      When I got this bike early last Spring nobody could tell me if the 690 and 701 shared a common countershaft sprocket.....Just tried to order one today (14T) so I'm interested to see what they come back with. At 14/48 you'd be lower than I am now - not all bad but you better have some really steep hills or you won't need it that low......

    Good Call on the Case Saver, need one for my 990, I broke my chain and broke a bunch of stuff, Clutch Slave, Center clutch push rod and broke a lot of small
    bolts off in the case. Got Lucky I suppose

    How's the mantinance on the 701 Clark?

  • @clarkrupp
    @clarkrupp  6 років тому

    Well I found out the air filter was never meant to be used off road. For off-road the oil needs to be changed every 1K - 1.5K miles. Throw away the stock airbox and go with foam filter. See my other video about bypass dongle -....Other than that it seems fine.

    Great review, I debated going with a >48t sprocket, but decided to go down 1t on the front after smoking my clutch ... 14/48 seems to be working very well for me.

      Everybody I talked to said there were no other countershaft sprocket sizes available for a 2017 701. I would have preferred to drop a tooth there rather than buy new rear sprockets and chains every time....

  • @OhioPrepperOne

    I’m looking at getting a dual sport bike this year and the XR650L seems like the best bang for the buck. It’s only 2 pounds more than this bike and almost half the price. That leaves plenty of cash for new tires, exhaust, carb mod etc. The Husky appeals to me with the EFI and ABS, but not to the tune of 5000 dollars more than the Honda, thoughts?

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  7 років тому +4

      That Honda will go almost anywhere the Husky will go. The difference is how fast do you want to get there ? If that's important forget about the Honda. And what you want to add in "extras" for the Honda you'll probably want to do on the Husky. I had to put an additional $3K into the bike to get it where I wanted it. The Honda will go twice as far on a tank of gas - something I would be envious of. You get bent out of shape on the Honda and you're probably going to end up in the dirt. Get bent of shape on the Husky and you'll think you're a motorcycle god for not doing a face plant. The chassis and suspension can't even be compared but if you're never going to push the Husky hard enough you'll never need all the expensive engineering anyway. Bottom line is what kind of riding are you going to do. The guys that push as hard as me on the dirt are on full blown dirt bikes. The dual sport bike guys like the off road stuff until it gets too hard - which is where the dirt bike guys start to have fun. I live in a very unique area so I'm able to capitalize on a truly competent dual sport bike - most I think do 80/20 on the road/off road. Even will all my efforts to stay off road I'm lucky to do 40/60 on road/off road. The biggest reason for the Husky is that 74 hp motor.

    • @OhioPrepperOne
      @OhioPrepperOne 7 років тому

      Clark Rupp Thanks Clark for your detailed reply, much appreciated sir. It looks to me from your videos that the riding was basically technical single track and dirt/gravel roads. I’m older now, 54, but when I was young, I rode a WR500 that had a reworked shock and forks from Racetech and I rode mostly on motocross tracks doing double jumps and trying to just go fast. I never got good enough to race and then I started having back issues which surgery fixed for me and I feel good now. I don’t plan on doing doubles again or anything crazy but I do want to have fun in the woods etc. 74 hp versus 42 - 48 hp with a new carb is a big difference, not mention the suspension, chassis, ABS and EFI. My heart says 701 and my brain says 650...... I suppose, I could go 650 and if I am still wanting more they have a good resale value I suppose lol. Thanks for your insight, great videos btw.

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  6 років тому +1

      Yup.... I could ride 90% of these trails on my 705 KLR - modifies suspension et all but still you'll never turn a pig into a beauty queen.

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  6 років тому

      KLR ran out of oil from to engine damage in 60 miles.. so forward with the 705 kit. 50K miles on original 2008 motor so i arguably got my money's worth on the first go -round. I still use the KLR to run to the store etc so I save some wear on the Husky's tires....I have spent over $3K on the Husky to get it where i wanted it.

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  6 років тому

      I wouldn't put that much into a KLR or anything but the Husky needed a lot of help if it was going to work off-road. There's an upcharge for everything Husky so maybe something to keep in mind

    you tell at the beginning of you video, that you using nuetech tubliss. Does they fitt at the original 701 rims?
    nuetech say, the they fitt only till 1,6" in the front or 2,15 " in the rear, but the husky has 1,85 " front and 2,5" in the rear.

