In this video, I take you back to the late eighties, a time when I was a wide-eyed kid from a small town with dreams of mastering modern guitar techniques. Hollywood Boulevard became my daily path as I attended the Guitar Institute of Technology (G.I.T.), a prestigious place for aspiring guitarists. But beyond the glitz and glamour, Hollywood Boulevard held a darker side that I'll never forget.
Join me as I share the sights and horrors I encountered every day on those streets-the stark contrast between the dreams that brought me there and the harsh realities I faced. From the eccentric characters to the unsettling encounters, this is my personal tale of navigating the boulevard, and how those experiences shaped my journey as a musician.
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more stories from my life in music and beyond!

I wish i had found you earlier! Ive watched 3 or 4 of your videos now, and the things you say really resonate with me. You are such a warm and affable dude. Im 58, and not a "real" musician, i play guitar in a 3(sometimes 4) piece basement band. Just good buddies making some drunken noise om Saturday night. But the joy it brings is immeasurable. I almost quit the other day, because it has stagnated,no progress being made, but realized how therapeutic it is for me. Im a mediocre guitar player, but i have learned much, and have written a couple of things now, and hearing you in this video has helped rekindle my fire. I hope your new chapter in Fla. is all you would like it to be. Now im going to listen to you play! Thanks.

Some times I think, some bands like that image just "sex, drugs and rock n roll". Happy go lucky bums. Yes Im sure there have been times that they've been that also but if you're succesful, you have to be able to produce. Albums, tours. Yes maybe works for short time. But its a lot of work. Its not possible really too long. I think it gives sometimes wrong idea. Morrison, Stones, Aerosmith, GNR, Motley. Im sure they they worked their ass off. But the image sells that being fucked up you're gonna be rock star also.

All I have is the horrors of Nashville from the ‘70s till now. One of my favorites from the 80’s is former Mayor Bill Boner playing harmonica on the Phil Donahu show. It’s a must see. A creepy one is having meet the Nashville Christmas Day bomber multiple times throughout my life. The first time around ‘83 was at this music store in Nashville called Music Man before and after it moved. His security company did the alarm systems there and later for TN Stage & Sound. I used to run into him there a lot there because TSS was beside Tebeaux’s Tavern. I also ran into him at a bar once and had a long drunk conversation with him. It’s really creepy looking back at it. I should have told you about the 3 Charlie Manson look alikes I had as guitar store customers. A story for another time. 🍺😂

Like Brad said, 2 lane freeways were the norm, and then dealing with 8-10 lanes of traffic madness in LA! And also..... every phone call beyond 11 miles was into a different area code, and considered long distance! They and it has rules. It was tradition and was a contest once mastered. In this particular click. I remember doing a duo gig I had with one of them. He had me on the gig because it was more fun to drink with someone. 😆 so it became a competition every week. 24 glasses and an extra 4 pitchers a piece was our record on that weekly gig. That was a proper place to do it at. We never did stuff like that on important stuff. I definitely caught the Col. Kurtz apocalypse now tone in your voice!! Point taken!! As a Vietnam Marine combat vet(69’) I personally know about the Horrors you speak of..and then some. This video brought it all back Brad!! Seeing the seedy side of the city..the people of the street..of the night..and on foot..your only way was put one foot in front of the other and not look back!! Semper Fi

I had the same experience going from small town in NC in 1976 --- and not knowing anything----- to LA. I remember seeing attractive people, much older than me, waiting on tables. WTF? I later learned they they were all trying to make it in show biz. LOL And then I was forced to get horrible jobs! LOL I left. Live and learn.

They call it Alpha House in my city and was formerly referred to as the DOAP squad. Upon encountering a desperate soul lapsing into a “f......l” overdose one can given them a call. I have the number on speed dial since I walk to work. 911 will work in your community. It only take a moment to check for respiration. Call if your intuition deems it prudent.

Back in the day they didn’t have narcan or whatever it is. They would just slap your face or throw you in the tub with cold water.

I still have some of those old Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazines that inspired to want to become a better guitar player. I came close to buying a camper and rolling out to LA and going to GIT about the same time you went, but I saw enough crap and heard enough stories in the music scene in my small town/state, that I chose not to go after a music career or touring musician. Good thing for many reasons as I came down with serious illness and it would have been for nothing since I wasn't able to play for many years. I can now, though :)
