  • If you have weird lines or other artifacts on your monitor and/or your PC keeps crashing under high GPU load, you might have a faulty graphics card. You can try to fix it by reflowing the graphics and VRAM chips as we show in this video.

    This will be a permanent fix ONLY if the issue is on the VRAM chips. And you will never know, because you did the reflow on both the GPU chip and the VRAM chips as well. Louis Rossman has made a video about reflow and reball.

    • @TheLucidDreamer12

      There's another case where this is a permanent fix. If you get your GPU transported long distances, the changes in climate can cause the hygroscopic components to accumulate water. A GPU that's not acclimated will also malfunction. A blast from the heat gun can help the GPU restore a baseline level of water content and acclimate correctly, which was the case for my broken R9 270

    • @Dandan-tg6tj
      @Dandan-tg6tj 2 місяці тому

      @@TheLucidDreamer12 Yep. Sometimes a little dirt under the GPU accumulates a little bit of moist and by heating it, it is becoming dry again so it won't actually be electrically conductive no more and the "fault" would go away.

    • @Dandan-tg6tj
      @Dandan-tg6tj 2 місяці тому

      @@derekp9737 Definitely not. The cards often get moist under the GPU (a little bit of very fine dirt particles can hold some moist and this are messing the functioning of the GPU). By heating the GPU you dry that moist up and your card will start working again. There is no way that huge GPU chip would have melted solder balls under it without a heating plate and a temperature around 400-500 Celsius of the hot air. At 300 Celsius without a heating plate, there's simply impossible to melt the solder balls.
      Smaller chips like for GTX 650 or GTX 750 may be reflowed only by using a hot air station but that chip, no way.

    • @KrupsFilms
      @KrupsFilms  4 роки тому +4

      The tape is heat resistant tape which, as the name suggests, can withstand the heat the hot air gun generates. The first liquid is liquid no-clean soldering flux that helps the solder under the graphics chip form proper solder joints with the board and that also doesn't have to be cleaned before using the GPU.

    This method isn't actually what fixes the card. That kind of artifacting means a dead/dying core or vram bank. Reflowing the solder does not fix that. It just messes with the inside of the dying chip to give it a little more life. To properly fix an issue like that you need to replace a chip.

    There's absolutely no way you were able to melt the solder balls under THAT GPU. That's a type of GPU you need heating table and a pretty powerful air soldering station. More like there was dirt under the GPU and by heating it, you managed to dry that thingie so now, electrically, it does not do what it did before. That's the only way this may work.

So depending on how valuable you faulty gpu is, it might or might not be worth it. • @Dandan-tg6tj

      That was probably a fix, for a while. The dirt under the GPU chip probably got some moisture messing with the functioning of the GPU chip so when he dried it, the card started working again. Anyway, that dirt is not gone and eventually will accumulate moisture again. Reballing the chip would definitely clean that dirt so yes, reballing the core is the right thing to do.

      If lowering the clocks helps, this fix will most likely not work. Silicon degrades over time, and if you can't sustain as high clock speeds as before, it is most likely due to that, and not your solder joints going bad.

      Unless you physically removed the voltage limits and over volted your card, no on screen overclocking will physically damage your card, that is a myth. Unless you over volt the card by removing built in safety limits by doing a vcard bios flash then all you need do is remove the OC software and then boot back into windows reinstall that OC software and use better settings.

    For the love of all that is good and holy, don't do this. It's a real, true fix about 5% of the time. In 95% of cases you outright destroy the card, making it unable to be fixed from it's fixable fault OR you heat the GPU chip enough to temporarily make the short go away...but it will come back and heating it will stop working even temporarily.
    Again, 5% of the time the issue is a damaged/cracked/disconnected solder joint in or under the GPU chip. 5% MAYBE, I'd actually call it lower but I'll go with 5%.
    Don't do this if you actually want to fix your card. Take the money you would spend on a heat gun and buy a multimeter. Learn how to use it, learn how to diagnose faulty GPUs and enjoy fixing your card for good and a cool new hobby.
    Baking your GPU is for absolute amateurs and is up there with wrapping your Xbox 360 in a towel to fix RROD, lol.

      @@rottenfist220 Just because it works for you does not automatically increase the success rate of the entire procedure. What likely occured is a temporary fix as he mentioned. To permanently and properly fix the card, learn how to diagnose it, and find the chip that needs to be replaced. Look up "Mats and Mods VRAM test", it's a great place to start with VRAM diagnosis. Unfortunately it only works for Nvidia cards though.

    I had same problem. After I made steps in this video the graphic card started OK. But only for one day.
    Then after I start PC it make 1 long and 3 short beeps (= Graphic card error) and screen is still black but from speakers i hear that the Windows is started. When I removed graphic card and use integrated one, then PC worked properly.
    Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

      Unfortunately, this is the nature of reflowing. It might work for a very long time, or, like in your case, work only for a day. But, 1 day is a very short time. I think you didn't heat it enough when reflowing. You could try reflowing it again with more heat.

      @@KrupsFilms you should mainly make complete reball, not just reflow

    • @hexadecimal1517
      @hexadecimal1517 2 роки тому +1

      better go for a reball. As long as it displays the GPU chip should be fine. It's really hard to do without a rework station lead free solder is tough to melt. You will also need a stencil for the specific GPU and lead balls.

    • @omega7628
      @omega7628 3 роки тому +1

      No, reflowing usually give you a few days to a few month at max, there has been cases where it has completely fixed the issue but it's russian roulette.
