Tigers was an honest mistake. Duh. He ended up incriminating himself in the lost press conference which is the only reason anyone knew he took an illegal drop. Obviously if he was cheating, he wouldnt have said a thing and the world would not have known.
Accidentally breaking the rules and cheating are 2 completely different things.

And the PGA has stopped viewers from calling in violations. That means that if the shot is not on camera or an official isn’t standing there, the player can get away with it. This morning I watched a kid that really fought Tiger on his third Amateur win. The Kid (name escapes me) actually reminded Tiger to replace his mark before putting because Tiger had forgotten . If he hadn’t told him , he would have won automatically. The announcers said it was the best sportsmanship act they had ever seen. The kid played only in two PGA events, (I think) didn’t make the cut and that’s it. He took Tiger to extra holes and at one point was six holes ahead.

If any of my golf buddies saw that I did that in our Saturday morning 4some, I would never hear the end of it or be banished by them. In golf, simply, you don't cheat. If you make an illegal move, you call yourself on it. Thats why golf is an honorable sport compared with basketball and soccer and football where they would NEVER call a penalty on themselves. If Reed was unclear on the rules he should have called over a rules official.

That has to be the most egregious, poorly masked case of improving of the lie ever caught on camera. And the that it's by a Masters winner, just adds to how stubborn this will be in the annals of golf. Factor in, though also, that it is a particular player/masters winner with the personality/character narratives surrounding Patrick, and it is liable to dog him, this will, for the rest of his career. Like Fuzzy Zoeller's comment did.

Kevin Cartledge it’s a waste bunker, he can do that. But he had to know he was moving sand away every time he brought his club back. It’s hard to believe a professional would do that. That’s something you do when your just playing for fun.

here's what google says: Waste areas are unmaintained areas of the course, and if you are in one you are allowed to ground your club. You can also take practice swings in the waste area. However, the action of grounding your club and taking practice swings must not improve conditions affecting your stroke (Rule 8.1)

Even beginners know it. It's nothing to do with if Patrick knows it or not. The PGA needs to enforce the rules are applied to each players in the courses rather than monitored by their own caddie. Otherwise, Patrick can do it, Reed can do it, everyone can do it.

I am a complete hacker, and I would have known my club moved sand from behind the ball. Part of the honour in golf is calling yourself on breaking the rules. He CLEARLY knew he did it. No way you can deny 2 sand shuffles. You are a PGA pro, your club is literally an extension of your arm at this point. If he would have called himself on it the first time, no harm done. 2 strokes and move on. But he tried to (literally) sweep it under the rug and that is CHEATING.
