    Yes the eerie part of these electrical vault fires is when the "arcing" causes building lights to flicker, about 25 years ago I seen one where the lights of a entire square block of 10+ story buildings start to flicker.

    John, I used to work at ConEd in Da Bronx. Manhole fires are caused by a combination of conditions. Road salt applied to roads in the winter never washes out of manholes or vaults. Then add months of corrosive action combined with heat & electrical load. The cables are closely bound together & everything is electrically connected in a network. As soon as one set of cables fail? Others near by fail.
    The splicers in the red wagons are their troubleshooters (#9). They handle all faults in the underground system. Most often they will fill the structure with water to smother the fire & cool the cables.
    That guy with the clean hardhat & new traffic vest on the phone is a stupidvisor. He only directs crews of where to work? Most everyone already knows that though but they need to feel important. Feeders are only turned off at substations. However everything is tied together in a network. So, another feeder will pick up more load.

    So I’m a bit confused. I don’t live in a big city so I don’t get it. What causes a manhole to catch fire, much less multiple manholes? And they are exploding and popping! What is going on?

    • @John-ru5ud
      @John-ru5ud 4 роки тому +6

      In the winter, it is usually road salt contamination. In the summer, it is likely an overload of one or more of the distribution cables due to air conditioning usage. Main purpose of FDNY is to stand by until power company can cut off the service.

    • @Bud3236
      @Bud3236 4 роки тому +3

      There are power cables down there that run for miles to feed buildings

    • @cindyedge9127
      @cindyedge9127 4 роки тому +1

      Thank you for asking that question! I was wondering the same thing. So, all the power lines are underground then?

    • @travismeier7434
      @travismeier7434 4 роки тому +2

      Electric and telecommunications equipment can catch fire. Natural gas leaks that gather in the confined space. Natural flammable gases from sewage such as methane. Illegal dumping of flammable materials. And these are all connected, so having multiple locations have fire or explosion is basically like having your house catch fire, and it spreading to each different room.

    • @cindyedge9127
      @cindyedge9127 4 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for the awesome explanation!

  • @WitchidWitchid
    @WitchidWitchid 4 роки тому

    Yeah... Those underground primary cables can be problematic, specially on hot days. Lot of times the cables are damaged in winter from the road salt then they crap out in the summer under rhe heat and high loads.

      YEAH, YOUR WELCOME AND THANKS SO MUCH.....

    • @WitchidWitchid
      @WitchidWitchid 4 роки тому

      Yeah... Its a combination of heat buildup due to the hot weather and primarily due to the cable getting very hot under the high electrical load from rhe heavy air xonditioner use. Very often the cables rhat blow out have been damaged previously, often from road salt water corrosion from all rhw road salt suring the winter.

      In Manhattan the electric cables are housed below ground in transformer vaults (not on poles like the other boroughs). In hot weather they are liable to overload due to high demand for air conditioning etc, and in the winter salt from snow clearance gets washed into them and corrodes the wiring which then reacts with water. Plus a lot of the infrastructure is very old!

    • @THEMAJESTIRIUM1
      @THEMAJESTIRIUM1  4 роки тому +1

      THE EXTREME HEAT IN THE SUMMER AND THE SALTY WATER RUNOFF IN THE WINTER CAUSE REACTIONS WITH THE WIRING IN THE MANHOLES AND CAUSE THEM TO ERUPT IN SMOKE AND MANY TIMES FLAMES WITH VERY DANGEROUS CO READINGS AS WELL.....

    • @travismeier7434
      @travismeier7434 4 роки тому +2

      Esme Esme all smoke is toxic and carcinogenic. Even smoke from your bbq. This is a problem for firefighters around the world, because even though they may be exposed to less toxic smoke, and in small amounts at a time, they’re exposed many times throughout their careers. Plus add in the contamination of their equipment. Recently there’s better decontamination routines, and firefighter are being issued multiple sets of gear so they can go out in clean gear, while the stuff from a previous call is being decontaminated, but it will only slow down the health effect, not eliminate them.

    When you're outdoors, and distanced from other people, there is no need to wear masks.
    Yet, I see most New Yorkers wearing them. I have to wonder if people, no matter where they live, realize that after four hours, a mask has to be sanitized, or disposed of.
