wow, I had never heard this before. That's super easy to understand. Hitting a ball FAT is the worst experience after hitting a nice drive to the middle of the fairway. The game is more enjoyable when you play well obviously.
I'm a beginner and I've been thinning the ball for a year. This fixed my swing almost immediately. My golf buddies were shocked at how quickly my game improved.
Magic. I took this drill to the range today. I had the good fortune to work with a pro that also preaches the “step into the shot” drill. Combined with a reference line, I hit 90% of my shots with ball first contact. I have more work to do, but this was one-session magic. Thank you Clay.

I broke 50 this week, I shot 47 my partner was impressed that I can hit my 3 wood now, and hitting the ball first with my irons. I was a self taught hacker. I watch your videos evry week before golf. You sir are the best teacher on you tube hands down. thanks so much, i`m a much more confident golfer.

It is a great one off guide for revealing an effortless golf swing technique without the headache. I watched this like 6 years ago and it changed my game. At one point I played MP 33 and MP 4 irons and I struck the ball so well. Today I’ve got 718 AP1 and I love them! I’ve shown several buddies this drill, so glad I found this again!
This video changed my golf game. For the first time in my life, I shot under 90! Shot 99 then 2 days later, shot 89 after watching this video. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks Clay! Learned this drill years ago but had forgotten all about it. This is probably the best lesson I ever learned when I started out. If you practice this it will blow your mind how "crisp" you start striking your irons.
Just took this to the driving range and it helped so much! Once you get your muscle memory doing this like he says it’s hard not to take grass. Thanks for the help!
New to golf and have a lot of terrible habits. But this one video has changed a lot of those bad habits. I was always laying back on my back leg until I saw this walk up approach!!!! Awesome video!!!! Thanks!!!
Your videos just always make so much more sense than others. You have a knack for teaching, and putting it into simple and understandable terms anyone can understand. Great work!
Bout damn time the stride makes its way back into golf since Happy. Think on it, the stride enables leg kicks club flips walk offs smoother and all around better entertainment. Great going guy.
Clay, thank you for clean, detailed instruction and demo. One day, and I am hitting straighter and consistently. Not yet m. memory, but getting much better. As a senior (63) golfer, simple changes and techniques make all the difference. Again, great vid and demo, thanks.
I tryed that drill yesterday. Forgot to practice on range prior to the round. But, I took 4-5 practice swings prior to hitting the shot. I shot 78 from the white tees on a course with a slope of 136. I am 70 years old. Hit my driver 230 yards and 7 iron 155. I am going to the range tomorrow to practice,
Really great drill for weight transfer. As a mid - high handicapper this is my largest struggle by far. I have worked on similar drills to get that transfer but this one is extremely basic and very easy the execute. Thanks for sharing this game improving tip.
I just bought a new set of calloway XR irons. Going out to play with them for the first time in about 3 hours. Thank you for all your lessons. My game is improving and I really appreciate it.
Brilliant instruction. In an effort to compress the ball I now realise I have been dropping my right shoulder and hitting behind the ball. A classic tale of one error being created to compensate for another one. Really enlightening video. Thank you.
This is the most useful tip I've ever listened to. Thank you so much! My friend has been telling me to hit down on the ball since last summer, you've finally done a great example. Thank you so much!
I am using this method in all shots now,and am making solid contact most times. Of-course I need more practice to be perfect.Thank you very much for the exceptional lesson.Woods get solid contact, needs more on Iron play.
Recently struggling with solid iron contact. I will definitely try the right shoulder high and forward instead of down and behind. Makes all the sense in the world. Thanks
I have been hitting behind the ball lately...its an absolute killer on distance....heading to the range to try these drills. I just want clean contact, good compression. I can fix alignment later. Good instructions.
Stay away from the driving range. Even a bad swing will work on the driving range. Also take a tip from Bubba Watson and through out alignment thoughts. Its a waist of your journey. Always remember that the swing you find today may not work tomorrow. When you get to the first tee, take two clubs and swing them until you loosen up like an ondeck baseball batter. Once you get over the ball on the first tee find a comfortable setup possition and let it rip. If it works stick with it. If not try something different on your next shot. The only time you should be satisfied with golf is the day you quit it.
Hi Clay(et al!). My golf coach (Sammy Stubbs exPTI RN) put short tees in the ground 1/2”,shaft all the way down, in front of the ball, “don’t hit the ball, dig the tee out of the ground” He would say. Try it!
