  • Journalist and podcaster Adrianne Murchison kicks off a limited series on the now-closed Atlanta jazz club Cafe 290. In Part 1, she's joined by former owner John Scatena and musician Joe Gransden, and looks back at others who took the stage at the nationally-known club. For 40 years, Cafe 290 was known as the go-to place to hear top-notch musicians perform. The live music club was many things to patrons who flocked there. Anything could happen at Cafe 290 on any given night. With The Punchline comedy club located across the parking lot for years, countless celebrities stopped in the music club.

Wow! This brought back so many great memories. Well Done Adrianne! It's great to hear John's voice. I didn't realize how much I miss the family. It really hit me when Joe said, "Our Home Base is Gone" 😥MAN!

Gary, Thanks so much! It means a lot that you like it and also took part in this! It is indeed so hard to believe the place is gone.

Well done Adrianne, this is a great piece. Great to hear from Johnny again. Big hole in our hearts since 290 closed. Such a shame, but you brought out all the positive memories. I look forward to the next piece. 🎼🎺🎷🎤🎶

I was a regular from 1981 to around 1990. Wonderful memories of the staff, owners, musicians, and friends at The Punch Line.

Dan Coy, and Octavia Jones held down the Sunday night Jazz Jam for many years.

You were there in the early, early days! That place had so much history for people.

@@letsstarthealingpodcast7780 First time I dropped in in 1981, it was like a small L shaped place with a piano at the corner. Berné was singing with a jazz piano player, like a dream to a 20 year old kid from the country. Then they leased the next unit which squared it out to make room for a stage, bar, and dinners. Later they leased the back sports bar area. Always a great place to bring a date. Smoking was still allowed; later, smoking was only allowed in the sports bar. Sunday nights jazz jams with Dan Coy were always my favorites, never knew who was going to sit in. Almost never a cover charge. My Punch Line friends would usually let me slip in at the back bar for the late show. Saw dozens of comics, many who we would see on Carson or Letterman, often they would come over to Cafe 290 between or after shows. I still remember sitting next to Jerry Seinfeld, he was flanked with pretty girls.
After around 1990, I was busy raising children, working day jobs and couldn't stay out late. Stopped by a few times after that, didn't really know anyone. Hardly recognized Sandy Springs in the later years.

I’m John’s cousin from Pennsylvania but I live in Michigan now. Cafe 290 was a gathering place for our family through the years. My business associates always looked forward to getting together with John.