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  7 років тому +1

      That's why I also indicate that you HAVE to use the MAXXIX desert tire. The bead wall is thicker than any other tire and will allow it to seal tight. Hold tight for a couple of days...... I'm going to make a video just on this topic. I'll spell out in detail the exact issues and how it works with this bike..

    When you went to the 51T sprocket, did you have to lengthen the chain?

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  6 років тому

      New chains with all the sprockets I tried. I now have a good new chain inventory ! Turns out the countershaft sprocket is the same configuration as the KTM Duke so I now have a smaller CS sprocket in stock so hopefully I can use some of those smaller rear sprockets with new chains - after the motor gets put back together....... It blew up last month and I'm battling with Husky over the warranty - or lack thereof.

    Great info!! Nice to see the 15/51 gearing in action. Seems to still be plenty fast for the tarmac. What rear tire are you using in the video?

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  7 років тому +1

      I am using the Tubliss system from Neutech.com Maxxis dessert tire with 4 lbs of air. Uploading another video now.....

    • @Hanks1941
      @Hanks1941 7 років тому

      Thanks Clark. I'm definitely going with the TUbliss system. Wasn't sure about the 15/51 until I saw your video. I was thinking about the Motoz tractionator desert for the rear, still undecided though.

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  7 років тому

      If you go Tubliss you HAVE to use Maxxis - no choice as the tires wont seal. I actually tried the MotoZ as I had just bought one - wouldn't seal up but sold it to my buddy with a 650 XR

    • @Hanks1941
      @Hanks1941 7 років тому

      You are not using enough soapy water then. There are many people with 701's using motoz, goldentyre, and all sorts of tires with the TUbliss system. Wouldn't be worth it or make sense to be limited to only one brand of tire.

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  7 років тому

      Oldbikes4ever it's due to the 2.50" rim.... worked directly with the President of the company. The Maxxis bead is 1.5mm thicker than the MotoZ and TKC 80. That's 3mm combined sides less gap to fill with wide rim. Tubliss is not DOT and it's not a question of designed to work with one brand. It's designed for off road bikes only and the big bikes have 2.15" rim. That's why only the Maxxis works..... By all means though, try what tire you want use - just check the return policy before you buy!

    i heard you mention rev limiter, do you know what its set at stock? do you know if you need a power commander to change it?

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  7 років тому

      If I am to believe the marketing inf,o the redline on the 2017 was raised to 9,000 rpm - up 1,000 rpm from the the '16 model. I would have to assume the rev limiter is set there or maybe 500 rpm beyond that. The power drops off before that point but it happens so fast on loose dirt that I was hitting it. I can't imagine the need to raise it any more than that - that's one huge piston in there......

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  6 років тому +1

      No issue if you keep it on road. If you go off in the dirt you must run a foam air filter. Change oil every 1,000 miles.

    I run NUETECH TUBLISS on a highly modded 1988 Vinduro. Golden Tyre rear Big Daddy up front.
    I don't know how you can run 12psi. That's huge, even on wide open desert runs I wouldn't push 5psi in a million years.
    That sounds standard on heavy duty tubes NOT tubeless. Maybe check your forums or Nuetech. Have I lost your interpretation in conversion. Inner RED tube 100psi, outer Tyre or normal valve 2-4psi.
    For your experience why not drop that 12psi even further. Just sayin

    • @clarkrupp
      @clarkrupp  7 років тому

      I think we're saying the same thing...... Actually I'm running 125 psi nitrogen in the tubliss inner tubes. The front tire has nowhere the sidewall strength of the rear tire. At 12 psi in the front I'm stable on the asphalt and sticky in the dirt with good sidewall flex. The rear tire is simply ridiculous. It's nearly bald and still hooks up at less than half throttle. The ground right now is like concrete with pebbles on top. My recent rides have been scouting exercises so I'm not worried about maximum grip at max throttle. An argument could be made that a low pressure fat footprint tire will provide better traction on surfaces hard enough that knobs cannot dig into at all.