This video was exactly what I was looking for. Watched it 2-3 times and went to have the best range session I’ve ever had. Played the next day with continued success. Thanks for this video!
This is the explanation I’ve been looking for! Maybe I paid more attention. I’ve always had trouble with hitting my irons crisp like this. I would either hit the ground before the ball or hit it thin with the bottom edge of the club face causing a low ball skimming across the turf in front of me. I might even get the ball to run far enough that I just had a minor chip shot to get on the green. There’s nothing like the feel of a clean effortless contact with the ball and watching it go the distance to drop in on the green.
Wonderful video Clay . . . new English subscriber here. Great content and explanation . . what are these people 'disliking' this thinking ? ? Keep going Clay . . . love it ! !
I gotta say since i started watching Clay Ballards movies i've shaved off 7 points off my hdc since march, this has by far been the most useful of them all, i dont stray off the fairway now at all, my only problem has been the range which seems to fluctuate a bit more with about 20 yards difference, i suspect it has to do with my strength increasing rapidly. I've also added about 100 yards to my drive since last year, which is a substantial amount am now at 300-340 carry (i'm a big guy with alot of flex and arm/backmuscles, so yeah i do actually drive really far) My problem has always been my short game and my iron control, since hitting the divots it has just added a beautiful perfection to my game, and im proud to say that im now working on my sand strokes and putting to really perfect my game. So thanks a million Clay, you have truely been a fantastic coach for me without us ever having met =D
I've always struggled with my follow through balance. Took this lesson out to the garage for about 50 swings and instead of thinking about where my hips and my belt buckle is I was solely focused on my right shoulder. Bam! Perfect balance after about 20 shots. I'm gonna groove this for a month and report back. Thanks Clay, subbed and liked.
Hi Nunyo, thanks for the comment and kind words. I'm sure Clay will appreciate that. Glad you liked the video. Keep up the hard work! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Oh crap, did I say a month? My bad. lol I still use the right shoulder thought in my warm up and game and I have been getting plenty of 'nice swings' out there since drilling this. I've always had pretty good contact, esp with the irons, so for me it's not really a game improvement thought more so I just look like I know what I'm doing now instead of falling all over the course! :)
This really is a superb tip, and is exactly what I've been struggling with: hitting a great drive then knobbing it up with an abysmal 2nd / approach shot (duff, thin, shank, hook etc etc can strike at any time) . I've tried it this morning (minus the spray) and have been hitting the best irons I've hit for ages. Lovely crisp compression sound, good looking divot and pretty much bang on my yardages. Let's hope I can translate it into lower scores! Thanks Clay :)
New subscriber here. You have an excellent series of videos. I play to a 5 handicap but used to hit 2-3 "fat"irons per round which usually lead to a tough par scramble or more often a bogey. After watching this video and practicing the technique I've reduced those fat shots by at least 50%. You're video on pitching has also helped me around the greens. That is still the weakest part of my game but still working on it. Well done sir!
This is such a simple and doable drill for the average golfer. It was so easy, and not troublesome at all, for me to go to my local course and start spraying white lines on the ground and aerosol in the air, and to just spend the afternoon taking divots all over the fairway while people wait to tee off behind me. However, I should mention that this issue was resolved when I found a driving range 300 miles away that doesn't use mats, and for only $38 a bucket it was a real steal. All in all, a really useful and practical drill for the average bloke. Keep it up.
Hi Ben, thanks for the comment. I'm sensing the sarcasm here but it's actually a pretty easy drill to do. I wouldn't recommend doing it in the middle of the fairway at a local course. Sorry to hear that you don't have a range near you that has real grass. If you only can practice off of mats then it makes it difficult to practice on your ground contact. Best of luck with your golf game! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Not being able to execute this is why I quit the game. I hit off the tee consistently 275-290 with an occasional 300-310. I also putt pretty darn well. I got so tired of hitting an awesome long down the middle tee shot and following it up with a behind the ball chunk of 20 yards, or worse, slicing it 70 yards to the right into the woods or water.
I’m in the same boat as you. I played today and only missed 2 fairways off the tee. My 2nd shot into the green is always inconsistent. The reason I never quit the game is simple: We are as good as we are. Golf is the only game where everyone thinks they can become a scratch golfer, and some of us aren’t talented enough. Do we try strive to be a great 3 point shooter in basketball? Do we strive to hit a 95 mph fastball in baseball? Or throw a lightning pass 60 yards in football? No, we all hit a ceiling in those sports. Golf is no different. I think the problem is so many people lie about their score that we feel we have to get better and better. I shoot between 95-105 when I play (I count every penalty stroke) and I’m cool with that. I won’t ever be a scratch golfer, just like I can’t hit a 95 mph fastball.
