasting time listening to this podcast - I know what I have to do, but instead I'm doing exactly what Goggins is describing - I'm wasting time listening and theorizing instead of getting up and getting after it."
I'm the "I'll go at the quarter hour" kind of person Andrew described. I love my downtime too much. Goggins inspires me more than I inspire myself, and I think that's the problem I (and many others) have. Goggins is telling us to leave him alone as much as possible and go do what we know we ought to as much as possible.
    Thanks Goggins, and thanks Andrew.
    I'm gonna go now.
    Happy 2024, folks.

This conversation about willpower and the anterior mid-cingulate cortex is amazing. Very much explains and summarises why/how we can build really good habits and maintain them for months, but if you take the gas off and 2-3 weeks goes by where you slip, then you REALLY feel that suck again when you try and restart. You feel the aversion all over again. That inner voice to not bother with going to the gym, eating well, whatever, just gets a bit more loud. Really eye opening and helps explain something we all feel when either trying to self motivate or sit and watch Netflix.

After reading Goggins “Can’t Hurt Me” it changed my life. I was stuck in a bad place inside my mind. I limited myself and my beliefs. I was hanging drywall, hating my job. Didn’t think I could be anything more. After reading his book, I was so inspired that at 27 I decided to go to college for the first time. I told myself for yearssssss I was never good at school I could never do it, but after his book I stopped believing that bullshit. I’m currently going for my associates degree, looking to graduate the PTA program. 3.92 GPA, and I’m focused as fuck! It’s not easy, and there are sacrifices that have to be made every day to keep pursuing my college career. But it’s fucking worth it. When Goggins says in this interview, some will understand me and grow from this guy. That’s exactly what I did. Thank you Goggins for everything you do and the inspiration you give so many people. I believe God, or whoever your higher power is, works through people. And that’s what’s happening with Goggins here. Let’s fucking GO!!!

I just went back to the series that Andrew Huberman did with Dr. Paul Conti.
David Goggins is practitioner of those, if not most of what the essence of the lessons were.
    - being haunted is being driven
    - he asked himself the right questions, to give himself the right life.
    - opening up all the cabinets to find an answer to the deepest questions which will free you and help you manifest happiness.
Thank you so much guys. You are arguably amongst the important life teachers of our time.

I've got a mystery form of retinitis pigmentosa which basically means I'm going blind. Every day is a battle to want to survive, and then survive, and then to make something of myself. And stupid as it is, David makes me so glad to feel like I'm not alone. There's a hardness that becomes part of you, and I'm tired of being so tough, but there's something in me that refuses to give up. I ain't letting go. And he gives me hope that one day I'll find myself in the company of people who understand me.

As Goggins said, you do a great job taking the parts of his process that he struggles to put into words, and making it cohesive and understandable. This has to be the greatest Goggins/Huberman conversation/interview, to date. Thank you both for your willingness to be vulnerable, forthright, honest, and for the teamwork to piece all of this together.

This has paved a new path for me. I came to rewatch some parts and wow, I can't believe it's been less than 2 month. Been working on my amcc since I've seen it and I don't know how to explain it but I completely got rid of my "laziness". I don't even understand, I can't even remember how I was ever the way i was. It feels like so long ago already. I started little by little, as I noticed something I ignored. Like making my bed, seeing dishes and thinking "ugh I don't want do that rn", I'd remember what this pod talked about and I'd force myself to do them. Little by little it turned to bigger things like exercise, meditation, reading. Also you really do become way better at recognizing everything that you neglect or think "ugh I don't feel like doing that" or "I'll do that later" and you start to just do it. As someone who used to play alot of video games, its almost like a game, training a skill, getting better at training it, earning xp and leveling it up. I'm so thankful to have came across this.

I am so glad that God made David Goggins the way he is because what David Goggins lives and teaches is by far the realest information that anyone needs to not only hear but INGEST....un-cut, raw and in your face truth. This game (life) is between you and you...period. Willingness and grit to do hard things, especially when they are hardest for you to do, is the start of all great things! This is the punch in the face that I needed today, right now, the circumstances I'm in were created by me, I can create new (better) things IF I DECIDE. I realized that I used to be my own version of David Goggins, then I got soft and destroyed everything I worked hard to build. Thank you for this interview, I needed to hear this right here and right now. This may be the best interview I have ever heard...TYTYTY. The part that's discussing relationships.....gold!
