  • When your GPU starts artifacting or giving out green lines, you might think it's time to upgrade, however there are a few unorthodox ways which might allow you to fix your broken GPU.
    Today I'm trying my best on a Zotac GTX 1080 Ti, wish me luck!
    Also if you wanna hear what broke this GPU and how to prevent it from happening to your GPu, you might wanna check out this video:

    The artifacting before/after was definitely different. Next time, try a more traditional Oven-based DIY Reflow, which would reflow the solder by bringing the entire board up to temp and leverage surface tension to pull the components back into their proper position.
    Word of caution for anyone wanting to water their GPU, probably a good idea to use a scrap motherboard/cpu/ram/PSU. We've seen graphics cards that have gone bad nuke the entire connected platform, and that was WITHOUT watering :)
    Loved the video, keep up the good work.

    Hi dude, What is the best Thermal pasthe for RYZEN Gaming laptop ? ARTIC mx6 or TF7 or TF8 or TF9 or Grizzly extreme or Grizzly metal liquid ?

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  3 місяці тому +2

      The overall best for performance would be liquid metal of course, but you do need to apply it two times and if it spills it's game over. My personal pick would be MX-6, to be honest!

    I brought my gpu back to life in a similar manner around 8 years ago. There was no point sending it to a specialist as the card wasn't worth much. I put my card in the oven for around 15-20 minutes at around 250C. I placed the card in an elevated position on folded aluminium foil so it wasn't touching any components(important) on the bottom side of the card. To my surprise... it worked. It's worth squeezing some flux around apu so it will just reflow itself. I fixed my lenovo legion the same way, however it only worked for about 6 months. Tape over plastic parts so the connectors don't melt. Worth trying when there is no other option.

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  3 місяці тому +1

      100%! What you said about flux is something that very few people know and is actually key for a good reflow :) Another key part is getting the GPU cleaned up before melting the solder, which is where the watering part comes is!

    Nice video. The heatgun method usually works well when the gpu is on its last leg and, even in that case the repair is not permanent. On the other hand, visual artifacts usually mean video memory issues, and cannot be fixed that easily.

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks a lot for the support and yes, I 100% agree with you. This very DIY reflow method has a higher success rate on the core, in my experience. But I do have brought back a few GPUs with memory issues in this way too, so it's always worth a shot!

      For a perfect reflow
      1. Remove cooler, pads and paste
      2. Clean/flush under BGA chip with acetone
      3. Clean/flush under BGA chip with Isapropyl Alcohol
      3. Apply Kapton tape to all components around BGA chip that could fail from thermal stress
      4. Apply liquid flux (reflow flux) underneath BGA chip
      5. Preheat board (PCB) evenly on a "hotplate"
      6. Create a thermal step-up profile (written or automatic if software controlled) according to the size and thermal properties of the board/BGA/soldertype for the Hot air soldering appliance you are using
      7. Reflow BGA chip
      8. Step down hotplate heat by 40°c per 5 minutes
      Let cool completely for an hour minimum before test
      If it does not work resolder the BGA chip or possibly replace chip if chip-internal silicon-to-package (lead free) solder has produced whiskers/microcracks that cannot be reflowed

      Distilled water also works great and reduces the chance of you doing a step wrong and accidentally breaking your card, since it's also non conductive. It is a bit more expensive but definitely worth noting, thanks for the comment and for watching! :)

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes! I don't quite feel comfortable in using my own dishwasher because I feel like the chemicals on the GPU would end up in my plate, but I'd love to give it a try maybe before swapping dishwasher. Same reason why I don't use the oven to reflow GPUs. Drying up with isopropyl is 100% key!

    Nice try my guy. It's maybe worth trying this method if there is nothing more to be done. Getting rid of all the dust and giving some real heat afterwards towards the card may revive the GPU back. Thanks for the video :) One question though, is green lines the only defect on the GPU? I mean can you still render videos or 3D stuff just fine out of it or does it affect the result?

    • @MuhlisErtugrul

I've done that a lot in my videos as well and you actually improve the cooling too, compared to the stock fans. Get a good brand like Arctic and you'll be fine :)

      It doesn't matter on a gpu bro.
      Not only is the die massive compared to a cpu, gpus suffer from pump out so much more than cpus, so after a time of thermal cycling, that thermal paste will just work it's way out anyway.

    • @ImWateringPSUs
      @ImWateringPSUs  3 місяці тому

      The paste application was indeed TERRIBLE. But it didn't really matter as it's non-conductive paste, the only bad it did was waste a bit of paste. That was also to bust another myth :)