@@chrisolivo6591 so agree. It would be like someone quitting tennis because they can’t play like Rafa Nadal. With golf, what you put in is what you’ll get out of it.
I hope you’ll reconsider quitting Mark. You obviously know what you need to work on. If you quit playing what would you do to fill that time? Probably nothing nearly as healthy as a good ol’ golf game of golf with some friends. For me, golf is about being in the now for 18 holes. I need that time to reboot for the next workweek. Good luck!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU .......... YOUR TEACHING IS OUTSTANDING ....YOU'VE HELPED MY SWING SO MUCH , SO NOW IT'S UP TO ME TO GET BETTER SCORES ..... THANK YOU AGAIN
Great tip, we were always taught slide hand down right leg, good tilt, but that has lead me to flat shots or reverse that then take a 2” deep divot thus why my fingers hurt. Oh yes, Clay, you got a good tip on turning vs sliding? Right now the only way I have gotten my solid contact back has been I narrowed my stance to about 12”, no more weak right ball flight, straight and longer!
Playing for 9 years now and never could make a divot, got to 8hc without one divot in front of the ball. I believe 9 years of practicing on golf mats at the range messed me up for life. I always wanted to make one great divot making shot. I will try this at a grass range. Thanks
I absolutely love this drill. It has helped me a great deal in getting my weight shifted to my left side. Thank you for making an instructional video that produces good results.
Your stuff is good, Clay. Simple and it works. Takes a while to re groove a swing. Maybe do the drill 3000 times. 50 a day for 60 days.. With non golf days, that gets me to late June. thanks
this has fixed my game for me and Ive never hit my clubs as good. this has given me a extra 25 yards on my irons. ive gone from hitting my P 110 to just under 140 now with this and its so much straighter also. This has also helped me fully finish my swing 👍👍👍👍
Thank you for this drill. This will help my game as well as help visualize ball strikes for my little girl. You present the key points very well and concise.
Technically, we have to... Because if they don't use it, we don't have a job. But I will say this - it's 100x times harder to watch it happen on a baseball field. 😖
I just got into a wild iron funk after "fixing" my driver swing. Stepping through the ball helped fix that. I was coming up on all my irons with my weight on my front foot, but I found my shoulders were tilted slighly upwards just like I was trying to kill a drive, keeping forward and actually stepping forward instantly fixed that.
3 wood - SW, in the fairway, downhill or uphill I have been doing it this way since the 80s. I learned it really early, the instructor said "this is going to seem wrong but you need to hit down on the ball at your point of contact and stay down through the swing" it just took.
Where are you trying to hit the ball at. just under it, or are you looking at the middle of the ball? Where is your focus point on the ball. Good video.
This is the exact mentality that leads to being “ball bound” Bobby Clampetts IMPACT ZONE is a excellent series for exactly what this video is demonstrating. Have a vague awareness of the ball but don’t fixate on it. I had to focus on an area ahead of the ball to move my swing bottom forwards. If you look at the ball your training yourself to put the swing bottom at the ball. That is never good. If anyone ever tells you to keep your eye on the ball tell them they’re an idiot!
I learned this drill from my father 45 years ago! I teaches you how to hit down on the ball. Another drill is take a 7* angle down on the ball. You must hit down on the ball to make it go up! God bless you dad!

Um, you can do most of it in the back yard...
hammockmonk oh yea... because everyone has a backyard...
Good luck!!
@@chrisolivo6591 “I won’t ever be a scratch golfer” not with that attitude.
@@channelfargone thanks Yoda! “Do, or do not. There is no try!”
THANK YOU THANK YOU .......... YOUR TEACHING IS OUTSTANDING ....YOU'VE HELPED MY SWING SO MUCH , SO NOW IT'S UP TO ME TO GET BETTER SCORES ..... THANK YOU AGAIN
My pleasure!
Thanks Clay. Let's see if this erodes 10 shots from my score on a full round.
My pleasure Roberto! Hope it helps.
Thanks!
Today i learned how to clean my irons without filthying a glove.
also great tutorial!
Nice!
Hi Clay been using this drill with a small tee on the tee matt to get tha same feeling.Best drill I have seen.Thanks.
Thanks Roger!
Coach, is it legal to use this drill when playing on the link? Thanks for the drill!
