Join me as I dive into the art of shredding the blues with a live solo over the classic "C Jam Blues." Starting with a traditional blues style and a smooth tone on my Epiphone Silverburst Les Paul, I play a full chorus of tasteful licks. Then, watch as the energy kicks in and I shift to double time, effortlessly outlining the chord changes and hitting all the right notes with long, flowing lines.
In this video, I break down my approach to soloing, sharing insights on how I developed my technique. I'll discuss practicing eighth notes over chord changes to build facility and make your playing seamless. These concepts are rooted in my time at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, and I’m excited to share them with you!
Whether you're a seasoned guitarist or just starting out, this video is packed with tips and tricks to enhance your blues playing. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more guitar lessons and demos!

GREAT ADVICE Brad. I'm 60yrs old & play 3hr gigs straight through. The style I play is fusion/flamenco, blues, funk, Latin jazz/fusion, & Rock, mostly originals, but the covers I play I'll do the vocal melody on the guitar (because I'm an instrumentalist). So I do shred, but I pace myself with more melodic playing (shredding too much doesn't work for dinner music, LOL). Plus, I try to incorporate dynamics in my phrasing & it all works, gig a lot of gigs because of it. I've been playing now for almost 50yrs. ( I can't believe it, LOL) & one thing I've learned is that there's something for everyone out there. Keep On Inspiring Brother, Rock On & God Bless.
Man you rock! Thanks so much. Great advice from you as well. We got the best people on this channel. Thanks for your contribution.
A very well known musician once said in an interview in guitar for the practicing musician.
Want to learn to play lead. Play the vocals on guitar.
I couldn't understand the fretboard or play lead.
3 years on bass in an originals band, the while at home. Doing just what niel schonn said in that interview I was finally able to play lead guitar and my ear got so much better I understood music theory finally.
The rest is history... My history and it not what I wanted it to he but good enough.
Hey that sounds good!
One good thing about wearing Bluetooth hearing aids, listening to the Brad channel at work and nobody knows. Anyone here suffering from hearing loss and tinnitus? I swear it’s from all those years of loud drummers
Yeah working in the rhythm section next to those drummers def. didn't help.
I do but.
Oddly I can still run sound and. Make a band sound perfect..
But what I notice is the ears. What they hear changes a little about 3 songs in they get better. The ears and the band and the sound.
Ears can get fatigued as well seems to happen quicker with digital audio....
Man, that intro solo was extremely tasty and your timing is deep. This is how I play (envisioned in my mind, but actually nowhere close). Keep killing it, man!
Very much appreciate!! 🎸
I’m practicing
That's what it's all about.
👏👏💯💯🎸🎸
Thank you!!!🙏
@@badbradhope you're finding work!
@@user-ko4iy1pp9j Should be ok...
Man, that is some tasty playing. Love your style. Love the videos!
Thank you so much! Very much appreciated!
Nice jazzy bluesy chops! B.B. King..turns jazzy boy...turns shredder! Sweet.
Thank you!!!
In the house from Surprise Arizona.
AWESOME. I bet it's warm out there.
@@badbrad Its a dry heat LOL.
Ha Ha yes it is.....lol
Data some Pretty jazzy blues.
Thank you! 🙏
I’m glad to see that you can still “bring it”. When I “bring it”, it might arrive at the end of the song. I m not good enough to shred. But, I hear you about being competitive when playing. I just can’t compete. My best bet is to set my guitar on fire or swing it at the bass player. Lol😂
That's hilarious...I'm sure you can turn up the heat when needed.
Good video I can relate on the age I’m 64 I gotta wonder where the stones ,Neil y , Dylan ,Willie N get that energy must be that live crowd !
The crowd def spurs you on.
Nice suhr too
Thank you! Love that guitar.
The key to success is thinking extremely fast.
Yes!
Very cool lines. Seriously
Thank you much appreciated!
Brad if you would change to Ryze or Bubs mushroom ☕
It would give you ALL day energy and great mind focas and idea.
Ive been on it 90 days and its incredible. Lions Mane, Turkey Tail with NO harmful nothing.