I'd only use foot spray powder during my practice sessions, not during a round. Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
Clay is a great teacher. However, I'm thinking of going to the Single Plane Swing to be more consistent and less back pain
Thanks! Both single and two-plane swings with the TSG System on the site. Sorry to hear about your back pain. Wishing you the best.
Excellent tip.My fairway shots have improved, this has even improved my fairway woods too.And the step through I’m even starting to draw the ball some
Playing for 9 years now and never could make a divot, got to 8hc without one divot in front of the ball.
Thanks Jordan Speith. These step drill is one of my things that got me going last year
Without any doubt at all -you are THE best instructor on here. PLease keep them coming!
Thanks you so much!
2.20 mins in and youve already described exactly what ive been doing wrong!!
Clay, this was exactly what I needed. Easy drill with simple feedback. Thanks for the lesson!
Great tip with visual reinforcement. I also enjoyed the tip about using the spray on the clubface to see where I am making contact.
Thanks William!
this was a great video for me I just started with the swing and already I fell so comfortable it has helped so much thank you
EER
Your stuff is good, Clay. Simple and it works. Takes a while to re groove a swing. Maybe do the drill 3000 times. 50 a day for 60 days.. With non golf days, that gets me to late June. thanks
You're welcome!
Have been practicing a ton with foot spray recently. I love the feedback! Awesome video!
Hi Rob, thanks for sharing. Keep up the hard work! ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
Rob Scherer
Its a great idea
Thanks Yoohoo Nobody!
Golf is simple...said no one ever. Good video.
Thanks!
Quality instruction 👍🏼👍🏼 going to try this at the range this weekend!! 👍🏼👍🏼🏌🏻⛳️
YOu mean the range where they make you pay to hit balls from 90% dirt and 10% grass?
this has fixed my game for me and Ive never hit my clubs as good. this has given me a extra 25 yards on my irons.
ive gone from hitting my P 110 to just under 140 now with this and its so much straighter also. This has also helped me fully finish my swing 👍👍👍👍
Great tips. Improved my iron play dramatically. Shaved 8 strokes off my game. Thanks Clay.
Thank you for this drill. This will help my game as well as help visualize ball strikes for my little girl. You present the key points very well and concise.
Thanks!
Thank you so much! Do you use this on your driver swing as well?
Sure, if you're hitting your driver off of the turf instead of on a tee. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Can’t wait to out this to work! I very much want to enjoy days roaming vast areas of beautifully manicured grass without golf ruining it for me 😜
Good luck!
The grounds keeper must love this.
😂😂
Technically, we have to... Because if they don't use it, we don't have a job.
But I will say this - it's 100x times harder to watch it happen on a baseball field. 😖
Job security
I can't wait to try this out on the driving range. Thanks Clay!
Any time!
Grounds keeper: HEY Jack!!! 👹😂
Love this guy! Makes everything simple to understand and very effective.
Thanks Chris!
Excellent! Clearly explained. Thankyou. Cheers from New Zealand
Thanks Tonymorony!
Thanks for sharing!
Great video! Found it very helpful.
Good video.
Thanks Danny. I don't really see the ball. I see the target in my minds eye when I am swinging.
I agree. I was always hitting behind the ball, so I decided to focus on a couple of inches in front of the ball and it works for me.
Awesome video! Legit changed my game overnight!
Glad to hear it!
Lets go ahead and go back.... love this line🤣
Haha! 😂 Play well!
Correction, stop looking
Great teaching Clay...the number one issue I want to address in my game.. Only noticed your golf jacket at the end of the lesson......GO CARDS!
Hi Allen, glad the video helped. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
I'm the king of chunking the ball here in Ireland and it ruins my day, thanks for this video
Happy to help
I learned this drill from my father 45 years ago! I teaches you how to hit down on the ball. Another drill is take a 7* angle down on the ball. You must hit down on the ball to make it go up! God bless you dad!
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!
This drill is older than Clay, but still a good one! Scratch that..... older than Clay's dad
Hi Larry, we definitely didn't make it up. Hope you're playing great! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Excellent. The great Garry Player taught this method many years ago.
Thanks for sharing!
This is one of the best videos I have watched. Good images and simple instruction. Thanks for a great lesson.
Thanks William!
Basic drill that has been used for years but still a good one. Didn't know about the foot spray! Thanks
Thanks Colin!
Fantastic tip. Thank you Clay. Now I’m crushing my irons.
Thanks Bill!
Im new to golf and have been watching your videos, never knew you were a kentucky boy also. Gonna have to get me a membership now lol
Welcome aboard! Thanks for joining!!