All organic. Please try it, both you and the wife will definitely love it.
I may just look into that....
Love it Brad! Need a Zoom lesson when you are up and running
Email me at bradjams@comcast.net
Lol. Love the look on the drummers face! Priceless!
He he....Yeah he's a good dude.
@@badbrad Great tone! I love the improvised feel/shredding in that context!
Thanks so much. I have alot of fun playing that style of blues.
Great lesson Brad by the way 16th notes I say
Yes!!!
Ah man, so hard to focus on my at home practice for gigs with your videos to watch (kidding).
Lmao
I’m a frontman basically a karaoke addict with an upside down cross on my face face painted
Nothing wrong with being a frontman. We need em!
Blues is tricky, it can be simple but mixing major and minor sounds can get baffling. So many possibilities.
It is tricky and so many different levels to what you can do with it.
Love this Brad but itis all over my head. I am just a picker and sometimes a grinner. Catch you later.
No problemo! 🙏
When I think it I mess up when I feel it it comes out smooth. I can barely read music and tab isn't much help.
I learn by ear and feel.
But when I hit a tough spot I'll check a tab cause I know I'm close it just doesn't sound right.
Yeah play what sounds and feels good is a good thing.
Great tips. Was Scott Henderson an instructor when you were at GIT? I think mentioned something similar to this concept in one of his instructional videos.
Yes he was. Basically he just sat in a room and played Real book tunes with the atudents
I need to refresh them, but I typically at least have all the 7 scale positions memorized. What I don't know is what modes to use over certain chords, etc...I've always been convicted of my lack of jazz skills especially since I went through grade school as a serious jazz sax player
Sounds like you got the info in your head...try and transfer your sax ideas onto guitar.
Drummer who subscribed to move you up in the chain. May I gently point you to Super Bad Brad the King of the Corner. Thanks
I will have to check him out is he on UA-cam? Thank you!
Diggin' your improv chops bro; that was killer. The dorian over the four chord and the altered dominant lines were cookin'. Your double time feel is awesome, very inspiring! Love your guitar tone on the gig. What amp and pedal were you using? 😎👏👍
That’s a Quilter Aviator Mach 3 and a J Rockett the Dude.
@@badbrad nice thanks for the info.
@@warrenguitar no problem....
Good direction bad bull rules....
Thank you!
Did a gig in stillwater okla. In a dive. Was standing directly in front of the drummer. On of the loudest pounding fools I ever worked with. They called me a month later to do the gig again, I said HELL NO.
Ha ha!! Omg.
Huge part of why I have tinnitus and hearing loss.
Loud ass drummers. Hahahaha
100 watt tube amps. Didn't help.
Yeah those pesky tube amps and drummers will get ya.
@@badbrad I now use a mk 2 katana 50 watt? Suits me very well. 🤪🤪🤪🤪
@@badbrad played thru a fender evil twin for years. Way too heavy for me these days.
Your daughter is precious! And your first solo was very tasty. However, I’m not sure the shredding was quite appropriate for that tune, which was basically a swing shuffle. It’s cool to show off the chops a bit…I get it. But sometimes you gotta play the tune if you know what I mean. Restraint isn’t always easy. That said, you show a great range of creativity.
To each his own right? I could have played two choruses like I played the first but that would have been kind of boring...
Disagree with you, TJSMITH... over the course of an hour dinner set, it's appropriate at times to throw something in that might quietly raise a few sets of eyebrows that say hey that guy's pretty effing good.. to take notice of what's happening up there, even during a cocktail / dinner set. It's not like he's breakinto into eruption or metal solo
@@badbrad Indeed..
@@TomDavisVideo Thanks Tom, yeah it is a swing blues and I'm just taking it to the Jazz level....We were getting alot of raised eyebrows that night for that very thing and people were really digging it. It's Nashville so people expect you to play...
Your video is very beautiful. I like it a lot. I have been trying to talk to you for a long time. I am waiting for your response. Please give me a chance to talk to you.❣
How can I help you?
